You did a great job on this video. I am 32 years old and have been stuck stateside for the past five years after coming and going from abroad. I am preparing for another move in the next year after I wrap up my undergraduate degree. Your video reminded me of how lonely expat life can be, yet, your life still seems so rich and fulfilling on so many levels. It reminded me why I am seeking to get out. You've got a beautiful soul and it shines through in your videos.
Awww, thank you for being lovely. My life is rich now, but it wasn't always. I hope the warning in my video may help your transition be easier. The world is for the brave! 💜💜💜
I absolutely relate to the last point you made. I'm Canadian and have been living here for 9.5 years, only back to Canada three times. It was only the last time I went back (last year) that I felt that New Zealand was my home now and Canada wasn't home anymore. It was a weird feeling to be a "visitor" in the country I spent most of my life in. Also, 100% I've found it hard to make close friends here. I'm older and without kids, so I feel like it's hard to find people in the same stage of life that have the time to put into making a new friend. I find it easier to make what I would call "work friends" here, and I just try to enjoy my time with them around work stuff, but it doesn't often translate to us doing things outside of that. But there are so many things that I love here, I'll definitely be staying for now!
Indeed, I think people think moving overseas is a cure-all for their problems, but every country has their issues, and making friends is hard as an adult. That said, Im with you in that I love New Zealand and absolutely plan on staying here!!!! Where are you in New Zealand?
I know what you mean and I am a New Zealander. Found that in Australia, but only through shared interests- a group can make a difference? A couple of friends through work- but just a handful. The rest were low brow.
Why would anyone in their right mind want to move to New Zealand from the U.S.?… Maybe they are one of those crazy anti establishment hippie type who’s running away from something but they will learn very quickly that Kiwiland is not where they want to be!… Hell, even the Kiwis themselves don’t want to stay there!
as a kiwi i think it is hard to make close friends, my friend group is mainly friends from intermediate school. But if you can find a common group like hiking, or bouldering, or something might be a good way to make friends
yayyyy! Glad you liked it! I loved making this one. Was cool to think about what its been like living here. Can't wait to have that Kiwi passport in my hand! I have a few land based adventures coming up while I travel to the USA (next week!) and then back to some sailing!! I hope you're well. Thanks for following me over, genuinely. :-)
Hello!! My name is Isabelle, I'm 25 years old, I'm from Brazil, and I'm saving up money to do a 6-month exchange in New Zealand! I really want to live in the country! I was very happy to find your channel!
New Zealand, or at least Auckland, is very clique-y - it's hard to make friends outside work, realised this when I moved to NZ back in 2016. It's alright, who needs friends when you have back-breaking mortgage repayments.
I would agree with this unfortunately. it's so hard to make friends unless you do it through the expat community. That said, once I made one kiwi friend, the rest were easy. I think part of that is also stopping the criticism of the culture. I see a lot of Americans who have jus arrived and they are complaining about everything in every conversation, and while they think it is just friendly banter, it's actually subtly demeaning and not fun to be around. Not everyone does it of course, but I have seen it. 💜
I grew up in a city but in my early 50s moved to small provincial town. I found it very hard to make friends but got involved in local groups a d them started to connect. There is a hesitation to invest in FRIENDSHIP if you think the other person is an itinerant. My oldest friend is one I met in the first year of school 78years ago and we are the brothers we never had.
Love this! Not sure how it ended up in my recommended as I am a Kiwi who moved to Australia over 20 years ago (but thank you UA-cam). Even countries as similar as New Zealand and Australia - it was the same 'unexpected' learning for me.
@@TheAudaciousPath My then-boyfriend (now husband) parents had moved to Australia a few years before, so the idea was to spend a bit more time with them. It was supposed to be a temporary move for a few years - but the years have a way of getting away on you. Early on we hung out with other kiwi's but over time you do end up making friends with others - it was very slow though.
Yup, that is my experience too. Was unexpected to stay, but now it feels like home. That said, I do have this thought growing in my head to head that way for a road trip at some point once a major surgery is done!

Thank you so much for this lovely review. I supppppper appreciate it, and I am so glad you found value in it! If you think of any follow up topics, sing out, as I'm thinking to do another one like this!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
All true! Good job. I'm more surprised you're at my local park when there's so few people. So right about not getting a summer this year. Doesn't help with mould in homes. I'm glad you're here. Mānawatia a Matariki 2023.
Thanks so much!!!! I went mid day during the week, so maybe that’s why. Hehe, it’s such a random experience with the animals there, but I love it. Happy Matariki to you too!!!
Just came across your video. Thank you for the amount of content, your style of delivery, and last bit absolutely not least, your decency in supporting Ukraine. With the already high housing cost, I wonder what it would cost to have some R40 and an A/C unit shipped in, purchased elsewhere, and the labor to install them and put the walls back together?
