  • I've been living in Cairo for over 2.5 years, and today I'll be showing you some tips and tricks on how to barter in the markets of Egypt. I'm headed to Khan el-Khalili, the oldest and most famous market here in Cairo, to show you how it's done. Yalla bina!
    Want to donate to the channel? You can buy me a shawarma! 😂 But really, I just found out this website "buy me a coffee" exists and created an account, because, well, why not? I really just appreciate your support by watching my videos and I'm not asking you to donate, but, if you feel like it, now there's a place you can. Donations will probably just go to me making more street food videos. Here's the link: www.buymeacoff...
    Welcome to the channel! I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. Giselle is one of the few UA-camrs who enjoyed Egypt as it is, without been triggered too much by the culture. It only shows that appreciation is a powerful tool that you can use to your advantage anywhere in the world.

    The best way if you are not from Egypt is to get a local guide

      I agree..even an arabic speaking person will pay more without a local

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Місяць тому +10

      Ah, sorry to say, but that is not entirely true. I know many guides and people that work in tourism, and the guides make commission on the things you are buying. So the more money you pay and spend, the more money they make. It's profitable for them. I could give many examples of this that I know for a fact happened and people paid more than they should have

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Місяць тому +4

      I don't think it's true about the guide thing, because guides make money off the things you buy in the market, and they all have their connections, shops they bring you to that have "good prices," but actually they are just making commissions and you could find better deals if you went out and tried on your own. But I do agree, if you are not local, they will charge you more, whether you speak Arabic or not doesn't matter. They will think you are 5aleegy and rich. Even Egyptians that have been abroad for a long time get charged a lot, I have met up with a few Egyptian subscribers that live abroad and have been for a long time, they tell me they are treated like a foreigner. The locals can tell 😅

    • @anUntouchable
      @anUntouchable Місяць тому

      @@Gventures yeah depends who you get and the arrangement - you could end up getting ripped off even worse 😂😂😂If it is an honest guy (preferably not from the area so he/she doesn't not have relationships with the shop owners) and you have an arrangement where the understanding is you want to pay Egyptian prices and you agree a fair price for their service for the day - they will look out for you! 💯

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Місяць тому +2

      @@anUntouchable I'd like to think that's true. But I can only imagine that any tour guide offering services in Cairo will be familiar with Khan el Khalili and have their connections there. Bargaining gives me headaches, but it is necessary sometimes lol! Also, I believe they always refer to you as Shakira because of a music video for her late 1990s song Ojos Asi, in which her hair was dyed red, and it just clicked for them that a Latinx with red hair=Shakira. The song was hugely popular in Egypt, especially since she sang some Arabic in it. I hope this provides some clarity.

      @@anaisamoh I completely agree! It's irritating to me that Egypt has such a bad rep online, because it's simply one side of things, and usually in extremely touristic places. I almost think people just like to join the bandwagon of complaining, like they are looking for bad things to happen even before they arrive, and there seems to be so many UA-camrs that are just hoping for any small negative experience so they can write "SCAMMED!" in the title of their video. I mean sure, scams exist, like they do anywhere in the world. But the majority of my experiences here have been overwhelmingly positive in Egypt.
      Must be nice to blend in! The only way I could manage that is if I wore a hijab, which I will never do, because I hate anything on my head, even a simple hat. But yeah, Egypt is awesome. I'm glad we have both had good experiences here and love the country ❤

      Fixed prices would be a good word to use. But I don't think you'll find any shops with fixed prices (labels on them), or they would be very few and far in between. I actually can't ever remember seeing a shop that is selling souvenirs that had prices labeled on them in Egypt. If there is such a shop, I imagine it would be overpriced anyway. And then, with that thought, if you're willing to spend a lot of money for less of a hassle, then you could just not bother negotiating in the market and pay whatever the vendor is asking for right away. Depending on the strength of your country's currency, your style of travel and the amount of money you like to spend, it might still not be too much for you 🤷‍♀️

      Wasn't that in February of 2022? I know it lost a lot of value at that time, I remember the panic on the streets as well. After the Ukraine/Russia war started late February 2022, it took a big hit. It has dropped several more times since then. It has finally leveled out a bit and isn't constantly fluctuating, ever since they floated the pound, which has also eliminated a lot of the black market, but obviously times are tough and things are not like they used to be.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Місяць тому +1

      That will completely depend on what you want to do, how much time you have, and what you enjoy. Luxor is much closer to Hurghada and is full of ancient sites, so if you want to explore temples and tombs and don't want to travel as far, I would probably recommend Luxor. But it is of course smaller than Cairo and Giza, and hence feels a lot more touristic. Honestly, I don't love Luxor all that much, but that's just because I don't like to do too many touristic things in one day, and I love big cities and chaos, so Cairo/Giza is more my style. Cairo/Giza is of course further away from Hurghada and has less ancient history than Luxor, but obviously has the pyramids of Giza, as well as many other historical sites ranging from Christian history to Islamic history. If you want to just explore the city and streets, wander in markets, try different foods and feel the big city vibes, then you may enjoy Cairo/Giza more. It all depends on your preferences.

      Souvenirs, like statues and papyrus and stuff? Probably here in Khan el Khalili. It is the largest area with the most variety, and because there is so much competition, you have more options and a better chance of getting a lower price. For normal things that don't have ancient Egypt stuff on it, like a regular scarf or just a normal bag or something, other areas are better.

    I would only go shopping with a local if i was already hanging out with them and even then only if it was a big ticket item. Egyptians are no more likely to allow trade to walk away than anywhere else in the world. It may help if you reflect that the price you agreed at point of sale was the right price. No point spoiling your day or even your holiday for the price of a white wine spritzer back home.😊

      That's exactly what I use! For most of the video, that's what I am using, as it is my vlogging camera. But for some scenes (especially while riding the motorcycle) I was using GoPro12.

      Yes you can get a visa on arrival in Alexandria, as long as your nationality is eligible for a visa on arrival. I actually mention that in this video:

    Iam Egyptian and believe me I don't go to these markets because I am afraid of being scammed I go to the stores which have fixed prices

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  22 дні тому

      I go to local markets all the time and don't get ripped off. Generally the markets have lower prices than stores with fixed prices, you just gotta know how to negotiate. But Khan el Khalili is quite touristic, I never go shopping here unless I am buying cliche souvenirs for friends or family. If I want a scarf or something like that I will go to Al Moski or Ataba, or some smaller market around my apartment

      I think the evening is best, because it is more lively then. Anytime from 6pm or later. Maybe 7pm or 8pm even, but it just depends on when you want to go/how late you want to be up/out.

      Damn, and that worked?? Well, I suppose if you wear hijab or can blend in a bit and appear as an Egyptian woman at a glance. If I go shopping with my bf who is from Cairo (met him here), as soon as they see me it's obvious I am a foreigner and they will charge me a high price, it doesn't matter if I am with him or not. In fact, even when me and him were shopping for motorcycle stuff, I told him to go ahead of me and ask the prices so they would give him a real price. If I had walked up with him they probably would have told him a higher price too, just because I was with him.
