- A winter storm warning has been issued for our area. A power outage is a REAL possibility. In this video we are preparing our home for a nasty winter storm headed our way. We show you the exact steps we took today as we "battened down the hatches" and prepped so that we could stay warm in the midst of a possible sub-zero power outage and blowing snow.

I am your southern neighbor! Here just right and outside Kansas City Missouri with a wind chill factor in at under -14°! Please remember to keep generators fully charged heavy, heavy blankets on your bed, subzero sleeping bags if you have them and also please everyone remember to take care of your pets as well, and make sure that they are as warm as possible! If you have a fireplace Now, is the time to get it, set up and ready to use
Agreed! Thank you, Without Limits.
We live in the country about 45 mins west of you and have been battening down our hatches for the last few days. Lights flickering a bit but so far so good! Man, that wind is howling!
Oh my! Stay safe. You're right. Larry just opened the front door to check the weather. It's -11 degrees out there and the wind is definitely howling.
The roll of toilet paper on the side of the couch - love it! We do the same thing. TP usually cheaper than tissues.
Yes! That is exactly why it was there. I didn't even realize it was in the camera shot until after we were editing the video. I wondered if we would get any questions about it.
East Texas here...just some advice..please keep carbon monoxide Detectors in your homes along with smoke detectors ...with all the fireplaces, space heaters, etc best to be safe...also..hang light blankets or towels over windows to help insulate them...helps so much...keep safe everyone...
If you have kids, be sure to bake Christmas cookies for Santa now before you potentially lose power
True!
Very good idea
We're ready. Going to eat, drink and get fat for the next few days!😉
LOL! Good for you, Squirrel Covers!
Having just survived the big Earthquake in NorCal...we are so grateful that we were prepared for the emergency. Generators, gas for the generators, chopped wood, blankets, flashlights, power block, candles, water and food and a couple hundred dollars in cash...now restocking for the next emergency! It's not just a matter of "If" it's a matter of "When" are we going to have another emergency... that's life! Wishing you two a blessed Christmas and Happy New Years!
You were well prepared, H. It feels good to be ready. You have a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year as well!!!
Battening down the hatches here in Texas. We're about to turn off the water for the next four days to avoid any pipe ruptures. Nothing down here is built to deal with this. The wind is howling so loud outside that the dogs keep going to look out the windows haha. Thank you for the encouragement and information!
You are welcome, Rina. Glad you are making preparations.
It’s pretty much over in West Texas but still very very cold
I have electric heater keeping generators warm for easy start if needed
Wife totally handicapped and can’t walk
Not talking any chances at all
I watched this (and read the comments) with my jaw on the floor. To think that the entire UK just grinds to a halt each time we get an inch or two of snow, and then see what you folks do to prepare for YOUR weather extremes…hats off, people! I often say it but in this country we genuinely don’t know we’re born!
Thank you, Frugality. The US has pretty severe winters at times. We have to be on our toes.
LOVE that coffee was #1 prep👏👏🤣😂😭. PRIORITIES Larry, PRIORITIES! haha👍👌😂. Stay safe & Happy Holidays🤞🙏🎄🎅❤️
LOL! Thank you, Diane. We have coffee for sure this morning.
Looks like Vancouver! I just wanted to wish both of you and your whole family a very blessed Christmas & New Year! ♡ Jenny
Thank you, Jennifer. We wish the same for you.
How are you doing with the freeze? I hope you and everyone gets through this in good health.
So far, so good. The super cold weather will arrive in about 48 hours. First the snow falls and then the winds blow through for about 24 hours. By the weekend it will be sub-zero temps.
Just wanted to wish you and Larry a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stay warm and safe.
Thank you, Sandy. Same to you.
I follow storm chasers. This is going to be a bad one. Flash freeze warnings. I wish you had done this week ago. A great weather app called Radar Omega is amazing. Live TV coverage of the storm from them and their storm chasers Vince Waelti and Brandon Copic. To great people to give back to the communities affected by any sort of extreme weather event.
Hi Sharon. We actually did a video on getting ready for a possible winter storm power outage just last week. It's called, "How to Prepare for the NEXT Power Outage." Last year we did a two part series on Winter Preparedness. Hope this helps. On tonight's video Hope and I just take our viewers through some of the steps we took to get ready for this storm - mostly power related.
