I discovered that if some water gets into the bottom plastic container when you double them, they can stick together by suction. So I put some tiny pebbles or a couple flat shells into the bottom. Much easier to get the top one out.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!
Went to a new petstore (Not a chain store). And my daughter was in love with the hermit crabs... we had some aquariums in storage. I found 3 crabs that needed rescued on Craigslist, broke out the 30 gallon and set it up.... I thought hermit crabs were so easy and didn't need much... until I started researching lol..... IM SO THANKFUL I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL! KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO!! The hermit crab community needs you!!
It’s been an adventurous and learning filled 12 hours since my 8 year old got a hermit crab for his birthday from grandma. We’re following your PPS guide and I already have a stack of returns for petsmart :) thanks so much for what you do!
That’s so amazing! I’m so glad we could be helpful. Welcome to your hermit crab journey 🦀🐚
Lol. My daughter got one for her birthday yesterday, so me too! Heading to the pet store in just a little bit.

This is one of the best hermit crab UA-cam channels I’ve seen in a long time! Keep up the good work! 😊 we need you!!
WOW! What a humbling comment! Thank you so much! Welcome aboard the CCS train!
Keep spreading the word on hermit crab care!
Thanks!😊
Great info on our little friends,
So we watched both videos and updated our water tank. Bubblers were installed. We even went further to make water tank self contain eco system. We have living plants and snails. All living creatures are thriving and the crabs love it.
A year ago, we had sponges and shallow pools. We’ve come so far to give the best care possible.
Thanks again for your videos.
What a great testimony! Thank you for sharing! We are so glad our videos have helped you create a paradise for your crabs to thrive in!
The tank behind you is amazing! I just rescued 3 widdle crabs and your channel is the best I've found for information! Thank you!
Thanks! Tank tours are coming soon! We are so glad our channel has helped you on your hermie journey! Thanks for rescuing!
𝕊𝕒𝕞𝕖!
Awesome! We're glad we could help!
Craft mesh is regularly used for plastic canvas work which is where you cover the canvas with yarn using special needles & patterns. I have made things like crayon boxes, calendars, electronic organizer case, & a trash can. You can even use it to cover holes in aquarium lids to keep snails from escaping as i have determined they are all aquatic versions of Houdini & will leave when the want to. It's easier to keep my hermits in their tank.
Cool!
I’ve had hermit crabs since 7th grade. I’m 25 now. I haven’t had hermies in 2 years and I just have to get them again. I can’t stay away!!! I love them!!
We think they're pretty awesome too! Check into captive bred or adoption when you get ready to get back into the hobby 😉
If I ever get crustaceans as pets it will be because of this channel. Once I do, I'll make a comment like this.
You girls got me crabs!!! 😁
LOL! I love it!
I love this video!! It
makes so much sense, thank you for explaining! I cant imagine having really wet sand for my hermie’s to walk on 24/7 and I see this a lot.
We love you and appreciate you. You get straight to the point and do not him haw around.
Perhaps it's the junior high teacher in me! I have a short period of time to capture their attention and keep them engaged 😁
Waiting for that upgraded pool video like I'm waiting for spring! Some questions I already have: If you have a bubbler does the 48hr water change extend to weekly? How do you hide your tubing? How do you sneak the hoses into your tank and still keep it sealed for humidity? How often do they snip holes in the tubing? Gratitude for your time and sharing your experience and accumulated knowledge. I learn SO much from your channel. XoXoX JennaBean
Thanks for your support, Jenna! We have answers and experiences to share for all of those great questions!
This is so helpful! I rescued four hermies living in a 10 gallon off of facebook & have been trying to figure out ways to make perfect pools for them. They're in a 40 gallon & I'm trying to perfect their habitat.
We are so glad we could help! Your hermits are lucky to have you!
Prime completely removes chlorine and chloramine from the water. It detoxifies ammonia, nitrate and nitrate for 24-48hrs so in that instance you need to redose... but that really applies to fish. Thanks for all the helpful information, I'm really going to need it.
Thanks Pattie's Petite Tanks! Keep an eye out for our "Advanced Hermit Crab Pools" launching next week!
I am glad I found this UA-cam channel because I just got a pet hermit crab
So glad we would help out!
Thank you so much for spreading the word! ALL of your hermie care videos have helped me so much as I just got some at the beach! I didn't think how they sold them, and all the painted shells and stuff wasn't bad untill I did my research! Has helped so much, THANK YOU!!!
Awesome! Thank you, DHstevens, for researching and joining our CCS #CrabCrew
Little idea for you: Those water pools look like 5 or so gallon tanks. I think you could fit some fish in there and have multi-animal habitat. Idk tho. There could be some flaws with this like the fish not liking the hermit crab.
We are currently running some scientific experiments along these lines. We do not yet have enough data to recommend this at this time.
@@CrabCentralStation some people have reported that when a pool is nitrogen cycled like an aquarium, the crabs are healthier and more active. That’s why I’m building a 270 gallon tank with a 29 gallon reef tank inside
You are referring to the tank in the back ground. I was looking at that too. Would love to see the hermies from that tank. Do you grow your own chia seeds in any tanks?
Also, where do you place your thermostat? Near water bowls or op. Side from water.😊

