Andrea M I recommend Running Out of Night because it lets the kids learn a lot about history while a intense adventure between two girls and it’s really cool.
Hey!! Kids can read the ocean at the end of the lane? Like I'm 14, and I don't know what I should read, and I don't want it to be romantic or pg rated, but a someone told me that it has a few things and is Def not for children
1. Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery 2. Heidi by Johanna Spyri 3. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll 4. A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 6. Peter Pan by JM Barry 7. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling
Appreciate video content! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you tried - Zanackson Pocket Buster (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a great one off guide for teaching your child how to read without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got excellent success with it.
Honestly disabled is fine. I'm chantel and I'm disabled. Some people are sensitive about it but I think it's fine. It's all about how it's used, like anything. If you're using something to insult someone then obviously it's wrong. But to just describe someone as disabled is absolutely fine :)
I’m kind of the opposite I read little woman and didn’t like it so it drew me to find books I like better ended up with Tom Sawyer and treasure island.
The Secret Garden is one of my absolute favorite stories because of the growth of the protagonist as she has to adapt and finds something to care about. And disabled isn’t bad (honestly, as someone disabled, alternative terms *are* rude).
here are a few more recommendations: (not all are classics) The railway children - E.Nesbit Wonder - R J Palacio All around the world in 80 days - Jules Verne Journey to the centre of the earth - J Verne The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov Goth Girl series - Chris Riddell (for 8 - 10 year olds, but very good) The wizard of oz (dk why it wasn't mentioned in the video)
It's ok! Normally when you are taking about someone who has a disability you put the person first and their disability second. Basically saying their disability isn't who they are and what describes them. So the boy who is autistic (etc). Great video!! Can't wait to read all of these!
Alice in Wonderland is my ALL TIME favorite book, EVER. I decided to start a collection of Alice in Wonderland books and have at least 10 different copies with beautiful covers!! If you decide to get a tattoo PLEASE SHARE! Also, to study Alice for a college class is like a dream. I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THAT IN THE U.S! Ugh, moving to Canada.
Ah I love children's classics, I'm so glad you filmed this! You should definitely read the Emily of New Moon series by L.M. Montgomery, it is so fantastic!!
You should check out Enid Blyton's books, especially the wishing chair books and the enchanted forest. Also Little Women is totally your thing. I also so so adored the Narnia series
You have such beautiful editions of all of these books! I should definitely read more children's classics. I just borrowed the omnibus of The Chronicles of Narnia from the library, so I'm excited to get to that. Today I bought the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, I still love that series so much
I haven't read too many if any children classics, but I am an English Literature Major. I love looking at different symbolisms or ideas that play out and I especially love looking at how women are viewed differently than men like how women are seen as either being the angel or the monster, being the madwoman in the attic, or how women's curiosities are seen as transgressions while men's curiosities are seen as them going on the hero's journey. Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland were never my favorites when I was a child, but your theory/argument intrigues me and I might have to read them now! Thanks to your video, I've just now enrolled myself into a children's literature course which I am quite excited about now! I needed a 5th class and now I have it, thanks! Oh! And I do have a recommendation, although it can be read by children it is something that adults will understand more. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is very powerful and has to do with the child that still lives within all of us and how we need to remember that child and how important it is to remember that each person has a soul.
There is a book that I want to reccomend to everyone! This book touched my heart so much.. Your Voice Is All I Hear.. this book is my all time favorite book. You really shoud read it.
I would recommended the Moomins series by Tove Jansson. It is a very unique story that I wish more people knew about. An even lesser know book would be Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr , but as it is also hard to find I would just say to keep an eye out for it.
To answer your question about disability language... Different people feel differently. Some insist on "person first" language (so "person with a disability"), some prefer to own it as an identity ("disabled person"), some prefer other things... If you ask me, intent is everything and if you're interaction with someone in particular, just using the language that they feel comfortable with, be open to asking and listening... I think just don't be a douche and you're good. lol But I'm not fussy.
In case that wasn't clear, I think that the way you treat someone is always more important than the language you use, but there's certainly nothing wrong with also wanting to "say it 'right'."