@@larryware1 Glad to hear. I love your videos. Guess I thought they were one in the same. Vince Waelti & Brandon Copics added to RO content about how to prepare & what to stock in your cars. Adding your knowledge how to source those products frugally would be great
@@sharons4611 - awesome!
We had - 46 for a few days. We are at -37 now. Ice pellets and -35 for Saturday. Stay safe xx Merry Christmas.
What a temperature plunge. We were at -11°F this morning. Very high winds - 50+mph. Merry Christmas to you as well.
As soon I saw your channel, I subscribed! I had been looking for this type of information. You two, look like two parents, giving advises. Thank you very much. BLESSINGS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!🎉🎊🍾🍷
Two items we have and give as gifts we got off of Amazon.
One is a bright orange, heavy duty, six foot telescoping, fiberglass bike flag, that many people attach to their bikes so they can be seen when on roadways. We keep them in our vehicles.because here in the Sierras with a bad snow storm that can bury a car, the bright orange shows up more than 6 feet above the roof of a vehicle so the CHP, emergency personnel, snowplows can see there is a buried vehicle or someone in need.
Last December I gave family, friends a Plextone Road LED Lighting, Emergency Beacon Safety Lighting Flashing Warning Light for vehicles that have a magnetic base so they hold tight to a vehicle roof, car door etc. They also have a flashlight, with a hook so you can hook it to the open hood when checking the engine. The different flashing modes warn of danger. We were able to see a friend a mile away, who had one flashing on the roof of her truck.
Excellent protection for travelers, Beth. Thank you for your tip.
I want to go to America one day. I'd looove to see snow!!! I am from Australia so dont get storms like this. What part of America do you live?
We live in the Midwest - Peoria, IL. We, in turn, would love to visit your country. I've always had a love for Australia.
@@larryware1 Well you guys would fit right in. We love Americans! Just know it can get to 47c in summer and thats 116.6 fahrenheit hahaha
Ace Spa, Australia gets snow. Went skiing (wasn't always upright) in Perisher years ago. Love the Snowy Mountains.
@@lynnettemurphy8243 Need to go there. Is that in Tasmania as havent seen it where I am.
Do not play with this storm. Here in SW AR at 6:30 AM 12/23/22 it is 7⁰. The wind is still blowing. Wind chill is -12⁰. This is not our usual December weather. We haven't lost power and I'm grateful for that, but I'm really grateful for my wood burning insert in my Fireplace with plenty of wood. Ya'll stay safe and warm!
Very true, Barbara! So glad you have provisions in place.
I prepared all summer for this. I've got hand sanitizer that I dumpster dough that I can set on fire . It does a wonderful job of heating I've already tested it all out I have some hand sanitizer that is suitable for indoors and others that are not the outdoor stuff I use it to boil water faster. So all my sanitizer is going to be used eventually. Why not it's free right?
I bought three pair of insulated coveralls electric socks electric gloves then I also have just plain old thinsulate gloves. The hat scarves the wool socks.
Now I'm probably going overboard with the way I prepare the house I always shut the water off whenever it gets below freezing here. Earlier this year I forgot to open a manifold and in the freeze cracked it that cost me about 15 bucks. But I got the replacement and now I have opened the valves on everything I drained every hose I could drain shut the water off from the source I've got enough water above ground to make it through.
I've been saving these ice chest I got a source where I can get these ice chest out of a dumpster and they're big ice chests they're used to send stuff offshore. I've got enough ice just to make a huge wall. But what I did with him tonight was I positioned them all around my car I have a hybrid so your hybrid batteries they don't really like cold. So to help promote longevity I position these ice chests all around the underside of my car to where no air can get in and then I place tires inside of those ice chest and that way those ice chests aren't going anywhere the wind will not blow them away. Fingers crossed that this does the trick and helps keep a little better temperature on my car. We're not once it gets freezing here we're not supposed to see above freezing temperatures for almost 36 hours and that is very rare for my location. We can go years without a hard freeze. We had a decent little freeze this year but before that it was 5 years ago that we had anything that we considered dangerous.
No I saw on the news those things going on in Wyoming Montana my prayers are for those poor people blizzard is no joke. And with the price of fuel these days there's a real chance that a lot of people can freeze to death. I've got the old fashioned go to a kettle and a hot water bottle if things get to worst. But as long as the grid is up I am enjoying my electric heating pad. I took a sheet and put it across the room and it helps segregate one air mass from the other in my small place thanks to that sheet I only need a 600 W heater to heat my room so far. I think I'm going to have to step it up as it gets colder and colder. No you're probably going to laugh right now it's 55° outside but the temperature is about to plummet like a Stone.