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! We are so glad that our videos are helping you and that you are enjoying them 🥰
Prime only lasts 48 hours?? That can’t be right is it? How does chlorine get back in the water?
Yes how?
Copied directly from the Seachem Prime website - FAQ section:
“
How long does Prime® stay bound to the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates?
A: Prime® will bind up those compounds for up to 48 hours. If they are still present after that time frame, they are released back into the water, unless Prime® is re-dosed accordingly. Also, if your ammonia or nitrite levels are increasing within a 24-hour period, Prime® can be re-dosed every 48 hours.”
Did a little research on it. Prime does indeed remove chlorine/chloramine. If you read the copied bit, it only states that any ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates that will be re-released into the water. Here's another post from the website that clarifies: FAQ: How fast does Seachem Prime® work?
Prime® removes chlorine and chloramine almost instantly upon being added to water, and will immediately detoxify ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The chlorine and chloramine is permanently removed (they are broken down into a form that will not re-associate in water) and the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate detoxification lasts for 48 hours. If you are dosing Prime® specifically to detoxify ammonia or nitrite, you should re-dose Prime® every 48 hours until the bacteria colonies in the tank are large and stable enough to consume these chemicals.
I'm very new to hermit crab care. My question is.. if you're priming a gallon jug of salt water, won't it be bad after 48 hours? I have small pools, so I'd think the gallon method wouldn't work for me. Or.. could I reprime the water as I need it? That way, I won't waste the salt.
@@MDLady1965you don’t need to re prime that 48hrs is only in regards to aquaria where you need to lower ammonia, nitrate or nitrite levels within the water for simply removing chlorine, chloramines and some heavy metals dose the prime as recommended one time no need to re dose if you want to make up a bottle of saltwater you can and keep the bottle in a dark cupboard but the salinity and nutrient levels can decrease over time so I wouldn’t make more then what you can use in a fortnight
I have no idea how my crabbie has lived for 7 years because I have done next to nothing. Geez! XD Great video! I am preparing to give his living conditions a major upgrade and this helps a lot!
That's great! I bet your hermie will be super happy to have upgrades 😁
LIGHT FILTER!!! I have been looking for the name of that stuff. The mesh plastics are often found in the sewing section because it used for embroidering. The light filter screen will be great for a CLIMBING WALL BASE... ty Althea
Also called egg crate for some reason.
I got my crabs about a month ago and they’re not really active but I don’t have a heating pad and I think that might be the problem my cousin says they’re not necessary but I think they are one of my hermit crab died about a week ago it got out of it’s shell and he died I don’t know why I was feeding it really healthy food but also my parents said that they’re probably not gonna buy me a heating pad so I’m not sure if I’m a good crab keeper but I will try to keep watching the videos and learn more about my hermit crabs this video is very helpful in my opinion and thank you for teaching me more about Hermit crabs
They definitely need a heating pad. The correct heat and humidity will keep your crabs alive and more active.
Yes. I’ve done everything Crab Central Station has said to do for our crabs. I’ve had them since September and i have noticed once I got our habitat humidity and temp right they are much more active. Do what they say. It works!
I'm here because my child is currently in summer school and they are doing some lesson on hermit crabs. They apparently bought a few and at the end of the week are going to draw names (for the kids who their parents sign the slip for them to have a hermit crab) and send them home with the kids. I came to see what all we need if he does get chosen and I am soooooo overwhelmed! I never knew how much work goes into hermit crabs and now I feel so bad that they are sending these crabs home with people who probably have no idea either!!! I'm about to call the school because this seems so crazy and sad to me!!! My son is autistic and now he has it in his head that he's going to be bringing one home.... *sigh*.... I'm a single mom with 3 boys and this seems like a lot of work and money. BUT if he does get chosen I really want to be prepared.... I've watched a lot of your videos so far and have a good idea but these pools are stressing me out LOL!
I’m so glad you’re doing some research to learn more! It can be totally overwhelming when you start learning, but it gets easier with time. We would love to do a zoom video call with the class if they’d like! That may help the kids motivate the parents to do research too

