  • My 1973 Camaro Z28 has had no working backup lights since 1982 which is wrong and antisocial! I found a simple and inexpensive solution to the problem, the Hurst backup light switch kit which will work on cars with their 3 or 4 speed manual transmission shifters. In this video I will show you how simple the install is.

I'm just about to install this same switch on my 55 Bel Air. I will be supplying switched power to the back- up light switch, meaning the back-up lights will only be on if the ignition switch is on as well. Otherwise, if the car is parked and in reverse the back-up lights will burn continuously if power to the back-up light switch is not a key-on power source. Thanks for the video!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed your approach to solving the "NO" back up lights problem. For me I am trying to sort out why only 1 of 2 back up lights work on my 2nd generation TA. It's a different issue...and my be a ground or bad socket, nevertheless, I learned something cool today.

OMG, I have the same problem that's been driving me crazy on my 1970 Nova with headers and a muncie 4 speed, this really helps, thanks buddy.

It should be noted to be sure the power to the back up lights is only live when the ignition is in the key on position. Other than doing that you might park your car, shifter in reverse and be in bed asleep< for example>while your backup lights are dragging your battery down.

I own a 1970 Chevelle SS with a 4spd. It is equipped with a reverse lockout .The lockout rod on the steering column was replaced with a piece of allthread when l bought the car. It was bent and didn't work worth a dog so l disconnected it and operate the reverse lights by turning the steering column switch by hand. As long as l remember to turn the switch it works fine.

A friend of mine who owns a 1965 GTO says his reverse lights only operate when the ignition key is in the on position or the vehicle is running. I don't know if this is the case with just some of them or all of them. Good luck! Happy Motoring!

That bolt and jam nut should be on most transmissions. They should be there to stop the shifter from moving farther than needed. 👍

Great video. I have the same issue with a 68 Camaro with headers. The problem I'm having is the bracket bending out of position when pressure is placed on the plunger. The bracket works for a while but then bends to the point it doesn't. I plan on removing the bracket and fabricating a new one out of heavier steel. If it's possible to remove the plunger and replace the spring with a weaker one that may be another option. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Problem corrected with the bracket. I made a duplicate out of 1/8"X 1 1/2" piece of stock aluminum. Cut out a notch so that the 1st gear linkage doesn't hit the bracket. Much improved over what is provided. Note: it is not possible to replace the plunger spring. It's a sealed unit.