As a former truck driver I thoroughly enjoy grid tied life. I have absolutely no desire to go back to caveman days. I lived enough hard times driving that truck freezing my butt off suffering from heat all that stuff eating whatever the heck I could end up fixing with the time that I had so I can tell you I wholeheartedly thoroughly enjoy my grid tied life. And I want to enjoy every minute of it I can until the day I go. In essence I'm not a happy camper. Give me my room and my TV and Air conditioning heating and all that good stuff with some internet and I'm satisfied.
Make sure your carbon dioxide monitor is working! I can not imagine it getting that cold. San Diego girl, here gets cold at 65 degrees.
I don’t have a generator so it’s essential we don’t open the fridge/freezer if the power goes out, so I pulled out some meat, cheese, a quart of milk and put them in a cooler so we could access a few things without messing with the fridge or freezer. I also knocked down the fridge and freezer temps so that everything would have a few more hours before it becomes a problem.
That is such a smart idea to prep a cooler with items you commonly need so you don't have to open the fridge. Fingers crossed that your power stays on.
Here in Michigan, if our power goes out, the food in the fridge can go outside. I guess the screened porch would be our freezer, and the garage could be the fridge.
Blessed be, everyone!
@@OrlaQuirk that’s a good option too, but I don’t want the door opened any more than necessary in these temps.
@@bethanyg153 I don't want to open the doors, either. (Other family members, especially the dogs, are in and out all day). Your cooler as refrigerator idea is brilliant.
Your garage might be cool enough to store some foods temporarily.
We keep our bunnies alive at -40F if anyone needs some tips.......
I keep a electric heater between both generators
If power goes out easily start
When treat is over back to normal
temperature dropped fast! we have the storm windows in and the thick winter blankets for the beds. the small honda generator is ready just in case.
Super, Autobot!
Wow, glad I live in Florida! Yes. It will be very cold here but not like the north! We have a wood burning fireplace, blankets, flashlights and yes a generator too if needed. Have a wonderful Merry Christmas 🤶 🎄 😊 and be safe and warm.
Good for you, Koala Bear! Merry Christmas to you as well.
Our forecast for central NC is 10 degrees to 14 degrees on the nights of the 23rd, 24th, and 25th🥶 with wind up to 55 mph, giving a wind chill of possible -18. 🥶 Brrrr.
It is very unusual for my area.
I work every single night. 👌 I honestly don't mind working Christmas. It's kind of fun. The sick need Christmas cheer, too. 🎄 We usually try to give them some laughs with our crazy hats and singing/dancing.
Now, I have prepared as best to my ability/knowledge for this upcoming weather with safety in mind, generators (gas & solar), extra gas & diesel, food & water, wood for heat and cooking (if needed).
I look forward to seeing your video to give me extra tips in preparation for these storms.
How nice, R N. Those patients need people like you during Christmas. Sounds like you are as ready as you can be. Take care and be safe.
We have charged everything up, brought in firewood for a week, made a turkey, then bone broth, and made 2 loaves of bread for making sandwiches and 2 loaves of french breads for soup dipping. I chopped up celery, carrots, and mushrooms for a easy veggie tray. We put 6 gallons of water outside to freeze for backup ice in case power outage, we can put ice in refrigerator. We brought a cooler into the house that we can use if power is out as well. Drifting snow may make getting out difficult, so prepare to be indoors. Also brought in a shovel, and roof rake so we can find them ,and use the shovel to dig out with. Plan, prepare, and be ready to be flexible with your needs.
I want to come to your house just to breathe in the aroma of your cooking. Sounds amazing! Hopefully we'll be fine with the electricity tomorrow morning. I'm roasting butternut squash for several recipes on Christmas day.
Hey Hope and Larry, so glad you're prepped for this. Let us know you're OK!? No video required we just want to know you're through it. We love you here in the UK. Thank you so much for the filming.
We actually just finished editing a video about the storm. Our furnace died in the midst of the coldest of the weather. But, we were able to keep warm and get it repaired. I'll have the video uploaded in a few minutes.
@@UndertheMedian Well that's a miracle! Glad you're OK 😊.
We just got through the storm in Denver! 6 inches of snow and -25 windchill! Brutal. Left water dripping, space heated the basement and garage and covered up when outside! We made it and hope you do well too! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Good for you. Much better weather next week. This was quite a snap! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well, Nicole.

