I used to live in Charlotte and go there to visit from time to time. What I have found in Charlotte is that the middle class seem to be being squeezed out of existence. If I had a lot of money, Charlotte would be nice. If I had a middle class or below budget, I would look elsewhere.

As someone from Raleigh (Cary/Apex) who has lived in the greater Charlotte are for the past 5 years, I MUCH prefer the overall feel of Raleigh. Charlotte definitely has its perks, like more public transportation, the bigger city feel, and being closer to the mountains, but the different neighborhoods and parts of the city feel VERY separated, whereas in Raleigh you flow from one neighborhood to the next with relative ease. Raleigh, in my opinion, has a lot more to do in its downtown (museums, shops, food) whereas in Charlotte, the downtown (uptown) is primarily banks and high-rise apartments. Raleigh also has a lot more universities than Charlotte does, which creates for a better public school system. Overall both cities are great in their own ways and different people like both cities for different reasons. Raleigh is very much home to me, so I am definitely a little biased.

Mecklenburg County residents have paid high property taxes for years so that Raleigh could have nice roads. I have no interest in living in any city, but I prefer the Piedmont with rolling hills and the country outside the CLT area. Since CLT became a Democrat run city, taxes and crime have just increased badly. But that’s what happens.

Charlotte was pretty easy to get around. Living in Texas, I would definitely compare Raleigh/Charlotte to Austin/Dallas. Charlotte is like a much smaller Dallas as far as the feel goes. Raleigh is definitely comparable to Austin. Both are great, but pretty different dynamics.

I've lived in both and I can say both are great places to live. When i live in Raleigh, the trails around Lake Wheeler were in my back yard which was great and the city as a whole was younger. As some one that's grown up in the Charlotte area the city used to be more affordable however if you have a great job there is no shortage of things to do or places to go. In the last several years our breweries vineyards and even cidery have exploded.

@@rileyfarrell1966 I’m a college student IN North Carolina and tbh I feel like Oregon sounds way cooler in terms of the young scene. Depends on what you care about but there’s nothing really special about NC. I like it because the weather is great and it’s warm, but it’s really not all that great compared to some cool beachy area in Florida or something like that. Or Austin texas idk. Totally depends on what you value but the bigger cities in NC are just starting to really take off, so it’s a lot of suburban sprawl and there’s not nearly as much cool stuff to do compared to say, Portland or Seattle or something. The weather in NC is better but what are you actually looking for

I've lived in Raleigh and Durham, my brother attended UNC in Chapel Hill and they are NOT one big city. There is a very distinct separation in the drive/distance between each city/town. I just moved here from central NJ - greater Princeton area. Why? A one bedroom in Plainsboro is now $2000 per month. Hillsborough is 2500 in a new development. Visit before you come and stay a while. So far I really dislike Charlotte and not just for the gargantuan roaches who visit my kitchen. Guaranteed culture shock dear Jersey girl - be warned While Jersey roads are bad at least there are shoulders. Very few in NC, and they are only two lanes each way. Think Route 130 with no shoulders or a perpetual Rte 206.
Charlotte and surrounding suburbs need a lot more traffic lights and getting out of your development is hairy-scary with the unending noisy traffic. Seven weeks to get a DMV license appointment and then you have to go elsewhere to get title, registration and plates (3 hour ordeal). The tax the property value of your car. You are used to private liquor stores but beware NC has ABC State stores that sell hard liquor only - no mixers. For wine you need to go to a distributor like a grocery store. With limited selections. Don't be shocked to see signs for 'gun raffle next week'. Dogs are routinely left outside and this is not thought to be abnormal. The population is clueless as to the noise pollution and too passive to complain. Leaf blowing 7 days a week at 95 decibels is common. I work from home and have 5 hours of noise a day. The state tax is only about 3% less than New Jersey so there will not be a big increase like if you moved to Florida.
Corporate landlords (Progress Residential, American Homes for Rent) have outbid all the locals on the affordable, pretty homes in places like Mint Hill NC. So there is an excellent chance your landlord will be a Private Equity firm located somewhere else. Read up on the reviews for Progress Residential and others to see what you are in for and it's not pretty. Rents are going sky high, not as bad as NJ but the price of housing is unaffordable in safe areas. These private equity firms use the income from the rental homes to pay interest on the bonds. The cash from the bond sale is then used to buy more homes. Read up on Wall Street landlords who have a 1 billion dollar kitty to outbid you and increase their portofolio of 70,000 homes as an asset class. Hence, the doubling of prices.
If you are looking for roadside farmers stands, greenhouses and places like Tony's Flower Farm they are not here. I finally realized why NJ was called the Garden State. The clay soil (as least in Mint Hill) seems to have stopped any attempt at gardening. I'm ready to move to Raleigh just for the Wegman's....Finding native Charlotte locals - they are MIA amidst all the 'transplants' (that's what they call us) from NY, NJ, Ohio, CT, Florida returnees. First day here someone was buying Matzoh in Harris Teeter for the Jewish High Holy Days.

