- / loisdavidsonart www.etsy.com/u... In today's demo I share another one of my daily sky practices, one that take s less than 5 minutes plus drying time, to show that you don't need to set aside much time for practicing loose watercolour landscape painting. For the past 3 years or so, I try to paint at least once a day, and always at least one sky which I think really has helped me to make some progress with my painting. I use various colours and brushes as mentioned in the demo, but please feel free to use whatever colours and brushes you like and are comfortable with if you try something similar.
My board is at an angle of about 45-60 degrees.
Many thanks to my lovely Patrons for your support!
I love watching your skies take form😁
Lois, I love watching you create. I’ve learned so much from your tutorials. Your style speaks to me. I’ve told you this before….you are my very favorite!
Thanks so much, glad you find it helpful!
I really Love to see how you paint, it look so easy, but the painting have its own life. I have started to paint a sky nerarly every day because of you❤️( so now there is a lot of them Im my paintingroom😂😁)and I can see that I have learn a lot how to use my chinese brushes and the mix of colours so Im a big fan and always looking foreward for your next video . Thanks from my heart for all knowledge you learn out to us .
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, I am happy to share, and happy that my videos are helpful!
I've never painted a sky that good in my life. Back to the painting board for me then!
lovely, I like how the right hand side land area looks rather like sparkling water, maybe an estuary etc. Im gonna do some of these. You give me confidence to try.
Thank you, Louis, for another helpful video 🙏
(as you said in another comment: just a practice, not a finished painting, it looks perfect to me, simple, but perfect and ready to be framed)
Thank you for taking your time and generously sharing your knowledge
Very beautiful. thank you so much for the demonstration.
Grazie... bellissimo... devo provare anche io
Proper that is, going to try it on some moorland paintings !
Wow. it's wonderful
The beauty of watercolour
Realy nice! love it! thanks Lois!
I’ve been painting for about 2 years now. I was struggling with trying to control all of my paintings and they were just turning out dull, lifeless and just completely a mess. I started using Hake brushes and Quill brushes and Wow! Hake brushes have allowed me to stay loose and the quill brushes I use instead of rounds. I’m so happy with my paintings now. I’m actually enjoying the paint process now whereas before I was frustrated and stressed. I know they say that if you’re a beginner to stay away from Hake and Quills but actually I think you should start out with them. Made a complete difference in mine. ❤
Hey Lois, yes the more I work on skies the worse they get definitely "less is more" thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you for your very instructive and inspiring videos! I am learning a lot from you!
Thank you so much for this! Very inspiring for a beginner who has no drawing ability - yet really wants to use watercolour. :-)
Wonderful painting. I love your paintings. Thank you for showing.
These look absolutely amazing. So trying this
You are such an inspiration! I learn so much about watercolour and am mesmerized watching you paint. Thank you
Very nice video, thank you for the lesson!
Thanks so much Lois!
Just wonderful.
Amazing sky Lois, very inspiring. Thankyou.
gorgeous colors! just amazing
Lois, Each video contains a gem. I feel inspired to create a rainstorm now . I didn’t think of adding water to the top of the page after the strong paint is applied. I usually add water below the strong paint. Thank you for this.
Thanks so much, I’m glad it was useful! 😊
Hello Lois, you are very good at this style of landscape, it is a real pleasure to see this beautiful sky; Bruno in France
Thanks for your feedback Bruno 😊
Absolutely beautiful. Hope you sell these and get what they’re worth! So so good
Very kind of you to say, but these are just practicing, not finished paintings
Love it! You make it look so simple. I would love to see how much paint you put on your hake brush. Also your water container for your initial wetting of paper. I think that’s where I mess up. Thank you 😊
Thanks Lois , you are a talented instructor and inspiration 👍🖌️
Thanks so much for your feedback and encouragement 😊💐
Absurdly brilliant result Lois in yet another of your suck it and see videos, enjoyable to the end amazing to see how fast the paint moves. Thanks greatly appreciated stay safe and healthy
I'm glad you enjoyed it Philip, Lois

I always have problems with foregrounds. Your sky is lovely.
Amazing!🎉😊

Thank you wondered how to do rain
Yes it needs a lot of practice and patience.. I am still struggling with the sky part.. This was a great demo as always, Lois!!
Thanks so much Varsha, and happy painting 😊🎨
Very effective. As you say, 'less is more'
Thanks so much Robert 🎨
Love this
Thanks!
Is very beatifull
Wspaniałe, dziękuję !
wow
Your work is such a big inspiration to me! I would love to learn about all the materials that you generally use - brushes, paper, easel, etc. Could you maybe do a video or share details like such in the description? ❤️
Thanks. Im afraid not, I believe that any brushes and materials can be used successfully and with practice, so feel it would be counter productive to focus on particular brands and materials 😊
I understand and really appreciate it. I just love that open approach to experimentation. I am curious though, I have never come across a brush like the broad and short one that you use. Is that a specific type of brush? (not specific to a brand but rather the format).
They are hake brushes, the broad one is a cheap one I found on EBay
@@LoisDavidsonArt interesting! I am going to look that one up. Thank you ❤️
You are one of my favourite painters and instructors on UA-cam - do you have a special easel or device that allows you to change the angle of your painting so easily ?
Thank you! I clip my board to a table easel, it is adjustable from steeply angled through to flat
Brilliant and inspiring! Please do more of such videos. Is the paper you are using rough?
Thanks, it’s cold pressed paper
Fabulous...can i ask did you pre-wet the paper before aswell?
Yes I did, mostly the sky, leaving the foreground dry for the dry brush
@@LoisDavidsonArt Pre wetted the paper before you wet the paper for the video i mean ? : )
Ah! No, I never do, I just go straight in and paint
As ever, truly inspirational stuff. Am intrigued by the ordinary decorator's masking tape. I use Frogtape but my paper often cockles. Do you allow the paint to dry after a certain period of time or is this intuitive?
The masking tape works pretty well. The paint drying time at different stages of the painting is something learned through practice, plus a bit of intuition and of course, luck!
Any advise on what I should use as my backing board for watercolor painting?
Thanks
Not really I'm afraid, I just use old acrylic canvas boards as I have them around, maybe try MDF/masonite
👌👌😍
I like to know what type of board you are using under your watercolor paper . Thanks
Hi Sima, its an A3 canvas covered board usually used for acrylic or oil painting, I use it as a board
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎨👍🏻
It would be interesting to hold the board on an angle so that the rain is coming down on an angle instead of vertical
Which kind of brush u r using in this
Certainly not as easy as it looks! I've now tried it 3 times; not seeing any improvement to speak of! :-D
You will, make sure you use enough paint so it doesn't all wash away
@@LoisDavidsonArt Thanks so much for the tip! I'll go for try #5 now. :-D
