    About this Video:
    It's finally here... I've been waiting for Hatsan to retool the BT65 for something larger than the .25 and today we'll take a look at their .35 caliber. I've been working with them for a couple of months to dial in the necessary changes to this rifle and I believe we have a winner. With 18 useable shots and topping out at just over 95 FPE, the new .35 cal BT65 Quiet Energy is going to make a lot of airgunners really happy.

    Thank you Rick!! I haven't chronied it in a while and not past shot 12, but out of the box I can easily put three mags in a 2.5" circle at 45 yds, and many times much tighter than that. From what I can tell, not much changes out to 18 shots. I seem to have gotten a really good rifle, and I'll give up a few shots for some more power. I'll try for the 110 like you said. Thanks again!

    That is a monster of an air rifle. There's a fair bit of recoil, by the look of it!
    It must use heaps of air to put out circa 100 fpe. How many fills do you get from a standard scuba tank, and what pressure does it take in the air cylinder?

    Hatsans magazines are the best I've seen on a pellet rifle. For 1. its metal 2. may survive cracking, or breaking if dropped, 3 . inexpensive, 4. they appear to be strong. 5. hardly any moving parts from what I see.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Rick!
    It has snowed up here. And the javelin have raided the cold frame again! The Hatsan 125 spring noise gives too much warning.
    This Hatsan BT65 sounds like it might cure the problem.

      As far as SOUND GOES I have both the 125 and BT65 QE both in .25 (my experience is the bigger the pellet the more stable it is. (I also have three .22's in a name brand guns Springers and a Nitro))
      Ricks test seem right on, only comparing the BT65 (I haven't cronied the 125 I know it's tough on a scope)
      SOUND, lets say this,I like lots of wild life in the back yard so my shooting consist of targets, EXCEPT FOR CROWS, too loud and run off my song birds.
      I HAVE SHOT @ 50 YARDS TWO DIFFERENT CROWS IN THE SAME TREE within 5 seconds, IT'S THAT QUIET. I have shot 2 crows @ 86 yards on the ground 8 feet apart again so quiet I didn't spook the 2ed crow.
      PLUS, recoiless, you can quickly adjust the scope because of seeing from pull to impact. ( I have actually shot a few yards away from pray when shooting over the lagoon to see my hold over, and two things, staying with a pellet instead of a bullet (I have used 43 grain bullets in this BT65, very stable but loss of energy (the 31 grain H & N's gave me 61 lbs energy) Bullets carry, ricochet, pellets don't, they fall off if they touch your target in any way, one of the huge safety advantages of pellets.
      I have been hunting for a bigger gun for hog hunting and "dreamed" only if I had the BT65 in a bigger caliber, Well, for an old gun, dreams never come true, until today. If only it was in a Bullpup, but I'm being too wishful .
      Changing from 125 (springer to pcp and then to hatsan BT 65) if you notice the youtube video's a 100+ shot isn't uncommon, but what most of these guys aren't telling you, is they are not experts or spent a lot of time practicing. the first day with the BT 65 and the hawk sidewinder, 100 yard shots were 1 " after less than 100 shots.
      IT'S THE GUN, NOT ME. THE GUN IS JUST THAT ACCURATE, it's heaven sent to the novice. head shots on small game @ 100 yards can be done with confidence. I had a previous BT65 had to send it back, the second wasn't as accurate. The first was a never miss gun, this new one gets groups over 1" @ 100 yards, the other "never ever" had a flyer.

    Sometimes it's not about the energy it's about the penetration levels of the projector you kill a critter with was force or penetration or both but shot placement everything when hunting so I say actress is the most important thing

    Looks like a lot of fun. When is Hatsan going to put good swivel studs on their guns? Would be nice to see them drop the ones they have and go to a standard stud so we could use good swivels.
    Oh javelina will come into those calls you got give them a try if you get to go.

    Mario - if you follow the rule of 1 foot pound of energy to 1 pound of game, so long you keep your game to 85 to 95 pounds or less, I would imagine that you'd do well out to 35 to 50 yards. Beyond that and you'll have dropped too much energy and may not deliver a one shot kill.

      Airgun Expert & Critic - Rick Eutsler / AirgunWeb Hey! I didn't realize there was even a formula for FPS and how much energy it takes to effectively kill a animal of x amount of size. Thanks for that info! Seems simple enough and that certainly makes sense! Loved this video btw. I've been a fan of your reviews for quite sometime, and I am gona get a Hatsan break barrel due to your great video reviews.. seems for the money that Hatsan delivers all the goods at a reasonable price... sure its not the Ferrari of air rifles, but it has most of what the Ferrari has for a LOT less cash... Impressive!!

  • @Jtwizzle
    @Jtwizzle 9 років тому

    Sweet rifle! One thing I do wish, though, is for more .35/.357 air rifles to be around the 110~ ft lb range. Extra oomph, and less rainbow trajectory. The gap between .30 and .357 energy outputs is generally not that large, either. I realize they are trying to balance shot count and power and sometimes being limited by the platforms themselves.