Heya! Thanks so much for the kind words. I’m not sure what you mean by R40, but in terms of ac units, they have the same systems as the USA, but the cost of electrics to run things is astronomical. My power bill more than doubles over the very cold and very hot months when I am heating and cooling. Does that answer your question? 💜
Hi ,me and my husband is planning to study in New Zealand. We’re currently living in the Philippines. Love watching your video.. it answered most of my questions about what is like living there.
Very common I’d say. I don’t think most people can afford to live alone unless they are a couple. Trademe.co.nz is where most people go to find roommates. 💜
I love this video! However, please remember you're talking about *Auckland/North Island* a lot of the prices, etc are much lower in the South Island. I do get what you say, though - I'm planning to move to Quebec in a couple of years to be with my partner, because house prices are so high here. However, the grocery prices were higher there for produce coming into summer than they are here in Dunedin, NZ in winter (especially taking into account the exchange rate). Anyway, 'welcome home' (in the words of Dave Dobbyn!), and I'm glad to have you as one of us ❤
Awesome! I am so glad you enjoyed it! I totally get what you're saying about prices. that said, when I sailed about Marlborough Sounds and Akaroa areas, I found prices to be much higher than Auckland in terms of food. Housing prices were definitely lower, but so was income! Is your experience that buying power is still higher on the South Island? Hoorrray on the move! At least you're moving from one cold place to another. Definitely give yourself plenty of time to adjust before making any decisions on whether or not to stay! Making friends as an adult is no joke! Thank you thank you for your kind words!!!!
I lived in Quebec sometime ago. The people are wonderful, Québécois is hard to learn, old French, very guttural and full of slang. I was working on a farm not far for Joliet. Hated the snow and the wind that blows right through you. Never been so cold in my life. Wishing you all the best, l know you will fit in well having a partner to help you settle.
The friend thing is interesting, I've been here 20 years and haven't found it easy to make real friends with Kiwis. I thought it might be a provincial thing, but youre in Auckland. It helps if you play sport!
Indeed, I have made friends through rock climbing and hiking, but they are all expats! The only Kiwis I've met are through Amnesty International and dating! 💜💜💜
Some places just aren't home. That's also a reality. I think both can be true, and its up to each individual to discern if they've given it a real shot. Sorry to hear that by the way. I love Colorado and its the closest state I ever felt to home, but still did not feel the same as New Zealand.
I'm moving to NZ from the Netherlands this September and I've been feeling anxiety lately about being lonely while I'm there. In search of some preparations I stumbled upon this video and I truly enjoyed it. Also made me tear up a little bit. Finding friends in your 30's is hard. Do you have any tips on how to go about it the best?
Heya, I think being aware that loneliness is inevitable is the best way to help yourself adjust. Prepare for that. Let your support system know. Also, I am so glad you found value in this video. 💜💜💜
The good thing about NZ is that there is so many solo travelers there (I think aha) so there is more opportunities to meet people in the same situation. I am probably going there late september too so feel free to get in touch :D
@@jeromemenoret1421 There definitely are a lot of solo travelers, but they are young. The travelers in their 30s are all couples from what I've seen. Late September is a great time, but still rainy! It starts to warm up around November. You'll definitely miss the traffic of travelers. So excited for you both!!!!! I hope your experience is good!! 💜💜💜
Same! Once all papers are finally out (🤞🏼), this 30-yr old will be flying in to Welly from the Philippines and I’m only beginning to get nervous. aahhh! Hope we find good friends in the new upcoming chapter. Cheers!
@@pauaquino3950 That will be a blast! One of the MANY countries on my bucket list!!!!! Would love to hear your experience when you arrive! Sending you heaps of good vibes for the transition!!!
I loved the video. Thank you. I am a Kiwi by birth, but prefer to live "Stateside" in Melbourne, Australia, in the 'State' of Victoria. Have been here since 2008. Was back in NZ for 5 years prior to that, Then b4 that lived in Perth for 10 years. I would never live in NZ again, Aussie is just a better place to live and work. I will go back this year though (2024) to visit family. I am also an Australia Citizen and have been for 25 years, come Jan 13th 2024. I am glad you enjoy NZ, and if it's your place you like to call home, thats great!
I’ve lived here 20 years , nice home good business, but I’m returning back to the UK . The last ten years NZ has changed so much , not ranked right up there as one of the best places to live and with this co governance coming I can see even more problems, that is apart from bad housing , career suicide, rising crime, highest rate of homeless per capita in the developed world, huge drug problem , poor hospitals and education system etc etc, saying that NZ people are best I’ve ever met and I’ve travelled extensively, they are indeed amazing. Yeah it has great scenery but does lack any history and culture . I would certainly rent and just live there for a couple of years before just packing up and moving there.
