When I saw a revival of Peter Pan on Broadway, Tinker Bell's death scene moved a toddler to call out so loudly the show stopped momentarily and then the theatre erupted with applause.

I love to see how passionate you are about this book. It's one of my favourite children's books too ^^.
The part you mentioned where Tinker Bell takes the poison and Peter Pan asks the children of the world to believe in fairies is because Peter Pan was originally a play. It was performed in theatres before becoming a novel so some aspects of the play may have permeated into the novel.

My grandmother died earlier this year and on clearing her house one of the things I chose to keep was her 1931 edition of Peter Pan which she was given brand new as a child. I reread it again and I will always treasure it.

22:56 Taht scene makes sense only in the play. In it Peter asks kids in the audience "Do you belive in faires?", and then kids are clapping. But in the book... that's just silly.

Oh, Merphy. I can feel your emotion and you trying to keep yourself together during this beautiful review and insight into your world, thank you. I’m estranged from my father, through his choosing, and so I identify with Peter when his parents closed the windows on him. When I read Peter Pan recently, for me it was about loss... and a stolen childhood. Even though he ‘chooses’ to stay in his childhood, in a way he doesn’t choose it, he is fixed in it. And we see this because he does have emotional intelligence, and that he does have parts of him that are grown up. But we see him purposely push boundaries and hold people afar. It’s painful x

I’ve read Peter Pan twice over the past 15 years and I’m reading it for a 3rd time now. It’s always been my favorite book. The last chapter always has me in tears. It’s such a beautiful story with so much symbolism and adore the way it’s written. Absolute magic. It was a saving grace for me during a very depressing period of my teenage years. I was on medication and in therapy and related to the fears of adulthood and becoming a grownup. Peter Pan helped me dissect and process all the emotions of that time in my life in a way I’m forever grateful for. ❤ 🥹

❤WOW! Your heart felt description of why you love the story of Peter Pan was extremely moving and tearjerking. 😢 I feel your heart and feel the same way about all children whether they’re my flesh and blood or not.❤
You’ll never believe why I’m even here watching this, though. Representing myself in my own divorce trial, I was advised to have a theme for the marriage. I was married to someone named Peter and having only seen the children’s movie once 30+ years ago, I had to be reminded of what the story was about to see if the comparison would fit.
It turns out that in someways the comparison is very good and I will use it in my divorce trial as an example of what went wrong in the marriage. The ironic thing is that he is now living with a woman named Wendy! I don’t know her, but she apparently is taking care of him. How poetic. I hope they’re happy. I am happy to get back to a more responsible life! 😊

This book hits you on the mother's love part, Merphy. But this book hits me so much at that scene in Marooner's Rock when he acts "fair" to Hook, when he keeps his purehearted fair soul to the fight. Then he was heartbroken then he forgets it. It hits me that growing up means to learn from hardships and heartbreak and because Peter always forgets things even forgets tragedies, he never grow up. This hit me so much and after THAT ending when out little Peter is left out, oh no, I'm hurt. I had a book hangover with this for a whole week when Peter keeps showing up in my head. Hooh nice work Merphy, love this video so much

Best way to end the year. Merphy discussing her fave book ever. I hope there will be tears.
I agree about the 'weird' sentences. Watching the Disney movie first wasn't the best idea. I mean, whenever Peter Pan was like, "Leave Hook to me so I can kill him" and then Wendy's siblings are like "O.K.!", I was just imagining it and.... As in, you come from a light hearted joke, and then Peter says something dark, and I just laugh out loud. Even the scene where Tinkerbell tries to murder Wendy...this book goes from 1 to 360 in a split second.

Hey Merphy, that was amazing, I've never read the book, I've only ever watched the Disney cartoon and the Robin Williams film Hook, both of which were amazing, but you have given me a much deeper appreciation for Peter and the entire story, so thank you.
You mention that nobody wants to hear a deep dive on Peter's issues, but as a possible video idea for the future, I personally would love if you made deep dives on individual characters, examining their motivations, psychology, relationships etc. I'd be really interested in seeing that.

wow... Peter Pan sounds like me. I've never had a desire to read Peter Pan until now because I've only known Disney's Peter Pan. Also, I didn't realize that classic Star Trek quote is FROM Peter Pan. Granted he's a little more extreme than me in some respects like with the darker stuff but I identify with so much of what you said, a dedication to fun, taking care of people, expecting others to treat someone right, talking smack when the odds are against you... Peter Pan is officially on my must-read list. Thank you.
    And HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

My roommate got me Peter Pan sophomore year of college and I finally read it a year afterwards. I need to go back and reread it cause there was a lot I was confused on or didn’t hold my attention, but Peter Pan has always been a character and story I’ve loved. Mainly because of the Disney movie. I wanted to go to Neverland as a kid, fly around with Tinkerbell, and explore the island with Wendy and Peter. Peter and Robin Hood were always my two favorite fairy tale characters and I always love to hear renditions about their worlds.