I am disabled and i have no problem being called disabled its true it does not define who i am but it is a part of me and it has made me the person I am a strong caring person who sees everyone as they are on the inside
If u want to visit PEI, try later June to Canadian Thanksgiving in Oct. If you want to swim in the ocean, July & Aug. PEI in winter can be challenging. If u end up liking the Anne of GG books u can try the Emily series by the same author. It'll be interesting to see what u think of Narnia when u get to it.
I am in love that you said literary convention rather than trope; it is the correct/accurate term. A trope traditionally has been a comparative literary device, but has changed meaning in the past 8-10 years.
The Barnes and Noble editions are beautiful 😍 I am so mad that they discontinued some, and released some with new covers. Especially since they did it right when I was in the process of collecting the old ones. My OCD (and my wallet) does not appreciate it.
My favorite children's story is The Wind in the Willows (which I think you said is already on your list). I read it when I was little with my mom and now I still read it and love it!
I tried to look through your shelves on goodreads but my phone and the website are not getting along currently so I apologize if my recommendation is already there. You should definitely read The Westing Game of you haven't. Like you, I'm not sure how old a book has to be for it to be considered a classic but to me it is. I read it as an adult but it is older than I am. It is such a wonderful children's mystery/adventure. I always call it clue for children.
I just got so nostalgic because you mentioned Heidi, I read it so many times as a child!! And as for my favourite, it has to be Narnia, I hope you enjoy it when you read it!
The Secret Garden is my favorite book. And I've read a lot of books in my 30-plus years. 😋 I'm glad you enjoyed it, too. You certainly have a great list so far. We'll require an update when you've read the rest of your list!
Books I recommend: Matilda (all ages) James and the Giant peach (6+) Danny the Champion of the World (5+) The Wizard of Oz (6+) Mr. Poppers Penguins (all ages) Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (7+) The BFG (7+) My Side of the Mountain (5+)
I think what you said about the little boy in The Secret Garden being disabled is correct. I'm disabled and although our disabilities are slightly different I think that saying disabled isn't offensive. It just defines how a person is. It's not a negative connotation :).
sakurahan91 Exactly people can be so PC nowdays I have no issue with being referred to as a person with a disability i have a disability i have spina bifida which might be what Colin in the story had but back then it may not have had a name
I've just come across your channel and this post. What a great thing you are doing and your passion comes across so strong. Anything that builds enthusiasm for reading is wonderful ❤❤
I didn't know that the rest of the Anne of Green Gables series wasn't planned, I enjoyed the first one as well but knowing that makes me wary to continue the series...
I need to buy Black Beauty and Pippi Longstocking to complete my collection of Puffin Chalk Classics. I am going to start picking up the Puffin Children's classics, the one in a bunch of colours and the Puffin In Bloom. Although I am only 15 I still want to have a bunch of beautiful children's classics for my future children and I'll teach them not to destroy books.
I didn't know Montgomery didn't want to write the other books - I've only read the first book and love it. Heidi as well. I've never gotten into Alice and Wonderland but your explanation makes sense why I can't LOL! I may give it another try though. Little Princess I saw the movie and book - Secret Garden is my favorite of her books though.
I didn't find it on your goodreads so I'm just gonna recommend this to you: Pippi Longstocking. I just recently read this and really loved it! It causes some serious nostalgia of you've watched the movies as a kid and if not it's still a fantastic read :)
Hailey in Bookland never judge a book by the movie except for JAWS most books that have been made into movies are better than the movie JAWS is the only exception that i know of LOL the book did nothing for me while the movie scars the snickers out of me LOL
In the background there was a book called everything everything is that the book version of the movie because there's a movie called everything everything and it's such a good movie y'all need to see it
Love this video. There is a publishing trend towards projecting the Anglosphere-Classics through newly crafted presentations. I love those ornate books you had, but there is a secret history of children's classics if we dig deeper than what Penguin and Co present to us time and time again. Books such as Michael Ende's Momo and The Night of Wishes. Two of Philip Pullman's favourites: The Owl Service and The Magic Pudding. Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones is an incredible creation that surpasses some its forbearers such as The Wizard of Oz. Others include: A Wizard of Earthsea, War Horse, The Rescuers by Margery Sharp and anything by Ottofried Pruessler. Then there is Finn Family Moomintroll the classic Finnish series vy Tove Jannsen and Eiko Kadono's classic book Kiki's Delivery Service. To name but a few.
