There was supposedly a Sega Saturn port of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Arena that was cancelled. That’s insane considering the scope and size of that game. I don’t think even help from the 4 meg RAM cart can run that game.
Yeah, makes sense that they would want to port it to the Saturn. I know an N64 version was cancelled as well. The original design document (when it was still called Race 'N' Chase) says it was planned for DOS, Windows, PlayStation, Saturn, and Ultra 64.
Then now GTA 2 is ported on the Dreamcast and it's the First GTA game being ported on the Sega gaming console. GTA 1 would be the first original GTA game ported on Sega console Saturn before the Dreamcast.
Its really a shame that out of the scrapped Scavenger games in development in 1996-97 only Terminus was reworked by another company into another game, in this case Shiny Entertainment with the PC game Messiah. (4:23)
HMS Carnage? A Steampunk game set on Mars? That would have been awesome, there aren't nearly enough games in a steampunk setting out there. A real shame.
Because it was ported to Dreamcast instead, which was even better than a Saturn port would have been. Still would've liked to see a Saturn version though.
Strangely Capcom managed to release Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the Saturn, perhaps this was because Resident Evil sold more on the PlayStation and that 3D games were difficult to port on the Saturn.
Jim Fitton Alpha and RE2 aren't the same thing, Saturn was made for 2D games like Alpha. Its 3D capabilities weren't as easy to develop for compared to Playstation
That shouldn't be a surprise, the Saturn had two cpus and two gpus (That was only 5 MHz slower, which is why most games that use only 1 cpu and gpu were graphically inferior). It was a stupid idea and the PlayStation was far easier to code for
Scud Race was never considered for porting to the Saturn. I’d be interested to see your source for that. It was a tech demo at the Dreamcast unveiling in Japan, but as someone who lived the Saturn era and play to this day, the first talk of Scud Race was for Dreamcast, it was never mentioned for Saturn.
onaretrotip Not on any of the forums, sites, or magazines back then it wasn’t. You admit yourself you never owned a Saturn back in the day, so you most likely weren’t as “in tune” with things back then. And you don’t look as old as me, I’m 41 and got my Saturn went I was 15!
@@onaretrotip yeah dude. So sorry. I thought it was new. Also I feel bad for thinking of constructive criticism when you've already stepped it up. Keep up the good work. I love the canceled games.
There also was a port of Virtua Fighter 3 that was reportedly completed, but was cancelled by Sega just before it came out for duplication, probably to keep the exclusivity for the upcoming Dreamcast. There is no demo or whatsoever in the wild, but there are a few videos of prototypes that can be found of it.
Alien Odyssey from Martin Piper : Alien Odyssey. Yes I was working on the Saturn port alongside porting MAD video compression to the Saturn from the PC. MAD Video (Martin and Dave Video) compression was something a colleague and I had cooked up in out spare time while sharing a flat. It started life on the Archimedes and then ported to the PC at which point we sold the technology to Argument. It produced better visual results than AVC used on Creature Shock. This was in the day when typical home PCs couldn't decode MPEG in realtime so that's why other video compression systems existed in software. Anyway, it was about 50% complete when the plug was pulled. Don't recall why exactly. I was moved onto BRender projects at the time. This was when Argonaut was working with SGI to produce Firewalker which was a games development suite. Now that is a piece of gaming history and a whole story in itself.
