Oh my, this absolutely blew my mind when I played it on an emulator a while ago, and I CANNOT believe I missed out on it on the SNES. It's INCREDIBLY dark, moody and dense. Rich detail, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE those rotoscoping animations. It makes the entire thing come alive, without any weird gimmicks.
Oohhh year Another World and Flashback on Amiga 500 ... that brings back some bloody good memories 🤘🏻😁🤘🏻. Great upload from my favourite retro reviewer 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I owned the original Genesis version back in the day. Honestly, I prefer the modern mode shown here. Also it's a shame that they didn't add an option for the Sega CD/3DO cutscenes.
Played this game on so many platforms! PC and Genesis/Megadrive are the best conversions IMO. This game is still on my my all time best game-list. Thanks for doing a video about this game. Thumbs up from Sweden!
Flashback blew my mind as a kid...those months i spent battling through the story are so memorable...the graphics were insane and the challenge was tough...i felt like a king when i finally completed it. I spent sooooo many hours in the weird purple levels throwing my teleporter about...going up and down lifts and not knowing what the fuck to do most of the time..!!
Man this game is my childhood so much nostalgia in this video, thank you for uploading this.I use to race to my local blockbuster and rent this game for weeks at a time just to try to complete it and damn was it friggin hard as hell! I never dis get to finish but got pretty damn close to it! I love your channel please upload more like this. 👍👍😉😃
OMG - thanks so much for this! This hit while I was in Uni - and I spent one of the best ever multi-day no sleep deep dive obsessive play sessions completing it.
I would love to see you do one of these docu style videos on whatever happened to the Atari Lynx (pretty sure game gear played a role). Keep up the great work!
One of my most favorite games ever. On Sega Meg Drive it was like a miracle - was playing it for months and it seemed so complex and long. So sad that fade to black was no way close in any aspect
My dad had this on the sega genesis and he had a bugged copy where the ship would never come and pick you up at the end no matter what he did. I have great memories as a little kid of watching my dad play this.
Just landed on my doormat this morning as I was leaving the house. Can't wait to get home and relive some awesome gaming history. And 100% agree this was an Amiga game through and through!
I've just completed this version (I too got the collectors edition) and I agree with everything you said about the collectors edition. worst then the scanned control pages are the ones with screen shots, they look like a blury mess. Thankfully the game is still great! Just wish it had the option of the Amiga music and sound effects as they were so much better then every other platform.
By the way, Another World (and probably this game too) has incredibly sophisticated game engine not similar to any traditional programming approach for 2D platformers. It allowed the huge amount of animation to be packed in such a small size binary. It's kinda vector graphics combined with bitmap backgrounds. Google it, it's very interesting stuff.
This was such a great game on the Amiga and Megadrive. Maddening but addictive. But this? It doesn't seem necessary nor like it's going to sell well. Who's the target audience supposed to be? I'm glad I've seen your review... I guess I'll stick to retropie. I'm even close to selling my amiga 600 and consoles now as I have no space / too many kids, depending on how you look at it. I checked and you can't sell kids on ebay.
Lassi Kinnunen are there really 10,000 switch owners who also are fans of retro games who also remember this era and maybe also played this exact game and are nostalgic for it and dont already have a way to play it? Because that's really really niche. I sort of hope that the game succeeds, despite its flaws, because of what it represents, I just want there to be enough of an audience to want games like this, you know?
I got it at release as well, 33 euro well spent. Finished it on normal the same day. Good old times. Could not notice the lag you are talking about, it felt exactly like the PC version or SMD version, let's say the game always had typical controls, where you e.g. need to push UP a little bit earlier than the end of the ledge while running for Konrad to make the big jump. I am happy with this edition. Did not realize that the booklet does not fit the metal case. That is just typical... French? C'est la vie. :)
Well after my Amiga days I found one great thing about picking up a Genesis or Snes...to pick up copies of Amiga games such as this cheap...great game...I used to let the Amiga intro scroll over and over. It was simply, yet so well done... cheers.
Hmm not a bad effort. I'm not sure about the intro music at the moment, but it's nice to see that they used the longer intro found on the Acorn Archimedes version
I think I'll stick to the Amiga version for now.. it's a shame they didn't add new levels or such. Maybe the 50th in 2042 will be better.. can't wait! Rewind and the portability is nice, though :)
Honestly, with the Nintendo Switch, it's really the portability that makes it worth it over most other platforms. I know it isn't a VERY portable console but I can't easily whip out a PS4 or the like on the train.