    • @AirGunWeb
      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому

      Sometimes its just the physical limitations of the platform. The BT65 really tops out at the .35. I believe it would take some work to get to that 120 FPE range. As it sits, it may not produce the same top end power as other .357 big bore rifles, but it has great, repeatable accuracy and really decent shot count. In my book, that's more important than hitting the 100 or 110 fpe mark. But that's just me. If you've just got to have the 110+ FPE, this may not be the right product for you.
      Cheers

    • @Jtwizzle
      @Jtwizzle 9 років тому

      Thanks for the response, Rick! Probably right about that, and not necessarily talking just about the bt65. It seems a great deal of .357's are around that 100 ft lb mark?(im guessing to keep at least a decent shot count, is the main reasoning). Just a bit more energy to widen the gap from the .30's and to flatten that trajectory out a tad. I reckon tuning one for more power, as long as it retains accuracy is not out of the question either.(Which Id imagine it would, since diablo style pellets generally stay accurate to 900~fps). The .30 BT65 peaks my interest with it's pretty strong power and flatter shooting. What stops me from picking one up is the weight, 9.3 lbs is quite the package.

    • @AirGunWeb
      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому

      joshua12345676 An added benefit of the .35 is for those states that allow hunting with airguns and have set the minimum caliber at .35. Arizona is a good example. I'm very curious to see how the .35 and .30 sales progress. These are really good guns that are accurate, quite, and should be very affordable as compared to other big bore airguns. But, yes they are heavy.

    Hatsan never should have released this .35 caliber until they increased the power. They are advertised at 730fps.. and if that wasn't bad enough... that was the maximum you could expect from a .35. Mine only shot a high of 702fps...I had to disassemble & enlarge holes , change springs and make a new transfer port to get the FPS over 800 before I could take a shot at a Coyote or a larger animal. Finally, after spending so many days & trying so many different methods , it's shooting very accurately @ mid-high 800's. I could take this gun & go deer hunting with my Daughter if I decided to.

    Rick, what are your thought about the up coming Benjamin Bulldog .357 cal and the Hatsan .357 cal? The Bulldog claimed to get "stunning 200 foot pounds of energy (FPE) when using the Benjamin eXTREME™ airgun 145 grain hunting bullet by Nosler®. Shooters can expect up to 10 usable shots on a single charge" while the Hatsan only get 90 FPE. Could the Hatsan go up any higher than the 90FPE?

    • @AirGunWeb
      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому

      I guess we'll see how marketing meets real world. It's all theory until I actually have one in my hands to test. As for the BT65 at 90, it's actually putting out a little over 100 on the production models. The extreme spread is about 30 fps across the first 15 shots. (Crosman said they were getting about 60 fps spread over the first 5 and then it started to drop more rapidly to 10 shots) I'd rather have 15 really consistent shots at 90 to 100 FPE, then 2 at 180 or 200 and then have to chase or guess the POI for the rest of the string. For me and what I'd be hunting with the .35, 90 to 100 FPE is more than adequate. If I wanted more power for bigger game, I'd simply step up to something . 45. But that's me. I know that 2 or 3 "good" shots at 150 to 180 may be just what some folks are looking for. We'll see if she delivers!

      Shot string in what regard? Are you asking for a chrony tape? The JSB pellets are the best I've found so far in this gun. I'm purposefully staying away from FPS because it's not a good measure as to an airgun's true performance. However, if you want to have some idea of how the JSB Pellets are doing: High - 728.7, Low - 687.6, Average - 710.9, Extreme Spread - 41.0, Standard Deviation - 11.6. That's across 18 shots, i.e. 3 mags.

      They will probably both give you 70 yard power and accuracy for small game. The difference will come in the refinement of the gun. If you are looking for pure utility, then save your money and get the AT44, or other Hatsan Variant.. however, if you want a vastly more refined airgun, the AirArms is the way to go. As it is I'm putting 12 to 14 hours per day into the work just to try and keep up with what's currently on my plate. I'm fairly sure that I'll be able to hook up with someone after SHOT that will be willing to fund the materials, testing time, and production costs. If and when I do it, I want to be setup to begin cataloging all the various pellets and calibers across all airgun platforms and create a comprehensive library of that data.

      I've not shot the full length sniper at 50 yards yet. I hope to soon. The Max ML shoots about 2" or so at 50 yards. I'm told the sniper will do 1" or so at that distance. I like both guns for very different reasons. For a bench gun at the range, I LOVE the Evanix.. for a hunting gun in the field, I'd probably choose the Hatsan if you made me choose. Thanks for a great vid Rick! So I have been waiting for a "quiet" big bore and this might be it, I have a safe full of powder burners if I want noise. I had a 909s and it was far to loud and far to inaccurate for me but I have one main question to ask about the BT65. I have a couple Mrods and they are highly tunable, is the BT65 tunable as I enjoy tweaking and tuning my guns? I have been trying to get info on another .357 that is supposed to be coming out soon but it is hard to get info on it so I am glad you posted this.... I am not a fan of bull pups and no one will tell me if the "someday to be released" bulldog is suppressed so I doubt that I will wait around to find out so the BT65 might be my next AG.

