I used to play goalie as a teen and love when guys would go left side so I could use the glove and "do a Fuhr" and make the stop...be "just like Fuhr" . NO ONE played the glove like him.
Normally, I dislike goalie highlight videos in slow motion with no commentary or crowd noises. But there is something about the way that piano music was playing during such slow motion acrobatic saves taken from an older era that made it very moving for me to watch. Emotional video. As a goalie, I thank you for this effort and salute you.
One thing you should notice how all their goalie equipments back then, from the gloves, blocker, to the pads, are at least 20% smaller than what it is today. Most glove saves today are more like the puck hitting the glove with the goalie barely moving a muscle. But back then, you actually have to react and move your goal to the path of puck to catch it. It was much harder to play that position back then.
Man I miss the days of classic goal tending. It was brilliant to watch. Everyone had a favourite goalie back in the day. It's the equipment that allows goalies to play the modern style of sitting on their knees the entire game, sliding from one side to the other. They had to play a hybrid style with the old gear. A goalie dedicated solely to butterfly would have been lit up. It's not just the ridiculous size of the gear that has changed/ruined the position. The modern goal pads make it so you don't even need the actual flexibility to do a butterfly. The pads flip up so the wide side is always facing up and the edge of the pad is perfectly flush against the ice no matter what. The foot of the pad sticks out 8 inches so you don't need your skate against the post to cover the entire goal line. There are 6 inches of flap above the knee that doesn't sit flush to the leg, so you don't even need to close you knees together to close the 5-hole. There are 4-6 inches of extra padding on the inside of the pad propping the goalie up so their shoulders (with the aid oversize shoulder pads) cover the top corners when they're in butterfly position. The pants and shoulder pads are so huge and fit seamlessly together so there are no holes under the arms or crotch. And the trapper and blocker have gotten ludicrous. The equipment makes more saves now than the goal tenders do. The number of times the puck just hits unaware goalies is ridiculous. Goal tending is no longer about making saves, it's about staying in a neutral position, moving as little as possible and allowing the gear to make the save. The best goalies had far more all around athleticism in the past than they do now. It's become such a boring position to watch. Goalies no longer have to play the puck and there are quick whistles any time the puck hits them.
It's interesting the people that Inspire you. F u h r was the reason I chose to be a goaltender. After watching him. And being left-handed also, I had to try it. Still enjoying my early Sat morning "shinny games" 30 years later
I was just saying this to my wife the other day. We were watching the game, and Skinner was diving all over the crease and making some beautiful saves against Ovechkin. It was so reminiscent of the 80s. I did wonder if Skinner had been taking advice from Fuhr?
See that kids... see how whethet interfered with or not, if you don't give up on duty number 1, you can still make the save! Sort the call out after if need be... dont stop to complain or look at the stripes when the puck is still in play! 🙃
Fuhr is without a doubt the most overrated goalie of all time. If he didn’t have an amazing offense in front of him he would have been sent to the AHL. In 1988 Fuhr won the Vezina with the EXACT same GAA as that stalwart netmjnder Rick Walmsley: 3.43. Good enough for 22nd in the league! More 80s goalie hate. From 1983-1989, Fuhr played in 5 Stanley Cup finals. His GAA is cumulatively 0.13 HIGHER than the NHL average over that same span. So he is in FACT, below average. Glenn Healy 1985-2001. 166-190-47 3.37. .887 Grant Fuhr 1981-2000 403-295-114. 3.38. .887 Between the pipes, they were identical. I guess having a good offense gets you to the HOF. 🤷🏼♂️
Wow..somebody’s really butt-hurt that the Oilers/ Fuhr beat you’re team all the time, either an isles, philly, or Boston fan, I’m guessing Lol If you’re so good at talking stats, YOU NEED TO LOOK AT HIS PLAYOFF STATS/ NUMBERS, then you might wake up, smell the cocoa 🤦♂️..Brian
What about when he got older in St Louis and played 79 and 73 games in two back to back seasons he was in 30s then and that was during the dead puck era offence wasn’t carrying him then
*******you should take of the beer league heroes from the title, it's a fucking disgrace an degrading to the best goaltender of all time.******* please. I beg you.
Greatest clutch goalie of all-time!☝️Luv u Fuhrsie!
With pads half the size of what they are today.
@@DS-gv5fs greatest besides billy smith
When Fuhr was at his best!
Best breakaway goalie I ever saw by far, and Best clutch Goalie I ever saw, and Best Glove hand I've ever seen.

That was awesome! Those are the days that I grew up in Edmonton! Thanks Grant. I miss the 80’s
Greatest goalie to play the game. My favourite anyway! That blocker save at 1:09 has to be one of the most explosive stops ever!

Now that I've watched the video......WOW. Beautiful

Same here. Loved seeing his reaction as they hoisted his name banner in the arena
Just watched this again, and I stand by my comment four years ago!
One of my childhood memories was the Oilers winning the cup..Fuhr was my hero... Love the Nine Inch Nails

ONE OF MY IDOLS AND HEROES
That’s a pretty sweet helmet
He always had cool helmets!
Every kid who collected hockey stickers in 89, knew that this guy was the hardest sticker to find.
That left leg and glove hand combo dude
1:32 rare video of Fuhr stopping a clap bomb from Ovechkin
That fucking looks like ovi 😂🤣😭
I had to look up who was 8 prior to Ovi lmao
Ah, the good ole' days...
The NHL lost something when these great acrobatic goaltenders were replaced with big positional tenders.

Great compilation, why the sad piano tho.
That right hand is a weapon
MY IDOL
Fantastic....but man, that protective equipment is scary minimal.
2:21 😤😭
Highlights without the sound of the announcers or the crowd going nuts? You might want to change that.
See that kids... see how whethet interfered with or not, if you don't give up on duty number 1, you can still make the save! Sort the call out after if need be... dont stop to complain or look at the stripes when the puck is still in play! 🙃
ya Fuhrsie the bestest ever...ever!!
What's with the music? Did he die?
he da best
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Good tribute, but that sound sounds like a funeral one
Wait a minute you stole this video and had the odasty to add your own watermark and new music SMH
1:48 😳😳😳
No Blues highlights??? He was at his best in St louis all while dealing with Keenans bullshit
The music is creepy af for this video.
!!!
Fuhr also regularly gave up 3-4 goals per game...the Oilers would just score 6 or 7 and win.
Piano music was a terrible choice

Calm down

Did you just compare the great Fuhr with that scrub Glen Healy. You must be on crack
What about when he got older in St Louis and played 79 and 73 games in two back to back seasons he was in 30s then and that was during the dead puck era offence wasn’t carrying him then
terrible music
