An older video but timeless and a perfect video for the beginner "Airbrusher". I'm 60 years old and just started building models again (Last one built was in 1974). I'm learning that we didn't have the tools back then that model builders do now. Bought me an airbrush and was looking for practical info about how to airbrush and ran across your video. Perfect info and much appreciated! Thanks! Eric
Tip 1. When you are cleaning your airbrush, increase the air pressure by ten to fifteen psi. Tip 2.use lint free scientific tissue wet with thinner to clean the inside of your paint cup and the outside of airbrush. 3. A 1:2 ratio of paint to thinner will help you achieve candy paint( and is my go to ratio in general) 4.apply photo etch parts with glue before you paint to ensure a strong hold( most hobby glues eat paint). 5. Use an explosion proof exhaust fan when painting with lacquer because the fumes are flammable( the fan is usually more powerful as well and will keep your environment fume free). 6. The distance you hold your part away from the spray will change the texture of the finished paint 7. Use a moisture trap as water will cause a splatter effect and ruin your finish( I do my painting near a fish tank so I use one on my tank and my gun) 8. Make sure you use the rapid drying thinner for metallic colors or the metal flakes will sink into the paint and effect the metallic look 9. Always use the slower drying thinner for non-metallic colors to ensure a perfect finish 10. Always use a static free brush on your parts to get rid of the static electric buildup from sanding that will attract dust to your paint job
I just got back into gunpla after 20 years after my initial interest in it. Back then I just built the kits and added stickers. Thia go around I really wanna apply time into my kits to make them look exceptional and I've been very intimidated by the thought of airbrushing. Thanks for helping me ease into this! Great video!
The bug must be going around lol. I havent build a gundam in 20 years and I'm back it!
Me too! I remember building a heavy arms gundam during its popularity in the anime 20 years ago.
It's been about 20 years for me as well. The kits have gotten so much better with intricate designs. I've had to order all the Gundam Wing kits again.
me.. after 8 years....
I got into Gunpla this summer after a massive depressive episode and I’ve never felt happier after being involved in the community. Great, great video with plenty of detail and no chuffa! Thank you!

Another tip for beginngers - Although priming with a rattlecan is absolutely fine, it does release a lot of VOCs into the air as opposed to using a primer that you can load into your airbrush (which could still have VOCs depending on which type you use, but significantly less) and it will continue to off-gas for some time. Same goes with topcoats. When I started doing final topcoats with the airbrush over rattlecans, everything was just so much better and my models weren't off-gassing for weeks.
If you live in a high altitude area (like here in CO) I would recommend warming up the can. Even at room temp sometimes the lower air pressure can play havoc with these. Warming the cans helps with an even spray.
Does the microwave work well?
@@justinhuynh6234 i cant tell if u are joking or for real; u dont insert anything metal into a microwave unless u want your microwave to just.... spoil
Thank you, I just moved to CO so I'm happy you mentioned this
You can but it'll be like that episode of Futurama when they went back in time after putting metal in the microwave
Btw metallic colors have a better look when its on a black primed surface
what about grey primer for gunpla? and does grey work for any other colors??
@@femtohimself71 I use grey a lot if I'm doing like preshading stuff, but it also works if you're going for a solid color paint, but it will be slightly dull compared to white
@@femtohimself71 But if you ask what's worst for gray primer, I'd say yellow or orange, red is fine tho
@@tydshiin5783 could a metallic red work ?
all i have is grey primer
then i was going to apply a bright gold (either mr metallic gold or tamiya titan gold)
then on top use tamiya clear red.
is it going to make the red super dull or will the gold shine through the red and make it ok.
i tested with a silver chrome and the red is sparkly but bright enough... which is why i'm going to attempt gold
@@femtohimself71 Aight, it will still look okay, but it won't be as pretty as having a black base, but if you still want that you can use like black paint or a really really dark color to bring more shine.
But if you're a kinda person who puts like +5 layers of paint, it doesn't really matter a lot for the base
I just came across this video and ive gotta say this is one of the best gunpla airbrush tutorial I've seen. Im definitely gonna share this video, very well done sir thank you.
Vallejo also makes a great airbrush primer in many different colors. No need to head outside or deal with toxic fumes
Best beginner tutorial out there. I just got my friends into Gunpla and I can't wait to show them this!
I just got back into gunpla and got tired of painting with markers and this helped alot thank you sir!