Awwww, sending you good vibes for the move! That's a big deal!!!! 💜💜💜 It's interesting some of the items you have put here. My experience working in government is that some of these stats can be put down to the reporting. Having traveled extensively traveled around both NZ and the US (including recently), my personal experience is that NZ is doing better in most areas, and it feels safer in NZ. What's prompting the move home? 💜💜💜
Thanks for your video! It was really insightful. We are moving our young kids from SA to NZ in 4 months and we are trying to get as much info as we can on NZ. You have touched a few points that we needed to hear. Thanks
Awwww, yay! Im so pleased to hear you found this handy! Where are you moving to in NZ? What other questions do you have? (I may be able to help you!). 💜💜💜
Beautiful video. Keep it up!! 🥰 Been in NZ for about 6 months now. I’m from the US. This made me feel really comforted. I struggle to know whether to stay or leave. What kept you in NZ? :)
I feel that, and that is completely normal. I think it really helped that I have lived in multiple countries before living here so I had an idea of how it felt to live in other countries. I'd also lived in multiple states in the USA so had an idea of what was available to me if I went back. I think there are two things that ultimately made me stay though: watching the nastiness of the politics in the USA versus the elections here. While NZ and any other western country have a lot of similar issues and extremism in their elections, I really appreciated how people interacted. Generally speaking, it is very important to build rapport with someone here before you ever discuss politics, so by time you get to that discussion, there is a level of respect established that allows you to actually HEAR opposing opinions. I don't feel we HEAR each other in the USA when it comes to politics. Very quickly after meeting someone, everyone throws out their political opinions and then decides if it is worth investing any effort in each other. Thats a generalisation of course on both sides, but my experience nonetheless. The other thing that convinced me to stay here was going through the medical system with an extreme medical emergency (my ex almost died). While I'll be honest that there were HUGE GAPS, miscommunications, and mistakes made, overall, it was WAYYYY less stressful than dealing with the US system. No paperwork, no talking to insurance. I can't emphasize enough how much that reduced the stress load. But you do have to be very proactive here and take personal responsibility for double checking things and doing your research. For me, that was less stressful than talking to insurance. Hope this helps! 💜
Cool vid. Glad u like it over here. Stink its been hard finding a group of mates. But if u are ever over in whitianga we can catch up for a beer or wine with my wife and I 🤙🏽
Heya! I love New Zealand! I can’t wait to officially call myself a kiwi! It was definitely hard to find mates in the first few years, but I’m lucky to have a solid group of friends these days! 💜💜💜 Absolutely will post on the community tab if I’m headed your way! I love Whitianga! I’ve sailed in there many times. :-)
Awww thank you! What a lovely compliment! I hope you enjoy the other videos too! And sing out if there is any specific topic I can address for you. 💜💜💜
I love your spirit, but that is not the case for me and most of the expats I have met in NZ. Of course, there is a lot of nuance to this, and it could just be our individual experiences differ, but I think being proactive about making friends early on is super important as it can take a while. 💜 Hope you make it back this way!💜💜💜
@@TheAudaciousPath I am actually in the process of immigrating. I hope to get my final green light in a month or less. I have a great job offer waiting for me. I am getting to NZ with an accredited work visa. I am super excited needless to say.
That’s so sad, I spent 2 months there in college in hostels and helping farmers it was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been, both north and south islands, this was 15 years ago, this truly hurts my heart!
Yeah i moved from germnay to Hawaii... it all took awhile to fet used to, find new fav snacks etc.... my best friend is a kiwi so love always learn more .... how does it feel to be so far away from all in a way... what are typlical.getaways... greetings from kost nothern polynesia to most south
Hehe, love that your bestie is Kiwi. They are such good people. I love loving here. It is all so unexpected though. Feels so far from home as my trip home (next week) approaches, but then it feels so natural to be here when the rest of year goes by. So far, Fiji is top of my list because the islands are just so magnificent. But within NZ, I’m a huge fan of Coromandel. It’s so close but such different terrain. Have you been to NZ? 💜💜💜
As an older expat Kiwi now happily living in Idaho (and soon Montana), I enjoyed watching this. Thanks for sharing your experience. Maybe one day I'll come back if I can live in the Bay of Islands 🙂 My accent is totally broken though, so I would expect some grief. As a twice immigrant myself, I learned a profound lesson once from a German immigrant to Australia. I was asking him whether he frequented the local German Club and he replied "I didn't come to Australia to be German".