Reading through an old interview with Capcom, (around time Sega had just annouced the Dreamcast) and it threw up a few interesting points: 1)Saturn Resident Evil 2 (or Biohazard 2 in Japan), Capcom said it WOULD'NT have been impossible to do, nor would it needed the 4MB Ram cart, as Ram was'nt the issue, 2 key things stopped it happening: The 1st, Sega annoucing the Dreamcast and that they (Sega) were no onger working on Saturn games-Capcom felt that people would stop buying Saturn games as it was seen as being a 'dead' console and also retailers would start clearing shelves of Saturn games, to replace with something else (this also meant Capcom would'nt be converting any more CPS II games to Saturn). The 2nd issue was that Capcom were struggling to get the top performance from the Saturn's CPU, (something they admit Sega's own internal team had managed) and as a result, the CPU speeds they were getting, were too slow to handle the 'graphics calculations' Res Evil 2 needed, as it was on PS1. So, they were'nt going to re-code Res.Evil 2 for Saturn, when Sega had just pulled the plug on it
Good post. The Saturn technically has more memory than the Playstation so the 4 MB cartridge would have honestly been pointless unless they were planning to add more to the Sega port. The Saturn has 2 MB of RAM and 1.5 MB of VRAM and you could find even more space on the 6800x and SCP. The Saturn is slower if you only use one of its CPUs. I imagine Capcom was consulting with Sega on how to get the slave processor to perform some tasks. The original Resident Evil was ported directly to the Saturn without trying to optimize it. It could have definitely been done especially since Capcom had to squeeze the second game into 64 MB of cartridges for Nintendo. I realize the N64 had the fastest processor (around 90 MHZ) but games like Nights and Burning Rangers prove the Saturn can handle complicated code. Burning Rangers had REAL TIME LIGHTING.
Alien Resurrection talk from Argonauts Martin Piper: Martin:A Sega Saturn version of Alien Resurrection was being worked on, as far as I recall no Dreamcast version. The Saturn version failed when the programmer was found to be wasting time by trying to hand code everything as one huge assembly file. It failed to progress beyond a technical demo, not a surprise really
My lord, so many great looking Saturn games that we can never own. I wonder if Sega would still be producing consoles if they had pumped some good Sonic games for the Saturn, potentially the Dreamcast's launch would have been delayed, and who knows, maybe even with better tech due to the delay, could have made it through the generation... hoping is a fine thing,
I'm surprised to hear about a few of these, some seemed pretty cool. I was definitely anticipating Sonic X-Treme and Sonic Championship back in the day, though. I was drunk on Sega kool-aid as a kid, and even during the Saturn years they could still do no wrong... I was holding my breath for a bunch of first-party titles that never materialized (Scud Race was another, along with my hopes of a Dreamcast home version of Daytona 2), and it's even more frustrating to think of "what could have been" all these years later :c
That's awesome. Sadly the Saturn completely passed me by back in the day - I didn't know a single person who had one, so never played on one. I'm making up for it in recent years though!
Nice. Tons of people out there will say the Saturn was only good for imports, but there were still a lot of great games that were released here in the US and in Europe. I'm not a big fan of shmups or fighting games, so I suppose there "shouldn't" be anything I actually enjoy on the system... but my 80+ USA collection says otherwise. I WILL say, if you're just getting into Saturn now, do NOT pay the exorbitant prices some high-profile games are fetching (Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc)... some just aren't worth it unless you're absolutely dedicated. Learn how to do the CDR swap-trick (easier on newer models, tougher on the older ones), flash a gameshark or InterAct memory card with Pseudo-Saturn, install a CDR modchip, or hold out for a Rhea/Phoebe SD card adapter... the Saturn does have a lot of great games, many of which are in the sub-$30 range, but some of the more expensive games aren't worth the price if you don't know whether you like them in advance.
I have a psuedo-flashed AR cart, but I still buy the games despite the high prices. I do shop around a lot though. Some of the shooters are silly though, as I begrudge spending over £100 on a game, so those are perfect for just burning copies. I'm not a huge fan of RPGs on the system as I don't have the time to play them, so it's generally shooters, fighters, and arcade games for me.
I remember Resident Evil 2 was in the works and would utilize Capcoms 4MB RAM cart. Pity it didn’t come out. The Saturn was and still is one of my favorite consoles. With the Capcom VS games and Dark Stalkers Street Fighter Alpha using the 4MB RAM, NeoGeo ports like Metal Slug, KOD, Samurai Spirits all using the 1mb ram, it was fantastic. Also the VCD player was cool too
Speaking of Sonic the Fighters, I have that game on my PlayStation 3. It is an online version of the game where players can fight against online players from everywhere around the world. The online version of Sonic the Fighters is also on Xbox 360.