I mainly build Kotobukiya kits (like Armored Core and Frame Arms Girl). Can't wait to paint them!
Oh they're really nice. I love their Wonder Woman and their Evangelions but I can't collect figures they're so damn rare and expensive. I build Gunplas but even Bandai try to be assholes making all the cool stuff limited P-Bandai for no reason at all but to copy the figure industry.
Perfect tutorial! Thank you
Huh so my intuition of using blutac to stick pieces on was right. Hooray. I'm painting by hand since I don't have a good location to use an airbrush or spray paint but it looks like all of my steps are correct. Gotta love how much overlap there is with Amiibo modding!
Terminologies are super helpful for beginners! Thanks for the small info about what to use and how to do it the proper way
pining the connector part is actually beneficial to the parts fitting together
Thanks for this tutorial! I think you're the only airbrushing tutorial I found that addresses panel lining using gundam markers, as I used to just build them, panel line and finish off with a semi-gloss top coat. My airbrush set has been sitting unused because it seems so intimidating to start!
I’m now ready to make my arctic gm sniper 2 when it arrives with all my other stuff.
i know how to nake a snow effect with a top matt top coat
its a joke, dont do it
great detailed video n i still look back everytime i want to get back into it :)
When using sprays please utilize a mask/respirator and gloves for your safety. Also please spray outdoors for ventilation .
I used to paint houses... and one day I was going to town, forgot to wear my respirator and open windows/doors, and when I came to I had painted every door knob and towel bar in the house. Fun...
warming up the an helps when you have a can halfway done , cause you might have a weird ratio of propellant and primer inside , so it can come mushier or too thin , the hotter can tends to make the primer more fluid to reduce possible problems
You can get primer in an array of colors. Look into companies that sell primarily to miniature war gamers. Vallejo (bottle only) and The Army Painter (spray can only) both sell primer in about 20 different colors and I believe that Citadel (i.e. Games Workshop, who produce Warhammer/40K) also does.
Great tutorial! I'm a noob and found this very informative. Thank you.
Loved your video bro thanks for the advice. You made more sense than other gunpla builders keep it up bro.
really just realized this is better than using spray cans because the airbrush stays with you forever and you just get cheap paint :00
Also primer helps the paint sticks on the surface.
Thanks for this great video! As an FYI they also make a pink primer, although it can be bard to find.
when i say easy i mean a light rub with your fingers will remove it...usually...priming is a MUST!!!
For anyone using folkart or any cheaper acrylic paint thin it with some flow improver. It doesn't clog at all.
Great video. I do have a question though, if you have an airbrush....why on earth do you prime with a rattle can?
Why not prime with the airbrush. Vallejo makes airbrush primers in white, grey, and black.
It’s just how I did things. Never could find an airbrush primer I liked. I do now though
@@BoundByGundams Do you mind sharing which airbrush primer you use?
@@KallumMoses I hate people who do that...
BTW seeing all that air can primer wasted in the air when it's so expensive and he has an airbrush made me cringe.
He's probably rich because each of those tiny cans is like 15$
I really want to get into airbrushing Gunpla but I feel it's a daunting thing to get started with.
Mostly because of how, where and which mask/filter to buy.
Let alone having the space and possibly a spray booth.
I'll admit. Enamel has a learning curve, but after that is the most durable. Also, if you use mr color, you can paint testors and tamiya on top of it, and just erase it with tamiya or testors tinner, and wont do anythig to the mr color paint.
Mr Color is lacquer type paint right?
@@GigawingsVideo Yes, Mr Color is lacquer
@@dunetiger thank you.
Superb tutorial, ez to understand. Thx
If you don't like blue tac you can use a wooded kebab scewer and fit the taper into a pin hole
Thank you SO much. This is incredibly helpful.
I found them dude! Awesome!
Very good job of teaching ! Looking forward to watching more.
Thank you for clarifying panel lining after painting it. Was really trying to figure it out how would I clean the excess panel lines since I'd be using the same thinner of the paint (handpainting my kit barb lupus 1/100 btw).
Thanks again, will go through some more of your tutorials should I bump into another concern. Great video :)
I'm 4 years late to this video, but it was incredibly useful. Thank you.
I've ordered a couple Gunpla PG kits, and a MG RX-178 v2 to train myself again, and I decided to try and shed my fear of painting and do these kits right from now on. Thank you for the tips.
