Im a tuba player and I was really inspired by this video. I sent it to my music professor and he liked it very much too. Listening to the instrument I play sounding so beautifully sets my aspirations on fire.
Ben, I'm a bass bone player doubling on tuba...I did study and major on classical bass trombone in music college. You should be able to find a jazz teacher in college, no? Doesn't have to be a tuba player...and listen to a lot of jazz! :)
Jamey Aebersold sends his compliments! I shared your video with him earlier today. The track is from his Volume 22 Play-along! Todd E. Hill, EdD, Director of Jazz Studies, Murray State University, Murray KY
Hey there!!! Idk if u will ever see this comment or answer it but I have to say I couldn´t be more amazed, I love to see different instruments in Jazz (Im a jazz saxophone player for 11 years now) and this is exactly why I started to Learn tuba starting this year. Many thanks for the video! Just a question.... Do you mind telling what microphone u were using to record this?
Hi, I honestly don’t remember, it was a long time ago. These days I really prefer ribbon mics when I record at home, I have a couple and they all work great on low brass!
Your tuba is a beautiful instrument! I've never played one with piston valves in the front, but I played a top valve and rotary valve tuba in the past and I would love to try one. Also your tuning slide trigger is very intriguing. Great playing.
This is brilliant! Did you start out playing jazz or did you have classical training before? I'm going to music college next year to study classical tuba, have you got any tips on starting to play jazz?
Hey I'm a jazz bass trombonist who also plays tuba! I play a lot of BBb sousa, but I was curious on what made you decide on learning F tuba. Did you have classical training and that's just what you had, or were there other factors that made you choose this instrument for what you're doing. This is super super cool!!
I came to the F-tuba via the Cimbasso. It’s also a lot more nimble than the BBb that I played before, and blends better for most things in a modern big band context. I still use a BBb for certain things and have a Sousaphone as well, but my go-to is the F.
You're so awesome for reply on this video. I come back to watch this often you're a huge inspiration to me! Any reason you chose F over an Eb? Also what got you into the cimbasso? Jazz tuba is so so interesting and cool to me!!
@@alexmusicweeks Most cimbassi are in F, and since that was my starting point, it made more sense to get an F-tuba as well. I came to the cimbasso thanks to Franz Monschau, the guy who developed the Haag cimbasso. He graciously lent me one for several months to try out, the one I still play :)
I used to play tuba professionally but some health problems limited my playing ability. I miss it but it's great to hear some great creativity. Keep up the great work and hope to hear a solo album soon.
How does it sound when tuba and baritone sax play unison, and what does it sound if they play octave unisone (baritone sax playing one octave above tuba and E-Bass?) Thanks
In A big band samba composition I am writing I want a theme to be presented in Bass register of the section, which is resembling the rhythm played on surdo drum normally. I thought the baritone would add sharpness to the sound, while e bass and tuba add 'thickness' or bass to it (if you know what I mean? :D) I don't wanna use up the whole sax session because I need them later for counterpart. thanks
+Andreas Hoppe It should work, just don't write too low for the tuba, in the Bigband context I find it can make you loose the punch, especially if you have a lot of rhythmical stuff...
Depends on the sound you want, and the player...but in big bands I'd stay over pedal BBb most of the time if it's rhythmical/moving parts...pops better :)
Hello! First of all! I keep coming back to this great video of yours, can't get enough of it as I am a tuba player myself. Would you mind telling me info on this horn, it's in F right? Which manufacturer? Thanks!
I'm not really sure what that entices, sorry...if anything, listen to great jazz players. When it comes to phrasing in a contemporary big band setting, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band is the goto source, I'd say...and listen to great drummers and bass players!!
+Nik Flores Hey, as it says in the description:Jamey Aebersold Jazz Vol.22 "Favorite Standards". It's a well known jazz standard though, I'm sure there are plenty of places find the music...
I play tuba but mostly marches and slow written out prices. I have an assignment that I have to research a jazz tubist and then find a song they're known for. This is super cool but not what I'm looking for
As a Mexican i wanna apologize to tuba community for abusing this instrument for what breaking bad captions call "drug ballads" i call them "palurdos" google the meaning. Again.

swingin
That's so cool!!!!
Great sound, its good to hear some more tuba music.
That’s amazing! I didn’t figure out how much bass players can learn with your instrument, yet. Thank you for sharing 🥰👏🙏
Awesome! I've never watched a tuba video on YT before. Now you got me - i'm hungry for more :)
Hehe, that's the spirit!!

I play tuba, so I love this so much! YOURE AMAZING!
CandyTheSergal Thank you!!
Dude you rock!...er... that's swingin'! whatever you say to a jazzer. I hope to have such awesome jazz chops at some point
:)

That's correct, if Jamey minds I'll remove the video! Cheers//Mattis
Jamey sent his compliments so I think you’re fine.
You are really a talented musician. Incredible & Awesome solo!

Excellent, is like to hear J.J Johnson on tuba!
One of my favorite tunes. Nice job.
Thank you!

Thank you!
I also found the tuning slide trigger to be very intriguing. Was it a retrofit, or did it come that way from the factory?
Absolutely brilliant!!!
Good stuffs ! !! really like it
When you do, I will influence all that I know to purchase a copy!
So soulful
He doesn't mind at all...he dug it! Great example of what the playa longs were designed to do!
I'm happy to hear that!
Tuba is the best jazz instrument thats why i looked this up.
:)
man you are the next legend after Howard Johnson!!
Haha, hardly, but thank you! :)
Wow. Thanks for posting. Amazing.