I know that a lot of original Sonic games developed for the Sega Saturn were cancelled, my only complaint is why they decided to port Sonic 3D Blast to the Saturn instead of Sonic CD? Everyone I know who own a Sega Genesis also wanted to buy a Sega Saturn at the time and had Sonic CD were port to the Saturn, that would had kinda help the Saturn a lot since not many Genesis owners that I know of own a Sega CD and had never play Sonic CD before. As we all know there were a few Sega CD games that either got ported or remake for the Sega Saturn such as Lunar 1 & 2, Snatcher and Corpse Killer, Sonic CD would had been a great addition.
That's a great point. I only knew one person at school back in the day who had a Mega CD (and his parents were rich). A Sonic CD port would have been in high demand if it were to have a Saturn release.
awesome vid. being a big basketball fan I remember being a kid and waiting and waiting and waiting for 96 Dream Team basketball to get released. unfortunately like many saturn games it was cancelled. :(
@Hayden Hyde ...They turned the work they did on VF3 into Fighter's Mega Mix. =P That's why it has some combos from VF3... It also includes characters from Sonic the Fighters. @onaretrotip ...good vid. =P
B. Tokin Which is also why what's her lady from Virtua Cop plays exactly like Aoi from VF 3. Which also reminds me that I actually need to get around to play fighters megamix.
I remebered it was called dsrk sun shattered lands came out originally as a dos game and was to be ported but was cancelled look super cool at the time though
Yeah definitely similarities to Sonic Jam, Leonidas! They actually pitched Major Damage to Sony, but they thought it was too similar to Blasto (and perhaps Agent Armstrong).
Saturn is still one of my favorite and most-played consoles, and too bad these got canceled, I would've enjoyed them back in the 90s... Good compilation too!
I never actually owned (or even saw) a Saturn back in the 90s, but I'm making up for that now. It's definitely one of my most-played consoles this year. Such a great library. Thanks!
I love this video. Resident Evil 2 would not have needed a memory expansion. I realize that was discussed but that's mostly because the Saturn loaded from the disc slightly slower. Even officially the Saturn has 2 MB of RAM and 1.5 MB of VRAM which is 0.5 MB more than the Playstation. And unofficially you can use the sound chip and the SDP for a few more kilobytes of memory. Capcom was just unfamiliar with the architecture. On the first RE port they didn't even try to optimize it for the master-slave CPU. Hell they didn't even change the character models into quads which would have saved memory and allowed more transparency. It really sucks that the Saturn was being abandoned in 97-98 because so many 3D optimization tricks were just being invented.
@@onaretrotipCapcom also stated how frustrated they were with Sega keeping the latest development tools and libraries for themselves, so in-house Saturn titles looked better than third party titles, which didn't make for a great realationship between the 2.
The Saturn was pretty powerful when it came to 2D graphics. I think Sonic Mania would have more or less been able to run on the Saturn. But what I really wonder is, if it would have came out back then would it be highly regarded as it is today or would have been looked at like "just another 2D sonic game" For awhile there nobody cared about 2D games at all.
Enjoyed that just as much as the Dreamcast vid, Pete. My console of choice was and remains the PS1 from that era but i've always had a soft spot for the Saturn.....I guess it's the underdog thing. Scud Race would have been great, real shame that didn't get a home conversion.
Thanks, Alex! Glad you enjoyed them. Yeah, I was all about the PlayStation too, but loving the Saturn in recent years. SCUD Race would've been awesome on either console for sure.
