Respect to the way Jay encourages Neil to walk us through the details, even though he's rebuilt plenty of these units himself, putting the teaching before the ego. Great presenter, excellent guest, thanks guys.

Ya gotta hold the lever halfway before tightening screws, to centralize the diaphragm. Who's gonna piss about with their pump if they don't know how. It's a long walk home.
Jay Leno's Garage. The softest channel in all of youtube. So one can hear people whispering and super loud engine sounds. Kudos (supposed to be fired) sound engineer! What a great (deaf inducing) channel!

I just ordered a rebuild kit for my 55 Buick roadmaster so i looked for videos like this. The ethanol must be why it's leaking and burning oil. I don't use ethanol anymore. 110 dollars to fill it but my baby is gonna get what she needs.
years ago, had a '66 chevy 1/2 ton with a 283. Loved that truck.
Came out one morning to go work, turned over the engine and knew right away something was wrong. Turns out the diaphragm in the fuel pump was bad and the crankcase was full of gas. It really does happen.
This video answers a lot of those hidden problems.. It helped me a lot ... Thanks !!!

Fuel pump pressure can affect carburetor flooding. Please explain how critical it is to check manufacturing specification to ensure the pump is not pumping too much gas into the carburetor.
I drive a 74 Beetle. In Minnesota. There just ARE none up here, I've driven all summer. Seen ONE. I'd have to wait a week for a replacement pump. NO off the shelf replacements. I went electric in 90. now in 13 I'm on pump number three. The Ethanol was trashing the Mexican pumps.
My volume is all the way up and its still one of the most quite you tube channels
In farming parts of the country, you can usually find one gas station in the area that sells a gas with no ethanol. Farmers hate ethanol 😊
agree learned the hard way in the northeast you get condensation with Sabbs, when it hits the orange they say you have 30 miles but in reality you have about 4 miles allways keep half full
10% Ethanol is the country wide standard, the new E15 has been approved only for vehicles MY2001 or newer and is supposed clearly labeled. Stations that sell other Ethanol blends clearly mark them as E-XX to indicate the increased Ethanol content.

A bomb... and maybe that's why they switched to electrical pumps with pressure regulators? I would have liked to know more about your thoughts on that. Had no idea that could happen with older mechanical pumps. Very interesting learned a lot. Thank you.
Note people he didn't say sand it smooth, he said flat! It needs some crosshatching to bite into. I also like to do the screws up (not tight but all the way). Let the seal go off then another quarter turn to cinch them up. Doing it up tight while the goo is runny just forces it out.

Also a lot of premium grade gas is ethanol free. I have an early CIS VW and ethanol eats at all the rubber gaskets in the fuel system. Car runs much happier on premium and no ethanol worries!
electronic fuel pumps get hot so having it in the tank keeps it cool thats why its hard on your pump if you run out of gas or not keeping at least 1/4 tank of fuel

That's pretty much the case with all cars these days. I believe the reasoning is that it's easier for a pump to push fuel from the tank rather than pulling it. It also frees up a little engine bay space. But I agree, having to take a tank out to replace a simple fuel pump is not ideal.

I have replace many electric fuel pumps only once did the tank have to be removed maybe we have a very different fleet here but usually there is a inspection panel in the boot you can remove to get to it. side note they are close to fully sealed the electric pumps but they use the fuel as there lubricant.
I I believe the presenter was metaphorically speaking when he uses the term “bomb”. In this example the bomb could mean the disastrous damaged cause by dilution of engine oil when mixed with gasoline; which consequently provides for no friction protection from the moving parts of the engine.

To help out one of my favorite car shows - after the video edit is done, export the audio and toss it in Audacity (free audio software). Then do a quick compression using the default settings for 'Makeup gain'. Export the compressed audio back out and into your video editor. You will have high-volume sound w/out clipping, and your quiet bits will be a little louder so it is more listenable. Or hire me for sound editing :8.
In some yep, depends on the gas station you go to. I only put in what is labeled as "Ethanol free"

not sure if alot of cars have it, i work on boats and they have a line that runs from the pump housing up to the carb so that if the pump fails and leaks it kills the motor reducing risk of "bomb" like the pump guy was saying.
I agree, I'm wearing headphones and have volume on my PC and UA-cam all the way up and I can "barely" hear anything

I can't tell people how many of those earlier electric pumps I sold back in my parts days, and all because people refused to keep the pump submerged in gasoline by running it too low on fuel on a regular basis.

be care full you probably need high volume low pressure fuel pump if it is going onto a carb or low volume low pressure the high pressure will food the fuel bowl and carb

I think if you drop a quart can filled with gas it's going to spill. At least there won't be glass to sweep up but the can won't prevent a spill if you drop it.

My 95 firebird has a fuel pump problem. About every tenth start-up, I have to use a rubber mallet to pound the bottom of the tank to get it working. I dread having to drop the tank for a replacement, but the day is coming.

I was under a 71 Plymouth Valiant trying to figure out why it quit running when the mechanical fuel pump fell off, dumping about a pint of gas in my eyes mouth and hair.

The really sad thing about ethanol, is that it does nothing for the environment because of the carbon output required to create it. It is just a big-agra subsidy. Too much lobbying/money to stop.

I am glad we have no ethanol in the state I live in...
more accurately you have 3 sources where you can lower the volume.
Jay you have plenty of cash get ethanol free gas at most ‘’car sports shops’’ or airplane fuel.
Here in Central Florida there are numerous stations selling ethanol free fuel. It's only about 15 cents more than regular.
This might come as a surprise to you but this video isn't about Jay Leno's vehicles or his cash. It's about tips and tricks for the common man to fix a fuel pump. Many people call this, "giving back to the community" by creating instructional videos for us common folk.

No one should put on an electric fuel pump on a vehicle as a replacement for a mechanical pump UNLESS they add a safety switch to shut of the electric pump in the event of an accident or roll over
