Suhr Singlecoil Shootout: V60 vs V60LP "low peak," clean and distorted lead guitar

  • An A/B comparison of the two different versions of the Suhr V60 - the normal wind, and the "low peak" scatterwound, clean and distorted. V60: Clean: 0:02 Distorted: 1:06 V60LP: Clean: 2:15 Distorted: 3:30
    This was through my Mark-V in Ch 1 Fat and Ch 3 Mark-IV, through a Mesa Tremoverb Cab, mic'd up with a SM57 as the primary mic and a MD421 supporting it, through a BAE 1073MP with some mild EQ from a pair of Neve 551s. The guitar in question is a Fender mutt, American Deluxe neck and Standard ash body, both from 2014.
    There's a little bit of light delay on both tracks and about 3db of limiting/makeup gain on the master, but no other effects were used here.

    Thanks for sharing this. The LP version are more mellow and have less top end to my ear. Both sounded good.

      My pleasure! I agree - to me the V60s have a very "hi-fi" sound to the high end, especially through a clean amp, while the LPs roll off a bit of that and sound thicker and throatier, without really being all that much darker. It's still the honeymoon period, but when I first put the V60s in they took some time for me to warm up to them but I never fully gelled, whereas the LPs right off the bat I loved. It's subtle, but at this point we're chasing fairly subtle differences between "pretty good" and "just right" anyway.

      I do too - the LPs are a hair less hi-fi sounding and a little warmer. It's subtle, though.

    Very nice demo. It would be helpful to keep the logo of the current pickup on screen. And if you have a good video editing program, you could 'interleave' the V60 vs V60LP segments. IOW, V60 neck clean, then V60LP neck clean, etc.
    By the time I got to the clean tones for the V60LP, I no longer had the V60 reference in mind, cause the last thing I had heard was the distorted clips for the V60's.
    Anyway, the V60LP set seemed sweeter, balanced, and less aggressive than the V60's.

    I have V60lp on my MIA Standard Strat but they sound so muddy. I soldered them myself. Not sure if I did something wrong. It's been like that for years but hearing yours they sound great!

    • @drewpeterson7
      @drewpeterson7  5 років тому +1

      @@StayHomeEatGreat It might be worth trying 500k pots or some sort of "no load" pot, then, that takes the tone out of the signal path when its on 10. I'm running 250k pots here, but 500s would open up the top end a hair, and would be a way cheaper first step than new pickups, if you're comfortable doing the swap yourself.

      I soldered some sd hot rodded humbuckers in my 93 explorer myself and they sounded muddy, sent the guitar to my guy to redo and he re-soldered them and they sound perfect. Didn’t change any components so a bad or incorrect soldering job from a diy job can make them sound dark. Not sure what I did. But it could be your soldering job for sure.

    Suhr makes great pickups! I've been considering these pickups for my strat! In your demo, is the bridge V60 and V60LP the higher wind at 7.2k?

    • @drewpeterson7
      @drewpeterson7  3 роки тому

      I believe so - it's the bridge specific model, at any rate, I don't know if they offer a "regular" and "hot" bridge option.

    • @DaleBoyle
      @DaleBoyle 3 роки тому

      @@drewpeterson7 Thanks Drew! Those Suhr pickups sound great. I'll be getting a V60LP for my bridge position...either the standard bridge (7.2k) or perhaps I'll try a neck version (6.3k) in the bridge position. I've heard both (in demos) and either option sounds good! I'll likely go with V60s or V63s in the other positions. :)

    Thanks for the clips! How do the V60LP compare against the ML?

    • @drewpeterson7
      @drewpeterson7  5 років тому +2

      I really need to swap pickguards with my maple/alder ML Standard equipped guitar sometime and do a comparison. My unscientific impression is the MLs are a little middier and punchier, while the V60LPs have a little more of that singlecoil scoop thing going on, and are a little more open in the high end. Both are great I haven't decided yet if I have a favorite, and part of the issue here is my two strats are just very different sounding guitars.

    • @jaricklosey4607
      @jaricklosey4607 5 років тому +2

      @@drewpeterson7 Interesting! Listening to your clips, the ML's definitely have a little more mids to them and the V60LP's are definitely more rolled off in the highs than the V60's. I couldn't hear the scoop but that's great to hear your feedback. I've got a Strat in HSS configuration with a Thornbucker bridge and it sounds fantastic there, more like a big fat P90 rather than a hot/muddy humbucker. I want to get some Suhr singles in the neck and middle, but trying to decide between ML and V60LP. Thinking at this point ML's might mate a little better.

    • @drewpeterson7
      @drewpeterson7  5 років тому

      @@jaricklosey4607 I mean, scoop only in a relative sense, and I am running through an awfully midrangey amp, as well. If I had to ballpark it I'd say the MLs are a little more "rock" and the V60LPs are a little more classic Stratocaster, but both have plenty of output and girth to them and I think you'd be happy with either.

    V60 for the " Strattiest "

    • @drewpeterson7
      @drewpeterson7  4 роки тому

      They're definitely the most traditional of the two, but for me the high end was a little bright. I've always been happier on the slightly darker spectrum of the "Strat" sound, rather than the ultra hi-fi, transparent side.

    V60 wins for me

    • @drewpeterson7
      @drewpeterson7  5 років тому +4

      For me the LPs take the edge - the regular set is more open in the high end, but a little TOO hi-fi for me, while the LPs are a little rounder and warmer. I originally bought the regular set though precisely because I was worried the LPs would be too dark, and played them a year before I got around to swapping, so they're clearly still pretty good pickups.
