      BringBackEternity you’re actually correct. Katherine was German in the books, but Nina doesn’t exactly look very Anglo-Saxon, and when they learned she was fluent in Bulgarian (I think one of the writers or somebody overheard her talking to her mom on the phone in Bulgarian) they changed the character to be Bulgarian.

      @@AB-yk2pq Well, she speaks Bulgarian with her family, but the slang is something that is specific to groups of people as a kind of informal in-group communication. Slang is often specific to the region. Since she never lived in Bulgaria, she would not have heard some those expressions.
      Also since Serbian and Bulgarian(especially the dialects that are spoken in Sofia and the western part of the country), are particularly close, it's not surprising if a Serbian person understands it better.

      Unlike slang in English, which is often looked down upon, Bulgarian slang is so normalised in all walks of life that you can't really see words and phrases without the slang unless you're in an oddly sterilised environment. This of course is only valid if you've spent a good amount of time here.

    • @jaysotho
      @jaysotho 6 років тому +2

      George Mirchev English slang isn’t looked down upon? At least not anywhere I’ve lived. Just because it’s your first language for about two years, then moving to Canada doesn’t mean she is constantly using a Bulgarian accent. In Canada i’m guessing she only talked Bulgarian to them and no one else.
      My uncle for example was born in England but moved to Japan at the age of 11 and has lived there every since. He still has an English accent.
      My Dad who was also born in the UK, has lived in the States for 30 years and still has an accent. Mother born in New Zealand, lived in states for 30 years and accent is stronger than ever.
      My brother on the other hand was born in England and moved here at the age of 5, his accent almost fully American but can be slightly British.
      It's hard to say. It depends on how young you are into speech development.

    • @SkateSka
      @SkateSka 6 років тому +2

      I've noticed plenty of stiffs in England who would look down on slang and judge over it, mostly wannabe posh country folk. I'm back in Bulgaria after three years and the attitude everywhere is so different. The way language works in a country is a strong indicator of it's people's character.
      I never said a word about an accent.

      @@rupiter2008 , това е така, защото преди години е имало три държави България и в момента Украйна, Крим и Южна Русия се намират на територията на някогашната Велика България (Magna Bulgaria). Това е и причината Монголия, Украйна, Русия, Румъния, Хърватия, Босна, Сърбия, Македония и други държави да приемат двете разновидности на българската азбука (познати като Глаголица и Кирилица), с някои добавени от тях промени. Има много общи думи между българския и руския език, тъй като двете днешни държави в миналото са споделяли общи земи. :) Основната разлика между българската азбука и руската са, че при руската биват премахнати малките букви, каквито има в българската азбука, и там малките букви са всъщност смалени варианти на главните букви. При българската азбука повечето главни букви имат обособени малки букви. Румънците спират да използват кирилицата в края на 70-те години и преминават на латиница, но в румънската църква и до днес се използва кирилица и се пее на старобългарски език.
