The landscape of music can always improve or decline-this is entirely possible. Dismissing Tyler’s criticism of modern music trends as “just being an old head” is a lazy perspective. In a world that prioritizes image and likeness over artistic ability, and short-form content over long-form, it’s plausible that this could lead to a degradation in music or any form of creativity and entertainment.

ngl its funny watching most of the white hiphop “fans” (including this channel) misrepresent or avoid what tyler really said about Ian, cause its really not just about Ians sound being generic, its about his gimmick being a suburban white kid doing what is essentially mocking the Atlanta sound that he has zero actual connection to, to sell back to a majority white audience, essentially saying “hey heres the music you love, but now its coming from a guy that looks and lived just as disconnected from the culture that created it as you are”. Thats why he brought up eminem and mac miller as people he thought had respect for the genre, as they were people who embraced the culture as a whole and never presented it as a parody of entirely different regions they have no connection to. He didnt just say his music was a copy of Gucci and Futures, he said that it was weird that he went so hard marketing himself as a suburban white guy with no real connection to the music he was making and I think that makes the suburban white consumers with no connection to the cultures they consume uncomfortable to think about

Tyler is just saying that people often turn heads for an artist that doesn’t make music for the love of it (but rather make it the profit) but not for artists that puts their life into their craft. Most rappers bite who or whatever they see is trending in order to make some quick bucks, and that’s where the problem is.

More rappers need to understand Tyler, the Creator’s style. He may be doing something unconventional, but that’s what makes him one of the greatest rappers/producers to ever hold a mic. Tyler is not only rapping about something meaningful, but abstract. Take Igor, for example. No one has ever done anything like that before. When it came out, people thought it was “strange”. What people failed to see, was that Tyler was trying to stray away from the traditional rap scene where dudes talk about chains and cars. He did something meaningful. He deserved the Grammy that he got.

Drake, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Taylor swift, drake, future, playboi carti, lil uzi, Billie eilish, Sza, Kodak black, summer walker, none of them have a hard time selling tickets or albums. The common denominator?? They give good shows they’re consistent and most importantly they’ve all put out timeless music. The fans aren’t dumb we listen to the “meme” music because it’s what being thrust upon us, but it doesn’t make it past social media fans have options and we spend our money on quality. I gave up on mainstream hip hop a while ago. My problem is with the underground. Since the SC era, artists from the underground were doing things that had never been done, pushing the genre forward. Might not sound like a big deal now, but Yachty sampling Rugrats was insane back in 2015. And no one has been able to carry the torch since Peep, X and Juice - Kid Laroi was the “emo” rapper and he went pop (no surprise, his dad is a corporate executive in the music industry). There was so much stuff going on before the pandemic.
The underground is in a weird spot. We have artists like Carti, Ken Carson, Lone and Yeat pushing rage while artists like Lucki and Kankan are pushing cloud rap forward. But the underground as a whole is just copy and pasting their blueprints. I’m tired of hearing all these rappers on a Ken Carson type beat. Ian and Osamason are so lame for cloning Yeat and Ken respectively.
Idk, that’s my issue at least. With streaming and songs going viral on social media, I think mainstream hip hop is never coming back from being commercial. Too many artists just don’t care about their music being culturally significant anymore or creating music that represents their unique perspective on life. The audience doesn’t care anymore either. “Give me short and digestible content on every relevant topic” you can’t make art if people just want to hear a song that they can clip for TikTok before scrolling up to see whatever else is on their algorithms. Unfortunately, that’s just where the money is now. People aren’t buying albums or going to shows like they used to.

Tyler clearly wasn’t talking about artist who are shocking but artists who lack artistry. Anyone invested in hip hop can see the difference between ice spice and someone like Ian. Even is ice spice isn’t amazing her work ethic and investment in rap is clear, same with Sexyy red and lil nas X and many other rappers who are being attacked due to the misinterpretation of this interview.
