Glen and Maddo you have to be the very best ambassadors for New Zealand. In all my seventy years living in New Zealand I have never visited Oamaru or Timaru, and so many other lovely towns so interesting and well maintained, that you take the time to explore so thoroughly, as well as the spectacular scenery. And the amazing cheeseboard - better than world class!! Thank you for taking us along with you.😍
Yep, most people including New Zealanders, don't realise that instant coffee was invented in Invercargill in the South of New Zealand by David Strang in 1890.
Thank you for visiting Oamaru. I was born and raised in Oamaru. It such a quirky town and as you said, it is like going back in time but still a very special place.
As someone who spent the majourity of my life in Oamaru its cool to see you guys exploring the place I would call home :) Also you can absolutely find penguins down at the harbour under the upside down boats and in their little homes, shouldn't disturb them of course but they do come out and wander around the place and up to the playground.
Another class act from Glenn & Maddo, what a pleasure to view their you tube adventure through this wonderful country New Zealand & they are so delightful a couple & so genuine... So good to view Oamaru, I think we will visit ....
Steampunk Capital of the world And where frozen meat started in the world - shipped from a farm nearby all the way to Britain in the 1800's Now it has 3 breweries - 2 you can visit. Lots of seals and Penguins you can see by yourself. COLD water, but great surf.
Guys I had driven through Oamaru a couple of times (State Highway 1) without stopping. Then last April we stopped and explored the Victorian presinct. I think Mado best described the town when outside Steampunk when she said 'quirky'.Oamaru has done a great job in giving visitors a big reason to stop and look around. Possibly NZ's most quirky small town for all the good reasons. Loved the coverage abd Mado maybe found her best cheese platter so far in NZ. Thanks guys.
I think you need to understand that 'steampunk' is about what the world might have looked like if steam had continued to be developed rather than gas. It's a vision of an alternate now/future. It's very cool and has a whole culture behind it! That's what the museum is about ❤
I am loving your vlogs. Oamaru is an amazing little town. Steampunk is a very particular style and Oamaru is the steampunk capital of NZ. I am holding my breath for your arrival in Dunedin. I went to Uni there and lived there for many years. It is a very special city.
I lived in Oamaru and went to school there I was even an alter boy in that large church called the basilica you visited which is located in Reed st, when I was 11 or 12 years old all those shops down by the bay where all run down old warehouses full of grain, wool, alcohol ect, Oamaru was a great town to grow up in during the seventies, I left in 1978 but still have great memories of Oamaru and it's people, thanks for sharing your visit to this lower half of the south island.
Pretty cool to see how much you guys loved my backyard. Im pretty spoiled to have grown up in this town. And allday bay is the best beach around. Great surfing at the other end of the bay.
That was my childhood summer playground - fishing from the wharf, exploring the railyard and some of the buildings that were empty near the Steam Punk museum, trying to catch eels in the creek under the old wooden rail bridge - "just be back by dinner". Attending the annual Oamaru Carnival at the show grounds with a few coins for the side show games was a highlight as well. I have watched a few of your NZ travel videos. You present them very well and I like that you include a commentary of historical and featured information of the locations as well.
It was great to see you visiting Timaru and Oamaru. We live near Christchurch and visited Oamaru for the first time a couple of years ago. The old architecture is beautiful and we really enjoyed our few days there. Spent a lot of time in Timaru as a kid as had extended family there. Love both of these places.
That old blue convertible car is an early 1970's Triumph Herald. Rainbow Confectionary is definitely cheap at their factory shop, and you can also buy from their online shop. They make products that are sold under a lot of different brand names, depending on who is stocking their stuff. One down side of southern beaches in the summer is how cold they can get compared to the ones up here on the North Island - no need to rug up!😎
idk if anyone has said this but fun fact the chocolate fish on the rainbow building melted a few years ago because it got too hot and had to replace it
So exciting to see Oamaru so nicely recorded! The Historic Precinct is a real point of pride, it has really picked up in the last ten years. I cannot mention the video to my family however because you skipped the half of the CBD that contains my auntie's shop haha
Thanks for showing me that Whitestone Cheese Deli! We are off to the South Island in two months and that is now on my list! If we ever saw you on the road we'd be sure to stop and chat :)
I am a ngai tahu maori, thank you both for visiting and enjoying my home island Te Waipounamu ,before you move on please find out the meaning of pounamu(the green stone)loving your advantage ,I feel Maddo will understand and enjoy the gift of pounamu and the Mana it holds, enjoy life and your next coffee Glen
There's a big limestone church ⛪️ up on the side of a hill which is open to the public to look through architecture it looks down onto the city of Oamaru and the Harbour.
Pro tip guys, you need to film at 25fpd or 50fps in New Zealand, that's why all the lights are flickering in this video. This video is in 60fps. Our lights run on a 50hz frequency, which is different to some other parts of the world. The framerate is not matching the frequency of the lights, so the flickering is being picked up.
The main commodities that built these coastal towns on the South Island were, coal, native timber hardwoods like the Kauri , and of course the 1850's gold rush which had a lot of Australians coming over to stake their gold panning . hence the Bank of Australia exchanging gold for cash. The whale blubber trade also brought prosperity to these towns reflected by the enormous grand churches and buildings. Today none of these commodites generate the same level of income. The Steam trains would have been ladden with coal and wood, wool and cattle/sheep . Tourism is the new commodity but even that is no where near the old days generation of economic power. Most of the South Island is agricultural since the clearing of Kauri forests. Try sleeping out under the clear starry sky at night on a clear warm summers night with the sea at your feet . Magical.
i just loved your presentation, you two. One thing, you didn't visit the penguin colonies. Something else Oamaru is famous for. Thank you guys for show casing our country and your relaxed vibe is very appealing.
Onyas. If ya get a chance, check out National Toy n Transport Museum at Wanaka Airport,I highly recommend it if youd like t step back in time,f all the family.😊
They unfortunately have to close churches when there aren't any services or masses going on. This is because of people going in & causing expensive damage.
Certain people from a certain part of the world 😉 are who have the Vape shops, the Liquor shops. Sadly they seem to think that we need them on every street corner and it's about time all councils NZ wide, started regulating them so much more seriously!!