      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому +1

      You can tweak the BT65. However, it's running pretty much maxed out with the .35 caliber. I'm not sure it's got much more in the tank in the way of power in this caliber. The .30 cal is a different story. There's some room to tinker on that one. I'm heading to SHOT in a couple of weeks. I hope to see Crosman's new .357 and maybe get to work with one next year.

    Always a fan, Rick, but can you turn off that constant ad screen behind you when talking from the bench? Its distracting so that I have to block it with a Post-It-Note.
    Also, the Hatsan is called "quiet energy", but you don't talk about its noise level. Looking for a big bore (9mm or larger) in the 80dB range.
    NY State is considering opening up big game hunting to airguns of .30 cal or larger, so I am looking very hard at the 9mm offerings.

    I love airguns but can't see myself getting a big bore for anything. My .22 PCP is used purely for small game and hasn't let me down yet, even with big raccoons. If you want to extend your range a bit then yeah I guess they're fine but to me hunting with airguns is like using a bow get as close as possible, it makes it more challenging and fun. I don't get why people ask can this take a deer?? It's producing less every than a .22lr... would you use that for deer? No.

    • @AirGunWeb
      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому

      CA Airgunner - while it may produce less FPE than a .22, it will create a much bigger wound channel and most likely pass clean through a small deer. With proper shot placement it would be effective. Is it the optimal choice? Probably not. But airguns should not be compared to firearms. They do the job differently. Having recently been out hunting with the .35 while others were shooting .22s, hunting jack rabbits, the .35 was vastly more effective. All the rifles got the job done, but the authority with which the .35 put down game, really opened my eyes up to how they can be a very good option of tough game.

    • @edgarlombera7066
      @edgarlombera7066 9 років тому

      There's that, it creates a bigger wound, bigger round bigger kill-zone definitely which for sure will be devastating on small game. I'm just stating that air rifles are exclusively for small game. Two reasons I've seen big bore shooting big game like deer and basically they don't go down easily, and that's within 60yd, but I get it, it's about shot placement and getting close to your quarry. The other is that I don't know of many places in the U.S. that allow big game hunting with airguns, private land may be different but not sure. So if shot placement and stalking is needed I'll stick to a bow, that's my opinion though.

    • @AirGunWeb
      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому

      +CA Airgunner - it's a personal preference for sure. I've seen some big game put down where they stand with airguns. It's not only doable, it's done with great success on a regular basis. Take the new Texan for instance.. up to 500 FPE and 100 accuracy. That will blow clear through just about anything (within reason) that stands in front of it. More and more states are opening hunting up to airguns, usually with a minimum caliber, i.e. .35, .40, etc. Each hunter needs to make the personal decision as to whether it makes sense to them or not.
      On the other side, I've seen some terrible "hunting" with bows and firearms that was just embarrassing and disturbing regarding the shot choices they made. I think it usually comes down to the guy or gal behind the weapon, not necessarily the weapon.

      @@Xtreme_Airgun_Slugs both the .30 (85 ft/lb) and .35 (105ft/lb) have less ME than .22LR (120-190 ft/lbs) lol. I like to go after groundhog with a .30 muzzleloader, so I'd think the .30 would be nice for closer distances, but the .35 would allow you to throw heavier projectiles, maintaining energy and velocity out at longer distances.
      Airguns suck compared to firearms, always have, and most likely always will. Still fun and challenging to hunt with, due to their severe limitations. Even the big, "powerful" .50's out now struggle to match hunting handguns, let alone rifles.

    Anyone having problems with the Auto Safety Mechanism?
    Anyone having problems with pellets not loading?
    I have a hatsan in .357 and it seems to have issues with about every 3rd or 4th shot the safety not releasing, I have to remove the magazine, cycle the bolt then take a shot. This is not something that should happen in a Hunting Rifle. I am very disappointed although I want to see if there is a fix.
    I also believe the magazine design is terrible with the O-Rings, why not make it smooth like the Sumatra with a semi tapered magazine and front loading pellets? makes for better seating. I am going to be looking into having a machine shop I have access to milling me a new magazine that will work better, I saw where one person used some plastic sleeves on the inside of the magazine and removed the o-rings and is getting better bolt cycling. any thoughts?

    • @AirGunWeb
      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому +1

      +gamohunter - contact HatsanUSA about the issues. That is what their service department is there for. As a note. The .35 cycles pretty hard. The pellets fit tightly into the breach and that's just the way it is. The side bolt is not a smooth easy action. For that look at a side lever like the Evanix Rainstorm II.

    The scope is way to high for any great accuracy, the scope objective lens needs to be just above the barrel. Looks like a sales pitch to me! ATB from England.

    • @AirGunWeb
      @AirGunWeb  9 років тому

      Hey there. Scope height only plays an issue if you are changing distances between shots. Having a scope closer to the barrel is preferable, but not necessary for accuracy. Also, you can easily optimize your scope's zero based on scope height which mitigates the change in the point of impact. Lastly, if you work with your gun and scope, it's easy to document hold over and compensate with the mil-dots.