Awesome instructive and informative video! Thank you 😎👍
I find Krylon white primer to be very inconsistent compared to the gray variety, I might have to get the Tamiya stuff in the future if I need white primer.
Recyclex I generally have terrible time with krylon. Sometimes theyre so grainy even after I gave them a decent amount of shaking
Kris Jou everytime i uuse. Krylon, theres bits of paint everywhere, but its the only thing availible where i live
So y'all know, Rustoleum One Touch works okay. I've never used their primer, though. I usually stick with gloss because of the lack of particles.
I use the cheap etch primer cans from the automotive shops. 13$ for a can 2.5x the size of the tamiya and 2 $ cheaper lol...
The title is somewhat inaccurate since the first half is about sprayprinting primer. However, the part about spraypainting primer is very helpful.
Spray on runners all the time where a slight touch up won't show. Works for me.
Awesome vid m8.
Great job Jesse! Thx alot
Thanks man
great video! this is so helpful for me! thank you so much :D
a good start for me , before i watched this video i spray painted the shield of my epyon
Hahaha, I like UA-cam’s auto comments when the air compressor is going. It just says [Music].
Hey Jesse, what happened to your? I see you haven't posted any gundam videos in a while. Hope you are doing well, it would be great if you keep us fed with tutorials :)
Thanks for sharing great tutorial.
amazing tutorial!! Keep it up! :D
Hello, I'm one of the begginners. Thanks for sacrificing your lungs for us! lol
Jokes apart, here's my question: I have a toy from Bandai's (it's an action figure, that's made of plastic for all I know). I want to change the color from pink to blue. Since it's a simply change (most of the figure is the color I want to replace and the few places that aren't can be covered by tape) and there's no way to dissamble the figure that I know of, I can just spray paint it? Or should I still apply the white layer and then try out the airbrush thing? To be honest I wonder if it's possible just to spray it.
Another important detail with the figure is that you are supposed to put stickers on it. What should pay attention to after I paint the figure with the color I want? Should I use any other kind of product so the glue of the sticker will, well, stick to the painted figure?
Anyway, here's hope my questions are clear. I'm not a native english speaker so language barrier can be a pain. Specially when looking for the recomended produts.
You ever paint your toy?
if you can't disassemble it, the last option is to mask off the areas where your blue paint is unwanted. very difficult to do since you need to be precise with the masking tape. better not do that next time
I know this is a year late and maybe you already did it but my advise is. Lightly sand the whole thing, prime it with fine tamiya primer use fine layers, paint it all your main color while masking the scond color parts with rubber masking paint and a small brush, let it dry for a while but don't let the rubber sit for hours. After it dries, remove the masking and then do a reverse masking and coper the rest of the figure with paper towels as much as you can and lightly apply the secondary color. Once that's done let it try and apply clear coat. Good luck.
Thanks for the tips, guys. I haven't paint it yet because at first, I couldn't find the materials. Now, I did we are with this whole chaos. But I'm still planning to do it.
Hey dude thanks for this guide :D
Nice tuts. I think airbrushing is not that hard but it could be intimidating to beginner. Why didn't you use primer with airbrush? On side note I envy you can use vallejo. I don't seems to have any luck using it. Clogged the airbrush pretty bad.
Tried it. Still can't get it to work. Luckily Gaia notes and mr hobby works just fine.
Well i'm still waiting for tuts on how you trim the decal on shining gundam. Damn it looks good XD
Very helpful video, helped ease me up on getting myself to start airbrushing. For the inner frame what’s your best method to paint it? Do you leave the frame all assembled and paint it or do you disassemble it, primer, then paint?
Jesse Clary nice thanks for the reply I finally got my airbrush kit in the mail and now I’m waiting on my spray booth I can’t wait to get started!
Super helpful! I'm an apsalus beginner
Very good tutorial!
i just ordered an airbrush set and i had a few questions i wanted to ask
*im mainly painting lacquer(gaia & mr color) since those were what was left from handpainting, is there anything i need to watch out for?
*how should i clean the airbrush? would i need to flush it with thinner?
*and what should i do to switch between colors?
From my personal research (I also bought an airbrush recently):
1. Although you can use lacquer paints in an airbrush, you need to consider the consequences of it: the vapour created by the airbrush can be dangerous if you breathe it in - not like is fine to breathe in the acrylic paints but, while is safer to use acrylics in you house where you eat and sleep, it is not recommended the same for other type of paints. In any case, good ventilation is needed and masks, spray booths, even cleaning gloves are recommended. Better safe than sorry.