Here are some more classics for you. George Macdonald's books, The princess and the Goblin, At the back of the north wind, and books by Ethel Cook Eliot, The Wind boy, and House at the top of the trees
Hi I would just like to let all Anne of green gables fans know that Budge Wilson now wrote Before green gables. ( I highly recommend this book) it talks about her life with all the foster homes and then the orphanage
I'll be studying both Alice in Wonderland and Alice Throught the Looking Glass at University this year, and Peter Pan, Matilda, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone - very excited, as I've only read Harry Potter out of those!
My kids really like the book called “Tony And His Mythical Friends”. They love the illustrations of the mythical characters. Great story as well. I like it because it opened them up to going outdoors!
Just to let you know in the terms of the Secret Garden he would probably use chronically ill but disabled is a perfectly fine word just knowing the context of the secret garden I don’t know if I would use it
I absolutely love Anne of Green Gables! It's my favourite book of all time! I also love Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as well as Peter Pan and I remember watching Heidi when I was younger nearly every time I was at my grandparents, such a great story x
Susan Moody wrote a sequel to The Secret Garden called Misslewaite. It's really good. There's also a sequel to Heidi called Heidi Grows Up but is really hard to find. Have you read Pollyanna and Pollyanna Grows Up. Really good reads
The Secret Garden: Omg I got that book in the 3D grade and I was to small to understand it and I had this really really small copy and I could barely read it because there were so many words on each page and they were like 280-ish pages and there were no pictures and I really didn’t like the book but I recently started reading it and I loved it so thanks for recommending it! 😊 💕 📚 📖
The correct way to identify anyone with a disability is by using person first language as it doesn’t just define the person by their disability. As an occupational therapy student we are taught to never call people “disabled” as this is considered insensitive and rude. So instead of saying “disabled boy” it is better to say the boy with a disability. Not trying to sound rude. Just trying to be informative :)
I really loved this video! I have read most of these books and I'm glad that I finally found a youtuber that loves children classics as much as I do. I would recommend The Six Bullerby Children.
I've been looking for a video like this, so thank you for posting this. I've been looking for children's classics because for the life of me I don't remember reading them when I was a kid.
Omg i read Heidi like years ago and I didn't know the title even though I know what it was about and I'm been DYING to know what the title was so that I could read it again! Thank you so much for letting me re find a seriously amazing book!
im glad people actually read books aimed for younger audiences because not everyone who reads books is old enough for ya books. im in the middle right now, some ya's i can read but others are too much for me to be allowed to read so thanks for making this also i know im literally like 6 yrs late lol i just got out of a really miserable and long reading slump
i was just waiting for you to say the alice books honestly, i actually own two copies of kinda like two in one books of alice's adventures and through the looking glass, definitely my favourite classic. I just love the way Alice thinks and interacts with nonsensical characters. I also liked how you compared it and peter pan because that's actually my best friends favourite classic. (I've been thinking about getting an alice tattoo as well tbh like maybe like a 10/6 hat or a white rose that's painted red but that's kinda to go with the song painting flowers as well haha)
If you like Anne of green gables, you will like Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm. It is REALLY well written and features a likeable but imperfect protagonist👧.
Some really great children's classics are the books by Astrid Lindgren (and I'm not just saying that because I am Swedish... or mabye I do, hard to tell but they are great), my favourites are Mio my son, the brothers Lionheart, Ronia the robbers daughter and Emil of Lönneberga
My top books/series for around middle school ages (you should read them even if you're not in middle school): -The Penderwicks series by Jeanne Birdsall. These books are amazing and you get to know the characters really well. -The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Lee Stewert. I don't care how old you are, read this. -The Wildwood trilogy. I forget who it's by but it's fairly easy to find. -Counting By Sevens by Holly Goldberg Sloan. This book touched my alot and it was my introduction to more emotional stories. It's amazing. -Dreamer Wisher Liar. I don't remember who it's by, but you can probably find it by googling it. This one is more for Elementary school but I think it's really good regardless. -Coraline by Neil Gamon. This one isn't really age specific and it's a little creepy, but it's one of my all time favorite books Inkheart trilogy. Again, idk the author but itd be easy to find. These books are AMAZING.
