Grandparents would grow up with 10+ siblings on a farm and they all full sun-up to sun-down alongside their parents, often either not attending school or only through lower education because it was seen as a way to help the family farm. This world is full of darkness. And adulthood amplifies it. And yet, when I see my nephews precious face, giggling at the smallest things, that innocence helps to shine a light back on the world. For me, raising kids is a chance to get some of that innocence back as an adult.

They obviously know technology, but only use them together with us. On the other hand they know the woods here around like the the back of their hands, know the difference ant species and their hills here and can distinguish the bird calls. They ride bicycles and can swim and dive. We just handle it the way WE would like to grow up, no more, no less. And yes, on a long vacation drive they get a tablet to watch sesame street (offline, without ads) or fireman sam (which i dislike, but the other kids in kindergarten watch it, too) when the games and painting gets boring. But it’s the exception. And the best part: we had some rainy days 2 weeks ago, and i asked the little one if she wanted to watch TV and eat an apple. She obviously wanted the apple…but not the TV, and we assembled a (silly) board game from a cereal box instead, and played it. I hope we can keep it this way for a bit longer, and when the inevitable happens and they get un contact with social media, we need to have a talk about it…

The author made stories about her kids and even included pictures of them at the end of each book. Needless to say, the kids who sued won easily and the books are really hard to come by nowadays. Tho I don't really know of any laws that were put in place to stop this happening again.

We went very far in the other direction with our kid. We don't have any social media, and we're very careful about who we share photos with, narrowed down to immediate family. I'll happily show friends photos and videos on my phone IRL, but I don't ever send them electronically without censoring the face with an emoji. This is partly because you can't control distribution once it's on the internet, and because we don't want them going through any sort of face recognition. Once she's 18 she can make her own decisions on this.

Reminds me of what happened to Gary Coleman from Different Strokes in the 80s. He never had a penny from all the years he did the show. He even had cameos on Buck Rogers. He ended his life dirt broke working in a mall as a security and passed away a few years back. And don't forget the girl who was his adopted sister. She died of a drug overdose in a trailer on someones driveway. Kids never made a penny for all the movies and shows they did until lawsuits started happening

I've been talking about this for years. I don't think photos of children should even be allowed on social media. These kids are having their entire lives documented by parents. "They're mine until they're 18" is such a psychotic take. No, dude, children are not slaves, or pets, or household items. You don't own them. They are people, and we decided you can't own people, remember? I mean, the US had a whole war over it and everything.
Kids are people, people have rights, and while you have the responsibility to make sure they make it to 18 healthy and as functional members of society, you as a parent don't have a lot of "rights". Your kids do. There are a lot of limits to what you can do to your kids - you can't kill them, in most civilized countries you can beat them, can't keep them from getting an education, you're not allowed to starve them or force them to take drugs… The list is long.
Kids need protections from abusive parents. Using your kids for social media clout or whatever can absolutely be considered a form of abuse. They are too young to consent.

If a child is in a youtube video for a significant amount of time (except for educational or for short film videos), that video should not be allowed to be monetized, full stop. In fact it should just be a criminal offence to monetize your children on social media (there is nothing legally in place to protect children from being exploited on youtube).

What a coincidence. Yesterday I was disgusted by what I saw about children's exploitation on UA-cam. On my personal account I don't see such things but yesterday I was doing some research on UA-cam to see how thumbnails work, so I was in incognito mode. Man, I saw dozens and dozens of videos with suspicious and borderline clickbait thumbnails with children, some of those videos had hundreds of millions of views.
This should be banned period because unless it's regulated, parents are going to abuse that and the limit between acting (in a movie i.e) and the parents exposing their children's personal life will disappear.

  • @tabiasprime

Couldn't agree more.....the amount of children I see on Instagram being what look's like being "pimped" out by their parents is unbelievable scary and then you look at the comment section...it's terrifying and you begin to fear for a child you don't know and ask are they even safe at home. I have a friend who was recently stalked by a mentally unstable man, who was able to work out where she lived just by the background from videos on tiktok. Its doesn't take much if your seriously committed about stalking someone to find out where they live, if your that way inclined.

As a parent it’s your responsibility to do everything you can to protect your children. Putting them online can be extremely dangerous, you have no idea the intentions of the people you’re posting for. I think the best thing to do is to just keep pictures of your kids and family between your family and friends by text and not putting up photos of them online because why does someone that isn’t important enough to have your phone number needing to see your kids? It’s your free will to parent as your please but why do strangers need to know anything about your family? These “family accounts” , “mommy daughter accounts” whatever you want to call them are playing with fire because they’re posting their family online to make money and get brand deals with the number of followers they accumulate and it’s at the expense of their children’s privacy. Let kids be kids and go have fun and enjoy their childhood, forcing them to talk, dance or do whatever in front of a camera because you want followers and recognition is simply not right. Enjoy the beautiful family that God has blessed you with and don’t do anything to jeopardize it.
