I am so impressed with this channel! I am Chinese American, and plan to visit China for several months. Eileen is a terrific interviewer, and i am not only improving my Chinese language skills but learning so much in depth different cultural aspects of Chinese society from the younger generation. I love this interview particularly the courageous sharing from a lesbian and her struggle to be totally independent, and To live her life fully. Best wishes to you all!❤️👍❤️
I have a Chinese Taiwanese background but was born in America. My parents read my diary and found out I'm a lesbian when I was a senior in hs. They did not accept me. It's been good to see fellow Asian lgbtq allies fight. I think Asian cultures are not as expressive as other cultures about this. I was moved to tears to see Taiwan take a rainbow stand. I was in disbelief as I watched queer Taiwanese people openly kiss without fear in public! This was the first time I heard such queer friendly language in Mandarin. Thanks for the inclusion
It is not "legal" for same sex marriages in Taiwan, it is simply not "illegal" for Taiwanese people. The difference is, if a Taiwanese finds a partner from Vietnam or Mainland China, then they can't get married. They would have to go to a country like Denmark to get married. This was a compromise between the progressives and the conservatives in Taiwan. It is progress, and progress is great
you parents read your diary? 🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀ what good parents you got. My Asian mom read my diary too and found out about my suicidal thoughts. I wrote about killing myself after my Asian father scold me so hard for not getting good grades. I also draw pictures of me killing myself with a knife, hanging from the ceiling, and drinking hand sanitizer and stuff lol. she panicked. I am also a lesbian and I told my mom and she expect me to be straight again someday. lol. My father is expecting me to get a husband and settle with kids cus he thought a woman's life will be fulfilled if only she settle with a husband and kids🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀ He was even writing about how he is going to lecture my future husband and stuff. They expect high grades and I did my best but they expect me to have a husband? What good parents I got. 🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀Even though I grew up with my candid Thai gay friends, I am still sad that I am not frank about my sexuality just because I come from a strict catholic family. I really feel you from my heart. Keep living on sis. Even if your parents don't accept you, just know that there are people who accept you.
Thank you so much for making this interview, both of you ❤ im studying mandarin and I'm part of the lgbtq community, so these things matter to me. I learn a lot more about Chinese people from the onternet than the media or anything. Keep up the good work, amazzing channel and thank you again!! 💖💖
Great job Eileen and Chloe. Chloe, I’m sorry you had to endure so much rejection and pressure from family. Glad you have a career and can make decisions for your life to be happy and at peace with yourself. 加油!
Wow. This is such a fascinating interview. I have to thank Eileen and Chloe for their time and to wish them both the best. I initially started listening only because I'm studying Chinese and wanted to try to understand a few words from native Mandarin speakers. However, I quickly became more interested in the actual content of the conversation and stopped listening. I started reading the subtitles. My takeaway: the issues that everyday people face in modern China aren't that different from the issues faced in western countries..... Now I have to listen to it again without reading the subtitles. My sincere best wishes to Chloe and Eileen.
A lot of comments here on how important the topic is, and how inspiring it is to see Chloe talk about it, and I do wholeheartedly agree, but I would like to emphasize something else, which is actually related to the main purpose of the channel: from a purely linguistic point of view, this is really great content, and in huge part due to Chloe being such an intelligent person and capable conversationalist. I feel like her command of her native language is way beyond average, and she uses a very broad set of language "tools" to express herself. This is of great value to learners, and I hope we can see more of her in the future. And one remark: I really don't feel this is intermediate level of Chinese, I'm sure there are very few foreign learners of Chinese who can understand everything, no matter how advanced they are.
It's true. Chengdu and Shanghai and some of the cities gay culture are really shocking for me as it is really open (there are many gay clubs/bars/communities). However at some cities, you have to take care of yourself as being straight is highly requested.
Amazing video! Thanks a lot for bringing such varied content, specially this kind of topics that are a bit of a taboo in China. Its always amazing not only learning vocab and such but also culture!
i dont know any chinese but just from the subtitles this interview is so fascinating! i love seeing experiences from all around the world, especially the things the US doesn’t want us to see
I'm not looking to learn Mandarin but this video was super interesting! Good job. I'm happy to see more language tutors doing comprehensible input content, and how cool it is that you're covering such interesting topics!