My absolute favorite children classic (besides Harry Potter) is 'das doppelte Lottchen' by Erich Kästner. I think its called 'Lottie and Lisa' in english. Its such a great great story and so well written! you really should try that out
If you like anne of green gables and the secret garden and Heidi, i strongly recommend Pollyanna. It's such a life changing story. It's so amazing.
i have read that it is great!
I love Pollyanna~
I love the secret garden

Andrea M I recommend Running Out of Night because it lets the kids learn a lot about history while a intense adventure between two girls and it’s really cool.
I read tuck everlasting and watched the movie! It’s awesome.
Tuck Everlasting was actually a read aloud book in 5th grade😂. I was Mae tuck 😂🌚

The Secret Garden is one of my absolute favorite stories because of the growth of the protagonist as she has to adapt and finds something to care about. And disabled isn’t bad (honestly, as someone disabled, alternative terms *are* rude).
The Secret Garden and A Little Princess both made me cry. As.an.adult.😢
Soooo excited this video is up!!!!!!!! You're going to love Black Beauty when you get the chance to read it!

Thanks for these awesome recommendations. Can you do one for 2018 with an updated list for kids of all ages? That would be cool.
please go and read demon dentist by David walliams

There's a book called 'Daddy long legs'
I think you should check it out!

If you love Fantasy I’d Recommend The girl Who drank the Moon
i loved this so much 5/5
Its on my tbr list😀
The Enid blyton books are good for anyone who likes adventures
Have you read misty Gordon and the mystery of the ghost pirates?
It is an amazing book
Thank you for your time and recommendations, I’m looking for age appropriate novels or chapter books for clients and I appreciate these suggestions 😊
When I read Anne of Green Gables, I fell in love right away 😍 Also Alice's Adventures in Wonderland! ❣
Hailey you have to read the book WONDER! It’s such a good book!
There are books like "Rebel Lines" and "Esperanza Rising" that are great for children
The secret garden is my favorite. I love the story
You're choice in books are brilliant! I also love the way you explain the story, in such passion! And Heidi is one of my favourite classics, too! 😁
I recommend reading:
Maximum Ride
By James Patterson
I really loved this video! I have read most of these books and I'm glad that I finally found a youtuber that loves children classics as much as I do. I would recommend The Six Bullerby Children.
I've been looking for a video like this, so thank you for posting this. I've been looking for children's classics because for the life of me I don't remember reading them when I was a kid.
This is the first time I'm watching your channel. You have a great collection of books. I just love your collection of classic editions.
Omg i read Heidi like years ago and I didn't know the title even though I know what it was about and I'm been DYING to know what the title was so that I could read it again! Thank you so much for letting me re find a seriously amazing book!
Books I recommend
Wolf brother series
Kane chronicles series
Flood land
How to train your dragon
im glad people actually read books aimed for younger audiences because not everyone who reads books is old enough for ya books. im in the middle right now, some ya's i can read but others are too much for me to be allowed to read so thanks for making this
also i know im literally like 6 yrs late lol i just got out of a really miserable and long reading slump
Definitely update us when you finish your list i would love to hear your review on other classics!!
i was just waiting for you to say the alice books honestly, i actually own two copies of kinda like two in one books of alice's adventures and through the looking glass, definitely my favourite classic.
You are so sweet. I love Alice too.
If you like Anne of green gables, you will like Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm. It is REALLY well written and features a likeable but imperfect protagonist👧.
Read Narnia and Black Beauty! Both were AMAZING.
the secret garden's cover is to die for
Pipi Longstocking
Freak The Mighty
The Indian In The Cupboard
The Wild Robot
*Are Some Great Reads* try it!
OMG!!!! I want all of those versions!!! They are sooooo beautiful 😍😍😍😍
Some really great children's classics are the books by Astrid Lindgren (and I'm not just saying that because I am Swedish... or mabye I do, hard to tell but they are great), my favourites are Mio my son, the brothers Lionheart, Ronia the robbers daughter and Emil of Lönneberga
The Borrowers by Mary Norton is my favorite. I really just like childrens books anyway.
I've never read Anne of Green Gables, but I do remember watching some episodes on T.V.
can u make a video fo all your books u have
My top books/series for around middle school ages (you should read them even if you're not in middle school):
-The Penderwicks series by Jeanne Birdsall.
This one isn't really age specific and it's a little creepy, but it's one of my all time favorite books
Inkheart trilogy.
