People don't understand how talented this legend is! He literally mastered the art of pottery to the limit where he started a whole new genre of it! When i first saw his end products i couldn't believe that it was made on a pottery wheel, kinda was in denial, and then i watched his videos and was stunned! A true pioneer.
The balance and faith in those hands ... tool use and muscle memory ... I will always have those goals namaste 🙇 its all about free concept... it incorporates stuctured and organic ... much appreciated.
A lot of the comments here seem to be using a "craft pottery" yardstick for art pottery. He's a noted fine art potter, not a functional ware potter. Much of the point is to play with the visual tension and drama of something being off-kilter and "caught in movement." That's not a failure, any more than Jasper Johns "failed" to paint a "perfect" American flag, or Meret Oppenheim "failed" to make a usable cup and saucer and spoon. I'm not saying Michikawa is in quite the same league-but at least use an appropriate yardstick to judge. At the same time, these techniques are useful to and usable by craft potters. It's very kind of him and of the Art College to share them with all of us.
Unbelievable skill. He understands the clay almost down to the molecules knowing how it will respond to every one of his touches and tools. That is being a MASTER of your craft.
at first it's hard to "get the point" but after seeing him work for a bit - you DO get the point! I'm sure I could never afford one of his pieces, but watching him make some - it's a privilege.
Fascinating work to watch. He's very strong to do so much in one session. I would imagine this could be great for emotional healing. Therapeutic, peaceful, meditative skill.
Wow, he makes everything look so easy, but it takes many many years to get to his skill level. Some never get there. Each item he made gets your mind thinking of ways to use that technique.
He's a remarkable influence in technique, and vindicates others of his philosophical persuasion, who practice in less adventurous group settings. I've shown this to some fellow club-potters and they now 'get' my errant, mirthful approach.
You should get back into it. I hadn't done pottery since high school and after 48 years I went to a studio and took two classes to relearn it. I have been back for a year and have made a lot of things. I made mugs for everyone for Christmas last uear. So 65 mugs in three months going to a studio almost every day. It sure is therapeutic.
Calming to watch. Looking for ways to work with clay, with strength issues to do with different parts of the hand. Love the formation that you have created.
Cyclinders are very important! It is the shape to almost every vessel you'll make in your class! If you have an Instagram, I'd like to see your upcoming work. :) mine is @jamesleasian I also am a potter!
That's how everyone starts. Some days it feels like you can't make anything, and other days it just flows. Even when I have been doing well, there are times I really mess up.
The first piece I was really impressed like dang wat else can this guy do. Then after the plate I started thinking wtf am I watching. Then reading the comments I guess he has finished pieces online n so I figured I'd check em out. "What in the holy asterisk, 3500$ for.. what even is that!?"
I do pottery and his skill level is way up there. He makes it look easy, but that is years and years it took him to get this point. Even with that much time, not many people get to his level. He is an absolute artist.

Michikawa is a fine artist.... I wish the students had more taste, it seemed like they didn’t even understand what he was saying. And then the whispering....
What on earth is this guy doing!! Shoot! That hole in the piece that started as a triangle!!! Insane!! What's that he's using?! A mop's stick 🤣🤣🤣 This is so much fun and creative, just to be clear 😂
I guess i am ignorant. I cannot see what you are all fussing about. I'm certain he is gold standard in his circles. Maybe with some research, i will grow to appreciate this. So many things when done slow and with intensity, are called "art". Just MY opinion.
@@maudlin54 In those days, a significant percentage of art students were people who had problems with basic literacy - art colleges were often an outlet for non-academic talents. An example being Walter Keeler - please see 3:13 of ua-cam.com/video/xIMMoPmaAMY/v-deo.html

Did not fully appreciate until I googled his finished work. Very nice. He understands the forms he creates. Nice process of discovery.

Totally F's with the paradigm of "wheel thrown". Creative genius. TY!

Around 58:00 clearly he doesn't...

Haven't been so inspired in a very long time. Thank you!
Big beautiful hands! Love how he doesn't think about the client and lets the clay do what it will

Straightening the cylinder wall with a flat rib before expanding is essential to spiraling a decoration.

Love it, especially the first one. For me (and respectfully), it seemed to devolve a little from there.

Funny how you can hear mumbling in Swedish in the back ground saying "Chinese" when he's clearly Japanese xD
And only one look from him and the chitchatting stops... :D

Mass delusion, you could take a dump on the wheel and call it art and some people will go along with your crap.
From where to get clay?
Do you have a pottery studio near you or a ceramic supply place?