I have a question about the freshwater source! My water pipes dont come from a shared tank or anything like that, its from a spring next to my house which is filtered through as it comes to my tap. Would i still have to use Prime on it?
i've been super obsessed with hermit crabs for SO LONG! watching your videos recently have helped me a lot and learn about what hermit crabs need 🥰 super excited to adopt some soon 😁

I just recently became a crab mama (my daughter's school gave her a free hermit crab) and you guys have the best info!! I am still learning and it's been stressful due to money but thank you for all the wonderful info you guys give! :)
Welcome aboard Crab Central Station! We are so glad our videos are helping you and your daughter as you begin your "crabby" journey 😀😊❤😄! Thank you for watching our videos and supporting our family! I just noticed that my branches actually soaked up water and leaching it to the sand! Thank you south for very informative videos! Disaster avoided!
Oh no! Glad you were able to catch that!
Question about adding Prime to declorinate water every 48 hours....why? Does the chlorine come back? My dad used to leave gallons of water out uncovered for his fish tanks because the clorine dissipated on it's own, then was safe for aquarium. Never used an additive for clorine.
The prime info you gave isn't true!!! I called the 1800 number. She said once you've added prime to water the change is permanent if it's stored water!
Love the beginning montageeeeee.😍
Thank you!
First of all, thank you SO much for your videos and this very informative channel! I have been a hermie momma for 4 months and I have truly fallen in love with my 2 little guys! Through this channel I have become a BIG hermit advocate and I would love to be more involved. (I'm new to LHCOS). I really wish I would have known how delicate and high maintenance these little guys are, but I have been hooked. I bought my littles at the pet store and was given little to no information which left me scrambling for answers as I tried to accommodate and improve. (I've gone from a seven gallon to a twenty and so much more...) I'm wanting to ask... if a crab has been burrowed for weeks with no sign of any movement in the tank, when is the right time/ proper way to know he hasn't passed away during molting?
Yay! Thank you for supporting our channel, but even more, for advocating for proper care of hermit crabs! As for your question, there really is no time line for molting. We just give them everything they need and then trust them to do their crab thing.
@@CrabCentralStation Thank you so much! What's incredible is I haven't seen one of my crabs in 4 weeks and I knew that could be typical but I was beginning to worry and just this morning he popped out with a beautiful new exoskeleton! Why do you have to prime every 48 hrs? Once you have treated the chlorine it should be good to go right?
I am so glad I found your channel . Thanks to you I am informed and can care for them properly . We have already upgraded from a 10 gallon to a 20 . we are now purchasing a 55 gallon and are going to make a amazing crabitat. I wish everyone would watch these videos . Thank you for your support!
I followed your directives on water needs. I got a Tupperware that they were able to submerge their body in, River rocks on the bottom, a ladder that allows them to go in and out of the pool, and have a salt and fresh water pool to allow them to get in and out. My husband woke up that night and one of our hermit crabs was at the bottom of the pool out of its shell. I think he is dead. My husband pulled him out along with his shell and he hasn’t moved at all. The hermit crab is limp. Any advice anyone?
I have a thing that takes out chlorine of fresh water but it’s for a turtle can I use that?
How long can a hermit carb stay under water? Thank you for all uour videos!!
I am huge fan , but I do have 3 hermit crabs in ten gallon which I really really want to change to 30 gallon.
Great videos. Thank you for all the information x I had a question. You stated well water is safe to use. Our is really hard. We don’t drink it but wash dishes and bathe. Is it still ok to use?
