  • Part 41! 1968 VW Radical Custom Ian Roussel Revises The Roof Line 🤓
    The roof structure of this custom VW appeared to have the opportunity to deform as the bodywork continued on the roof. Tune in to see if Ian can "truss" this......
    We are getting close to 100k SUBSCRIBERS! Please subscribe if you haven't and SET YOUR NOTIFICATIONS!
    There are no rules in car customization, and if there was a rule it would be to go as far outside of the box as your fabrication skills can take you. Ian envisioned a simple and radical solution to this style of door opening. He walks himself and Jamie through the process, with pretty satisfying results. This is only the beginning. Come journey with Ian out of this world fully into the outer space of KUSTOMS. 🛸 🛸 🛸 🛸
    "Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
    The backstory...
    Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
    His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.
    Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing UA-cam audience.

      Wow Ian, that made a tremendous impact on the looks.

      When you first started I thought you where going for a Tom Daniel's Red Baron Hot-Rod (1969) style with the helmet top, but quickly realized nope. The direction you are going in will be much much better.

    I have to say, I’ve been working with fiberglass matting for years and always brushed the resin on the vehicle, put the mat on, then brushed more over it. Today I did it like you showed a few videos back, damn is that an awesome way to do it! Uses less resin and way faster! Love your show and these videos are just freaking awesome! Thank you for having the patience to teach us all some new tricks!

    Two words- Ratchet Wrench 🔧 I use them more than regular ratchets now. 🙂 Since I’m on the subject of “ratchet” I would’ve used a ratchet strap side to side around the roof to hold it while I slid it into place then pulled the strap out after both sides were in under the metal skin. I love watching you work man. I wish I was right there helping/learning/adding. Thanks for all the hard work making these videos guys. ✌️ peace

    I never get tired of watching Ian work. I've learned so much over the years and am so happy that you are giving us this real look into the process; it's so much better than the magic wand versions on the MT thing. I am really getting a better handle on the mockup process with all of the changes in direction, rework, starting over and such. To have a celebrated expert and consummate artist such as Ian reveal his "secrets", methods and thought processes is truly a wonderful and unselfish gesture. @@fullcustomIan You are very welcome. I've been watching Ian since his first shows on tv and your YT channel is exactly what I've said forever that I wish car build shows were, "fine, that's great -- now take out the false-peril of the 'upcoming auction' or whatever bullshit and give me 20 hours of video showing the build instead of 45 minutes." Ian's always been way better than most about that, but with this channel, we're on episode 41 of the VW and it is only starting to have a roof! Awesome. So interesting. I can't believe all the projects you guys juggle, but it is so engaging watching you think and work your way through them.

    • @fullcustomIan
      @fullcustomIan  Місяць тому +1

      @@ronjenkins8529 We really appreciate that. It is true. It is a very long process and you sometimes have to let them sit for a bit to really refine them. We are happy that our channel is finally becoming more recognized for the "what it really takes" side of building, instead of caving into a timeframe that people expect at times. It seems though, once it all starts to come together it just happens so quickly! Thank you again for your generosity and kindness.

    I wish this was happening live. I'm sitting here telling you to make a bunch of slices side to side to make the top flexible enough that there isn't a serious amount of pressure on the angle iron. Once the top is fiberglassed to fill in the slices, it will hold its' shape. It's called kerfing or kerf bending. It's done to wood mainly but this would apply to fiberglass as well.

    Hello Ian. I have been following you since I found your "Back From The Dead" in the $2 DVD bin at Walmart, lo, these many years past. Please don't do anything to the VW Kustom until you walk out in the sagebrush and give it that 100 yard squint. The crease in the roof behind the visor looks really good on TV. And goes with the droop of the nose and even the wake-rider tow ring in back. Epoxy bonds to clean steel and ordinary fiberglass resin really well, so you could stick the fiberglass part under the steel without losing too much of that crease. Just a little of your Bondo magick and ready to rock.