My father in law put heat from his wood stove down under there house So never gets cold under for pipes to freeze it's warm from the wood stove.
Good idea, that will certainly pay off.
where did you get the gentent from???? that is cool
We just finished a cold snap -15oc in the u.k. had a beanie on for a week! No power outage where I was. I had to keep my butter in my warm room.
I'm fully prepared, except for long time if no electricity. My apt is all electric. No balcony, no little buddy or power station. I'll do the best I can
Happy holidays
We love you 2

God bless you
Awe, thank you. Blessings to you during this special time of the year, lot Network!
It was 3 degrees and-21 wind chill here but I'm prepped. I have a big stack of wood close by. It snowed about two and a half inches. I have a cord of dry pine. It doesn't get cold in here. I added two more fire bricks to my wood stove so it has four now. I added an inch of insulation on the South Wall, which is actually the end of another building that's uninsulated. It's much warmer. I've been making the required coffee on the wood stove. It's going to be 1 degree in the morning. I would rather listen to my wood stove than your furnace and generator. It's 80 degrees in here. I have a 20 gallon barrel that I can put gas in Monday, after all the snow melts. My five gallon can has four gallons left. The little Honda engine on my generator starts first time. Usually get the rope out about a foot before it starts. I ran it through a charge cycle on the battery bank, and it took six ounces of gas until the inverter charger kicked out of charge mode. I just have a few pine chunks in the stove. It's hot enough to make some coffee on. I'm trying to use up the last of a fifteen pound tank of propane and then I will get the gas and the propane too. It's hard to use up the propane with the wood stove going. So it has lasted 3 months. I guess I can afford that.
Daughter call from Texas where it is 20 degrees windchill takes it to 5 degrees. It was at 5pm. Thank God I'm in Arizona that's all I gotta say. Mild compared.
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you, Beth!
Thank you for the interesting video.
Thank you, Colleen. Blessings.

@@colleenfromsydney4194 - thank you. We're staying home.
You all stay safe in Southern Illinois,
We are hunkered down here on Southeastern Indiana ♥️🎄
Thanks. We are watching the news right now. The biggest problem will be the wind gusts and the sub-zero temps after the snow falls. The actual snowfall won't be that much, but the winds will whip it around. You stay safe in the country. Honestly, at least there are a lot of big structures in the city to break the wind. Y'all have noting to block it.
I hope you and your family and everyone gets through this well.
I hope you and your neighbours will stay safe during the storm. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 🙂
Thank you, same to you, Trandans - Merry Christmas!
West Michigan is suppose to get 14 to 20 inches of snow, low temperatures, high winds, drifting up to 4 to 5 feet all starting on Thursday afternoon untill Saturday evening. Hunker Down, Keep Warm & Stay Safe Everyone.
Thanks for the tips Hope & Larry.
Merry Christmas to you and your boys.
Thank you, Mary! I'm sure this isn't your first winter storm. You are getting more severe weather than us. Stay safe! Merry Christmas to you as well!
I have an analogue clock from the 70's. Crazy orang/brown colour scheme. Still going strong.
How fun!
It's -10 outside but very warm inside because I am baking bread. Thankfully no power issues at this point.
What a nice way to spend the time. We've not lost power here either, but we did loose our furnace just after making the modifications. Got it mostly fixed yesterday....
Good job on this. I like the Gen Tent, never seen one of those.
Good luck with the storm!
Thank you, Homestead Aquarius. I've actually never had the generator outside running during a storm, but like have that on it just in case.
The wind has been horrible in Eastern NC. I think we may have wind tomorrow also