What if your away at work n can't change the water every 48 hours?
can you make your own salt water? safely? cause i don’t live near a pet store or a good walmart. i seen a video where someone made saltwater using sea salt and water
With the premixed saltwater, is it fine to just leave it out or must it be refrigerated ? Is it okay to just keep it weeks at a time in a sealed container ?Obviously it will need prime to be added though when added to their pools :)
Nicely done! Getting a hermie tomorrow, bc you’ve helped soooooooo much! Thank you!!! ❤️
Thank you! Yay for starting your own hermie journey 🥰!
Sorry...have to ask, prime only lasts 48 hours? Not sure that is correct. It removes chlorine, that's the "need" for it, after 48 hours chlorine doesn't just re-appear?
So I have a Tupperware dish as my pools with large rocks and crafting mesh. How often do I have to clean the individual rocks a x mesh with soap and water. I would once 1 to 2 weeks would scrub it all with soap and water and would rinse thoroughly. Do I have to do this every time or can I just give them dump the old water and put fresh? Also you recommended I ask for a UTH and substrate for Christmas. Well I did and I got my 48 inch by 12 inch UTH as well as a 8 bags of play sand. I now have about a 5:1 ratio of play sand to eco earth and 8 to 9 inches of sub!
Great question! Every 48 hours (2 days) rinse the rocks and craft mesh in water when you rinse out the Tupperware pools (don't use soap because soap can leave a film coating and that will be toxic to your crabs). Then fill up your pools with fresh water and replace in the tank.
Yay for Christmas presents that help your cabbies live their best life! Awesome news!
Can you not make a shallow pool and make an embankment of rock and sand leading up to the sand? Do you need an actual dish or container

How do I find you're heating pad on your Link
Is the prime necessary when using well water?
You say crabs need fresh and salt water.. but how is it that these crabs live in areas without freshwater.. I'm just asking.
There is fresh water everywhere due to rain. They have fresh water "pools" available to them in nature. They carry both fresh and saltwater in the shells at all times to keep their abdominal lung/gills moist. Without shell water, they will dry out and die.
@@CrabCentralStation I dont know. I live in a beach area and it hasn't rained in over 3 months.. and theres no fresh water pools nearby..
What do I do if I have a tiny tank but parents won’t let me buy another one

So much great information, thank you!! I always love to get a glimpse of your tank and how you've set it up. I was hoping perhaps you can do a video where you can actually give us a closer look at how you exactly set up your tank. I need creative ideas on how to maximize my space. Always feel like my water bowls take up 1/3 of my tanks. I have all kinds of materials & decor but NOT the creativity. Love your idea on the shelving. Will try to incorporate shelving in my tank in the meantime.
Glad you enjoyed it! We definitely have a video about this on our list!
I'm confused about needing to add Prime every 48 hours. I keep freshwater fish and I only add Prime when I'm doing a water change. I definitely don't add it every 48 hours! Why the need to do it so often for crabs?
Why do you need to use prime in the water every 48 hours? Also if you only have one crab and it doesn’t submerge in the water often and the water looks clean(no debris) do you still have to change the water as often?
From the Seachem Prime website; Prime will bind up ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates for up to 48 hours. If they are still present after that time, they are released back into the water, unless Prime is re-dosed accordingly. That being said, if you have only a couple crabs and they are small, the ammonia levels are going to be trace at best, and therefore you could probably get away without re-dosing every 48nhours. So much depends on the amount of crabs, size of crabs, size of pools, waste in the pools, etc. Since Prime says to re-dose every 48 hours.... that's what we recommend as best practices for the majority of crab keepers.

