    Lots of people don’t understand this. Magnus was late. According to the rules, the clock should have started. Instead, his opponent asked for the clock to not start. This was Magnus showing thanks for not starting the game, but also letting his opponent know that wasn’t necessary. He is basically saying “thanks for not starting the clock, but it was my mistake to be late so you are owed the extra time”.

      During the start of the match, before the first move, it's mutual understanding that they arrange the pieces, most of the GMs would say "Adjust" while adjusting pieces.. Otherwise it's mutual understanding.