1: Witchwood was indeed most likely cancelled because of Ocean's doubts of its appeal rate, for I can't find any other sources for other reasons. All I did find was that the only game they did release in 2246 RE was X2 for the PS1 (Another Cancelled Saturn Game). However, Ocean only had the rights to publish that in Europe. While Capcom acquired the publishing rights for Japan & Acclaim got the rights for North America (For both versions). However, Acclaim refused to release the game in the region because they withdrew their support for Sega & just thought that the PS1 sales were lucrative & the reviews for the PAL release were absolutely negative, harming Ocean's reputation & Acclaim didn't want to sink with the ship. 4: Rollcage's cancelation is indeed unknown for all 3 systems in mind, but I got my hunches. The Panasonic 3DO console was cancelled in 2246 RE (Suck It Christianity & Islam! How come yes for your calendars, but no for everyone else?) for obvious reasons, which would make it no surprise for the 3DO port to be cancelled. So why didn't the PS1 & Saturn ports make the cut? The Saturn Port was most likely cancelled due to Ocean's disdain for the system or Sega being morons once again. (For Ocean did publish every Team 17 game released in 2246, so it's a fair assessment that it would be them publishing it & in the year 2246 (3DO) & 2247 for PS1 & SS! As for Sega, they're notorious for their mishandling of their marketing strategies in the 90s) Now the PS1 port on the other hand was the closest to being released, but was most likely shot down by Sony for being too boring & uninspired for the 90s had an oversaturation of Racing Games, which was usually hit or miss sales-wise. It's also possible that either Team 17 or Ocean just gave up on the game either out of boredom or due to some setback. 9: Scud Race's Saturn port was cancelled in favor of the Dreamcast in a similar fashion to Shenmue & Sonic Adventure especially since the Saturn was a lost cause by this point (Sorry Saturn but it's true). The Dreamcast port was cancelled simply by Sega's stupidity again for the only conclusion I could forsee is them not seeing value in the Project. At this point, I feel like this trip down memory lane is wearing itself thin. Makes me lose hope in Sega as a Company *cough.... Genesis Mini... cough*. 11: According to a retrospective interview with Yojiro Ogawa circa 2265, Sonic Championship was cancelled for the Saturn for the system couldn't handle the Arcade cabinet's CPU engine & it would have to be watered down drastically (similar to Virtual Fighter 2 on Genesis) just to release it there. They tried this, but they came across various development issues along the way that would cause the project to crash during testing. It also didn't help that only Sega of Japan was willing to move forward with its release, for the port was delayed to July 1997 with an international release during that fall season. 1997 was the same year Sega of North America chose to abandon the Saturn, with Sega of Europe following close behind them. They thought about trying again for the Dreamcast, but decided to wait & see how other Sonic titles & fighting games performed 1st. The green light was later given, but development switched over to the Gamecube & PS2 upon the Dreamcast's discontinuation! That version is a complete converted emulation of the Arcade, while any work done for the newly developed Saturn port was immediately scrapped! As for why only the Gamecube version was released in North America? Simply because of an exclusivity deal Sega had with Nintendo for certain titles in the region, for Nintendo bribed Sega to keep non Nintendo ports of certain Sega games outside of the region. Microsoft did something similar regarding Shenmue 2. The game was later enhanced & re-released for the PS3 & 360 in 2262 with PS3 getting the PS2 port (No Duh!) & 360 getting the Gamecube port. By this point, the exclusivity deal Nintendo had with Sega had expired for the games in question especially since the Classic Wii didn't get the enhanced version in favor of the 360. 12: Fighting Force's Saturn port was indeed completed & Eidos had the rights to release it, but felt burned by Sega & refused to release it to the public. Sega of Europe managed to buy the Publishing rights to the game & tried to release it in November 1997. However, they changed their minds when Sega of North America chose to ditch the Saturn & thought it was a better idea to move forward with the Dreamcast too. Also, it was Core Design's parent company "Eidos" that pushed for the game to be released on PS1 & later N64 & not Core Design themselves. They wanted it multi-platform really badly for money, but like you said... Sega refused & stripped the rights from them. But what you didn't say was that Sega then chose to continue SOR4 for Dreamcast.

