Seeing this makes me so happy!! Most hermit crabs sold by the beach are taken from the wild since they're somewhat hard to breed in captivity. The fact you're breeding them in a controlled and careful environment, as well as giving them appropriate habitats is so wonderful. Look at those sweet little babies~
This is incredible, Mary! More than 20 years ago, I was a founding member of The Hermit Crab Association, and my personal hope was that one day we'd learn how to breed hermit crabs in captivity and hopefully move them from being sold as disposable souvenirs on the boardwalk to REAL pets to adopt in a pet store! What you have done here makes my heart INCREDIBLY HAPPY! Bravo a thousand times!
God Bless you for all your amazing work on changing this industry. And also thank you for putting together this AWESOME video..It was so amazing and beautiful to see.. I sit here typing this crying pure tears of ultimate happiness..
wow! the conditions they go through and against all odds, in nature..for them to be plucked from their home for a painted shell. what great success you're showing! thank you for this footage
This is amazing!!! I didn't think it could be done. With all your hard work and your love for these guys there is now hope for these little creatures!! Your babies are adorable! Thank you for taking the time to start a captive breeding program for hermit crabs. It has been done for reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish, etc., so it's about time hermit crabs will get attention!
This video like a treasure for me, never expected there are captivity for Hermit crab, and never expected it would be so complicated and need very special care 😅
They look like tiny shrimps or lobsters! I never knew hermit crabs start life swimming around in water seeing as I've only seen them on land. So interesting
Absolutely in awe over what it takes to do this! Thank you for doing what you do. I've recently gotten into keeping hermit crabs properly after some failed attempts as a child waaaay before the time of the interwebs. Would so love to adopt!
Your work is so inspirational! Thanks to people like you I will never shop for these guys from a store again. Adopting is the way to go! Good work and good luck changing the industry forever!
This is amazing!!! You are going to change the industry and help protect the wild population of these underappreciated yet amazing little animals. A thousand cheers to you and your miracle babies!!!
Mad respect, I am trying to breed reef hermit crabs but so far they didn't even mate. It's amazing what you managed and more people in the hobby should try to breed mostly wild caught animals.
This is amazing! I just happened across your video when looking at videos of hermit crabs changing shells. I am very impressed with the work you are doing. I really hope you are successful & can have a fully functional breeding program where you sell to those beach shops & such that sell so many hermit crabs. I honestly never thought about "is this hermit crab domestic or fom the wild?" And i believe they should NOT take hermits from the wild to sell into captivity. Your breeding program is a way better option & it could potentially help boost the numbers of hermi crabs in the wild! There is so much potential here! A study has been done that say something like more than 500,000 hermit crab die each year in the Indian and Pacific ocean areas from trash pollution. Lack of shells means they mistake and use trash instead & sometimes become stuck, or the plastic leaches harmful chemicals into their bodies and they die. 😢😢😢 So i think hermit crabs just might be endangered one day, and they will need breeding programs to try to stop certain breeds from extinction.
Can't ❤ this enough! Such great pics and video here! Retiring the 20G long to the little so she can breed isopods but will be "taking it back" next year for a couple of your babies! They are adorbs! 🥰 Praying for all your babies and the CCS group too! Changing the industry for the better! 😁 #changeiscoming #onecrabatatime
This is really cool and thank you for shareing this video. I am getting the ich where i would like to get a few more hermit crabs, but i will not buy any more hermit crabs at all from where they sell hermit crabs, crab Central Station has taught me a lot and i appreciate all of them and all the help they are helping me with.
Just read your blog and it was so inspiring! Feel we could also try the method on some land crab species that are being captured for pet trade :D Will try that in the future when I have time
I honestly thought this was impossible. It's so impressive that you've achieved what I thought was unachievable! Like many kids, I had hermit crabs as a kid before me or anyone knew anything about hermit crabs. I did my best, but only managed to keep them alive for 5 years. Eventually I learned that in the wild they can live past 20, and I learned about how harmful the hermit crab industry is to the actual crabs, and decided to never keep them as pets again. Despite this I have still been learning about them because I find them so interesting, but I never thought the day would come when someone would manage to breed them in captivity. I hope that someday I will be able to adopt captive bred hermit crabs, and give them the care they deserve 🙂
Congrats on cracking the code to successfully breeding them! This is a huge step towards the conservation of the species in the wild, now that we can establish healthy captive populations for the hobby! Their collective sleeping spot is cute as heck. I also need to ask, what is the song that plays from 2:40 to the end? Can't seem to find it anywhere!
They are so cute I could die! An huh... for some reason I thought they couldn't be hatched in captivity. Or at least that's what I've been told, PetCo hasn't been known of being truthful with all their information regarding their animals.
I thought they couldn't breed, so if I have a girl and boy they will mate? I have a boy now and was going to get another one but I don't want babies as he came out of my creek to my porch...😂 Which we took him in also like we did baby turtle 🐢, my daughter is a lil Dr. Doolittle