Ok you just reminded me of my radio I keep on the dash. Really love radio when power goes out.
I have never seen a kerosene pump before! We don't have them in AR.
It's unusual for sure, even in the Midwest. Only a handful of stations in Peoria supply kerosene like this. I had to do some extreme looking to find it.
Hope,Larry and Family,
Wishing you a merry Christmas. Hope you al stay safe and warm.😘👍
Thank you, Marianne. We're using the kerosene heaters now. Our furnace took a dive last night. A repairman is on the way this afternoon.

Come back in late March when the deep freeze is over.
I'm around the Joliet area and the wind is fierce right now. And of course my furnace is acting up NOW! 😅
On no, Lynne. Ours completely went out last night. We have power but NO furnace. We're using two kerosene heaters with fans to circulate warm air inside and they are working quite well. I hope you get yours fixed soon!!! Prayers.
I hope you both are doing okay. I hear about power outages as the result of this almost everywhere.
We have a blizzard warning where we are. It should start tomorrow morning. Right now there is rain but the temperature is set to drop 20 degrees and there will be flash freezing. Next, snow and 70 mile per hour wind gusts. We are right on one of the Great Lakes. Our little propane heater is ready ( it will be well ventilated), battery bank and all phones charged, sleeping bags are in the house and ready , and candles and flashlights are easily accessible. Now we wait. Stay safe everyone 😊.
Well its the 24th here now, we live outside the Capitol of Canada. We received the snow, rain, flash freeze and the strong winds continue. We are safe and sound inside with a back-up generators which runs of our natural gas line. We have also installed a special lock on our electrical panel which automatically closes the power supply from our provider to.ensure safety when we lose power. Merry Christmas!.
I'm in Ontario canada we are expecting a really bad storm. Schools already announced they are closed. I decided to cook my Turket tonight ( midnight here right now) I have a gas stove but they advise not to use oven but I do use stove top , so can make everything else later. I got gas for generators, I'll shut my main line water off if hydro goes out. I'll use generators for outside animals , my fridge , freezer and lights . Over a yr ago my area was hit by a tornado I lost 8 trees one on my house no hydro 3 days. Lesson learned..
Good for you, Kai. You are really prepared.
For people who have a well as I do in northern new your fill 5 gallons pails to use for flushing. We have gone as long as 14 days without power . Expected to lose power with this blizzard. Hopefully not for two weeks
That's a long time without power, Kathy. Very few would even be remotely ready for something like that.

Thank you Eddie. I got the idea from an electrical engineer friend who did this to his furnace. Then I found an incredible UA-cam video on "The DIY HVAC Guy" channel where he made the modifications to his furnace. I actually had the electrician watch the video so he would know what to do.

So sorry.
Thank you for all your ideas. I don't have all the items you have but you remind me to get together all the things I need together so they are available. Thanks again.
You are so welcome, Jan. Hope you get what you need!
We are facing the same storm here in Chattanooga! Down to 5 degrees tonight, and windy tomorrow.
I see something you may want to do and that's gets an exhaust that goes at least higher than your roof so that if you get a snow drift that generator will put that air above the area of the drift. Then again it might just be easier just to put the generator up on a pedestal. That would mean you'd have to climb a ladder to refuel if you're using gasoline but if you're hooked up to natural gas it wouldn't be a problem.
Thanks for that tip. We don't generally get that much snow here.
it hit -49f here in south dakota this morning with the wind chill
That's seriously cold, Redred. We're getting the wind blast now.
I bought that weather radio
Love it. Also what size wick does your kerosene heater take ?
The Kerosun Radiant 10 (shown in this video) uses a 504 wick that Amazon supplies for $18.59. I have 3 on hand for back up. They last about 5-8 years. They have to be brushed about every month to keep them clean and burning correctly. I have a wire brush for that purpose.
We are -21 right now,-34 this morning here in Butte Montana. Stay warm and safe.