From a quote by Simon Butler.. “I worked on Amiga/PC Witchwood at Team 17. It was never going to get off the ground on those platforms so no console versions were planned.”
Did not mentioned Virtua Fighter 3 ( which is been announced on 1997 , but no screenshot or video been released ) and RESIDENT EVIL 2 which is been announced supported by the Capcom Saturn Expansion Cartride ( which is been used only for Capcom vs Marvel ), never released, and screenshot or video neither... 😥 so much suffered behind this console before to take the drastic decision to buy a PsX 😢
Yes, and the lack of screenshot or video is the exact reason they weren't mentioned. I didn't ever even play a Saturn back in the day, let alone own one, so I was very much a PlayStation fan at the time.
onaretrotip to me it was one of the most important games and made me buy a psx in 1998 while i did own a Sega Saturn. Shame but besides that Nice info video buddy.
Shenmue has never been confirmed to be an actual real time demo since the only existing known video of it seems to be taken from a VHS tape based on it's low resolution, artifacts and overall video quality.
There was a painfully huge amount of Saturn games that never made it out. I bought Saturn Fan from the July 1995 issue through to 2002 when it was Dreamcast Fan. I saw many games in those mags that never made it. One of the one's I most wanted back in the day was an awesome looking RPG from DATA EAST called Dragon's Heaven. Damn it looked nice. Like a beefed up SuFami game and kinda Dragon Quest-ish. Last time it was shown, it was 25% complete and then it just disappeared, never to be seen again :(
Yeah, there were loads that I found when researching for this video, and new ones keep popping up in the comments too! Haven't heard of Dragon's Heaven either.
onaretrotip Yeah, I have never been able to find any information about Dragon's Heaven. I wish I still had my Saturn Fan mags. I lost them all along with my MEAN MACHINES (SEGA, Feb 91- Oct 96) and MEGATECH mags. I lost them all in a fire in 2004 ;(
Another gorgeous looking NEC Interchannel game from around the same time as Monster Maker was a Saturn port of Dragon Knight IV. Those MM pics are frim Saturn Fan. ELF also announced a Saturn version of Dragon Knight and Words Worth, but only concept art for Dragon Knight was ever shown in Saturn Fan. Words Worth never even got a feature article. I always thought that the Saturn Dragon Knight became Words Worth but I coukd be wrong.
Somewhere out there, in a parallel universe far from our own (although if there's no existence between universes can it really be distance at all? anyway) early 3D sonic games were comparable and competing with Mario64 and Banjo Kazooie, but with extra speed, modern Sonic's atmosphere and music, with Classic Sonic gameplay
This could be the first time to have Sheumue on the Saturn but has been ported on the Dreamcast. But expect for Sheumue 2 was been cancelled on the Dreamcast due to the problem of the dubbing
I am Japanese. At the time, I was looking forward to the release of Monster Maker, but I remember being very disappointed when it was cancelled. I hope it goes on sale again someday.
Enjoying these Pete. Ofcourse I was looking forward to a Saturn one. Pitty none of these games came to Saturn as they would've looked nice in my collection lol. Didn't Major Damage get a 3DO port? Or am i thinking of something else?
Glad you're enjoying them, Adam. Yeah, some of these would've been worthy entries in the collection. I'm not sure if it did make it to 3DO. If it did I need to play it!

@@onaretrotipI don't think that was ever the case, an interview with one of the team behind the arcade game, in Edge magazine, stated the Saturn was too low a resolution a system to concert it into, they did consider doing a PC conversion though.
What I don't like is that they never re-released the Saturn version of Mega Man 8 which had more stuff than the Psx version and was superior but even Capcom has forgotten about it. It's not on any mega man collection.

what's the song that's playing from 3:13 to 7:18??
Been so long I honestly can't remember I'm afraid.
Yes indeed. Thought it was a bit boring as there wasn't much available on it though. Probably for the best that they left it as a Dreamcast exclusive.