Haha. I feel this so hard. Americans have no idea where my accent is from! But kiwis know I’m American right away. I’m up in Bay Of Islands these days. It’s wonderful! 💜
We're actually just considering moving down to NZ from UK as my partner got a job offer in Christchurch and our family - it's us two and our dog - could easily (but of course expensively) relocate now given the visas and residency status. Your experiences are very valuable😊. I lived in Germany before and in Russia and now in the UK and I would really love to move to nz now as we're getting older and older. But what people say about cost of living and how difficult it might be to find new friends and a new circle frightens me personally. It this everyone's experience ?
It’s hard to say if it’s everyone’s experience, but the way I think of it is, if you are aware, then it won’t be a giant point of contention when you arrive. Come to terms with it before you get here, and it will make your transition much much easier. And of course, your experience greatly depends on who you individually are as a person. I love it here tho! 💜
@@TheAudaciousPaththx for the video. I'm moving from Sweden and I feel that new zealand is the exact copy of Sweden. It's social struggle and depressive good looking environment with a cost of living stress. I think it's a good idea to contact me somehow maybe we can build type of supportive friendship relationship as we expect and need to have in a country that's not ours
Not too far from me! Indeed, I love this country, albeit I am realistic that it is t perfect. I just posted part two to this video this morning! The Reality Check: 7 years in New Zealand (almost a citizen!) ua-cam.com/video/ZdqjfiyTnkc/v-deo.html

I moved up to Auckland to study 10yrs ago and then 4 yrs after I moved my old neighbours from my home town that use to live across the road from me moved two doors down from me, I was shocked going what are the chances, but here in NZ they are rather high
Being a New Zealander I think your overview is pretty realistic. My girlfriend is from Newww Yorrrk so I get to appreciate the great aspects of Americans and you are a good role model for the USA. Keep up being you. Kia tu kaha, ki te korero.
Welcome, and congratulations fellow New Zealand citizen! Honestly, if you've been here longer than 10 years, you're already a Kiwi, with or without the papers. Glad to have you on board! As a born and bred North Islander, I'm not too proud to encourage... nay, _implore_ you, to get to the South Island ASAP (in that statement you can read into some interisland rivalry, which by now, you'll understand is mostly related to sports, especially rugby). Show younger you that all the images of NZ's mainland that she put together can never do justice to the real thing. It's not perfect here but everywhere has troubles. It all comes down to which places' trouble is easier for you to deal with. All the best to you, and to anyone who finds your content helpful in making life choices about moving to, and living in, this little slice of paradise tucked away in the corner of the world.
Thank you so much! I technically have another 6 months until I qualify to apply, but I will have my application ready to go as soon as I can!!! I have plans to see Milford this summer. I’m actually doing a whole road trip with a friend this summer for three weeks, so some good videos to come!! 💜💜💜
Heya! Thanks so much! I am so pleased you enjoyed it. I suspect what's missing for people to subscribe is a big overarching goal that we are all working towards, so that's something on my mind to try out. I appreciate the encouraging words! 💜
That was a bad ass video. Epic. How old were you when you moved there? I’ve lived in the States and now Thailand where my family is from but thinking NZ is next on my list.
Awesome. Thank you so much!!! I loved to Nz in 2016, so in my adult years. I love the diversity in where you have lived. Variety is the spice of life, aye? 💜💜💜
Found it easy to make friends there. I left b/c there were limited career opportunities, hard work wasn't rewarded (low salaries with lots of unpaid overtime), and there was some prejudice at the office if you weren't Kiwi or English in terms of promotions. Weather wasn't great compared to California but better than England. Auckland is kind of boring and spread out. Nice to visit for nature and hiking though.
I so hope you make it out here! It's amazing! If you sail here, make sure you do the trip south. Most sailors never do, but having done it, I would say it's worth it! That said... apparently anyone who learns to sail here first is crazy! haha. 💜💜💜
I thoroughly enjoyed your video, sharing with us your experience. I would love to move to New Zealand but in the country, I do not know if there would be any work there but I would prefer the country more then the city.
So glad you enjoyed the video! Can’t verify this absolutely, but I’ve heard that finding a job in the country is one of the things that gets you more “points” when applying for a visa in NZ since most people find jobs in the city. 💜
@@TheAudaciousPath oh wow, ok I should just try. I want to take a leap of faith and move beyond my comforts and particularly explore the possibilities, exposure and rich experience life in general has to offer.🙏

Sorry, it’s not “the only other fur that does not freeze!” Wolverine fur does not freeze. Since time immemorial, wolverine fur has been the preferred material for hoods-trim in the High North.