You really should have a inverter generator .
Here I am at 46 years old and never having seen a kerosene pump at a fueling station. I googled this after seeing this and think we have a few places in Oregon you can pump kerosene but not many. Now I’ll be checking at gas stations 😂. You can buy it in jugs at like a Walmart I believe
We have a couple of gas stations in our town with dedicated kerosene pumps.
Menards sells kerosene in the cans but it's SO expensive to buy that way. We're so glad to have a kerosene pump at our local Hucks Gas Station.
Hope you and yours are weathering the storm, Merry Christmas.

You are REALLY prepared, George!!! Super. Well done. We are still tweaking our readiness. I might upgrade our generator next year to a 10,000 watt and have the old fuse box replaced with breakers and a transfer switch. There's always room for improvement.

Thank you Larry and Hope! I need to purchase a kerosene heater and generator.
You're welcome, Judith. We actually are heating the house right now with two kerosene heaters. Our furnace went out last night - bad gas valve. We found someone to come and repair it today. So nice to be ready. The house is toasty warm. Get those provisions, you will never regret it.
I’m moving from Cali, Los Angeles to Denver, Colorado. Do you have any tip on how to drive in the snow?
Keep a full gas tank for better traction. Drive slowly, allow plenty of stopping distance, don't tailgate the car in front of you. Put blankets, a sleeping back, flashlights, and some dry food in the car, a thermos of coffee/hot chocolate, if you might be driving out of the city during a winter storm.
#1 You must get SNOW tires. They have a symbol on them called " mountian snowflake". It is like a mountian peak. Tires with the symbol M +S are not snow tires.
#2 Windshield wiper fluid jugs that go down to atleast -20 C , spare wiper blades for that long road trip
#3 Maxx Trax or similar amazon knock off. These things are gold. My husband had used them to get 5 people pit of the ditch already. Self rescue ...no problem.
Thsi advice coming from Northern Alberta....we live winter for 6-7 months of the year. :)
Maybe get a small solar system for backup?
Another brilliant video.
Thank you, Cats eyes!
The tent for the generator is a great idea.
Have a very Merry Christmas
Cherosene pump??! Never seen one.
They are a little unusual. So glad Peoria and East Peoria has one.
@@larryware1 indeed that's a great asset to have easy access too. Never knew
I've been considering getting a gas generator for midwest storms such as this. I didn't realize that I would need to have an electrician/pay additional $$$ to be able to make power available to my furnace. Thank you for that information!.
How many gallons of gas does your generator require, and how many hours will that last? Thank you in advance!
The modification to the furnace only cost us about $235. We hesitated to give a cost though because ours was already set up with a switch. So, it was fairly simple for the electrician to add on the plug. But, you may be surprised at how little it would cost you. Larry will have to answer the gas for the gas generator question tomorrow, but I know it runs a long time on a couple of gallons of gas.
The tank on the 3500 watt generator holds about 2 gallons of gas and runs for 16 hours. I keep 18 gals of gas on hand for it.
Thank You, Thank You both for the information! I appreciate you!
@@truthseeker6370 - thank you! Blessings.
Did you plug the first power station into an inverter or is that a special type of surge protector?
Both power stations have built-in inverters. They both incorporate protective circuits. Let me know if you have any more questions, KLM.
Thank you!
Love this! And y’all two are such a great couple, thanks for the share!!
I heard in texas that you should let water trickle in faucet so pipes don't freeze. Is that true by you? Also, most cell phones have a strong spot light that you can use temporarily. 😆 I like the raincoat for your generator.
Let the water trickle is always a good idea, but ALSO open the cabinet doors under the sink so the room temperature air can get in there better. That helps more than anything else.
I'm in Houston, Tx and we were told if we live in the city not to let it run cause then the pressure may get too low and we will have a boil water incident. My faucet in my tub has a constant drip that hasn't been fixed so that may help right now. Lol
@@claudiagutierrez7218 what is water boil?
Jen Mv, a boil water notice is when you have to boil your water to kill bacteria before you can drink or cook with it.
Getting the same storm in Massachusetts, but mostly rain 57 degrees and 60 mile an hour winds. Then a massive temp drop to 20-25 degrees. Roads will be very icy Saturday. Power lines run behind my house and the electric co was out there today checking the lines.
