i noticed your comment and i too have been reading all of Lucy Maud Montgomery's works now in my late 30s. If you haven't read them, there are several volumes of her short stories published in the 80s + 90s that are wonderful as well.
I've just discovered your channel and feel I've died and gone to heaven! I too love reading children's books and go back to them from time to time when I need a "cosy" read. I'll contribute Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain as an early favorite, not sure if Tolkien fits in here but I do reread him pretty much every year. Arthur Ransome's We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea is wonderful too. There is such comfort in rereading - I already know where things are going so I can relax and savour the writer's style. Thanks for these lovely videos, I'm a new subscriber :)
I just finished Wind in the Willows for the first time (I'm 57!) and I mentioned ot someone that I don't know why it's a kid's book as the descriptions and esp with Toad's pride and impulsiveness seem so relatable to me as an adult
I'm a huge fan of reading and rereading children's/young adult books and didn't realize so many others enjoyed it as well! Some of my favorites - Betsy Tacy series, Little Men, Understood Betsy, the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, , and oh so many more!
My mom found this book in a library sale years ago (we live in California) andI loved the name Alicia so much we named my first daughter after that character.
I'm catching up on some of your old videos... so enjoyable! Some favorite children's books of mine: Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, The Abandoned by Paul Gallico, the "Jill" books by Ruby Ferguson, the "Five Find-Outers and Dog" books by Enid Blyton. I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone in enjoying a re-visit of my old children's favorites!
Alison Uttley's semi-autobiographical Country Girl written in 1931 is my go-to comfort book. (I have an Audible version which I listen to if I have trouble sleeping.) It is a sensitive and lyrical account of a little girl growing up on a remote Derbyshire farm in the Victorian period. I suppose it might be called children's literature but in its subtle exploration of not only Susan's feelings and experiences, but also those of the adults in her life, the book can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
The Country Child? I discovered this at a very difficult time in my life and I was entranced. I have a lovely old paperback and it is a treasured possession, nice to hear that others still love it too!
Any Rosemary Sutcliff novel is a delight to read, Astrid Lindgren’s Seacrow Island, and Margaret Leighton books. The Phantom Tollbooth is always entertaining. How did I not know about Eva Ibbotson!
I love The Little White Horse, though it’s been ages sinceI read it. Her other books sound great too. My favourite comfort re-reads are Little Women ( and the subsequent books) and the Anne of Green Gables series.
thank you miranda, i really find your videos to be comforting and i love getting these recommendations. i too turn to children's authors i love very often, particularly lm montgomery, and completely agree that the emily trilogy doesn't get enough attention. i've recently discovered enid blyton's adventure series and am really loving it.
As a child I read tons and tons of Enid Blyton. Also liked the William books by Richmal Crompton. Enjoyed a lot of animal stories by Thornton W. Burgess and adored The Wind in the Willows. I have two sisters who were older than me and they had a whole series of very small print books stored away in an old cupboard written maybe in the 50's. These were adventure stories written mainly for girls, but I thoroughly enjoyed them. I wonder if you have heard of these? I think they came out very week and had tiny tiny print. But the stories were wonderful and exciting and a lot of them were about boarding school. I also enjoyed the adventure stories written by Malcolm Saville, but these I think are all out of print now. I have searched for them with no success. I love listening to you and your readings!
Hello Mirinda.. I am so glad to have run into your channel. I have enjoyed a few other videos of yours but this is like an extra special treat because I do love children's books even as I approach my 50s. Enid Blyton is my Goddess but I do love L.M.Montgomery as well and share your deep fondness for the Emily series. You have given me a whole bunch of new books to discover. I look forward to devouring them soon. Do share more such books in further videos. Thanks!
I'm so pleased that you gave the Emily books such a great review. I love them so much! I also love Ballet Shoes, Tom's Midnight Garden and of course Little Women and The Wind in the Willows. I've only just found Robin Stevens (thanks to you) and I'm finding the book 'Mistletoe and Murder' enjoyable. If you're fond of ballet books, have you read Ballet for Laura and Laura's Summer Ballet by Linda Blake? Ballet for Laura is set in London and Laura's Summer Ballet is set at West Bay in Dorset. They are both lovely reads though I have a preference for Ballet for Laura.
Such pretty tulips! I haven't read any children's books by Elizabeth Goudge, only adult ones. What a delight to make such discoveries on your channel! All of these sound like pure delights. You managed to make me completely forget things and transported me into a lovely reading world. Much needed. 🙂
