  • Welcome to What Yacht To Do, a Great Loop Documentary. Today, (April 4, 2022) Rev and Sam are moving on their Great Loop Route from Cape Coral, Florida at Cape Harbour Marina to ??? We did not reach our intended destination due to an electrical issue so we took a detour to Legacy Harbor Marina in Fort Myers. After four nights there, we took off again on April 8, 2022) and went to Moore Haven, Florida after going through 2 locks. It was quite a long day.
    We are cruising around America's Great Loop for a second time and selected a 1999 Carver 504 named the Here's To Us!! as our Great Loop boat. So much goes into Great Loop planning and we share every trip with you. Welcome aboard!
    Here are a few resources that we used for the trip: www.whatyachttodo.com/resources/

    We used to always say about boating, "There 's always something!" In this case it's fascinating to see how one something can lead to a lot of somethings (to go wrong). Thanks for explaining it so well. Wonderful ride.

    Lucky you had some smart mechanics and ones that can relay the information to you. Missed the dingy on the back and guessed that you shipped it. Enjoyed the video and you can enjoy the weather, Texas is supposed to hit 100 today.

    What a nice stretch of waterway. So wait, the cooling fins on the alternators drew in airborne oil mist and destroyed the alternators? Wow. I guess you have to expect the unexpected from time to time.

    Too bad you had electrical issues but lucky you were able to get it fixed. Would you recommend getting an old battery charger/inverter inspected by a professional? We bought a 1997 and I was curious about the charger and wondered what the life expectancy is. We are prepping the boat to start the loop possibly spring of next year and last thing we want are electrical issues. Mechanical I am okay at but electrical, I know enough to be dangerous as they say. Happy again for ya'll that the electrical was worked out and your on the way again. Be well and swift current wishes.

    • @WhatYachtToDo
      @WhatYachtToDo  2 роки тому

      Yes, I would definitely get a qualified marine electrician to go through the boat. The electrical parts are critical to the boat's health and your happiness. In our product that went out today on www.GreatLoopAcademy.com (Great Loop Q&A: Living Aboard), I review how our system works with the inverter/charger and generator. It is really important that everyone onboard understands the operation at the circuit breaker panel.

    It can blow at any seam. What can go wrong will go wrong and all those platitudes. Larger boats have a lot of complex systems, sometimes they sit for a while, but they sit in corrosive salt water, and of course a very damp environment. Owning a boat is just like owning the two MGs I had as a youngster. You are just waiting for something to break.

    Question: what engines are on the Here's To Us? Our Carver 444 has TAMD63P-A. We were inspecting our alternators today to ensure we didn't have a similar issue brewing. But our ALTs seem to be at the front of our engine.

    • @WhatYachtToDo

      We have Cummins. We have complete video tours of the boat on our UA-cam channel. There's a playlist there for you to see also tour of the engine room. ua-cam.com/play/PLe4WfPid6GCXPHXWExxealM9tpe_fd0tP.html

    So the cause was that older turbos that were getting close to rebuild were emitting air/exhaust with oil in it? And that oil spread around the engine room, and condensed under the bilge pumps and inside the alternator? And, was it 2 years later the alternators failed because of this? Sounds like leaking turbos are an issue that need more timely attention? Also, could a more ventilated engine room have helped... if there is such a thing?

    • @WhatYachtToDo
      @WhatYachtToDo  2 роки тому

      Yes, you are correct. And besides the blowers, there is a system that takes blow by and recycles it into the crankcase keeping the fumes down. One is Walker AirSep and the other is EnviroVent If I keep the boat, I am going to look at having those installed.

Unfortunately is was in Fort Myers Beach for yearly service during hurricane Ian. We’ll be moving the boat through the Okeechobee waterway next week for repairs. Having never moved the boat through a lock I found this video very helpful! Wish us luck 😅