Since you mentioned portability, I'll point out that I played this game frequently on the Sega Nomad, a portable Genesis/Mega Drive system. I still very much prefer the Genesis/Mega Drive port, but the Mega CD version is enhanced with CD music, voiced dialog (which was also in the Amiga and PC versions) and pre-rendered video over the vector animated cutscenes
I appreciate your pointing out that the tin was based on the NA SNES cartridge because it, well, really didn't look much at all like one. Was there a special edition that color, and with that label? I see the vague resemblance to an SNES cart with the ridges on the sides and the layout of the label and the two areas below the label, but still, I would have had no idea if you hadn't mentioned it.
7:10 I prefer the real graphics. >Turns off some needless graphic enchancements... I said the real graphics. >Turns off all the needless graphic enchancements... Perfection!
Got the Original Game 1993 for the Sega Mega Drive. Absolutely Loved It Since the First Minute. A Few Years Ago I downloaded the PC Version, and Now I have the Ps4 25th Anniversary Edition. Feels Like The First Time Again...🥰
Did it still have that cheat where i think if you stood with your back to a wall, ran away from it but turned around straight away, you could walk through the wall? Think this worked on all versions including the Archemedies that i played it on.
That's an awful lot of unneeded packaging, I agree that a floppy like box would have made far more sense :D The release date for the original was only *just* 1992, the first release was nov/december 92 but that does mean regardless at the time of this vid you are still right with 25 (and a bit :D) years :) If it makes you feel any better about the screen, my nomad may as well be turned off in the sun :D
Nostalgia Nerd truly, it isn't half bad. let me rephrase that:"it's not the worst game on the system." never mind, somehow, reading that again, it doesn't sound any better, does it... i'll get me coat.
Confused why they'd include a SNES cart thing in there since ...the SNES was the worst version by a country mile. Between the censorship, constant slowdown/poor performance, missing sounds and music ....it's the worst version to play or reference. Trying to call this a remaster is a sham, slapping filters on it and calling it a day doesn't solve anything. Another World got properly sorted with better visuals through actual touch-ups and it looks great. This ...feels like they took the ol' ROM, threw new audio onto it, some filters and threw it out the door. Why, why is Flashback one of the best step-platformers ever made and yet it gets the WORST treatment by pubs/devs? The remake was crap, the remaster isn't looking great. I love the game, the port isn't looking to be anything less than a massive disappointment.
They could have touched up the visuals regardless, not all of Another World was vector. They managed to make it widescreen and increased the background detail. I'm not just referring to the sprites. I like pixel art, a lot. I'm not asking them to alter that but they could have easily touched it up past the limitations of the hardware from the time. They called this a remastered title and have done nothing to it but add filters you can find on any emulator. I'm not asking them to remake the game, because that was already a disaster but this game didn't get touched up much- at all. They need to give a reason for you to fork over $40+ and there's not anything here to encourage that. The Genesis/MD version looks as good and if the lag he mentioned is accurate? Then this really isn't worth buying at all.
Sonic Mania's Collector's Edition comes with Sonic both standing on a Sega Genesis console that blurts out "SEGA" when you hit the power switch; as a large statue, it comes with a Sega Genesis cartridge that you open to reveal a ring. So, yeah. I don't think that's accurate. Nor would it help this mess of a port at the end of the day.
Honestly, I think re-releases of certain games like this can be pretty pointless. They lose that mystique they once had as software that pushed hardware limits or accomplished graphical or programming feats previously thought impossible on the platforms of the time. At the end of the day, the game we love is still in there but the original feeling of the experience can never be duplicated so slapping on visual filters and other nonsense is really all they can do.
Ahh that intro animation, I was porting the Reminiscence engine (Flashback remake) to the Symbian S60, I don't remember the number of times I've seen this sequence...
Having never played it back in the day, I was gonna pick this up. Think I'll give it a miss now or until a standard release can be picked up cheap enough!
Was tempted by this but forgot about it and so glad I did. Poor effort on the collectors edition. I remember playing it on my friends Amiga back in 92 and being so amazed by the animations and the fact that you could shoot a gun in a game and it looked realistic.
Interesting, I didn't know this was a thing on the Switch. Shame there's no Mega CD soundtrack option here though, that would have been a really nice bonus.
The developers of Flashback have said that they think the Mega Drive version is the best, as that's the system they made the game for, even though it was released on multiple systems and was released for Amiga before Sega's system, as you said.
