I almost agree with you. I would prefer to say instead that Jimmy and Bonzo both play lead roles, while JPJ holds them together. All of them are friggin geniuses. No weak points in this band, which is probably why they are the only band that has no bad songs in their entire catalog.
The key to zeppelin is they were all as important as each other. The skill level and connection between them allowed them to improvise and change on the fly. Also each member was allowed the freedom to shine.

So immensely gratifying to see so many young reactors ( most of them never really exposed to good rock and roll) who seem to absolutely love my music! Good for you for keeping an open mind and giving this great music a chance! Love watching your reactions!

Jay, I love your reactions and appreciation of Zeppelin. I'm a 60 year old grandma and they are still my favourite band of all time!!! If only all younger people could experience the sixties and seventies.
R I P John Bonham. For me, this is the most complete and excellent drumming performance I have ever heard. What an accomplishment. It is entirely, utterly and exhilaratingly Fabulous.
There is an excellent live version of this song from Earl’s Court in 1975. You should check it out. Watching Jimmy play that slide is so good! And Robert’s vocals, so good.
Thank you for doing this. I've been listening to Led Zeppelin for about 35 years. Sharing it with you is like getting hit by this music for the first time again.
Thanks for not stopping it before the ending like quite a number of reactors have, the laughter at the end is an awe inspiring reminder that you are hearing real humans playing real instruments. Now that you have heard the studio version, you should check out their live version as well. And of course there is always digging back into the actual origins of the song, but that is a whole other journey. Keep it going, Zep does not disappoint!
Another one of their best songs from their masterpiece Physical Graffiti. You should really check out Nobody's Fault But Mine. It's quintessential Zep. It has all the elements. ✌
I love this song...it starts out slow gospel, moves to blues, then to heavy rock which they tweak a notch to heavy metal; the history of music encompassed in a single song
I so love your reactions as a young black american. They're exactly like mine as a young white Englishman when I first heard them. It's universal blues rock. Somewhat LSD inspired I suspect.
So, so good JayY- 1st off you picked the *perfect* shirt for this song. And I loved how at 4:17 you said “Jesuuus” and about 3 seconds later Robert said it too. Gives me so much hope for humanity when young folk connect with music like you. ~ we’re not worthy ~
Love the shirt.... chicks digging 70's rock are cool... This is Led Zeppelin at their penultimate... one of my desert island discs for sure. Hey I think you might like Deep Purple , Black Sabbath and YES.
I remember the very first time I heard this album. A group of my school friends and I had been out for a walk in the Malvern Hills (not far from where Jimmy and Robert lived at the time) with our Physics master and we got back to the master's house and one of my friends had just got the album. We sat round and listened to it and it blew my mind. I already had a couple of Zeppelin albums and this was just too good to be true. I went out and bought it the next day. I still have the original vinyl. :)
At 8:47 that triplet fill by John Bonham is part of the greatness of Led Zeppelin and why they really couldn't carry on after he died - he could throw that fill (or fills like it) in at anytime he wanted live. The level of musicianship combined with the spontaneity these 4 guys had together was off the charts. Bands would be trying to nail that drum fill for days and have to re-record and overdub it into the recording. He hit it live, as they were playing the song live, in the studio as the tape was rolling.
One of my favorites. There’s also an amazing live version from 1975 that you should check out. They never played the same song the same way twice. Now that’s talent.
I've told all my close friends and family I want this playing at my funeral. Get's heavy but I like the idea of the awkward faces and reactions. Too bad I won't make it there to see, lol. Correct reaction to an amazing tune.

I fiddle-stickin' love your reactions! You remind me so much of myself when I was hearing their music for the first time, just couldn't believe I could fall in love more with each song. Who could be afraid of dying when it's presented with such amazing beauty?
One of LZ's most powerful songs. Original blues song by Blind Willie Johnson, "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed." You gotta see the live version from Earls Court, 1975; fire! At the end of the studio recording, Robert said "Make it my dying cough." lol They were kidding around.
Except that it's not original to Blind Willie either. He recorded "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed" in '27, released in '28, but the roots of the song go back before that. Lyrics to "Jesus goin' a-make up my dyin' bed" were actually transcribed in a book about unknown street singers published in 1925, so some of the lyrics go back to who knows how far before that. Reverend JC Burnett recorded a song called "Jesus Is Going to Make Up Your Dying Bed" in '26. Blind Willie's version came after that. By '33, Josh White recorded "Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dying Bed" and other variations between '44-'46 as "In My Time of Dying". That one was the basis for Bob Dylan's version in '62 and Zeppelin's version here in '75. There's several other variations along the way as well, but the point is that for those that think this is a Blind Willie original (not saying just you), just don't really know the history of it. In fact a lot of blues songs have lines that carry down from before much of them were recorded on wax cylinder, direct to disc, or later, on tape.
If you haven't reacted to these songs, they should be next on your list! If you want funky, groovy, songs look no further than 'The Lemon Song', 'Out on the Tiles', and their tribute to James Brown 'The Crunge.'
Absolutely mind blowing. I love the effects on Page’s guitar and how he pans left and right on the slide solo. These guys were geniuses! And Bonham’s drumming was just inspired. BTW. This is crazy, but they were improvising a lot of it and didn’t want to stop playing and couldn’t figure out how to properly end it.