Heya! I had a wee double check of these facts, and it seems indeed, Wolverine fur can freeze. However, various features of the fur make that very unlikely, hence a common belief that Wolverine fur does not freeze. 🥶 💜
@@TheAudaciousPath Cool!!! Glad you enjoyed this small piece of land between two giants. Keep rocking in NZ. Spent one year over there and i absolutely loved it. Do a favour to your soul and travel as much as you can all around the two islands. I can give you some tips and places to visit if you need inspiration. Best regards!!
Hi Daniella, enjoyed watching your video! Its very informative and interesting, insightful. I have been thinking for a long time now of moving to New Zealand for 2 years to begin with, single guy, no kids nothing that is holding me from going. I grew up with my grandparents on Vancouver Island Canada i love Van Isle. Its my home however i find overall im looking for a change in everything and weighing out a pros & cons list to it. Everything i love to do as im a everything putdoors guy i ski, kayak, trail run, bunjee jump / sky diving is on the list too! I do it all! Here in Canada everything you could want is here. The downside is new zealand doesnt have great health care then it seems? If you ever needed to see a dr. Canada thankfully because we are covered by medical plans paid through our taxes we can go to a walk in clinic to see dr.s any time thankfully without any charge. Im not sure how New Zealand is for that? I know overall it is a wonderful country and to not worry much about things there because it is overall a very safe country and the people are lovely. Any advice or tips you do have are much appreciated!
Heya! First and foremost, thank you very much for the kind words, and I am so pleased the video resonated with you! The public health care system is designed to cover emergencies. It is slightly overwhelmed, and the care is good, more or less so depending on the issue. As an American, I find the care to be on par, but the element of being covered by taxes and having no bills was HUGE for me. That said, I supplement the system with my own private health insurance. Many decide not to do this, but I think I would recommend insurance if you can afford it. If you cannot, I think the system is sufficient and the care is still good. I'm thinking about doing a video comparing and contrasting adventure activities available in the USA versus New Zealand. Interesting to you?
Interesting video but I think your points are a bit Auckland centric. New Zealanders don’t even want to be there. Go to smaller towns and friends are easier to make. It’s true the further south you go, the friendlier the people.
I hear you, and you're not the first to say that. I can't speak for my own experience as Ive never lived outside of Auckland, but what I see on the expat Facebook groups is that its even harder to make friends in the smaller towns. That said, the exception is expats with kids, as they are able to meet other parents through their kids. 💜💜💜
So I’m 16, turning 17 in a month, and I want to be moving to New Zealand AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Can anyone give me some hints or tips on how to move as fast as possible? This is kind of an SOS thing for me, cause I live in the US.
The working holiday visa will be the easiest way to get here. Biggest obstacle for most people will be to have enough money in your bank account upon arrival ( a visa requirement). Check out the NZ immigration website for details. Best wishes. 💜💜💜
@@TheAudaciousPath thank you so very much. I’m gonna be doing some more research and making sure I’ve got all I need. Also, cause I forgot to mention it, I really enjoyed the video. Thank you.
I moved here 20 years ago and unlike many people, I regret it. I think it is because it is just is far away from Europe where I come from and I have not been able to visit my family very often due to cost. While I definitely gained in some ways , I feel on reflection I actually lost more. I have struggled to make friends and have never really felt my heart was here. I feel like I am caught between two worlds.
I feel that. It's not for everyone, and having lived in 6 countries throughout my life, none of them felt like home until New Zealand. Maybe you just haven't found your home yet. You deserve to be happy. Trust yourself. 💜💜💜
Hey there! Thank you so much for this video. I'm moving to NZ from Argentina in October. I felt related to aome experiences you had in the past because i lived in 3 different countries and NZ it's gonna be a totally different experience so I have a lot of things going on my mind. I hope I can make some friends and get in touch with locals. I've seen that you visited Argentina too I hope u enjoyed here. Te mando un abrazo 👏
Heya! There is a huge Argentina community here! I’ve been to some parties a few years ago, so once you find those communities, I think it will be so much easier to find friends. Indeed, I lived in Uruguay for a year in 2009(?) and went to Argentina a few times. I even learned Tango! Sending you big hugs for the move! Give yourself time to adjust. 💜💜💜
My biggest gripe with NZ, that I never hear anyone mention (maybe it’s only bothering me this much), is the relentless and omnipresent WIND! So many awesome outdoor activities here were made far less enjoyable because of it. Nevertheless love NZ and don’t regret moving to this amazing country.
@@TheAudaciousPath Haha absolutely spot on. Always check the wind first! I’m in Christchurch and find the weather quite mild all year round compared to my home town but sweet Jesus is it windy! Lol
New Zealand is a country where you can buy Citizenship, yes. THere are numeorus countries where you can. A wonderful showcase thanks, from a fellow Kiwi and Aucklander living in Melbourne.