And yet Raleigh is consistently ranked higher than Charlotte on the "best places to live in the U.S." lists for the past several years. I grew up in Salisbury near Charlotte, but have lived in the Raleigh area for the last 10 years. Both areas are great. Sure, maybe Charlotte is "ahead" in having a light rail system, which I actually view as a negative because I have zero interest in riding on public transportation. What "fields" are you referring to? For me, the better thing about the Raleigh area is the much better college sports scene and "college town vibe" (energy from young people, etc) from the 3 major colleges in the area.

I would choose Charlotte over Raleigh/Durham, as a city and as a metro area. I have been ranking American metro areas, small towns, and retirement areas for 36 years. I am VERY familiar with both the Charlotte, NC (SC) metro area and the Raleigh/Durham metro areas. Both are excellent metro areas in which to live and rank in the top 25% of metro areas in my 2020 rankings. Raleigh/Durham is better in college availability (#1 in the nation when taking population into consideration) and, (though Charlotte does well in healthcare) RDU does better in the number of healthcare options. These are really the only clear advantages than Raleigh/Durham have. Both metro areas have great outdoor recreational assets, friendly residents, strong economies, great 4-season climates, Clean/green/flora, and have good Buying Power (cost of living vs. income). After that, Charlotte has the advantage. Though both metro areas are still affordable, Charlotte has a marked advantage. Charlotte's Buying Power is 12.41% better than the national average and Raleigh/Durham's is 1.36% worse than the national average. Raleigh'Durham's rate if increase is growing faster, so that's not good for them looking into the future. Charlotte's transportation is better overall. Raleigh/Durham has a better freeway network (not unusual for a state capital). But Charlotte's airport is far more superior and they have a light rail network and downtown trolley system that are impressive. Where Charlotte has a huge advantage is unique recreational assets (ie recreational assets that most metro areas do not have). Every metro area in the nation (240 of them) has parks, greenways, some form of lakes/rivers, museums. etc. to varying degrees. The only truly unique recreational assets that Raleigh/Durham has is an NHL Hockey team. Charlotte has NFL/NBA/MLS/NASCAR, a major theme park, two major water parks, and the U.S. National Whtewater Center (the only one of its kind and size in the World). Raleigh/Durham just can't come close to Charlotte in terms of unique recreational assets. Though I do like and respect both areas, my choice is clearly Charlotte. It just offers me more at a lower cost.

As far as "unique recreational assets" and the sports scene, I think both are great and actually about equal, considering that the college sports scene in the Raleigh area is so much better. I don't know the stats on this, but I bet that college sports are more followed than pro sorts in the United States. And for me personally, I care WAY more about college sports, and actually don't follow pro sports at all. As an NC State fan living in the Raleigh area, I can travel to dozens of college sporting events almost year round, with the bonus that many NC State games also take place in nearby Chapel Hill and at Duke. And I'm not just talking about football and basketball, but a wide range of sports (more than just "the big 4" or 5 pro sports) -- but the ability to see dozens of high level college matches in tennis, wrestling, volleyball, soccer, etc. And in any given year, you are likely to have the ACC Championships in several sports hosted at a site in the Raleigh Area. The ACC tennis championships have been and will be in Cary for the last few years, and the ACC wrestling championships were at NC State last year and will be at UNC this year, for example.

