  • My journey across Egypt on motorbike continues as I travel south from Luxor to the city of Aswan, which is famous for it's Nubian influences. Following the Nile River road, I stop at two temples along the way to Aswan; The Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the falcon headed god Horus, and the Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek. Follow my travels into Upper Egypt as I explore ancient ruins, enter warmer weather, and of course, deal with more police checkpoints and escorts 😆

    I've been somewhat binge watching your videos the past few days and I must admit that I am impressed that you have got so deep into Egypt and the places/things it has to offer. I've lived in Egypt most of my life (I don't anymore), and I haven't experienced a lot of the things you've experienced lol It's cool seeing Egypt from the POV of a foreigner who's living there. Egypt is an extremely chaotic country with a lot of issues but you've definitely embraced the chaos and blended in pretty well👏

      Oh wow, that's so awesome to say, thanks man!!! You know, Egypt just has a way of sucking you in! I didn't even plan to stay here, when I first arrived in 10/21 I was just planning to travel the country for 3 months and then continue on to other countries, but after probably a month of being in Egypt I knew I wouldn't want to leave after my 3 months were up, so I decided to look for an apartment to rent and stay on. SO glad I did! Absolutely loving it, I'm happy here and don't plan on leaving anytime soon. Egypt is very chaotic, but I think I thrive in chaos. I love the energy of the streets, the kindness (and humor!) of Egyptians, the delicious food, and the beautiful, soulful music. I'm definitely a foreigner in a foreign land and there are some culture clashes or misunderstandings sometimes, but I vibe with Egypt 😍😎

      Ahaha, thanks lady! I learned how to drive motorbike in Cairo so that helps 😆It's hard to know when to avoid the crowds! It's really just about the tourist buses, but I never know when they are going to show up! As a rule I usually try to be the 1st person at any ancient site because the buses usually take a bit longer to get there, but I left Luxor on my bike at 6am that day and didn't arrive till around 8am, which seems to be exactly when the buses were arriving. Perhaps later in the day would have been better as well, but between stopping at both Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples and then wanting to make it to Aswan before dark, I didn't want to wait until late afternoon to see if the sites cleared up. One can just never know! 😅

    Wonderful! I never went to Kom Ombo and Edfu, so this was especially interesting. I stayed in Aswan at The Old Cataract of Agatha Christie fame - what an amazing place! And even at 68 I’m still travelling - living in Turkey at the moment. PS What’s with the police so freaked out by a woman travelling alone ffs? Pity you can’t tell them ‘imshee’. Great video as always - I applaud you!

I was in Turkey last summer and would love to return and spend more time there, so many different places to explore. Lol actually the police escort all foreigners traveling alone in their own vehicle, even a bicycle. I met a man in his 50's from France when I arrived to my hostel in Aswan who is cycling across Egypt, and the police escorted him in too. He looked extremely displeased 😆 It is quite ridiculous. I probably could have told them imshee, if I said it with a smile. But they wouldn't listen anyway 🙄🤣

      🤣🤣Yes. At ancient sites like this it is SO much better if it is empty. It's hard for me to appreciate what I am looking at or let my imagination run wild like I want to when there is a zoo of people around me shouting, pushing, waiting for me to move, taking photos and selfies, etc. Everyone always appreciates an empty site of course, but I had been half-hoping it would be empty since I was able to take my own transportation there, unlike most people are able to. So I had high expectations, that was my mistake.😆

    Interesting video. I’ve travelled around Egypt by myself on the train and have often been approached by the police asking to see my tickets. I’ve wondered why they do this and it seems it’s for my safety but it is troubling. Looking forward to your Abu Simbel video.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Рік тому

      They only asked you for your ticket, not other passengers? That is strange. Any time I am taking a bus or train I get asked for my ticket, but so do the other passengers, since many people are able to come in and out of the train/bus while it is sitting there, they usually check the tickets once it gets moving. Things are always changing here though, prices go up, foreigners must now pay in USD for trains, it's unpredictable. Thanks for watching Richard! Abu Simbel coming soon 😎

    great video and again, the cat and mouse game with the police, very entertaining for me, less for you 😁, but the escape to the front in the traffic jam was clever! after so many temples and tombs you still have the strength for more, hats off😅. after a certain amount of excavations or monuments, i usually have enough for a while and need nature, the sea or whatever.
    the way back to cairo is long, it would be cool if there was a ship on the nile that would take you and your motorbike back at least part of the way.