Great job! I wonder, how many of the babies survived?
They’re adorable behaving like big crabs 🦀 living their best life thank you Mary 🥰
Found this video after a girl was talking about you on TikTok never have I been more entertained, they're so cute!!
Their cuteness never gets old. 😊

You truly have a blessed heart.
Thank you, Jo. ❤️🙏🏼
Little miracles! I love how they all pick different shells. Just amazing to watch. Thank you so much for posting this video!
Thank you for watching! :)

Thank you! Good luck with your attempts!
Forgot to add....the song is so appropriate!

Thank you! Adopters are just as important as breeders! It only works if we have folks on both ends of the venture. 😊

They are wonderful--and have done so much to help hermit crabs. :)
Love it!!! They are so adorable!!! You make it look so easy, Mary!!!

Thank you! 🙏🏼
How beautifu!! thank you Mary ik this video is old but still thank you so much!
6:57 I understand what you mean my hermit crabs are obsessed with Forest Moss
Amazing! So neat to watch!!!
That’s cool
That’s pretty impressive good job!
Such a miracle
They really are. 😊
That’s really amazing
Adorable beautiful thank you 🙏🏾 💕
Omg they are so sweet!!
I love to visit this video again and again. What is that last song, Mary? Thanks!
They are tooo cute 🥰
The larval stage looks like a 1 week old Betta fry
Congrats on cracking the code to successfully breeding them! This is a huge step towards the conservation of the species in the wild, now that we can establish healthy captive populations for the hobby! Their collective sleeping spot is cute as heck.
I also need to ask, what is the song that plays from 2:40 to the end? Can't seem to find it anywhere!
It looks like shrimp when fry
That makes sense, since they're crustaceans.
I am too afraid to Breeds them. It was beautiful.
Incredible!
How many larva reach adult hood
Usually about 1% of what they start with.
JUST AWESOME !!!!!!!
Wow cute
As a pet, does it need a hermit friend? Or they are fine solitary? And how long is the life spans?
My two large purple pinchers just had 1 baby reach juvenile life!!! I assume he’s 2 or so weeks out of the water.
That's amazingggg❤❤❤❤
AWESOME
What do the zoea crab eat? I’m think about breeding some land crab
I wonder what it feels like to morph and change like that I wonder if they remember
What do you feed them in their baby phase?
Foods designed for feeding corals, and loads of freshly hatched brine shrimp. 😊
@@maryakers1783 awesome, thanks for educating us on how to help these incredible invertebrates
Do you have to keep the water aerated?
They are so cute I could die! An huh... for some reason I thought they couldn't be hatched in captivity. Or at least that's what I've been told, PetCo hasn't been known of being truthful with all their information regarding their animals.
I love them 😭❤️
Are there humane ways to adopt them? Something like a rattery but it’s crab
What do you feed them while in the first 4 stages??? I have tons that were born but need to make sure they have food
were you able to feed them? how are they?
Where to adopt at bc I was going to a pet store 🤦🏾♀️
What's the 1st song called?
Amazing❤
How do you find shells that small for them
That’s one of the more tricky parts. A search for Sailor’s Valentines on Etsy will yield a bunch of good results. 😊
How can i adopt from u? 🙏
Josh’s Frogs has a bunch of my captive-bred babies for sale now. 😊
I thought they couldn't breed, so if I have a girl and boy they will mate? I have a boy now and was going to get another one but I don't want babies as he came out of my creek to my porch...😂 Which we took him in also like we did baby turtle 🐢, my daughter is a lil Dr. Doolittle
This is interesting. Hermit crabs aren't from a crab familia, their young stage looks like shrimps, no wonder why they are known as pseudo curstaceae.
I swear the hermit crab industry is intentional on you killing your crab Could you possibly make a video on the proper set up
Crab Central Station has lots of those videos. I highly recommend them. They are also captive breeding hermits. 😊