I love Peter Pan! Tink sacrificing herself for Peter and the power of belief bringing her back is my favorite part! I got to be Tink in a stage production and that scene was very fun to act. So I am a Tink stan, but performing that scene made me think a lot about her motivations and it's deeper meaning with regards to Peter and Tink's relationship. Tink is so much like Peter in that she can be jealous and murderous one moment towards Wendy and self sacrificing the next for Peter because she knows he would do the same for her. Peter is very chivalrous, but here the female character gets to rescue him. They are the best of friends! And with Peter's mother issues you could say Tink has taken it upon herself to be his ultimate protector. All the other "Wendy's" in his life will grow up and eventually leave Peter just like his own mother did, but Tink's love for him is eternal. She is his family! Not to mention deeper questions the scene raises about the relation between belief and youth vs aging and cynicism. What must it be like for Tink to know her continued existence and that of all her people depends on the power of faith? Peter's belief in her it literally keeping her alive! It's beautiful! It was lovely to hear you talk about your favorite book! If you ever have a chance to see the ballet version of Peter Pan, I highly recommend it. It would also be great to hear you review any fantasy books that are a variation on Peter Pan like Straight on Til Morning from the Disney Twisted Tales series or Peter Pan Trilogy by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson.

My partner says that I love children's books and Fairytales because I'm a child who needs pampering, but he also tells me that I've a motherly side which I don't show often but comes up without even trying. I think there's a part of me that agrees to both of his statements. I knew I wanted to re-read it a dozen times, but I think I'll get it better when I'm a mom someday. If ever.

This outpouring is so sweet and genuine, it's wonderful. It's not a review or a vlog, it's just Merphy being a genuinely positive human being and that's great.

I am not a mother, but becoming one someday is one of the deepest desires of my heart. Adoption is incredibly close to me as well. I read this book as a young kid, every theme completely flying over my head. A reread and annotation is most certainly due. I wept along with you, Merphy, and I appreciate what you brought to this story through this review so, so much.❤️

Merph, who cut 1-million onions are rubbed them on my eyeballs!? HAHA
Seeing how much this book affected you was so heart-warming and heartbreaking.
Perhaps that's what we all need after 2020 - a good heart-filling cry.
I think Peter Pan resonates with you so much; because you have the same unconditionally-welcoming heart as the Darlings.
I've never actually red Peter Pan, but I may have to add it to my TBFR for 2021.
Thank you for sharing this! Much respect from Scotland!

My parents were exactly like your parents we had lots of kids from other families in our home, mainly my brothers friends but it was really something when these kid grew up and my parents whom they referred to as their 2nd mom and dad, had invited my parents to their graduations, weddings, their own children's birthday parties, ect. It was really something that parents became like foster/adopted parents to them in their time of need and they never forgot it and continued to show appreciation for them, even they were grown with kids of their own. Even as adults they knew as long as my parents were alive they would always have a place to call home if they ever needed it.

I grew up in a foster home. I was the strange case that move into a foster home at 10 and stayed until adulthood (and then a little beyond). To this day they are still my parents and my kids are their grand kids. The way that the Darlings accepted the lost boys remind me of my parents, who, just as they were preparing for an empty nest, upended their lives to take in this obnoxious, kinda messed up 10 year old and taught him how to be a man.

I‘m not really that into Peter Pan, but every different version of him and or his story I just seem to enjoy every time. It really is something magical with this character. I could not decide which is my favorite after the original story, but the play „Peter and the Starcatcher“ is one of my favorites by far

Hi Merphy, long time fan and don't know how I missed this video when you put it up. Absolutely beautiful explanation and interpretation of this wonderful book, highlighting aspects I'd barely even considered before. Such as your strong emphasis on the Darling parents. One thing I always got from the book was the dichotomy between Peter and Hook, one almost representing some of the negative qualities of childhood; the thought of every thing as a game, the complete whimsy, forgetfulness, quick to change emotion, sense of immortality and superiority etc, while Hook seems to be everything wrong with adulthood; greed, eager to cause pain, unforgiving, ruthless, vile, angry at the world in general, bitter and of course fearful of time passing. I've always loved the way both characters are so different but do share some similarities at the same time.

I loved this gush so much Murphy ❤️ I would be so SO interested to see a video of you digging deeper into meanings behind specific sentences and parallels and metaphors in the book - my brain can only figure out tiny bits of it I’m sure! One of my favourite videos on your channel is your analysis of Snape because it was so in-depth and thought provoking and I would love to see something similar for Peter Pan!

Last year I read Peter Pan for my English Literature class in university. And the part where the Darlings adopt the lost boys hit close to home in certain ways for me. I'm have a condition where I'm not able to have sex nor have children, but I do hope one day be able to adopt a child someday. I only recently subscribed to Merphy's channel, and heard from previous videos that she will be adopting a child. It made me happy knowing that she would open a window for a child. You're amazing, Merphy!

This was amazing, we should do this definitely again.
I am a non native speaker and I had a lot of issues understanding all the things. This helped tremendously understanding the book. So I can't wait for the reread.
Also I was super touched. It breaks my heart that it made you cry, even when it's kind of good and happy tears. But it must have taken so much out of you to film this video. Well done
I wish you a wonderful new exciting year 🎉 lots of new books to discover and adventures to live through with you kids (I think you mentioned the adoption will happen in 2021) 💫

The reason why the think death scene is weird in the book is because it was originally written as a play. At that point in the play, Peter would have called out to the audience and had them clap for think and ask they clapped, she would live