Very cool .... this valve 5th ?valve tuning?

Ok thank you.

Muy Bueno!!!
:)
😀💙
grymt lirat!
Tack!!
Very cool but why is there a bass on the backing track?
There’s likely a Music Minus One album sans bass.
Well, the tuba is used as a solo instrument here, not in the bass function…hence!
Great playing and sound!!!! Do you do any touring? I would love to see a live show in the States
Thank you, no tours in the States planned at the moment :)
I work in a Radio Big Band so that keeps me busy!
I used to play tuba professionally but some health problems limited my playing ability. I miss it but it's great to hear some great creativity. Keep up the great work and hope to hear a solo album soon.
Bro, cut a cd of you playing jazz tuba and cimbasso stuff and toss it up on iTunes. I want to buy it.
All in good time :)
💙🎶🌺🌲☺️
How does it sound when tuba and baritone sax play unison, and what does it sound if they play octave unisone (baritone sax playing one octave above tuba and E-Bass?) Thanks
Hard to explain, just different sounds, depending what you are looking for...
In A big band samba composition I am writing I want a theme to be presented in Bass register of the section, which is resembling the rhythm played on surdo drum normally. I thought the baritone would add sharpness to the sound, while e bass and tuba add 'thickness' or bass to it (if you know what I mean? :D) I don't wanna use up the whole sax session because I need them later for counterpart. thanks
+Andreas Hoppe It should work, just don't write too low for the tuba, in the Bigband context I find it can make you loose the punch, especially if you have a lot of rhythmical stuff...
ok, cool, so not being to low… what would you define as low limit on the Tuba? Thank you so much.
Depends on the sound you want, and the player...but in big bands I'd stay over pedal BBb most of the time if it's rhythmical/moving parts...pops better :)
Bro i love it!!! U need to send me the music so i can play this it sounds so awesome!!!
Bohdan Banasky It's a jazz standard, just get a lead sheet!
Hey, dude ! How's you going? Great song, great sound! Which mouthpiece is this? And the tuba?
Thanks, I play a Willson F-tuba, the 3200 FA-5 XS and a custom Giddings and Webster mp, based on their "Churada", a small F-tuba mp...
What model tuba is that? That's a really cool looking tuba if I do say so myself.
It's a WILLSON F Tuba, 3200 FA-5 XS. I think the bell flare looks a bit big on the video due to the angle...
this had 666 likes... whoops, changed it to 667. might as well keep that like so i don't go to hell, haha. oh btw great solo!
667: The neighbour of the beast!
Hello!
First of all! I keep coming back to this great video of yours, can't get enough of it as I am a tuba player myself. Would you mind telling me info on this horn, it's in F right? Which manufacturer? Thanks!
Nevermind! I did a little research on the previous posts, got my answer! Great stuff! Keep it up
+xsandropaesx :) Thank you! I'd say this, though...if I'd buy a new F-Tuba today, I'd go for the Miraphone "Petruschka"!
Wonderful. Please, what tuba do you use?
+Isaac Felipe Calvo Espinoza Thank you. This one is a Willson 3200 FA-5 XS F tuba and I also play a Miraphone 496 Hagen BBb tuba...
Does this book playalong have this song's music in bass clef or did you transpose? Btw, awesome track!
Tom Bubbles I don't think I used the sheet music, but usually the Tebersold books have parts in treble clef in C, Bb and Eb as well as bass clef...
I am a beginner tubist and next year I plan on joining my school's jazz band. Any advice?
I'm not really sure what that entices, sorry...if anything, listen to great jazz players. When it comes to phrasing in a contemporary big band setting, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band is the goto source, I'd say...and listen to great drummers and bass players!!
Is there sheet music for this somewhere?
It’s just a jazz standard…
@@cimbassonista Sorry I don't know a lot about jazz...
@@BerryGodJJ That’s ok, but then I doubt that the lead sheet would help much…
Awesome!
Which tuba are you using?
Thanks!
This one is a Willson F tuba
🤹♀️
I never thought tuba was a jazz instrument
It is if you want it to be :)
Hey where can I find the sheet music for this
+Nik Flores Hey, as it says in the description:Jamey Aebersold Jazz Vol.22 "Favorite Standards". It's a well known jazz standard though, I'm sure there are plenty of places find the music...
Why is it so hard to find jazz solo for tuba on youtube? :)
You just have to make some!
google howard johnson
Where i can get this tuba solo? So great xD
This is just a standard tune, the rest you gotta make up yourself :)
I'm glad you like it, though!
Where can I get the sheet music for this?
Anthony Stinson As it says in the description, it's "Jamey Aebersold Jazz Vol.22, Favorite Standards".
Oh thanks sorry
Anthony Stinson No worries! :)
Was the trigger a custom addition to your tuba?
No, it’s standard on this model...
@@cimbassonista Thanks for the info.
Any tips on improve?
Practise!
sup...ER- do it forever!!!!!
is there sheet music of this? i wanna play too xD
It’s a jazz standard, I’m sure you can find it!
That was so good! I have one question, what is the name of the microphone? Thanks
I don't remember what I used on this one...usually a M-Audio Sputnik...
what kind of tuba is that?
It's a Willsson F-Tuba, 3200 FA-5-XS...
what tuba do you use?
Max Castor It's a Willson F-tuba
thanks
is this a C Tuba?
Nope, it's an F-tuba...
I play tuba but mostly marches and slow written out prices. I have an assignment that I have to research a jazz tubist and then find a song they're known for. This is super cool but not what I'm looking for