I played this on Amiga because this was on magazine cover-demo floppys, everyone could see the intro on their screen and you had to get the full version. :D
I think this was one of the first games I played on the Amiga with a SVGA monitor. I loved it back then. I saw the remake advertised on Steam a while back but skipped it. Another platformer I did however go for was the Strider remake, which is decent as long as you set it to the hardest setting and indulge a challenge.
I think barbarian the ultimate warrior was rotoscoped too. I seem to remember reading that they used acetate or something and traced over a paused video of themselves doing each move. Those dodgy filters always give me the impression of a quick way to make a sale rather than putting in a bit of effort. I'm assuming the case being made wrong is a metric to imperial conversion fault. I used to work somewhere where someone kept saying 1 inch is 25mm, luckily it wasn't an engineering job or anything.
I played it on amiga and cant remember getting past the death tower game. Hitting space to draw your gun whilst trying to juggle moves on a 1 button joystick was a pain though. I've got it for the snes here but never tried it.
I just bought the version on the Eshop in the states two days ago. (it's cheaper, plus no physical extras or the soundtrack download). As some who grew up with the Amiga version myself, I find this Switch version quite interesting. I haven't had issue with responsiveness when it comes to the controls (however I also don't use the shoulder buttons at all, keeping to the classic face buttons). What I find fascinating is that this version is like a mixing pot of all version of the game (minus MegaCD/Sega CD and PC CD rom versions). Like it has the extended cutscenes from the floppy DOS version (and the changed Conrad sprite with the red shirt), seems to use MIDI standard for music in "8-bit" sound mode, with one song that sounds ripped from the Amiga. The sound effects in 8-bit don't sound like ANY of the classic version's sound effects. The little trigger lights don't make their iconic "be-beep" noise in either setting for instance. It's like they got them from something other than the dos/amiga/snes/genesis versions of the game since they all (SNES aside) pull from the Amiga's version for sound effects. The new sounds for the most part are nice (I like they added sounds to the cutscenes with this option too) but at least one is... questionable. It's most noticeable on Death Tower, when the elevator stops it sounds like glass got shattered, mind you not all the lifts do this, just the one on Titan with the teleporter on it, and the ones in Death Tower (so far). Odd choice. Overall though I'm having fun replaying this classic. I'd say the Switch version (at the cheaper download version price) is worth it if you're a fan of the game, or still have an original copy lying around. Just my thoughts.
Played the game on the PC back in the days. Never finished it. Didn't realize it has such a cult following to warrant a 25th anniversary re-release on Switch.
'Thicker than a blancmange' haha brilliant !! - You should send it all back and state you want this done properly...after all it is a 'Collectors Edition'
I have the opportunity to pick up two old computers for free, one has a pentium 2, the other has a pentium 4. I'm not really interrested in retro gaming. Is there anything else i can do with them? I know a few things about programming and electronics, so i might be able to make some custom expansion cards to make it do something interresting. Any ideas?
Appears to be a kind of "Fast Cash-In" type of "Anniversary Edition"... The good parts are the ability to turn those filters off and the rewind ability (and well, maybe those new musics). I have to wonder, when they did opt to make tin case and instruction manual, how did they fail them so miserably? Oh well...
They said that they went for the SNES version when making this port. It's hard to imagine that since they controls are reversed from the SNES version. It really sucks that you can't rebind them the way you want. I asked Microids to do that when it came out, but they haven't done it yet.
I remember renting this on SNES and a buddy renting it on the Sega Genesis and racing to see who could beat it first. I won. lol
thanks for showing this - i cant deal with the terrible graphics filter they use in the Modern mode, glad you can disable it.
Yes, the fact you can disable them is at least, a saving grace.
That game is exceptional for the age, but is very tiring.
Tough one to love
I owned the original Genesis version back in the day. Honestly, I prefer the modern mode shown here. Also it's a shame that they didn't add an option for the Sega CD/3DO cutscenes.
From what i could see it "modern" filters do a decent job of emulating the look of an old gaming setup
Snes had better graphics and music than genesis... glad I played it on the snes
Played this game on so many platforms! PC and Genesis/Megadrive are the best conversions IMO. This game is still on my my all time best game-list. Thanks for doing a video about this game. Thumbs up from Sweden!
Cant understand how they never noticed that the manual is 1cm too big to fit in the collectors tin! Shame!
they bought it from chinese.
Oh dear. When publishers mess up a collector's edition. At first I was quite jealous of everyone's photos, but now I'm happy I missed out on this one.
Asobi tech c
@@creepsomber He's just stating the facts moron.
