The biggest lie feminism spread is that women would feel happier exchanging kids for a career.
Instead of working at home for your family, you’ve borrowed 150k in student loans to work for a corporation. You don’t save (based on statistics), can’t bankrupt the loan, can’t afford to buy a home on single income. But hey, they tell you it’s better to wear heels to the office than be barefoot and pregnant, so go you, you boss babe!

I read a report of sorts by a dad sending his kid to kindergarten and discovering the "culture" there--like teachers and other parents badmouthing your family to each other if you weren't giving gifts to the teacher regularly and more--and I sent it to my brother and sister-in-law, who shortly will have a kid to possibly send to kindergarten. And they said they are sure this must basically be Gucci kindergarten...and to quite my dad, nah I don't think.

I remember the folks with 7 kids and driving a Caddy to drop them off at daycare. They always got the government vouchers to pay for the care. I ended up working nights and wife worked during day. What was the final straw was being forced to pay twice for the government food program that the care provider signed up and got a piece of the pie. Glad i pulled my kids out and found out the money situation improved greatly.

My mom, God rest her soul, stopped working as a regional manager for the huge company she was at to take care of my brother and I, she got a job bartending nights and weekends, and after taking daycare out of the equation, it was about a 300 dollar a month raise for her on average. (She was at a Mexican restaurant so cinco de mayo and mothers day totalled up to be about half her annual tips) That's not including cost savings of being a home maker like cooking cleaning doing laundry etc.
Her maternity leave for my younger brother ended in January of 1994, she gave her 2 week notice her first day back.
If it's been true for 30 years, it's probably gonna stay true, just do the math for your personal situation, or if you absolutely have to work, at least don't pay for it.

What Dave said about the lady "mother" working outside the home and not be "worth it" is EXACTLY why my husband and I decided before having kids that I would stay home full time with the kids. Daycare has related costs that increase its price. First is the cost of formula. Children have to be bottle fed ( vs breast fed) so the mom ends up sending pre prepared bottles with the child to daycare. Then diaper costs are higher. Moms have to send disposable diapers with the child whereas if the child is home she has the option of using cloth diapers. Then there is the life cost to the child. By that I mean, daycares are instutional living vs a home environment. Who knows what the future emotional cost will be on the child. (Isn’t that why we got rid of orphanages and went to a foster care system? Because of the negative effects on a child of an institutional lifestyle? Now we’re doing the same thing to our own kids, handing them over to an instutional system to raise!)

I read your book in 1994 and it reinforced my decision to stay home with my children. I have no regrets and stayed home despite having an engineering degree. My husband and I lived off half of our income before we had children to help make that easier. My husband also has an engineering degree, and I grew up in the first generation college graduate millionaire next door household. Dad also had an engineering degree. After reading your book I attended a course at our church by another author about money management. When that author stated in the course that you should always pay cash for cars everyone started laughing. Everyone in the class was older than us, but we were the only ones with paid off cars. We had a new $7000 car and a newer used $13000 car.

Instead I pay $1150, which is still a lot, basically half of my husband’s paycheck. Only one more year before she’s in Kindergarten and we can use that money to pay off debt 😂

There's a point near where the math breaks even where you have to consider what the mom wants and needs and what the kids need. If mom is going bonkers staying at home, wants to work and the kids can have a good day care but there's a bit of loss? Work! If it's better for the kids to have their sane mom at home? By all means, stay home

I made the decision to work part time. I was so lucky to find a part time option in my profession (actuary), which I think most mothers would prefer. I didn’t want to leave the work force entirely because I thought it would make it much harder to get back into it when my kids started school. Or make it harder to re-enter the workforce if, God forbid, something were to happen to my husband and he couldn’t earn. A lot of my income was eaten up by childcare in those early years, but I thought of it as keeping my foot in the door and as a safety net for our family. Not just a cash flow question for the moment. Now they’re both in school and I still work part time which allows me to take care of all kinds of other household management tasks and not lose my mind. I wish more companies were open to hiring PT workers! They all think in terms of FT though.

Speaking of math, many years ago, (2014?) I wised up and did the financial math of someone who was on social security disability. After the lack of commuting expenses, the section 8 housing benefits, not paying social security taxes, paying no or almost no income taxes, getting the "Obamaphone" benefit, the lack of paying medical insurance premiums, and some other stuff I can't think about right now, it put her income right about where I was at $14/hr full time. The $14/hr was a bit more, but it was definitely not much. And I was paying on a mortgage at the time.

For her under the section 8, it was just under $400/mo. That is over a $587/mo benefit TEN YEARS AGO. Figure in all the other stuff and like we determined, it wasn't far off.
The story could continue, right up to the "I have no money" and all sorts of ergonomic issues, but getting on a plane to San Francisco to see a concert was okay to do. Sleeping until noon every day was fine. Waking me up at 4am Sunday morning about problems with a car I let her borrow... Yeah, no. And they wonder why I have issues with the welfare system.

On average when both parents are working one of the incomes will go to paying daycare for children. Basically the mother is working to pay someone else to raise her children with their values. Our society has taught women to be afraid to stay at home and raise their children with their own values. They are taught to think that being at home as mom raising your own kids is oppressive.

As a women i can confidently say staying at home your whole life does put women in a losing position. It means putting up with a man who can be an alcoholic/cheater/abuser and you cant get a divorce as you have no source of income and a lot of women get no alimony.
Also with millennials and GEN Z and cost of living increasing so much you cant sustain a family on single income unless you marry rich. What is a SAHM meant to do in case of death or critical illness of her husband the longer you stay home the more difficult it is to get a job.

If you want to save the most money you should live with your parents and help pay off their mortgage. Live with them and inherit the house, that will get paid off far faster. As a parent you should have tons of kids and as soon as they grow up keep them with you and have a big huge house that they help pay for. Why should kids move out and then only see their parents a couple times a year?

In regards to mom guilt, if you took out a bunch of student loans to get a degree and a good job but then decided to stay home, you should feel guilty about heaping that financial burden on your family. At least work until the loans are paid off. Also, dads absolutely deal with guilt. If they work too much, they’re guilted for not spending enough time with the family. If they don’t work much or don’t make much, they’re guilted for letting their family down and not being man enough.