2. Honestly, search videos with cleaning the airbrush, here on youtube, or even google, you will get an idea. Shortly, use water (distilled recommended but not necessary) between colors and thinner when you finished a session and you will not paint that day anymore. Always clean the airbrush after a session, because, again, better safe than sorry. Also watch out for what thinners do you use, because some of them can eat up rubber components inside the airbrush, if you leave the airbrush too much soaked in them. The newer airbrushes tend to use silicone based components nowdays, so maybe this will not be the case, if your airbrush is a new model.
3.If you want transition between the colors, leave the old color in and mix the new color with the old color and spray a layer otherwise rinse the airbrush with water until the old color is cleared then put the new color.
Spraying primer from the can is quite wasteful. Decan the primer and spray from the airbrush allow the can to last way longer. Primer to airbrush does not need too much waiting, for me, it usually 5-10 minute between primer and lacquer airbrush. I also find that Mr surfacer 1200 work better than tamiya fine primer
Getting a refresher before I start ab today. One question on sanding and washing: if you sand and not wash, would the dust cause issues with the results of some painting? More specific, paints that have a high shine, finishes that will show imperfections? I read that in regards to candy paint work, it will reveal a lot such as uneven surface, chips, what's left of not completely removing marks where nubs used to be, etc. Would this be an exception to really go into all aspects of prep, as assumingly accumulation of sanding dust will not give a surface as smooth and consistent if it was washed off. But that's my "educated guess" from reading and going off of other similar work involving preparation.
Wear a mask..... or get a paint booth. They have a very reasonably priced one on amazon I got for maybe 150 with exhaust tube that fits in a window, has led lights, and a painting turn table.
What is the different between white colour spray and white primer? Can i use colour spray for primer
Awesome thank you!!!
Great tip on not using markers on your paint. Tried it a few times and got mixed results.
Do you have any videos for pre shading? Been doing this for about 2 years with gundam and transformers. Recently got an airbrush and feel like I'm jumping from beginner to novice. Your videos have given more pointers than any I have seen on youtube. Tha ks alot man.
fire rabbit thanks! No I don’t. I’m honestly ass at preshading
The testors enamel has to be thinned at a ratio of one part paint two parts thinner
I'm gonna build my first kit ever in a few days when i got everything i need, so i'm more begginer than a new born😅 my question is, how do i identify in how many parts i'm gonna paint without messing the order i have to clip them out of the template? The kit is Metal Gear Rex, is a lot of small pieces to paint, and i dont want to skip any step from the manual and get lost!😱
I just stick some masking tape with the part number on the alligator clip thing so that I know what part it is and then build it from that
what about pressure? What PSI would you use for Thinner paints compared to lets say Primers. I know you are using the Tamiya bottle stuff but Me thinks that will get expensive down the line compared to just buying a bottle of primer that can be airbrushed. I am REALLY wanting to get into air brushing so I am trying to get as much information as possible. regards,
I love my metallic color shift akryllic paints by folkart. they have been great for my warhammer army, but i don't airbrush my models.
how much volume of red paint do you think you used for that model? Great tutorial and well explained, but if I am mixing paint, i just want a rough idea of many mls I need might need...
Very useful information but I've got a question about the final topcoats
For weathering what kind is generally better to work with or looks better in the end? Would weathering look just as good on gloss and matte? Or would it look worse on gloss since it's more shiny and weathering kind of goes into more gritty territory?
Lacquer, acrylic, or enamel for this gloss coat before you panel line with enamel wash? Will lacquer gloss smear the paint if you use acrylic or enamel?
you will want a lacquer most likely, lacquers are stronger than enamels and acrylic therefore if you use enamel thinner it shouldn't smear the lacquer coat as long you let it cure
What’s a glossy top coat? Is that a different top coat spray paint or is it something you can apply with the airbrush?
A top coat is just a protective clear layer you put on at the end to protect to paint underneath. There are different finishes of top coat. So applying a glossy top coat will give the final appearance a glossy look. There are several finishes like matte, semi-gloss, satin, etc. but it’s all top coat. Just depends how you want the final finish to look like.
paper taped to a cardboard sheet behind it is very helpful for air brush paint practice.