Flashback blew my mind as a kid...those months i spent battling through the story are so memorable...the graphics were insane and the challenge was tough...i felt like a king when i finally completed it. jdgonzo1982 yup same here. I played that game non stop for weeks. I was much younger then. Have great memories with it.
I loved this game when I was in high school. I bought it on Nintendo's eShop for $5.00. So far it's been a great trip down memory lane.
It's 99 cents now
Man this game is my childhood so much nostalgia in this video, thank you for uploading this.I use to race to my local blockbuster and rent this game for weeks at a time just to try to complete it and damn was it friggin hard as hell! OMG - thanks so much for this! This hit while I was in Uni - and I spent one of the best ever multi-day no sleep deep dive obsessive play sessions completing it.
Might be the review I've ever seen, period. Knowledgeable, helpful and in-depth.
Played a lot of this on Amiga way back when.
I still have my Flashback t-shirt that came with a limited Amiga version, man I played this game to death.
What an awesome game this was!
It still is an awesome game!!
Can't wait to see the collectors edition in Ashen's next "Video Game Tat" video.
I managed to get a limited edition knife whose serial number matched my birth year. It made me happy.
My dad had this on the sega genesis and he had a bugged copy where the ship would never come and pick you up at the end no matter what he did. I have great memories as a little kid of watching my dad play this.
Thank you for this comprehensive video. I nearly purchased the collector's edition, but now I'm glad I didn't.
Man, i was excited for this! Now all i want out of the package is that soundtrack.
Just landed on my doormat this morning as I was leaving the house. Can't wait to get home and relive some awesome gaming history. And 100% agree this was an Amiga game through and through!
I remember playing this game! Pre-ordering soon. Since its not out yet here in Michigan.
I'm glad someone else pointed out the manual, I'll stick with my Acorn Archimedes version!
I was looking forward to this. Flashback is one of my favourite games of al time but, as it is, I'll stick to the Megadrive version.
Retro Cabeza 77xc44cvdcc
I’m so glad you made a video on this or I would have missed this game
One of the first games I played on my first "real" PC (486, had a Commodore 64 before that one). Of course I have it preordered as well. Cool vid.
Back then, it had too much lag on the input due to the smooth animation. I never made it to level two 😅
Now I kinda want to see Heart of Darkness getting a new release with that delicious rewind feature.
Thanks for the quality content! It gave me a real flashback...
Out of this world and Flashback was my jam back in the day
Why is there an "8-bit mode"? Shouldn't it be 16-bit?
The amiga uses 8-bit samples.
I used to have that on my Amiga, great game.
LazyRobot
LMAO, you're right. Scalpers can't even get rid of the CE because of how bad it is. Ebay prices are close to Amazon prices right now.
One of my favourites. Even the option screen had awesome music.
Really great review. Very informative. Thanks.
Well I WAS gonna get this.. especially considering my band is covering some of the music right now.. Thanks for saving me the $'s..
I think I'll stick to the Amiga version for now.. it's a shame they didn't add new levels or such. Maybe the 50th in 2042 will be better.. can't wait! Rewind and the portability is nice, though :)

New levels would of been far more welcome that that abomination of a remake and probably cost less to make.
I'll have to see if the standard edition is out over here
Good music. Is the remastered soundtrack available separately?
I appreciate your pointing out that the tin was based on the NA SNES cartridge because it, well, really didn't look much at all like one. Was there a special edition that color, and with that label? I prefer the real graphics.

I said the real graphics.
>Turns off all the needless graphic enchancements...

Got the Original Game 1993 for the Sega Mega Drive. Absolutely Loved It Since the First Minute. A Few Years Ago I downloaded the PC Version, and Now I have the Ps4 25th Anniversary Edition. Feels Like The First Time Again...🥰

Think this worked on all versions including the Archemedies that i played it on.
Rushed you say? After seeing the missing letter in the word "climb" in the top right corner of the control manual i would have to agree.
That's an awful lot of unneeded packaging, I agree that a floppy like box would have made far more sense :D
The release date for the original was only *just* 1992, the first release was nov/december 92 but that does mean regardless at the time of this vid you are still right with 25 (and a bit :D) years :)
If it makes you feel any better about the screen, my nomad may as well be turned off in the sun :D
Sega Cartridge makes even more sense.
have you ever played the CD-i version of Flashback?
Glitter Jugend there's a CD-i version? We need to get Wrestling With Gaming to play it on his next stream
John Rogers
ua-cam.com/video/oKuX18Se5tk/v-deo.html
There's a CD32 version too which has a terrible small size FMV intro. Then after that you get the original intro which looks so much better.