Not sure if you are implying that I bought citizenship, but having worked with refugees for many years, I can tell you that the system is most certainly biased towards money, good health, and high education. Do you think you’ll ever come back? I’ve seen a big wave of people leaving after COVID. 💜
@@thedappercook I forgot that I mention Peter Thiel! But yes, it is very much biased. I appreciate the accountability that a small country has required of people. I can imagine as a kiwi, it may have driven you crazy when the judgment was wrong, but coming from a place with limited accountability, I think it keeps people kind and humane. 💜💜💜
Heya! It depends if you mean the region with the most sunny days (Napier) or the region with the most days that are warm (Gisborne) or the region with the warmest winter (Northland). Honestly though, the biggest issue is finding a home that is insulated and has double glazed windows so you’re warm inside. It can be only a little cold outside but it’ll feel freezing if you can’t keep your home warm. 💜💜💜
I am planning to move to NZ to study Master of Marketing from University of Otago, am i making a right decision. My plan B is studying Msc in Luxury brand management from france. I am confused between the two, NZ seems like something where i would live permanently and seems possible whereas france looks very dicey. My long term goals do include living abroad. A kiwi or a french could help me out here😢
Heya! Unfortunately I can’t answer this for you, only you can, but I think it’s important to get real about your expectations. I’ve never been to Otago myself, but I know it’s one of the colder places of NZ. The University is know as a party school. There’s a lot of history there. Trying to think what else I know, but I hope this helps a bit. 💜

Cool video! Lived here for a year in 2015-2016 before returning home to Canada. Think about my stay nearly everyday. Would love to spend the rest of my days here I just found it so expensive and overall quality of life financially wise way down. The CAD currency is worth 20% more and my same profession in NZ paid me $50,000 NZD less than what I would have earned in Canada. Obviously this will vary greatly as to which country you come from and what your profession is but for me it just kinda scared me looking into the future. If I ever wanted to return to Canada in the future I instantly would have been in a bad spot. I feel like if you're coming from North America you need to be coming with a ton of $$ or you need to be all on commited to your move for the long haul lol.
Indeed, great advice about committing. It’s so hard to know if it will be a good fit until you arrive, and it also depends on where you are coming from. For me as an American, yes, I make significantly less, but I also get tons of public benefits I don’t get in the states. I also really just agree with the culture here, whereas I found myself misaligned with a lot of US values. That said, I’ve never lived in a perfect place, so you just have to choose what’s most valuable for you. 💜💜💜
@@TheAudaciousPath We're all not around for forever so its 100% important to spend your time where you are most happy. I plan on hopefully returning one day when the time is right. I've traveled a lot and it's the only place that's constantly on my brain. It definitely takes a special person to make the leap because you're really detaching yourself from the rest of the world. Although it has everything you would need and then some its location is pretty isolated. Contacting people back home can be difficult due to the time change. I'm from Eastern Canada so literally the other side of the world. I was in my early 20's when I went so it kinda sucked at times too meeting people you really liked but they were moving on eventually back home as well. Best of luck on your stay! Enjoy every minute. Super jealous 😂
@@jared2232 yup. All truths you write here. For me, my biggest tie here is my values align. But also, my whole family is spread out, so where would I go to in the US anyway!?
@@TheAudaciousPath oh I see, another question if you don’t mind answering… is it legal to live off the land (in the wild) in New Zealand? And is it legal to build a house somewhere far and isolated? like on a hill or something?
@@AriesLantzer I know it was legal to live off the land in some parts of the South Island in the bush, but the laws around this are quickly changing. Most land is owned, a lot of it by the Māori, and to the best of my knowledge, you always need a permit to build a permanent structure. 💜
Since there is big immigration, a lot of my friends are immigrants, too :) And coming from Germany.... I can tell you finding friends here is a walk in the park compared to the northern Europe countries :D
Having lived in Finland, I can second that. 😳🫶 In a different way though. Finnish people are just so quiet compared to Americans…. But when June came around, BOY! The whole country came alive! 😅💜
Thank you for this comment! I grew up in Germany and England. I'm about to over to NZ on my own and through this video and many comments I got scared not to find any friends..
It’s both a good and bad thing. Having been flown to Hamilton for a hospital visit, I much rather the quick access of the nearby Auckland hospital. And there’s tons of sailing opportunities here. But yah… plan is to get out of Auckland as soon as I can. 💜💜💜
We are moving there soon from Colorado is it really that hard to own a home? My wife will work there but i still will work in the U.S since i work for an airline. We’re excited and our coming there with 5 dogs! Can’t wait!