This is not only good for becoming familiar with Chinese conversation style, but also very educational and insightful! I had no idea about the concept of “sham marriages” or the changes that are happening in China because heterosexual couples cannot afford to get married and have children. This gives amazing cultural insight, I would love to see more videos like this on social topics/issues and the Chinese experience! Thankyou mandarincorner
Fantastic content on modern China. You should also go to Chengu or as the scene calls it 'Gaydu'. So many cool Chinese in that city living as they please. It's my favourite city in all the years I lived in China.
Your videos are treasure of Chinese culture in all aspects. That is from language learning to deep insights into human lives, I appreciate supreme quality.
This video is incredible. The interviewer has great questions, let the interviewee answer in her o,w words. As a learner of Chinese I'm absorbing a lot from this. Thank you so much, this must be a lot of work
This and the others in the series are excellent examples of the type of information and learning I need. I really enjoyed hearing this woman's experience and found the interview style professional and sensitive 加 油 !
Being in India makes it even harder for me to come out and tell people that I'm a lesbian, in addition to China. Because many nations have this issue, as I mentioned, and we cannot hold society responsible for it. As a result, they will react negatively. We should start by changing ourselves. We have to acknowledge that a same-gender relationship is about love as much as it is about lust, sex, or time passing. People who identify as LGBT are being bullied and harshed by society, and many are reluctant to identify as such in public. It ought to be modified. Please be respectful; everyone has their own life, love, and respect.
Incredible scope of content, well worth supporting your channel. I learned so much about the Chinese society from your interviews and your walks around the cities and landscapes. I started watching when you described your life as a factory girl. Great content and well prepared.
This was by far your best interview. Very professional on your part Eileen.( btw you look beautiful).Chloe is such a strong woman. Also thanks to her I will never forget the word “ dui “. ❤🇨🇦
Everyone should be able to be happy being who they are, with who makes them happy. It seems like the biggest reason against it is people are very afraid of change and the things that challenge the social structure they are familiar with. But just like you have a right to live your life in a way that makes you happy, so does everyone else.

As a gay man, whenever someone tells me the idea of two men together is perverted I reply with … why you spending all your free time thinking about two men together? 😂😂 That’s says more about what’s going on in your mind while the rest of us are thinking about our hobbies (like watching Eileen’s videos and studying Chinese!!) 😊
Wow, i’m interested to speak mandarin fluently, And this kind of topics makes me feel that is important how to speak this amazing language thanks for share this kind of videos, I hope someday be able to have a conversation in your beautiful language, regards.
I don't understand why Chloe said her relationship is smoother than traditional Chinese families'. She both described typical Chinese fights (such as criticizing her partner for not making enough money) and also said they have gotten into physically violent altercations? Regardless, this was a very well-made video and I appreciate her sharing her story in such detail.
Interesting video. I remember, when I was travelling in China, to see many schoolgirls in pairs, as if they were best friends (I really saw many). But sometimes it was a bit hard not to think that there was something else in their relationship. So I thought maybe lesbianism is more common in China than people think.
So many gay in China but the culture is super represed. Chengdu is a more open city. But many still are weird about it. You can even see the funny angry comments here from those nationalists who only want one view of China. I loved my 7 years in Mainland and have many gay friends there.
Isn't that just seeing what you want to see? It's just how schoolchildren act in Asia. In the West, we jump to that sort of conclusion so easily that it makes same sex friendships awkward...
there are lots of gay girls in china whether they are lesbian/bisexual/pansexual girls if you want to know they really exist or not you can see them Douyin/xiaohingshu look for the hashtag #le , #le in china this is slang which means girls who like girls. if you see a video/photo post on douyin/xiaohungshu there is the hashtag #le in that post, it means that someone is a girl who likes girls
Good video to improve my Mandarin with real live discussion to hold the focus. Add a little comment, the issues of intimate emotion.
