  • I tried using Derwent Inktense pencils to create a custom eco bag of Legoshi and Haru from BEASTARS. Can I really use Inktense pencils on fabric? This video is my attempt to find out.

I bought Inktense specifically to use on fabric and like you, I encountered a ton of problems. When I purchased Inktense, my intention was to use them to hand color my textile designs. By the time I applied the colors and scrubbed them to activate the dye, I had hours into my project. There's no way I could have earned a decent income based on the time it took to apply the color and activate it. Like you, the colors ran all over the place when I used water to activate them. I attempted to use Aloe Vera gel instead, but this made the colors streaky and was even more time consuming than using water. After my frustrating attempts, I ironed my project to fix the dye per instructions I got online, then washed it in the machine. The color washed out almost completely. Thumbs down to Inktense on fabric. Thumbs up to your video for exposing the misinformation that permeates the web.

Thank you for your comment! I was worried it might just be me not being able to use it correctly 😆 or the fabric but it definitely isn’t easy to use for that purpose. I’ve been wanting to revenge this video sometime soon and try them on a different type of fabric to see the outcome. I’m still learning a lot but I’m happy that you liked my video! Thank you again for watching 😊

I used inktense blocks to make a paste with water and fabric medium. Used it like paint. Ironed it through a cloth when dry. It didn’t bleed and it survived the washing machine a few times. The colours are beautiful and rich.

Thank you for the advice and thank you for watching my video 😊 I’ve been wanting to try the Inktense products on fabric again soon so I will definitely try this out.

Try aloe gel on fabric rather than water … it stops the ink from bleeding. I’ve done a T-shirt, and a quilt block and it worked well.

You should use aloe vera gel to activate. Not water

I wonder if working on wet and just colouring will leave it vibrant without the bleeding? No brushes.

I found it difficult to color with the pencils on wet fabric since it gives out way too much ink. On paper it can create cool effects but with fabric it’s a lot harder to control. But the ink blocks might work better with this method! I’ve purchased a set and hope to try it out soon 😊

I'm so surprised that Derwent lists fabric as a medium for the pencils! Wouldn't the pigment wash out if placed in a washing machine? 😅 I guess it could be used on stretched canvas though too, that could make sense. Legoshi and Haru turned out super cute, and I like the background colors you picked for them. Great work! 👏😊

The pencils are supposed to be permanent after applying water 😆 as long as you make sure all pigment is activated at least. I was tempted to test that by washing it but I might save it for another video. I was pretty sure the Posca markers would wash out as well :( so didn’t want to risk it. And thank you for the comment! I would love to see a Beastars work from you one day 😊 but am a fan of anything you do to be honest.

The colors are NOT fast when washed, even if you heat set them.
