  • In spite of some cirrus cloud interference this year's Geminid Meteor Shower peak turned better than most years with quite a few meteors being captured on film. This series of sequences was filmed with a tripod-mounted Canon 5D Mk2 and Tokina f/3.5 fisheye lens set to take continuous 10-second exposures from dusk until dawn.
The first sequence features long-trail compositing (using propreitary JCMDI workflows) which allows meteor streaks to remain in the frame for a few seconds so that they really stand out.
Sequence 2 is non-composited and shows the sky more clearly but at the cost making the meteor streaks last only 1/30th of a second, so you really have to pay attention to spot them. About mid-way through this sequence the video roll is paused to zoom-in on one particularly big and bright meteor.
The final sequence is a "no decay" composite in which any sky activity is accumulated into the scene as the sequence progresses. This results in a very "busy" but beautiful scene as stars, aircraft, satellites, and clouds trace their paths across the night sky.
Still images from this and many other JCMDI productions are available as free downloads for personal/non-profit use at the JCMDI website here: jcmdi.com/freephotos/index30.html
The soundtrack is "Dark Harbor (Space Trance Mix)" from the "Mission Control" CD by Technician (yours truly), MP3 album and single track available on iTunes at: itunes.apple.com/us/album/mis... full artist discography and CDs available at HTTP://technician.jcmdi.com

We definitely have a light pollution problem here too, but the brightest ones would have been visible even in the big city. They were much brighter than any of the stars, so if you could any stars at all you'd have seen these as well. The biggest problem is that bright ones are usually few and far between so without the little ones to keep you entertained, a lot of patience would be necessary. =) Thanks for visiting and have a great holiday season and happy new year too!

    What ISO do you use?

The raw frames were shot at ISO 4000 and f/3.5, so they were much lighter than you see here, mostly due to the cirrus clouds scattered city light (Santa Clarita has a 300,000+ population and lots of light pollution). I had dark frame subtraction turned off to avoid long gaps between frames so it's a bit noisy, but some contrast and gamma tweaks helped reduce noise and haziness a bit. Thanks for checking it out! =)