It depends on your income level, but he really, yes, it’s hard to buy a home. I believe you have to be a resident before you can buy property, you’re generally looking at 20% down minimum (unless you qualify under a few schemes for low income or first house), and the average house price in Auckland at least is over $1million. For most people, it’s pretty unattainable. That said, there are still hubs of NZ with reasonable prices if you don’t mind living more rural. 5 dogs! Oh my! Sending you positive vibes for the transition. Give yourself a long time to mentally adjust. 💜💜💜
Hi, sorry, this is beyond my scope, but I recommend you check out seek.co.nz for job opportunities and the NZ immigration website for visas. Best wishes! 💜
Awww, thanks so much for your kindness. I moved around for years hoping happiness would find me in one of the spots, but reality is, I had it IN me all the time. 💜💜💜
Hi I am an American kiwi now in Houston. Great video and congratulations on your move. I got a close American friend in auckland and i shared your video they loved it. Just a hint at 6.49 mins on your video you show your street name. I would edit that part out, good luck in Nz :)
I've lived outside of NZ for 12 years now and I've come to notice that kiwis have a different work ethic to other cultures. When at work, kiwis work hard and fast so a lot gets done in a short amount of time. It's the only way to justify a lot of time off I guess
That’s true from what I’ve seen. The kiwis I’ve worked with are very particular about what work is worth their time. Less time on admin and bureaucracy. That said, I think part of it is the privilege of being from a small country with smaller businesses, and then by time kiwis go overseas, that work ethic is in their DNA. Hope you get to come home sometimes! 💜💜💜
Yah? I do have a friend who moved to Auckland from Opua, and they say the same. But I think kiwis who stay out in their same place of birth have strong friend groups.
@@McfreddoI’m thinking to get over that way at some point! 💜💜💜

@@TheAudaciousPath wow, and I thought this was specific to my expat community. Take my sub and defo keen to see more vids.

What do you think of small-town life? I am the other way around... grew up in a small town and moved to a city! I miss the countryside heaps! 💜💜💜
Love this! Not sure how it ended up in my recommended as I am a Kiwi who moved to Australia over 20 years ago (but thank you UA-cam). Even countries as similar as New Zealand and Australia - it was the same 'unexpected' learning for me.
Yah? That surprises me a bit, but also, I think any big love takes a while to adjust. What prompted the move?
@@TheAudaciousPath My then-boyfriend (now husband) parents had moved to Australia a few years before, so the idea was to spend a bit more time with them. It was supposed to be a temporary move for a few years - but the years have a way of getting away on you. Early on we hung out with other kiwi's but over time you do end up making friends with others - it was very slow though.
Yup, that is my experience too. Was unexpected to stay, but now it feels like home. That said, I do have this thought growing in my head to head that way for a road trip at some point once a major surgery is done!

Awww, what a lovely thing to say. Kiwis are such lovely people! 💜💜💜
Hi! Great video. Question: how common are roommates? You know, to help pay the bills.
Queenstown is alot more expensive than most parts of Auckland so thats not entirely true.
Queenstown's a outlier in most ways though - I try to avoid it if I can. Everything is more expensive there
I lived in Quebec sometime ago. The people are wonderful, Québécois is hard to learn, old French, very guttural and full of slang.

I'm moving to NZ from the Netherlands this September and I've been feeling anxiety lately about being lonely while I'm there. In search of some preparations I stumbled upon this video and I truly enjoyed it. Also made me tear up a little bit.

It's interesting some of the items you have put here. My experience working in government is that some of these stats can be put down to the reporting.

@@MalenTopio we only get one life. Just make sure you are realistic about the adjustment period. 💜💜💜
Nawww Thanks for the Thanks 🙏❤
Loved this vid. Really great facts on NZ🎉
I feel you on the hard to get pet friendly rentals.and the other not so great crime rates......but still worth being this far away from the northern hemisphere 😅
I'm glad you stayed and I'm sure being just across the ditch, we'll meet soon!
Yayy! So glad you liked it! It was a fun one to make!
Ha, I have to agree with you 99% of the time, but I am super stoked to be heading home TOMORROW!!!!
Indeed, I am still considering a trip later this year. :-) 💜💜💜
You went to the Centenario stadium to see Nacional ? Haha, great!!! When did you visit my country?
I lived in Uruguay for my last year in university. I studied at Universidad Catolica. I loved living there! I traveled all around the country! 💜💜💜
Super interesting video!!
Heck yah! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!! I tried to be honest about my experience here! 💜
Thank you.
@ aww thanks. I’m glad to hear it. 💜💜💜
you from Colorado ?
I lived there for a few years before coming to New Zealand. 💜
Congratulations on your citizenship mate, all the very best to you both.
Thanks so much! I’m so excited to be able to call this place my home! 💜💜💜
this is so fantastic.
Awww yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed!