1 st. Nice video in fact I've just started airbrushing and this video helped a lot
How long to let the primers, Paint and topcoats dry?
This is very helpful! Thanks :D
Hi, i have question about the AV paint
Can i mix with tap water if i dont have the AV thinner??
And if can, can i know the ratio of it for 1 paint tear drop = how many water tear drop?
I had bought the AV gun metal paint n tried on hand brush use but doesnt work well, didnt use anymore n end up left it aside
you wash after you sand because you just forced micro bits of plastic into crevices you can't see with a naked eye.
Hi can I know what is the colour code of the Vallejo paint you used? I’m building chars zaku ii and I’m planning to airbrush it
Thank you for this super nice video, one question, is it fine to airbrush outdoor, btw I live in Arizona
Jesse Clary yeah I kinda worry about the dusts tho, but I figure its such a short duration to airbrush its probably fine
just curious, why is it bad to panel line with a gundam marker after painting?
If you’ve ever tried it you’d know. The marker’s ink just does not agree with paint. It either doesn’t come out, is uneven, or the nib scratches up the paint.
I've been wanting to color a piece of yellow plastic both white and red, would using a white primer and then coloring some parts red and leaving the rest without any extra paint be a good idea or would it be better to also use white paint instead of just the primer by itself?
Thanks for the lung sacrifice bro
I don't know if you're gonna read this but I have a question. If I prime my gundam with white primer but use a grey acrylic as a base, will it work as if I had used a grey primer? Thanks!
Vicent Reyes are you just trying to layer because you need a gray base? The base will determine the shade of you top layers. So if you prime with white, colors on top will be brighter. Gray is neutral. Black will be the darkest.
You can layer paint how you wish so yes what youre asking will work. Just be sure to let it dry but just know that the primer doesn’t HAVE to be grey.
@@BoundByGundams I do a sort of effect of darker edges around the panels so that it looks like the gundam is weld together. I couldn't get my hands of grey primer so I was wondering if white primer and a darker base acrylic would do the trick. I think it's just layering colours but its my very first gundam build so I'm really confused lol
Hi jesse, so i have a problem with my repaint model. My problem is the paint doesnt stick, even i already used primer and topcoat. When i assemble the part the paint it's broke/scratch, it's like very weak. Maybe you know about my problem? thanks for your attention
Jesse Clary usually, how long you wait the paint until it cured and then assemble again?
Hi, I m super beginner, Just finished my first Gunpla MG Rx-78-2 ORIGIN and i m not confident to paint it yet. So for the meantime can i just coat mine and leave it and paint to later after i aquire some skills. I m worried that if i leave it uncoated my gundam will decolor like my figurine
Rizalf Noir if you keep your model out of direct sunlight it shouldn’t discolor
@@BoundByGundams how about the painting can i paint it again after coat it? To keep my gunpla looks nice and all
Can you overlayer paints? Like put a coat Of tamiya paint, and then a. Coat of vallejo model air later
how long does the primer dry/cure, then at what is the right time interval to apply new airbrush paint on a previously painted layer? Thank you
24 hours for both just to be safe
@@BoundByGundams thank you
Thanks
It's a hopper brochacho.
Jesse can you recommend the proper paint I should use on cosmetic products such s Lipstick containers ?
Wtf is that gunpla collective link? It took me to a gun site
Lol I’ll have to remove it from this and other videos then. It used to be some weird start up some guy tried to get going a while back that would host tutorials and sell stuff. But that has been long gone haha
I think I get really confused on the ending about the gloss coat, can someone help me understand? I cant find that anywhere at my local hobby store
Gloss coat is just a clear paint, it's used to protect the underlying layers search up Mr hobby GX100, you will want something like that
Can someone suggest a good affordable airbrush kit for first timers? I have no painting skills but want to start painting my gunpla's.
Iwata Neo for the airbrush and any cheap compressor on Amazon
I just blasted my first kit with grey primer and I have a question. How long do i wait until I can put paint over it?
P4brotagonist follow the instructions on the can or bottle. Generally 24 hours
@@BoundByGundams Thank you for the insanely quick reply! I am using the same Tamiya as you and it doesn't actually mention it on the can, so I was torn between waiting an hour or waiting a week.
paint comes off really easily if you don't use a primer
sorry sir, so.. Vajilo need which thinner or not?.. thanks sir
No it does not
Can you made a video using acrylic paints for airbrush?
