The creativity on the themes/labels for these store picks is awesome! Love that they are doing something fun with them and not taking themselves too seriously
Probably one of the coolest, most honest store owners you’ll ever come across. “I’m running a business not a charity” made me laugh out loud. Great video!
Hunter... I was at this store on Monday and bought 6 bottles. all are great and I did the $5 deal..Thanks to Chris for taking the time to walk me through the series of those awesome barrel picks keep up the good work Hunter!
That store owner is awesome! Here in NC most of our stores are lousy because they’re state owned and operated and most (with a few exceptions) of the folks working in them could care less if you buy something or not. Plus the selection there is amazing from what I’m used to seeing.
Idaho is the same way..basically Idaho as a state is a “store” so we get store picks which are actually state picks chosen by the state reps and we are very fortunate when we get allocated stuff it’s at or very close to msrp with very little tax (blantons $64 eagle rare 35 buffalo trace 25 pappy 23yr 299) almost everything gets evenly distributed to every store and the manager puts out one of each allocated bottles at their own discretion so you might see a weller full proof 1 time in 2 weeks if they get a case of 6 them for the pappys and btac there is a state lottery any Idaho resident can put in for for free and if you win you buy the bottle that you selected at msrp all btac are $99
Try Hover Crossing Wine and Spirits in Longmont Colorado if you're near there. One of the owners or maybe he's just the whiskey expert knows a lot and doesn't hold back or mark up allocated bottles. They also do whiskey tastings on Fridays between 4 and 6.
Not just a great owner, but a very knowledgeable man, who was generous with his time. Yes, it is a two way streak, but that guy is doing just fine for several reasons. Not really that much of a bourbon drinker, and paying out of state tuition to U of SC for another five and a half years for my daughter, so I am watching what I spend, but I will definitely be checking out some of these liquor stores in South Carolina my next visit,
Here we Go on the Penelope! I’m here to tell you the 9 year will change your mind. Toasted is also Great! Cheers Hunter, everyone has their own palate.
@@Bourbon_Hunter Really Enjoy your Bourbon Hunts! Keep up the Great Work! Been a Sub since the Beginning! Nice to see the success you are having while enjoying what you do!
I miss the days when Fortaleza was just sitting on the shelf at $50 and no one knew what it was. Then a TikTok'er spilled the beans about it in a viral video.
Haha when he asked you if you like MGP… I literally said this is all my guy picks out as his fav’s! Redwood, widow Jane, Remus… but for some reason… even tho everyone likes Penelope… you turn your nose up to the WHOLE line :)
@@Bourbon_Hunter no worries, your secret is safe with me. Really nice store though. And really enjoy hearing what the owner had to say about the industry… lemme thumbs up this real quick!
That’s exactly it. Going to such a place with great store picks! The first two picks shown of the Barrell Rye and the Bulleit are musts. Then with this guys logic you get the bonus hilarious BT bottle. I wish they shipped. The Bulleit bottle is over the top for a gift haha. Another great video!
We go to Folly Beach every year with family. It was after last year's trip that UA-cam started recommending your videos to me. We just planned our trip for this year and I had just started my hunting list! Perfect timing!
This store has a fantastic tequila selection. Lots of good additive free brands. I see El Tesoro, Mijenta, Cimmaron, Volcan de mi tierra, Primo, G4, Cascahuin, Don Fulano, La Grimas, Terralta, Arrete, Siembra Valles, and Tequila Ocho (my favorite brand they don’t make a bad product). All great options!! Love your videos.
As a bourbon guy I'm sure you'd love Artenom 1146, it's gonna run you ~$90. For unaged expressions, Cascahuin next to G4 is great, even the basic 80 proof green label. It's a lowlands tequila like Fortaleza. Underneath the Artenom is Primo 1861 & Lagrimas del Valle. Primo is owned by the guy who makes G4 + his cousin, its a slightly higher proof & fermented in wood tanks which gives it a slight pink lemonade note without additives. Lagrimas is my favorite release of 2023, it's also made at Cascahuin & has this amazing grassy minerality, more complex than anything on the shelf. That said you can't go wrong with mijenta, it makes a nice gift for ~$50 since it comes in a box & has a glass topper. El Tesoro is also really good, along with Tequila Ocho. Both are made by the brother of the guy who makes G4. Huge respect to the owner of 7 star for acknowledging Corazon is adulterated, I had the buffalo trace aged reposado & it was pretty dismal. 100% marketing gimmick
Corazon is made by Casa San Matias distillery, which doesn't use additives. The owner means Tequila Matchmaker hasn't "certified" it as "additive free," but that doesn't mean every brand that doesn't pay to belong to the TMM program & go through its testing uses additives. Corazon does a lot with barrel aging using barrels from Sazerac brands including Blanton's, Buffalo Trace, & Weller (some tequila fans think their aged expressions are too barrel influenced, but that isn't a universally held opinion).
