    I'm confused as to what you're expecting/wanting out of the kit? Your speed seems right on par with American style (longtail) mudmotor. I run the 9x5 on my 13hp backwater same boat and motor it's a lil much ,but once it wears a bit I see 15 to 17mph consistently have seen as high as 19mph with just me (215lbs) absolutely nothing else in the boat. I was told when I bought mine to expect around 15mph with my set up. Most all American style long tails in that hp run in that range.

      I'm seeing what the kit is capable of doing. After reading a few of your comments and tips you left me, I thought I would test out the 9x5 and 9x4 props and see how they compared to the 8x4 prop. Thats what this video is about. As for the general overview, I am testing/reviewing the backwater kit so I can compare it to the other mud motor kits I have tested/reviewed in the past. I was expecting faster speeds and better performance out the Backwater kit when I first bought it because there was a lot of people recommending it. I didn't know the backwater kit would only get the 15mph, and didn't know that "american style" longtails would only get 1/2 to 3/4 the speed of a thai style longtail. It didn't cross my mind and I didn't know that, but now I'm learning about it. So I'm trying to see if I can get faster speeds.

      Carson Keitt .... love your backwater videos !!! One of the reasons I bought a backwater . Went with the vtwin 13 though. I get about 15-16 on a tracker 15ft jon.

    Interested to see what the next prop does. My rpms are about the same range and was wondering if I should get a prop to rev it higher.

      JTgatoring I have a vanguard 13hp vtwin. I am about 100-200 rpms off max. Not really sure if that’s a big deal?

      @@2ndrambo1 That sounds like a sweat engine. If you are at 3500 to 3600 and above, that prop is probably the best choice. If you are running at 3400 or less, then at that point it may be more beneficial to try a smaller prop

    I know you've been struggling with speed. I was just wondering when the last time you adjusted the valves was? These little motors are very sensitive to valve timing. I check mine every oil change (8hrs). They usually need minor adjusting every time. .004-.005 for intake and exhaust gives me the best results each time with my 8x4 prop. I cruise @ 3800 rpm and 17-18 mph with the same hull. No gator glide or anything yet.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 роки тому

      I haven't ever opened up the engine. I'm not experienced with engines. I change the oil and order the spark plug number that the manual says. I think the problem is with the kit, not the engine. I'm going to be taking the Backwater kit off the engine and putting the old swamp runner kit on the same engine and see if it runs and performs as normal.

    • @gbstrick1
      @gbstrick1 4 роки тому +1

      @@JTgatoring Bummer. Valves are very easy. Just pop the valve cover off and you'll have access. A set of feeler gauges ($12) and some hand tools is all you'll need to adjust them. Your motor will perform much better after adjustment, regardless of the kit.

      I checked the valve clearance and they were spot on. .004 fit nice, .005 fit tight, and .006 would not fit

    You think maybe the prop weight is holding back the RPM’s. Extra inch of metal is kinda like adding bigger tires to your truck.

      @Addison Estes This mud motor is the the Backwater Swomp Lite Glider Kit. I got the 23mph with the Swamp Runner Mud Motor Kit. I am just testing out different mud motor kits and the Backwater is what I'm testing right now. The backwater kit is just a slower kit. The shaft is shorter so the shaft angle isn't prime. It is a heavier prop but I don't know if that is the reason for RPM drop. The prop is just too big

      JTgatoring I’m considering a little mud motor rig for a 1236 Jon boat I acquired this year. Possibly an 8hp. Which backwater kit did you have giving you peak numbers?

  • @justinhouser7554

    Why don't you run electric start, don't you already keep a battery on board for your trollinf motor?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 роки тому +1

      I haven't had a problem with the pull start. Its just what I'm used too. With putting on different mud motor kits, I'm moving the engine around a lot and adding another set of cables is just another step in the process when switching so for right now I'm keeping it simple. Once I get settled in with one kit and engine then I may hook it up.

    • @JTgatoring

      It is what the boat can handle though. This transom has already been reinforced and is still having a rough time handling the 13hp engine. A 22 or 23hp engine would make the rear squat too much due to the weight, along with being too much power for it. I get 23mph with this 13hp engine and a longtail. A bigger engine would be nice but for most people in a 1436 it isn't practical.