Oh please please do read The Little White Horse (which is still in print) and Linnets & Valerians if you're able! Henrietta's House is another lovely children's book by Elizabeth Goudge. I'm so glad this video provided a little escapism for you! Take care xxx
Great recommendations! Thank you for that video. I personally loved "LIttle Lord Fauntleroy" By Frances Hodgson Burnett and "Little Princess" . I'm currently reading "The Secret garden" and In my TBR is also " The Lost Prince" and I as many books of her's I can get my hands on.
Yes! I LOOOOVE reading children's books as an adult. I remember the Betsy-Tacy books! I have a few of them! Yes, Emily of New Moon is a must as well. I have to say, you get the most beautiful editions for your library. I have never seen this edition of Little Women; it's GORGEOUS! I have added a few of these that I haven't heard of to my birthday wish list for the end of the month. I must admit, I really hate when your videos end as I could listen to you talk about books for hours. I feel like I am sitting with an old friend. Thank you Miranda, this is exactly what we all need right now.
Yay for another Betsy-Tacy and Emily fan! I hope you get lots of lovely books for your birthday. Thank you so much - I’m so glad you enjoy my videos 😊💕
@@MirandaMills I just LOVE special, rare editions of my favorite books. Keep me posted of any you may come across as I enjoy adding them to my library. Thank you again Miranda!
Oh I loved Ballet Shoes!! I read Tennis Shoes last summer which is so fun. Wind in the Willows is so wonderful, yes!!! I should read that again. I read middle grade books often.
Hi I have been binge watching your videos for the last couple of days. I love your book choices although sadly I am a philistine when it comes to poetry. I was compelled to leave a comment and thank you after I watched your Children's Books videos -so many memories but in particular thank you for mentioning The Swish of the Curtain - I had forgotten all about this but I am definitely going to buy a copy and read it and hope it transports me over the decades to when I first read it. Thank you so much xx
Another amazing video! I'm loving your channel so much - I save up episodes to watch when I'm knitting on my shawl. So perfect :D I love so many books on your list (especially Linnets & Valerians by Elizabeth Goudge!) and the rest are on my TBR. The "Morning Gift" looks lovely - I can't wait to read it! Thank you so much for your channel - though my budget is very sad since I keep buying so many more books - lol!
I've read almost all of these and I heartily agree with your recommendations. I've just discovered Eva Ibbotson and have only read A Countess Below Stairs, which I love. Serendipitously, I just ordered Reluctant Heiress and Morning Gift and now I even more can't wait! It's been a while since I've read the Emily books. Miranda, have you read Montgomery's Pat of Silver Bush books or The Blue Castle?
I think Linnets and Valarians, is the most perfect book around, it is a real toss up between that and The Little White Horse. I have read all of Elizabeth Gouge and have several copies of my favourites as they keep falling apart with constant rereading! I shall always cherish these books!
Yayy I'm always so happy to hear some Eva Ibbotson love here on Booktube, because it seems to me like she's forgotten! A Company of Swans is tied with the Morning Gift for me :)
I agree there's not enough Eva Ibbotson love! Her books are so fantastic, and A Company of Swans is certainly a lovely read too. I especially love any book about ballet! xxx
I adore children's literature and living near Colchester with a daughter named Léonie I think we can guess which two books have piqued my interest from your recommendations Miranda, thank you for such an interesting and diverse list, keep well, Teresa 📚
What a lovely video! New subscriber, here! I'm rereading The Wind in the Willows right now fir the first time since childhood. It was referenced in a Korean drama I am watching that is set in a book shop. ❤ Thanks again and take care!
Hello! Thanks so much for subscribing! How great that you're rereading The Wind in the Willows right now. I find it such a relaxing read. Take care! xxx
I did not discover Anne of Green Gables until I was 50 and I adored it. I ended up reading all of LM Montgomery's books

I just found Linnets and Valerians at an estate sale for $1. I really enjoy Elizabeth Goudge also.
Any Rosemary Sutcliff novel is a delight to read, Astrid Lindgren’s Seacrow Island, and Margaret Leighton books. The Phantom Tollbooth is always entertaining. How did I not know about Eva Ibbotson!

I should read Tennis Shoes again! I don't think I've read that one since I was little. Wind in the Willows is such a treat! xxx
A wonderful selection of books, and many of my own favourites here
I would add Rebecca of Sonny Brook Farm. I loved horse books as a child too- Black Beauty and Scarlett Royal and Blue Ribbons for Meg!
I love Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, quaint and old fashioned but delightful. I've read fairly regularly all through my life.
Lovely selection. Many of my favorites but also good recomendations. I just cant cope with sad books at the mo xxx

It's a rabbit ring by Alex Monroe. It's old now, but there's a similar one here: www.alexmonroe.com/running-rabbit-ring
The ending of Tom’s Midnight Garden really disappointed me.