Id highly doubt buying power is greater in charlotte. That’s just cost of living without considering income. The cost of living index in charlotte-concord NC metro according to bestplaces is 98.8, Raleigh-cary metro is 101.2, But according to the St.Louis Federal Bank, the per capita income in charlotte is 62,056 as of 2021 while raleigh is 66,428 dollars as of 2021, so raleigh is only 2.4% more expensive but you earn 7% more money, so I’d say the buying power is 4.5% greater in the Raleigh-cary Metropolitan area. Raleigh is way better for families i’d say while charlotte is better for single adults, however I think most single adults in the south would be in atlanta.

    • @aimxdy8680
      @aimxdy8680 6 місяців тому

Even when considering median household income, according to Data USA the median household income for the Charlotte-Concord metro is 69,559 USD as of 2021 while Raleigh-cary metro was 83,581 USD, Median household income is 20.1% more in raleigh metro while cost of living is only 2.4% more when including HOUSING. So for median household income buying power is 17.3% more in raleigh
However if you’re concerned about buying power, the midwest is the best for that, Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Omaha NE, Minneapolis I think have the highest buying power in the country.

I attended Davidson College on the north side of town, which is a very prestigious college in terms of academics ranked with Duke and Wake Forest it’s sporting prowess definitely isn’t as well known but that wasn’t important to me. Raleigh is a very nice area too and I feel parts of it probably have better value over Charlotte. Last few years I’ve noticed newcomers have really driven locals out of the market. Originally as a child I was born in Sydney, Australia where the median house price today is over $1.3 million so anywhere in NC seems like pocket change from that point of view 😂

Charlotte has the support of all the major national banks and other headquartered companies to make the city bigger and better with amenities. If Charlotte wants something, the city makes it happen. Light rail, downtown arena, sports teams (NFL, NBA, MLS in 2022, AAA Baseball downtown), museums, etc. The video mentions Carowinds, which is great to have near Charlotte. also all the major players in RTP as those companies invest in the city to accomodate the work force.
Charlotte suburbs dont connect tohe city like it should and too many bad areas in Charlotte. Ive been hanging out at South End and is growing fast but the energy from colleges is missing. Charlotte just seems to be missing something; coming from Atlanta and a former NY I just enjoyed Raleigh.

I have lived in Raleigh, Atlanta and now Charlotte. If you are a college student or around that age bracket, I agree, Raleigh hands down. I LOVED Raleigh when I was in college and through my mid 20s. But for the professional millennial and active middle ager (and slightly older), Raleigh leaves much to be desired. Charlotte is not Atlanta, BUT it has a 'big city' feel and offerings, including a dense/thriving down (up) town, the NoDa (art district), and Southend areas; each hosting endless restaurants, art, diverse culture and nightlife, on every block. There are three PROfessional league teams (NBA, NFL, FC), in center city. Charlotte has a more advance and growing transit system, including Light Rail, Streetcar, Bus, and Bus Rapid Transit. The Charlotte Douglas International airport is the sixth busiest airport in the United States, and a hub for American Airlines. When it comes to shopping, Charlotte's South Park Mall (one of three malls in the city) hosts luxury stores such as Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, David Yurman, Tiffany & Co, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, etc. And then there's Concord Mills Mall, which hosts COACH, MK, etc. is NC's largest single-site tourist attraction. For outdoor activity Charlotte offers the Carowinds amusement park (open year-round), US Whitewater Center (the world's largest and most complex recirculating artificial whitewater river), three TopGolf facilities, Quail Hollow (world ranked golf course) and endless public parks, nature trails, farmer's markets, etc., etc. Not to mention cultural, musical, performing/fine arts festivals year-round. And yes, minus Gastonia, ALL of Charlotte's suburbs connect to the city.

Good comparison - I travel between the two weekly.
Raleigh is NOT good if you are a single man to find single women over 40. Not even in Cary (Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees). Charlotte is much better from that perspective.

Are their any nice urban cities where its a mix of people

Yes, Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham. Charlotte has a more urban feel, and Raleigh/Durham is more spread out.

But Charlotte has the Carolina Panthers (NFL), Charlotte Hornets (NBA), and Charlotte FC; all professional teams. Not to mention minor league baseball and hockey teams. I guess it's all about preference.

I know the history of the NHL Hurricanes however I just always found it odd that the Canes were based in Raleigh instead of Charlotte where you got the NFL and NBA based at. You would just think the minor league hockey team would be based in Raleigh rather than Charlotte.