I love your videos and your spirit ❤❤
Dawww, thanks so much! I’ve been meaning to make this video for a while. Glad you enjoyed!!! 💜💜💜
What part of New Zealand are you in
I’m up on the North Island, Auckland, most of the time but often out adventuring! 💜💜💜
@@TheAudaciousPath weather there isn't so good is it I'm in Napier and we have just got the heavy winds you've had stay safe i enjoy your videos
Awesome video
Yay! Thanks! So glad you enjoyed! Coming here or already here? 💜
So accurate 👍 especially when it comes to making friends 🙈
Yup. Making friends as an adult is hard! 💜
YES! Indeed! I don't even look at the temperature really....I look at the wind speed!
yayy on moving here! Are you South Island or North Island? 💜
@@TheAudaciousPath Haha absolutely spot on. Always check the wind first! I’m in Christchurch and find the weather quite mild all year round compared to my home town but sweet Jesus is it windy! Lol
I've heard Christchurch has good weather, and surprisingly, Gisborne!!! 💜
@@TheAudaciousPath oh no I wasn't implying that, nah I won't come back, love that you love it though, very nice to see.
you haven't been to the south island its the best QED
I’ve visited Queenstown, sailed through the Marlborough Sounds as well as Akaroa. I know there is so much more to see though!!! 💜💜💜
Your awesome!
Aww thanks. Takes an awesome person to be so kind. 💜
I am contemplating moving. Your video helps. But can you advise where the hottest part of NZ is? I can’t stand cold
One day make a video only about this cute little dog!
Awww. Maybe I will. I got here here in NZ!!! Her name is “Pivo” in honor of my time in eastern Ukraine. 💜💜💜

P.S. What's your interest in New Zealand? Visiting? Moving? Working Holiday?
Good honest video 🙂 do you work from home or have workmates?
When I was working in humanitarian assistance, I worked partly in an office and remotely plus some time travelling to our projects overseas. Now I work for myself! 💜😁
5:35 caught me off guard as a Ukrainian person 🤣Also, your tattoo with herb is so endearing!
I lived in Donetsk Oblast for 2.5 years. Ukraine will always have part of my heart! 💜
My tattoo with "herb"? Not sure I understand here!!💜💜💜
@@TheAudaciousPath oh, the name for the Emblem of Ukraine in Ukrainian would be “herb” (“gerb”). 😉
I’m so glad to hear that you’ve enjoyed living in our country!!
@@shadowheart0 ah, gotchya, I did not know that. I got it in some random guys living room in Donetsk. 🫣🤣💜
Indeed, the friends I made there are friends for life. It is real sad they are now spread all over the place, and some I have lost contact for months now.
I really would like to move and live there but unfortunately I don't have a top skill they want.
I feel that. It’s not an easy country by get into without special skills or a job in advance. 💜
Hello from Germany
Hello from New Zealand! 😀💜
Colorado is very green, I live here
It was more green than I’d ever seen it!!!!
I have a question…
Is it hard to order things from outside of New Zealand?
It is! Mostly because the shipping is so expensive and half of my packages get lost!! 💜
@@TheAudaciousPath alright thank you sooo much you saved me hours of research 💙💙

I have watched so many videos about New Zealand, I found this the best so far. Will stop by your channel someday and explore more!
Thanks! I have a few more coming out soon. May I ask what resonated the most with you?
Sorry to hear your experience was in Auckland lol
It’s both a good and bad thing. Having been flown to Hamilton for a hospital visit, I much rather the quick access of the nearby Auckland hospital. And there’s tons of sailing opportunities here. But yah… plan is to get out of Auckland as soon as I can. 💜💜💜
Come check out Tauranga it's a beautiful place and lots to do.
well done!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed! 💜💜💜

It is a wonderful place! 💜
Hi I am an American kiwi now in Houston. Great video and congratulations on your move. I got a close American friend in auckland and i shared your video they loved it. Just a hint at 6.49 mins on your video you show your street name. I would edit that part out, good luck in Nz :)
Heya! Thanks a for that! Didn’t even notice, though luckily I don’t live there anymore, so all good. 💜
How you give advice on NZ when you haven’t been to the South Island ? The upper North Island is not NZ.
I've been to the South Island many times. Even sailed the South Island and circumnavigated the Norh Island by land AND sea! :-) So much sasss!
One day becomes day one... someday 🙏🙏
I feel that. 💜💜💜
I think the friends thing is even similiar for kiwis.
Yah? I do have a friend who moved to Auckland from Opua, and they say the same. But I think kiwis who stay out in their same place of birth have strong friend groups.
I like NZ ever day I make my plan in NZ as soon as possible
💜💜💜
New Zealand is in which continent?
New Zealand is said to be part of the Oceania continent or a submerged continent called Zealandia. 😁💜
