Making A "Hand Built Trail" With A Mini Excavator

  • Yes, that is indeed an oxymoron, but let me explain. Just because something is built with an excavator doesn't mean it needs to be an abomination of a flow trail. The goal is to mimic the feel of hand built trails, but using the mechanical advantage of a machine to save time and energy. This is also a learning process for me to experiment with different building methods to see what works and what doesn't on my own property. I'm trying to work with the terrain, and make small alterations to improve sections of trail that needed help.

    If you're confused about the title, I elaborated in the description. But it's worth repeating. Many machine built trails feel like they were machine built, but they don't always have to feel that way. I wanted to use this as a learning opportunity to build lighter, and tighter while also fixing the parts of the trail that have been a weak point. My goal is that in a year or two, (hypothetically speaking) if somebody rode this trail they would think this trail was built by hand.

      Yup I’m the same. I have a mini excavator (super tiny) that fits through tight gaps. My backyard trail still feels very hand built, because most of the work shaping the features is done by hand. It would be cool if you checked out my channel Phil, could be some inspiration for your trails, the same way yours has inspired mine. Keep up the good work legend.

      I mean to reply to your comment last time, but I ended up clicking on your channel watching a few videos and then getting distracted LOL. You've got some solid stuff up there man! I was originally looking at the same size mini excavator as you before, but I'm glad I was talked into going a little bigger. That being said those super mini sized ones still look super handy to have around and are even more maneuverable.

      @@davidbiddle5039 It's a super useful trick! I find that the combination of the rooty organic material and leaves help renaturalize the terrain quicker. The leaves help prevent the soil from running off after rainstorms, and the rooty material helps plants sprout up again and form root structures that help retain the bench cut.

    A gap jump over the water feature is whats really needed, and if it's a long sloppy area, a jump onto a timber table top with a jump/drop off

    Not an operator but if you parked the machine behind the berm and dug out the inside of the turn so the line you'll take on the berm is below the grounds surface they come out amazing and hardly ever need work. Thats how I hand build them. Love the videos.

    • @PhilsWorld

      Repositioning the excavator without tracking over and damaging the stuff you already shaped is part of the trickiness about machine building. Not to mention, ideally want to try and minimize how much you track over virgin soil. These things are heavy and leave quite a mark. The other thing to consider is the more you alter the terrain, the more you affect how water travels. Erosion and drainage is a huge factor in all my builds.

    • @Thematty635
      @Thematty635 2 роки тому +2

      I think if your making berms that are half underground, while it's fast and easy and rides well, they don't ever drain well. So really depends on your location and how the soil takes water, or how much infrastructure you want to dig in like drainage pipes and the like. They're fun to ride though for sure

    You need a custom excuvator blade that is curved to enable cambers and a general soft-looking cut

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I try to come back and shave the edges down to help blend them in better. That's definitely where a wrist or some kind of tilt, tiltrotator coupler would help. But as is I haven't found too many things I can find a work around for.

      I'm not sure what you mean. The trail used to be off camber and had a layer of soft organic dirt. We dug below most of that organic dirt to more compactable soil, and the trail is not longer off camber. Maybe it's not apparent but it made a huge difference.
