    If you don't expect courtesy from other boaters, you won't be disappointed. I guess the charter boats are the worst because they only have one speed - FAST. I was nice you got to spend some time with your mom. Nice place to spend the winter.

      Yes, can never anticipate how others will operate the boat. Defensive boating requires attention and patience!

    Hi Rev and Sam,
    My wife and I are in the middle of watching every one of your videos. We are currently liquidating everything, and plan to buy and move on a boat this spring. Our goal is to learn the boat, outfit, and provision in time to start the Loop in the spring of 2021.
    A couple of easy and quick tips for your followers about the markers..
    First of all, when passing an object (marker, another boat, land, etc), it's considered "leaving" it to port or starboard. For instance, "we'll leave the upcoming green marker on our starboard side". "We'll leave the approaching tug on our port side". This removed a lot of confusion like "do you want me to pass it on our ride side or it's right side??"
    Now, for the markers..If the numbers on the markers are "IN"creasing for your direction of travel, then you are headed "IN", or "returning". So, RED RIGHT RETURN (RRR). Another reminder is RISING-RED-RIGHT-RETURN. Of course, if the numbers are decreasing, then you're on a GREEN RIGHT GO (GRG). It's easy to look at a chart to see what to expect for your upcoming route. Captain Chris was handing out ,what I think, we're tongue depressors with the ends marked red and green at Looper-Palooza. Once you determine if the channel you are about to enter is either a RRR or a GRG, you can place the stick on your helm station in view with the ends corresponding to the rule. No brainer. If someone spells you at the helm, it's easy for them to understand how to navigate in your absence.
    Many times you will think you should be returning, when actually you're going. The sequence of numbers on the markers will always be correct. One of these "gotchas" is while traveling from the North side of Marco Island to the South side (Goodland) on the Marco River. You are on a RRR until pass under the Jolley Bridge, and then it becomes a GRG! I have witnessed boaters, southbound from the bridge, continue to leave the red markers to starboard in this shallow water many times. Always monitor the numbers to make sure they haven't changed.
    The ICW can add to the confusion, but here's an easy way to keep it all straight. Texas to NJ is a GRG. NJ to Texas is a RRR. The ICW can "share" markers with local waterways, so the ICW is marked with little yellow triangles, squares, and rectangles. These yellow indicators supercede the marker colors. Always leave the yellow triangles on the starboard side and always leave the yellow squares on the port side. Regardless of the marker colors. The yellow rectangles simply mark the waterway as part of the ICW, and they do not affect the existing marker colors.
    A good example of this is in the video at 14:25. Sam is rounding the "92 RED", and you can see the yellow triangle at the top of this marker. So, let's apply the rules. (Although they technically left the ICW at the east end of the Miserable Mile and entered the Okeechobee Waterway, the ICW rules still apply). They left "92 RED" to port on the way in (GRG). If they were to turn around and head west towards the gulf (and Texas) they would leave the red marker to starboard (RRR) and the yellow triangle to starboard. (in this particular case, both have the same meaning) Just opposite of the GRG as they did on their original course.
    Even though it would seem they were heading "in", or returning (big water to small water) they were still heading to NJ, so GRG. Once they made the turn at "92 RED", the markers were counting up going into the marina, so they changed from a GRG to a RRR. Once you grasp these simple rules, it will become second nature.
    Some believe the Miserable Mile was named for the strong currents you can encounter within it. You can get knocked out of the channel in a blink of an eye if you're not paying attention. All one needs to do is look at the M Mile on Google satellite (a narrow channel carved into the surrounding skinny water) to know how critical it is to stay in the channel!
    Thanks again for taking the time to post your videos!

      Thanks so much for following us and please keep us in the Loop on your Loop! You will enjoy the downsizing. We need to do more of that! Less Stuff is More Freedom!
      That is a very good read on the markers and you have a great mental reminder scheme going on there. Very valuable to our readers and followers! We loved the Cape Coral area and hope to spend more time next loop.

    Can you tell us about the "shelf" behind you at ~12:30 into the video? I know the fiberglass roof covers the aft salon (the shelf) but it looks like you have a vent and some built in storage. Our Carver 356 only has that flat roof top. Aare all 504 like that or did you or PO install those items... whatever they are? Thanks!

    • @WhatYachtToDo
      @WhatYachtToDo  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bob, That area is not really a shelf, but there is a bit of area to place things. Mainly it houses one of the two Air Conditioner / Heating units. That vent you see is from that. All 500s and 504s that I know of have that up there, so original design. If you search for Tour our Carver 504, we have an entire video tour of the boat. Thanks for watching! Sam

    Nice Vid. Rev, I'm still in the process of convincing my wife to try this. Her biggest question. "What am I supposed to do all day, while you drive the boat?" So what is you're typical day?

    • @WhatYachtToDo
      @WhatYachtToDo  4 роки тому

      That is such a great topic for a video! Thanks! You spend your days doing what you love. Just like on land. I enjoy taking pictures and videos and then editing for our blog and UA-cam channel. Whatever hobbies your wife does on land she could probably do on a boat. Only a small percentage of time is spent underway so most activities include exploring the new port. I hope this helps. There is no typical day. LOL

    Hi,
    I'm wanting to update my navionics on our 1986 boat. What is the unit and software you use. It seems it's all in one on that screen
    Thx Lee

      The unit is a Garmin 7610. I also had the radar upgraded to Garmin, a Garmin Reactor40 Autopilot and 2 Garmin Cameras. It is very user friendly. Cheers, Sam
