I know this video is old, but I'd like to thank you for it. It's extremely simple, easy to follow, and extremely effective in it's goal. I made a master grade heavyarms in 3rd grade and busted him up real bad. Now I'm a junior in high school and going back and weathering him up and I think he's gonna be saved. Thanks for the great tutorial!
I very recently got back into Gunpla after so many years, i want to be able to go beyond just building the model and this video is going to be a huge help. I love this stuff and the whole building process is so cathartic for me, great video!
Dude this video is great.........and you make your gundams look like they just came out of battle.....like they could come alive dude. Nice job. Yeah......theres flashier painters out there........but you have realism down to a "T" dude........Im literally blown away by your work dude. Edit - Dude...Lol. 😂😂Got me so excited my vocabulary went out the window.
Man. You always answer every question i have about techniques, so glad I found your channel. I find myself wanting to hit the like button every couple minutes.
Nice lesson! It has been so many years I have not done any Gundams. I am planning to go back again and trying to learn different techniques from different experts on UA-cam. My question is about applying clear coats. Do you apply a clear gloss coat before or after doing panel lining and weathering? Is the clear coat acrylic or varnish? Thanks!
I’m actually in the process of trying to put together a Char custom Zaku II and the RX-78, both HG models. And I wanted to get a nice little fight scene going, so having some guides on weathering and battle damage I felt would be super helpful for that.
Wow! Amazing tutorial! Loved it. So recently I painted the Bandai's Gipsy from Pacific Rim. I am really confused about what medium to use for weathering. My workflow - Tamiya acrylics > Tamiya gloss coat > Stickers/Water Decals > Tamiya Panel Lining > weathering using Tamiya enamel silver & Tamiya weathering kit > Gloss coat again. Will that work? I had to panel line very carefully, tried not to over spill because I was scared to use X-20 to wipe the excess panel lines, will tamiya enamel thinner X-20 wipe the acrylic base coat if it is used to wipe panel lines?
@@BoundByGundams Thank you for the tip. Yeah, I was really careful with the panel lining, solely because I had a base coat on and the metallic midnight blue shade was hard to make with the shades I have. I have been holding back on weathering the kit since the past two months. Will give it a go.
Great tutorial man, I'm considering on weathering my Z'Gok like this after watching lol, usually I stick with the dry brush style for my weathered kits but man the sponging effect is great
Great video! I am working on a WH40k Riptide. If my base/main colors are reds, would you still chip with a metallic? I am thinking a bit darker/dirtier metallic. My other question: how would you streak on deep/dark red? Any particular color you might suggest?
TheMeanDM you can still use silver with red. I would suggest a lighter silver. As for streaking on dark colors, it’s going to be very subtle. You’re not going to get the same pop from streaking on lighter colors. You can use a lighter brown or reddish brown wash to create the streaks.
Hi, great vid definitely helps. I’ve just got my first Gundam & want to weather it, when you apply the clear coat, it looks like you apply it to a complete assembly? Does the clear coat seal the joints? Can you still move the joints without the clear coat cracking? Once again great vid & thanks for the valuable tips 👍👍
Getting back into Gunpla and i love your technique. thankyou for the tips. currently building a Freedom Strike 2.0 MG and i think it's going to look sweet with these effects.
I have not yet applied a top coat, but the black acrylic paint easily rubs off the smooth plastic. Does the top coat "lock" it in or should there be a matte coat and then the acrylic?
Jeff Hill the top coat with lock it in. That’s the point of top coat. Be sure to let the black paint completely dry. If you can rub it off then it’s probably not dry
there are 500ft robots they would realistically have massive gouges and chunks on metal missing all over the place, not quite sure what you mean by scaling. iv seen a diorama that has a gundam being rel built and there is one of those Lil people painting one of the wings hanging off a rope.
Basically, i dont suppose there is "paint" in Seed gundams, since the colors are comming from variable/phase shift armors.. good tutorial though!!! Really realistic.. specially the rusting effect...
Thanks for your good video :) But i have 1 question, if i have no tamiya weathering master, what can i use as weathering altenatives? Are gundam markers work as well? one more time, thank you Jesse :)
Jesse, great tutorial! I feel I can finally start digging into this type of weathering with your techniques. Thanks again and keep the videos coming. What are you using to record? Great quality!
Hey man. What is a good way to weather over sticker decals? I did this technique on my RX-93. And the big sticker on the shield is super noticeable and takes away from the illusion. Any tips?
@@BoundByGundams thank you very much! Ive been wanting to get some waterslide decals. I just picked up a Sazabi RG so I think I will get some waterslide decals for that one.
The purpose of top coat is to like hold on the colour he just painted right, hold on all those black silver brown dots so they will not fade away right? @JesseClary
@@BoundByGundams ok, becuz my mom doesn't allow me to reach a certain budget so i think that i will not buy the tomiya thing, And one more question, is HG suitable for this kind of effects?
I don't see why you couldn't. You'd just want to "milk" some onto a dish then sponge it like the video shows. I wouldn't try to do it straight from the marker.
@@wayne2411 used it straight from the marker still looks good since that marker's tip is kinda messed up like it's not writing or something like that i could easily remove the tip
Damn, dude. You make it dirrrrrrrrrty. 😂 Looks good though. Very unique result. I rarely see a finished product with so many styles together, but it's yours.Too many gunpla painters do everything "by the book" and you can't tell Judy's work from Tom's. Picked up some cool tips. Thanks, man.

I've done a bit of the silver dry brushing, but something I want to try out is just making my own powders. For the black, charcoal off some burnt wood, and for the rust...well...rust, but ground down more.
This rusting is way too much for a Gundam. Maybe it could work with a Barbatos from IBO because those Gundams literally live in junk yards but most Gundam some slight scratched edges are enough because they don't rust to this extend. They have super Armor, force fields or super metal alloys that don't rust.
With all due respect, wouldn't they maintain those machines better? Does our army send rusty tanks into a battle? I can understand wear from age like light scratches, mud from a battle, or fresh damage, but they're not old tractors.
