JAZZ TUBA - THE NEARNESS OF YOU

Here's the classic 1938 Hoagy Carmichael tune "The Nearness Of You", in a casual quartet version with my colleagues from the WDR BB rhythm section, Billy test on piano, John Goldsby on bass and Hans Dekker on drums.

So tasteful! Wonderful SMOOTH tone on that tuba! Just played this for our tuba-playing Japanese exchange student, and she loved it! BTW, is that a Royer ribbon mic clamped onto your bell? No effect on bell resonance? Certainly allows you to move without being in the ideal mic position! :-)

Thank you! :) Yes, its a Royer. I really like ribbon mics on low brass! We use them for the whole trombone section!

My jazz instructor told me that I should double another instrument like trombone because jazz tuba isn’t common

Speaking of jazz tubists being rare, do you know of any artists I could listen to for a better idea of what to sound like? I’ve only really seen 2 not including you. I mean sure lots of big bands have tubas, but I want the pure tuba feel in the music so I can really get a good visualization (sonocization?) of what I need to produce to make a “good” tuba sound. Unfortunately, most middle school jazz pieces only really have a trombone part so I can only really do that until we get lucky and have a piece with a tuba part.

@@tdoyr2119 I don’t know that it’s so different…besides Howard Johnson and Bob Stewart, check out Oren Marshall and Sergio Carolino, fantastic players, albeit not straight jazz players. Lots of improv, though…and great sound!