Great video as always mate..
Thanks, Ian!
Great video, loved your Dreamcast one as well.
Thanks mate!
Alien Odyssey from Martin Piper :
Alien Odyssey.
Reading through an old interview with Capcom, (around time Sega had just annouced the Dreamcast) and it threw up a few interesting points:
1)Saturn Resident Evil 2 (or Biohazard 2 in Japan), Capcom said it WOULD'NT have been impossible to do, nor would it needed the 4MB Ram cart, as Ram was'nt the issue, 2 key things stopped it happening:
The 1st, Sega annoucing the Dreamcast and that they (Sega) were no onger working on Saturn games-Capcom felt that people would stop buying Saturn games as it was seen as being a 'dead' console and also retailers would start clearing shelves of Saturn games, to replace with something else (this also meant Capcom would'nt be converting any more CPS II games to Saturn).
Great vid mate keep them coming
Thanks, Gav! I'll do my best.
Great! I love the Saturn, especially Panzer Dragoon Saga.
Me too! Such a great console, Milton.
great stuff Pietro
Thanks, Stu!
Alien Resurrection talk from Argonauts Martin Piper:
Martin:A Sega Saturn version of Alien Resurrection was being worked on, as far as I recall no Dreamcast version.
The Saturn version failed when the programmer was found to be wasting time by trying to hand code everything as one huge assembly file. It failed to progress beyond a technical demo, not a surprise really
Another game we missed out on.
It has to be said that to this day I remain happy that Fighting Force became it's own thing and not a continuation of SOR.
Great work Pete.
Oh, me too. A 3D Streets of Rage would have been shit. Thanks, Rob!
onaretrotip Diehard arcade and Dynamite cop on the DC were developed to be a continuation of the SoR franchise
Oh really? They're great games.
My lord, so many great looking Saturn games that we can never own. I wonder if Sega would still be producing consoles if they had pumped some good Sonic games for the Saturn, potentially the Dreamcast's launch would have been delayed, and who knows, maybe even with better tech due to the delay, could have made it through the generation... hoping is a fine thing,
I often wonder the same, Wayne. Sadly we'l never know.
Also the VCD player was cool too
I never even saw a Saturn back in the day, but in the past ten years it's become one of my favourite consoles.
Speaking of Sonic the Fighters, I have that game on my PlayStation 3. It is an online version of the game where players can fight against online players from everywhere around the world. The online version of Sonic the Fighters is also on Xbox 360.
Oh shit, really? I'll check that out. Thanks!
Also sonic the arcade for the systems 32 should've been released on the saturn alongside sonic cd, knuckles chaotix and 3D blast.
I can't find any info, was Wtichwood actually released on the Amiga? What about the PC version? Any links?
As far as I know it was planned for PC, Amiga, PlayStation, Saturn, and Jaguar, but was cancelled for all.
awesome vid.
being a big basketball fan I remember being a kid and waiting and waiting and waiting for 96 Dream Team basketball to get released. unfortunately like many saturn games it was cancelled. :(
Thanks, Dan! 96 Dream Team were some serious shit. I love my basketball too.
Has a playable demo of Shenmue Saturn leaked online yet?
Not that I'm aware of.
You left out one big one, that being Virtual Fighter 3.
Oh yeah. Do you know why it was cancelled?
Think it was because the Dreamcast was on the horizon.
Yeah, most likely.
@Hayden Hyde ...They turned the work they did on VF3 into Fighter's Mega Mix. =P That's why it has some combos from VF3... It also includes characters from Sonic the Fighters.
@onaretrotip ...good vid. =P
B. Tokin Which is also why what's her lady from Virtua Cop plays exactly like Aoi from VF 3. Which also reminds me that I actually need to get around to play fighters megamix.

Hmm, not sure.
I remebered it was called dsrk sun shattered lands came out originally as a dos game and was to be ported but was cancelled look super cool at the time though
Ah, nice!