I didn't know that. I'm 50, from the south, and interested in such things, but I never knew it was a Kiwi. I love little nuggets of info like that.
Had some Dutch sort-of in laws. They said NZ is the land of Cheddar cheese and instant coffee. They hated it.
Thank you for visiting Oamaru. I was born and raised in Oamaru. It such a quirky town and as you said, it is like going back in time but still a very special place.

Missed out not going through the Steampunk HQ, it's really cool
2nd best part of Oamaru other than the pengiuns

You missed out by not going to Steam Punk HQ, it's amazing
Yeah I thought the same. That's why most people go to Oamaru.
The look on Mado's face when the cheese board arrived....LOL!. You guys have inspired me, a Kiwi, to explore more of my country. Love the videos.
I must say Oamaru you look like my kind of town, even thou I'm from the the Tron, but lov'in your NZ Tour you guys are great!

I knew you'd see Martin in Oamaru! He's a good friend. Recently packed up life in the big city of Auckland and is loving it down South.
And you can just wander through without paying any admission fees. Awesome!
18:53 Star and Garter we quite often drive all the way from Dunedin just to have lunch there....great place.
I've probably cooked you lunch then!
@@haunting_bluejay probably.....love the food there that is for sure

If you get a chance Glen and Maddo check out the botanic gardens in Oamaru they are stunning especially the Japanese garden!
The Bank of Australia is now the Oamaru Squash Club. It is boarded up as there is a squash court behind them
The boarded up old bank is now used as a squash club and courts :) so glad u enjoyed your time here :)

Oamaru is the Steampunk Capital of NZ they have a big festival and Steampunkers come from around the world.
I lived just outside of Oamaru in a little town called Hampden for a bit. Never got the chance to explore Oamaru so cheers for the vid.
You didn't go through the Steam Punk Headquarters!!!! What was the point in going to Oamaru??? 🤦 It's the Steam Punk capital of the world!!!
Yea I live that spot
pleased to have you here
Hope you enjoyed the Oamaru new potatoes, they're my favourite, especially the jersey beanies.
idk if anyone has said this but fun fact the chocolate fish on the rainbow building melted a few years ago because it got too hot and had to replace it

What a great town, it so underrated. I could smell the flavours of the cheese factory from my couch ! Thanks G & M. Marvelous
Those are splendid markets and shops
I absolutely love Oamaru. Thank you for sharing this... :-)
Its so weird seeing the resturant you work at in a random youtube video you've stumbled upon! (I'm one of the cooks at Star and Garter haha)
There's a big limestone church ⛪️ up on the side of a hill which is open to the public to look through architecture it looks down onto the city of Oamaru and the Harbour.
You have to remember we're only a couple of hundred years old haha to us old farming equipment is considered an ancient relic
When you head to the Nelson Tasman region, I can tell you of many special spots to visit.
I love visiting this town 😸😸 the playground was a big part of my childhood
I hate this town (I live there)
that cafe had an chimney that every now and then fire would come out it but they removed it
Thank you for showing me old Oamaru. I've only ever driven through.
I've been to Oamaru many times but haven't seen everything that U showed us. Will have to go back

Make sure you check out the cathedral's in Dunedin.
When i was a kid those honesty stalls were on almost every country rd drive way.
Big wheel at front and little wheel at the back does not make a tricycle... 😆

Very good.! when u return i can give you a tour of monastic sights in Dublin 22 etc
That’s it David will be back in July! Reach out on Istagram buddy!
Should have gone into Lagonda Tearooms, it's an Oamaru icon. Best cheese is down the road by the Karitane turn off. Not Whitestone.
We heard it was Whitestone 😉🤣
@GlenAndMado Whitestone learnt from this place which was the first small cheese factory in NZ.
i just loved your presentation, you two. One thing, you didn't visit the penguin colonies. Something else Oamaru is famous for. Thank you guys for show casing our country and your relaxed vibe is very appealing.
Was abit on the pricey side unfortunately so we gave it a miss as we have seen them in timaru for free 😂 really appreciate your comment though! ♥️

you two are pretty much fully fledged kiwi's the amount of places you've been in a short amount of time.
I loved this place
"big tricycle" 🤔 tri means three ie three wheels. That is a penny farthing inspired bicycle.
Thats a famous Steampunk museum.
Your attempt to say the town names correctly (Dun-e-din not Dune-din, Oa-ma-ru) is great
It's a shame that the Catholic church was closed i looked through there about 6 year's ago the architecture inside was great 👍 👌 😀
The side door may have been open. The Basilica in Timaru is beautiful w side door usually open.
👍👍
@Just Dorit my home town

Steampunk! 😊

There are definitely a lot of psychedelic drugs in the Steam Punk town
Timaru is much nicer than Oamaru in my opinion
The brewery is gluten free.
the brewery also makes gluten free beer. but most of the beers on tap are not gluten free
Born n raised there.....meth has taken hold, shame you guys don't know the relevance of anything around the harbor...thanks for visiting though 😂
Most NZ Towns are ugly as s*** but Oamaru has a nice charm. More traditional architecture!