Offers of marriage, Uber motorbike drivers asking for my number all the time when I am just trying to use the app to get to my destination. It's ridiculous, but I can't help but laugh at it. They really think I am just going to give them my number? And they usually don't even know any English! I sometimes ask "How would we talk? You don't even speak English and I speak almost no Arabic!" and they just say friends friends! 🤣🙄Friends. Sure.
      Hell yeah I need to make it back to Cairo on the bike. It's part of the journey! And I will be very proud of myself. Even though I thought about putting it on a train at points like this when I am so exhausted. But I can't. It's cheating😆😆

      Lol, darn! But to be honest, I only went this day, who knows if what the security people and stuff told me is completely accurate. It's possible it's like a zoo most days 🤣 It's really tough to know when to visit ancient sites in Egypt, even for me who lives here and can go whenever I want, because I just never know when the buses come in, when the boats pull up, just in general when the busy days and times of days are. Maybe that stuff even varies. I mean, obviously summer is much less busy than winter, but outside of that....it's always a gamble. All you can do is go to the sites and hope for the best 😅

      @@Gventures Thank you! I guess I should stick with it. It is between Edfu and Kom Ombo and I think Edfu seems better from the videos I have seen. I feel Ive experienced worse in other places but I cannot tell how busy Egypt peaked season is versus other places. But it is something I will accept. Ive read conflicting info on how much to tip in general. Do you have a video or will you do a video on some specifics someday?

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  3 місяці тому +1

      @@lordpuppyrd7989 Yeah, I keep getting asked about that, so I should...the problem is, I have no idea myself! 🤣It's a complicated topic, because tipping varies so much depending on a lot of factors. Egyptians in normal daily life don't really tip, they just round up the bill for whatever stuff is and pay that. For example if a taxi costs 54, they will give either 55, or maybe 60 EGP (if they're feeling generous 😆). Same goes for any local restaurant. Fast food places they never tip of course, but sit down restaurants they don't tend to either, unless the service is great, OR if it's a fancy, expensive restaurant. And even then, I don't feel like they tip that much. They do "tip" people for favors, or donate to the needy, but in normal life, they don't usually tip. And that's honestly the way I've always experienced Egypt, even when I was traveling here before I decided to stay and live - I did everything on my own, never taking tours or using tour guides. I stayed at hostels, not hotels, so I didn't need to tip any cleaning staff or bell boys or things like that. I never had any drivers so I didn't need to tip them. I took Ubers, I entered sites on my own, and explored everywhere solo (and I still do), so my knowledge on the subject is limited. But I will say, even though I live and travel like a local, some (or many) people do expect me to tip (or tip more) just because I am a foreigner. So expect that. If you tip someone, depending on who they are, they might act like it's not enough, but it probably is more than sufficient. Like tomb guards at ancient sites, for example. If they have done nothing (save for letting me walk by them into the tomb 😆), I won't tip them. I have had tomb guards ask me for money on my way out and I'm like "For what?!" and laugh good-naturedly and walk away, telling them to have a good day. If the tomb guard does a little but not much (like take a photo or something), I will tip them like 10-20 pounds (though you can tip more if you can afford it and want to make their day). If they walked around and explained stuff to me (and I actually wanted it and what they did was helpful, maybe they showed me something I would have never seen before had they not shown me - like the tomb guy in this video showing me the skull 🤣) ua-cam.com/video/I1lWBmQIEiw/v-deo.html Then I will tip them like 50. I have tipped even more, like 100 or 200, but honestly that was EXTREMELY generous. But, I could afford it and I wanted to make that guy's day. He also showed me around a lot (I'm talking about the guy at the end of the video that shows me around Karanis ua-cam.com/video/YdFJzfn8aOw/v-deo.html But the first temple in the video I didn't tip anything, because the guys didn't do anything for me, save for give me my ticket (at the end 😆). Also, many times a guard might try to follow you around and explain stuff, but if you don't want it, just tell them "It's okay, no thank you, I walk alone, no money, no tip, no baksheesh" or something like that, just so they don't waste their time and ask for tips after, making you feel bad if you don't give them anything. All the prices mentioned above were in EGP, btw.
      I know what most people are asking about is tour related stuff, like tipping: drivers, tour guides, hotel staff, things like that. And that's where it gets really complicated. Because there are different "levels" of tour companies, ranging from extreme luxury to cheap tours. Quality of tour companies also vary, some are great and have wonderful tour guides, others not so much (from what I hear). There are group tours and private tours. Half day tours, and tours that last a week (when arranged with a company like some sort of package). Because I've never done any of that, I don't know. I have taken a few tours in the past, one was the hot air balloon ride in Luxor, and another to the Black and White Desert, and one more while I was in Siwa I took a day tour around and saw some ancient sites. The hot air balloon ride they asked everyone for tips at the end, I saw many people did not tip, which I thought was kind of rude, personally. I tipped I think like 100 EGP (at the time it was worth around $5 USD). I did not tip the driver or the boat guys that took us to the balloon. If all the other tourists on that balloon tipped 100 or even 50, it would have been good for them. But many did not. I can't remember if I tipped the guy in Siwa, but I think I tipped him well, because he only charged me $30 for the day tour and it seemed low to me. Also, he was a cool guy and I had a lot of fun. Black and White desert "2" days and night (it was more like a day, a night, and a morning) was a group tour as well, and I think I tipped like 150 or 200 (at that time, $1 USD was worth 15 EGP, so I think I tipped well for that, considering it was a group tour). Again, many tourists did not tip much, but if they had, it would have been better for the guys working (although to be honest they didn't do much, it was just a couple of bedouins that drove us around). I'm a budget backpacker, if I had more money I would have tipped even more. Sorry for the long novel and no clear answers. I guess, tip what you can, be generous if you can. They really appreciate it, and you will also get better service if you do. Tip hotel staff a few dollars for the day. Tip the drivers $5-$10 for the day if you can. Tip the guide $30-$50 a day if you can (maybe more if it's luxury? Who knows 😆). But it all depends on the cost of the tour in the first place as well. If the day tour itself costs $30, then you're probably not going to tip the guide $30 😅 See what I mean about "it's complicated?" One last thing: tour guides always bring you to stores/vendors that they/the company knows, and they make commissions on the stuff you buy. ALL the tour companies do this. If you know how to barter, you're better off going to the market on your own and stopping at different shops and negotiating a price without anyone there that is making a profit from what you buy.....hope this helps, a little 😅 Good luck!

