I used to play smash when I was little, fav character was Samus. Never knew she was a girl. When brawl came out, and I was just testing the new final smash, I think I never had a bigger mind blow before then. I now am an avid metroid fan, and have played super, zero mission, fusion, classic, and 2. Have yet to play prime, because my mom got rid of my Gamecube. Fuck.
First time I saw Samus was the original Smash Bros. And that was also when I found out she was a girl. I was playing the game with my older brother and one of us shot Samus with the blaster. And I don't know if it was timing but we paused the game. That's when we noticed Samus had a more female figure. I think we were both surprised by that.
And if you did the solo mode with her, you could see her helmet and her head in reflection (like if she put it on a table or something) with the long blond hair. That's how I discovered, she wasn't a robot or a man. Now I'm a big fan of all Metroid games too xD
Emulation of the gamecube actually isn't that bad. S'long as you bind a standard controller properly it'll still feel fine too. If you're itching for more 2D Metroid, AM2R is the thing for you.

I’ve never played a Metroid game and my first likely will be dread. This video has made me like Samus and her character (assuming this is accurate.) This video is kick ass and hopefully the game will be too.
Kraid getting millions of views because of this video (and later his return in Dread) must’ve been a good feeling for people who like more Metroid villains besides Ridley.

Yoshio Sakamoto was actually more to blame for that, as he was the creative genius behind Other M's writing. And there are far more disturbing things about Samus's portrayal in Other M than just her sexualization.
Super Masterman 64 The repeated removal of her armor throughout the game to reveal her skin-tight Zero Suit is a big example. Just to clarify, I have nothing against the suit, I just don't like how they showed it so often. I preferred it when seeing Samus without her armor was a surprise for players at the end of the game. I honestly was shocked when I first played Super Metroid and found out Samus was a girl at the end. All this time, I saw her as a badass -- and I still do, but she's a badass first and a woman second. Also, I'd like to borrow a quote from Yahtzee Croshaw: "A character previously established to have a bold, independent spirit has to be surrounded by big, burly men in case she starts getting emotional and having periods, having to rescue her at one point when she starts freaking out at the sight of the recurring boss monster she's killed about fifty squintillion times throughout the series." That, along with the aforementioned suit removal, strips the image of a badass action heroine from Samus and reduces her to a weak female. Samus is not inherently a female badass; she is a badass who happens to be female. That is, her femininity is not central to her character. This game brought her femininity to the forefront, seemingly to capitalize on the Zero Suit sex appeal. Seriously, I like Samus more as a gender-ambiguous badass than the wimpy girl she is in this game. Long story short, Sakamoto is the George Lucas of video games.

I’ve never played a Metroid game and my first likely will be dread. This video has made me like Samus and her character (assuming this is accurate.) This video is kick ass and hopefully the game will be too.
Kraid getting millions of views because of this video (and later his return in Dread) must’ve been a good feeling for people who like more Metroid villains besides Ridley.
It's crazy to think this was made 9 YEARS ago, and im here rewatching it again because i had a random moment of remembering this animation and loving the art and expressions, and animation, lol and only NOW looking at the credits and seeing REA also helped in this not knowing who she was at the time but now a fan of hers and see this is just mindblowing lol

Super Masterman 64 The repeated removal of her armor throughout the game to reveal her skin-tight Zero Suit is a big example. Just to clarify, I have nothing against the suit, I just don't like how they showed it so often. I preferred it when seeing Samus without her armor was a surprise for players at the end of the game. I honestly was shocked when I first played Super Metroid and found out Samus was a girl at the end. All this time, I saw her as a badass -- and I still do, but she's a badass first and a woman second.
Also, I'd like to borrow a quote from Yahtzee Croshaw:
"A character previously established to have a bold, independent spirit has to be surrounded by big, burly men in case she starts getting emotional and having periods, having to rescue her at one point when she starts freaking out at the sight of the recurring boss monster she's killed about fifty squintillion times throughout the series."
That, along with the aforementioned suit removal, strips the image of a badass action heroine from Samus and reduces her to a weak female. Samus is not inherently a female badass; she is a badass who happens to be female. That is, her femininity is not central to her character. This game brought her femininity to the forefront, seemingly to capitalize on the Zero Suit sex appeal. Seriously, I like Samus more as a gender-ambiguous badass than the wimpy girl she is in this game.
Long story short, Sakamoto is the George Lucas of video games.