Good additive free tequilas include: ArteNOM, Fortaleza, Tequila Ocho, El Tesoro (they have special editions with Knob Creek & Laphroaig, which is even shown briefly in the video), Siete Leguas, Mijenta, Lagrimas Del Valle, Don Fulano, Cascahuin, Cazcanes, El Tequileno.
As a bourbon & whiskey fan, I bet you'd most like Añejo & Extra Añejo due to the much more pronounced barrel influences & the fact that ex-bourbon barrels are often used. Corazon is a good tequila brand & the distillery, Casa San Matias, doesn't use additives. A lot of Corazon store picks age in Sazerac-owned whisky barrels. Good Añejos & Extra Añejos include those by El Tesoro & Tequila Ocho.
I can vouch for that Old Soul Tintype #2, that stuff is legit. What a great store owner. I will make sure I check him out the next time I am down that way. I honestly want to buy that Rare Character after hearing him tell the story behind it and compare it to the Parker's Heritage Single Malt. Great video, Hunter!
The Penelope hate hurts my heart🥹 15 year was top three for me this year. BUT we all have different palates and at the end of the day it’s an opinion. People get so butt hurt if you don’t like EXACTLY what they like haha. As always great video brother. Cheers 🥃
Great video and great session with that store owner. One thing he pointed out that I'm hearing over and over again from our local store owners in NorCal is how much product these companies make you buy to get allocation. Im some cases, forcing you to buy 18 months of product for 1 allocated bottle. It's unsustainable and I feel bad for these store owners who just want to sell us good bottles at fair prices.
Favorite tequilas Ive tried and have tried alot. Below are additive free and taste amazing highly recommend. 1. El tesoro Anejo (overall favorite) 2. Tequila ocho 3. Don Fulano Repo or Anejo both fantastic
Glad you went by 7 star. They always spend time talking with the customers, it’s not just bc you’re filming. I recently picked up the Buffalo Face but haven’t opened it yet. You just missed out on their OFSB.
Insane to see fortalaza on the shelf like that. We never get it in Georgia. I worked at the biggest store in Augusta and the two years I worked we got 1 silver and 1 anejo. Stopped back in last week and saw the rep who gets it and asked for one and he only laughed said he wished he could get it in.
That Tumbling Dice 7 yr rye on top of the allocation cabinet would have been worth grabbing depending on price. Also was surprised at the amount of old label High West rendezvous rye on the non allocated shelf. Definitely keep a eye out for the 2017 or older bottles. First two digits are the year.
That's why in my collection I only collect single barrel Buffalo Trace because you can either get a good one or the same as all the other ones most of the time you're getting a really good one relaying on people's judgment hopefully lol
Great Store and great owner , He is rite everyone likes what they like, I have had a couple great Buffalo Trace Picks, also I love Penelope Valencia and Love Mixing it with 7up Zero great Flavor....
Great video, you're finding some awesome owners to talk with. Gotta say I've tried 3 or 4 Penelope and they were nothing special. I won't be buying more unless I hear something has changed about them.
That store had great store picks. The way they do the labeling and waxing is pretty unique. What did you think of their allocated stuff? Just ok? I’ve never seen those Old Soul bottles before. Congrats on the selections. I was able to replace my bottle of 1792 12 yr for $69, a New Rif Single Barrel Store pick for $59, and a store pick of Weller Full Proof for $135.
Been to Foley Beach. I’ll deff have to check that store out if I’m back down there. Got pulled over and harassed by North Ashley Police last time so idk.
Yeah the Penelope 9 is a great bottle but some palates are just different. I’ve found I’m not a double oak guy I had the Sagamore DO and the OF 1910 and they were eeh. I do like the MM 46 cask though. Now both opened up as I drank them so would I buy again probably.
