Our rain barrel is full but it's outside. If we lose power our neighbors have in-line propane heaters in their house and we have a propane heater too just a little less nice.

We are at -16 wind chill at 0 degrees. It isn't even midnight. High tomorrow is not even supposed to get to 20. I am worried about my turkeys. Praying!
You've made a lot of changes to protect the animals. You've done all you can do. We've had windchills of -37 to -44 all day. The hens have been happy and moving about the barn. 39 eggs today! I need to get out and snow blow again (Holly gets home around midnight tonight). We've got three-foot snow drifts across the driveway and it'll be brutal cleaning things up for Holly! Prayers for your homestead!! And for ALL of us worried about our animals!!! I've been working daily to tighten up my goat sheds & put groups together for body heat. Checked everyone this morning at -6° & found my 2 youngest doelings were outside having been chased from the building by more dominant goats! So I spent the day working on a metal 'hog hut' to tighten it as much as possible for these girls. Then I put a buckling in with them; he's been thinking he's 'hot stuff' (🙄) so I'm hoping it'll keep them all warmer! 😂 God bless to everyone & stay safe!!

I wish we could do more for them tomorrow during the day. I don’t worry about them tonight as we moved all 18 together in one coop but there’s not much I can do for them when they’re out in the run.
We never lock the coop but we did tonight. I have a heated waterer and a bucket of food in there and I'm not opening the coop until the wind dies down. Some people will add Vaseline to their combs to help prevent frostbite!
You got this ! As you know we are dealing with it and I am amazed at the resilience of my adult pigs. Smart shutting them in. I concur. Ours had thick frost on their backs and they did well….extra grain and hay and bedding really helped. Stay warm and safe friends!
There is an inch of snow ALL THROUGH my barn. Not kidding!! The only place where there isn't snow is where the goats were laying and there is snow on the goats. It must have all blown in from the upper ventilation in the barn!

@@SageandStoneHomestead it's-8 feels like -32, our little area made actual blizzard status😨 Our little pug wanted out he had 3 layers on. He did lots of pee in a very short amount of time and ran as best as he could back to the house, i wish he would use a puppy training pad but he has always hated them. I need to get him some goggles and little booties. I bet buster will as soon as he feels what its like outside he will think the inside ain't so bad after all
The care you are taking with your livestock is commendable and I think it is good to not be complacent. We are in Canada and yes, our animals are used to facing these temperatures on a regular bases, but as you said, your critters would not be used to it and adapted so to speak. These weather extremes are hitting harder and more often in our area as well, but for us it is freezing rain that we worry about with the animals. Oh no! I hope your pigs and bees all make it. We get regular -30 or -40 here in Canada- but our animals are used to it and acclimate. A drastic drop like you'll have is really hard, especially without a few feet of snow to help with insulating. Wind is hard too. My friend raises bees here and wraps all her hives- but the temp drop is gradual, not surprise sudden. Fingers crossed all your animals and plants make it through! 🤞 And yes, definitely keep an eye for pneumonia with those temp swings! We had crazy swings last year and silent pneumonia took a few of my friend's goats.

Do you have heat lamps? Heck if I had an extra room actually any room I'd bring in straw/hay and pigs inside. I know you'd have a mess but they won't freeze to death.
There's no way they'd successfully follow me into the house. We have heat lamps and I'll have some of them on for the goats. The pigs are bedded with so much straw I'm not comfortable setting up a lamp for them in fear of fire.
I wish it was that simple! At the moment I'm having a hard time even convincing Buster to come inside. Usually when I wield a leash he runs from me but I'm going to try to sneak up on him because it's just too cold.