      @@Gventures Thank you so much. Our tour will be private and we will be visiting Cairo/Giza, Alexandria, Fayoum, Black/White Desert overnight, Aswan (w/ Abu Simbel) and Luxor. My understanding is different guides for the different major cities of Cairo/Luxor/Aswan so I will have to confirm how long I have each person so I can tip at end. Unless daily is better. Also I will be making requests to not stop for any shopping and will tell them we don’t shop. We don’t buy souvenirs when we travel since we travel light anyways. So far from communication-wise I am actually impressed, I get a response and what I want within 24hrs of email. I made a few changes already and felt bad making some requests and they ultimately said “it is a private tour and you can do whatever you want” and so far no change in fee. Thank you again for some guidelines on the amount. I would gladly tip more if our experience is good and if a guide can manage to avoid some major pitfalls or challenges that I’d face if I were to travel without one. Culturally it will be an adjustment to say tip a bathroom attendant though lol

    Hi Giselle, that was some kind of an action packed travel video. The Nile river, great temples, roads, trafic and cops. I've heard from several people that the Egyptian police stopped them to ask for an id even in Cairo. I think it worths the small annayonce because it offers a magnificent history and culture. I have a simple question. I'm more intrested in Luxor, Aswan and nearby. I would like to spend 7 days. Is it enough to cover all the sights? Which city should I select as a base city to cover more places? Are all the sites easy as DIY. Is it possible to find day tours to visit more sites?

      Thanks!
      7 days is not enough for anything in Egypt, there's too much history here 😅 I've been to Luxor twice and still haven't seen everything. However, 7 days is probably enough to see some of the major sites in those cities (Aswan and Luxor), if you are constantly sightseeing. Luxor is probably the place to stay since there is a TON of history there (it's known as "the world's greatest open air museum"), Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Colossi of Memnon, Ramesseum, Deir el-Medina, the list goes on and on. A little north of Luxor you have Dendera Temple (also known as the Temple of Hathor), and to the south of Luxor in between Aswan and Luxor you have Edfu Temple and further south Kom Ombo Temple. Then south of Aswan you have Abu Simbel (which is a LONG drive there and back). There will always be tours offered in places, tons of options for that, so you don't really need to book in advance if you don't want. It may be cheaper if you just wait to get a tour here, though I can't speak to the quality of the tour/tour guide, of course (I never take tours myself). You WLL need a tour to get to Abu Simbel though from Aswan, as that is a very long journey and almost impossible to get there yourself. However, hostels (and hotels probably) will offer tours to Abu Simbel, as well as many little tour shops. Those tours usually leave Aswan at like 3 or 4 am, drive to Abu Simbel and Nefertiti temple to make it there around sunrise, and then drive back. When I was in Aswan my hostel was offering that tour for 500 EGP. Prices may have gone up since then because of inflation, but that was the going price in February of 2023. Best of luck!

    Your face expression was like “how annoying this is”… when it comes about temples too much people really ruin the view and you can’t enjoy well 🙄🙄 but anyway great video 👍🏻👍🏻

    I could travel to all the temples, tombs and tourist spots and not see one person. I'd be fine with that. It's hard to enjoy the experience with a hundred people around you. There should be a compilation video of you ditching the police. 😂

    Whenever u go police escort u 😂 you becoming most important person in Egypt. 😂 Even the president doesn't have as much escort as you have 🚒🚑🚙🏍️🏍️you r so lucky I never had any cop to care about my safety 😂😂😂even when I crashed my motorbike into a taxi

      You have a high level of humor, more escorts than the president 🤣 Sorry the police didn't care about you crashing your bike, they should have helped then. But I do not consider myself lucky for having a police escort, I find it extremely exhausting and annoying. They slow me down and I went on this trip alone because I wanted to travel solo, not so a truck full of men could follow me around

      The temple clips are kind of long and boring without the short voiceover. I keep the description rather short, and others on the channel have told me they enjoy it. Anyway, I wanted to give some context to what people are looking at. It only lasts for several seconds to under a minute.