*shudders*
Nostalgia Nerd
truly, it isn't half bad.
let me rephrase that:"it's not the worst game on the system."

The Genesis/MD version looks as good and if the lag he mentioned is accurate? Then this really isn't worth buying at all.
Well, this is the Switch version. I doubt Nintendo wanted another rival's "cartridge" in there.
Sonic Mania's Collector's Edition comes with Sonic both standing on a Sega Genesis console that blurts out "SEGA" when you hit the power switch; as a large statue, it comes with a Sega Genesis cartridge that you open to reveal a ring.

I still have my copy for the PC. Was the first game that made me upgrade a computer (sound card) way back in the day.
Good episode. Pls make more!
This game is such a classic! Love it
Thanks for saving me 30 quid! Might get the standard when it drops in price.
Nerd, what did you think to the Another World game on PS4? I got it from the PSN this month and it seems as good to play as the original to me
This game seems like something I would have loved to play as a kid or young adult. I tried it on my everdrive and it makes me insane.
Ahh that intro animation, I was porting the Reminiscence engine (Flashback remake) to the Symbian S60, I don't remember the number of times I've seen this sequence...
Nice review, thanks!
Love the Gamesmaster reference
Cloud Strife what a show, sorely missed these days..surprised the magazine is still going quite strong, when all others are shutting down..
Did this version fixed the bugs, especially the wall-clipping bug ?
One of the, if not the best cinematic platformer :)
Best unboxing ever. Shows how half-assed the collector's edition materials are. SMH
So is there a running soundtrack like the Sega CD version?
Flashback was, first and foremost, a Sega Mega Drive / Genesis game. Other platforms (yes, even Amiga) were basically ports.
kosmosyche even though it was developed as Mega Drive game it actually came out on the Amiga first which was kind of weird.
The developers of Flashback have said that they think the Mega Drive version is the best, as that's the system they made the game for, even though it was released on multiple systems and was released for Amiga before Sega's system, as you said.
Duplicating discs is faster, cartridges required Sega to approve the game and then produce the carts.
6581punk ahh makes sense 💾
I played this on Amiga because this was on magazine cover-demo floppys, everyone could see the intro on their screen and you had to get the full version. :D
how the hell did he get the copy,it didn't come out yet..till July 31...cool video, can't wait till this drops
I had this on the Sega Genesis, and loved it.
This and bodyblows are the only amiga games I ever played at a friend's house. I couldn't get anywhere on this game, never touched it since.
when he was going through the filters: "I prefer the original flashback" "I said the original flashback" "Perfection"
That fall at 8:48 is hilarious! Must have been so annoying on the original 😂
More recognised than the amiga version!!! Do you have any idea
This game is on sale atm on the eshop for £8.99
I remember buying a Megadrive gamepad to play this on the Amiga using 2 buttons!
Can you review the HD ver for PS3/Xbox?
I think this was one of the first games I played on the Amiga with a SVGA monitor. I loved it back then. I saw the remake advertised on Steam a while back but skipped it. Another platformer I did however go for was the Strider remake, which is decent as long as you set it to the hardest setting and indulge a challenge.
It took me until 6am to complete the last level .. on a school day. It was that day I learnt I could of just glitches through the door
This game's on sale for 1 euro on Switch and Steam. Should I get it?
iv just noticed flashback is missing from my at-games handheld collection, is there a rom for that ?
I played it on amiga and cant remember getting past the death tower game. Hitting space to draw your gun whilst trying to juggle moves on a 1 button joystick was a pain though.
I've got it for the snes here but never tried it.
The Switch doesn´t have antiglare??? Wow, a year past away and i just found out about this.
Thanks mate!!
Looool that USK LOGO worth 5 bucks great job xD
Silly Germans, USK screws up every boxart
I remember being confused to high hell when I played this back in the 90s
Played the game on the PC back in the days. Never finished it. Didn't realize it has such a cult following to warrant a 25th anniversary re-release on Switch.
love it, cheers dude
Oh well...
...Since when was anything about Flashback's original soundtrack "8-bit"?
They said that they went for the SNES version when making this port. It's hard to imagine that since they controls are reversed from the SNES version. It really sucks that you can't rebind them the way you want. I asked Microids to do that when it came out, but they haven't done it yet.
Awesome game, great vibe! but so hard! I never could beat it.
Ah memories! Would love Turrican or Shadow of the Beast and Project X, oh and Zool!
You have savepoints in the game. WTF do you need "rewind" for?