What's the music in the beginning?
It's an instrumental of Super Sonic Racing from Sonic R.
What music did you use while talking about the cancelled games?
Oh, I can't remember now I'm afraid, but it would be various Saturn games.
onaretrotip ah I see
Well it’s alright
Is Segata Sanshiro based off Virtua Fighter's Akira?
No, I believe he's loosely based on a character called Sanshiro Sugata, from the film of the same name.
Sonic Saturn engine looks like Sonic Jam's 3D world btw...& Majoe Damage reminds me quite A LOT of Agent Armstrong on the psx!
Yeah definitely similarities to Sonic Jam, Leonidas! They actually pitched Major Damage to Sony, but they thought it was too similar to Blasto (and perhaps Agent Armstrong).
I remember a report in the German "Sega Magazin" back then that a Saturn port of Formula 1 by Psygnosis was nearly finished.
Oh yeah? Wonder why they didn't release it.
A sonic fighting game!!??....wtf
Another belter cheers Pete :)
Haha, yeah, and it actually looks decent. Thanks, Ben!
Thanks!
I heard a long time ago also that Enix wanted to do actraiser 2 on the Saturn but it got cancelled.
Oh yeah? Wasn't aware of that one.
Eternal champions3 was featured on the box of the Saturn but that was all I ever saw about it.
Yeah, wonder what happened there.
I did some research and apparently sega felt threatened that it would be competitive with their game virtua fighter.
Ah, interesting.
@@mattdavis4056 worst mistake soj did.
The incredible Shrinking Character sounds like a good idea for a game. I hope some studio reuses it.
Yeah, reminded me of Honey I Shrunk The Kids haha. Definitely an interesting concept.
Major Damage and Split Realities would have been awesome on Saturn. A shame they didn't get released.
Yeah, it is indeed mate.
Thank you! Yeah, it's a shame that developers found the Saturn's architecture so complicated.
Yeah, I think you're right there. Saturn is so good for 2D fighters and shooters, hence the Japanese library being so much better.
It would be interesting to see, but I believe it wouldn't have the same reception in the 90's. 2D games were nearly shunned in the mid to late 90's.
good idea, great presentation
Thank you very much!
Love the background music Sonic R was a great game >
It was a no-brainer for the background music in this video ;)
I'm so glad shenmue never came out on the sega saturn and went over to the dreamcast as saturn handled 3d games poorly
Agreed. Definitely for the best.
Which of those games have a playable demo???
You can pretty much assume that none of them do, considering it's the Saturn. But I don't remember, so I'm not sure.
Great vid! Where did you get the instrumentals from the Sonic R soundtrack?

Hi Pete, great video, i really enjoyed it. Some of those titles, would have made great games.
That was some great research you done for this. 😀 👍 👍 👍
Thanks, Mike! Yeah some of these look really good.
As for Sega, they're notorious for their mishandling of their marketing strategies in the 90s)
Now the PS1 port on the other hand was the closest to being released, but was most likely shot down by Sony for being too boring & uninspired for the 90s had an oversaturation of Racing Games, which was usually hit or miss sales-wise.
When's your book coming out? 😂

Onaretrotip how can you forgot to mention Resident Evil 2 (Biohazard 2)??? There is even some footage for it for the Saturn version.
There were so many unreleased games, and as it was released on Dreamcast I didn't think it was interesting enough to make the cut.
onaretrotip to me it was one of the most important games and made me buy a psx in 1998 while i did own a Sega Saturn. Shame but besides that Nice info video buddy.

Shenmue has never been confirmed to be an actual real time demo since the only existing known video of it seems to be taken from a VHS tape based on it's low resolution, artifacts and overall video quality.
Oh really? Didn't know that.
I would've loved to have seen a Phantasy Star Game on the Saturn! It would've been the answer to Final Fantasy 7 on PS1!
I think a lot of people wish that had happened, Jeremy!
