  • This amazing view of the Earth was captured by the GOES 16 (Geostationary Satellite) east imager and shows most of the western hemisphere in remarkable detail. Since night time on Earth is much less visible (to the human eye) from space without the sun's illumination, the night view is composited using two infrared bands (7 and 13) to show atmospheric water and ice (in clouds), along with a static ground map of city lights to yeild more-or-less consistent view from day to night.
These 800+ images (courtesy of the NOAA GOES image server) were captured over a 10-day period at 15-minute intervals, then built into the timelapse you see here.
The soundtrack is "Newton's Prizm" from the "TimeShift" CD by Technician (yours truly), album and single track available on iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/album/tim... full artist discography and CDs available at HTTP://technician.jcmdi.com

Is science the new art? Facts and data now provide "meaning" in our lives too.

Funny how even basic nature - including science-type stuff like this, is already more interesting and artistic than anything I could ever come up with. The physics and data are all part of it too, at least from my perspective. =) Thanks a bunch for visiting and commenting!

Great job. That is so beautiful and amazing. I love seeing the shine of the sun on the oceans so you can tell when it is directly over head. I have an app on my android phone called Terra Time which shows where the sun is, the moon and shadow of day and night light this. I love checking it everyday. It tells me the time of sun rise and sun set as well as how much longer the next day will be. I love stuff like this. Great music as always.

That app sounds interesting - I'll have to check it out. I noticed the sun's reflection too, and another shadow (a dark blob type of thing) which traverses the night side from left to right just above Antarctica. It 's probably just a processing artifact of some sort, as I can't think of anything which should be casting a shadow on the night side of Earth. Anyway, thanks so much for the visit and nice comment! =)

I've been on the road a lot lately and unfortunately missed the eclipse due to clouds and lack of proper equipment =( ... I've tried to film whatever interesting things I ran across but opportunities were scarce and I'm just now starting to process what I gathered. There will be more stuff coming as I get caught up. Thanks for watching and thinking of me!

Sagenhaft, wie kommst Du zu solchen Aufnahmen?

These images come from a public NOAA website where you can see and download the latest processed image from the satellite. The hardest part is collecting the latest image every 15 minutes. I use scripts and a dedicated computer to grab images 24/7. Once I have a bunch of images, I can make them into a time lapse sequence and then finally into the movie you see here. It takes a lot of time and patience to set it all up and keep it running, but I think the effort is worth the result =) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