Thank you! We will have an advanced pool video out soon. Stay tuned!
Quick question. When my hermit crab are in their pool and they stay still and barely move. I sometimes feel like they are drowning.
The hermit crabs don't really "swim" like we do or like we might think they should. They fully submerge to clean out their shells (poop) and to refil it with water to keep their gills moist. Hermit crabs can stay under water for a good amount of time. However, they can actually drown so make sure that you have an easy way for them to get in and out of the pools.
I had no idea they loved to swim!! Guess who is running to the store tomorrow to build pools for her hermies?! 👀 Thank you so much for all the information!!

Can I use rain water instead? Will that help me not need to treat it?
Hi, I want to ask, you used 2 drop of prime per gallon, so smaller qualities. Can I use for freshwater 1 drop of prime for 2 quarts of tap water? Another question toward the saltwater measurements. I only have 2 quart pitchers, would the measurements be one drop of prime, 2 quarts of water, and 1/4 cup of instant ocean salt? Thank you! Do you have a Target? Or maybe you can order online from Target?
Seachem prime is also great for removing chloramine, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, & heavy metals. All of which are bad or deadly for hermit crabs & and many other aquatic, semi-aquatic, & reptilian animals. I use it to treat the water for my daughter's leopard gecko as they are super sensitive to the chemicals used to treat tap water for drinking. Also found out my city's tap water contains trace amounts of chloroform as a byproduct of using chlorine. I like the reef crystals because it adds minerals like magnesium & calcium to the water instead of just sea salt like the marine salt everyone else recommends for hermits. So I'd like to thank you for that. I also found a product for water treatment from seachem called jurrassipet hermit safe. It adds a slight amount of trace minerals to the water, & has sea salt listed in the ingredients as well. I've only used it once & I was afraid to put it in the freshwater because I didn't want to have 2 saltwater dishes (bowls).
This so informative thank you so much

We drilled small holes along the ledge that the lid sits on, then used zip ties to hold the greenery in place.
Okay, thank you! Your videos have helped me a lot! ❤️🥰
is a 20 gallon tank for two small hermits a good size?
Yes! That will be a great tank for them.
@@CrabCentralStation thanks for letting me know!
Can all hermit crabs submerge I’m nervous to get something deep
love your channel youve really inspired me and ive been doing a ton of research
i was wondering though, if i was gonna get some captive bred babies would there be a danger in having too big/deep of a pool, even with proper bridges in/out?
wondering about the viability of setting up the enclosure in a way to eventually support full grown crabs with only minor modifications as they grow
About the prime... Are you adding it every 48 hours just to the water you've mixed up or are you adding it every 48 hours to the crabs swimming pools too?
You can do it either way, add it straight to the pool every 48 hours, or you can add it to the water jug before you fill up the pool.
Some fishkeepers also let the water age for 24hrs to dissipate chlorine and chloramine. I personally don't do that I always use Prime and always will. Regarding the water...just room temperature is fine? Or just match the water to what it was? I'm sorry I'm adopting 3 hermit crabs tomorrow and I am quite worried because I don't know what I'm doing...yet.
Room temp/tank temp is great for your crabs. No need to by a water heater.
I'm trying to set up pools like those behind you in my tank upgrade. What is the white seal you have used around your small fish tanks pools? Thanks
It is weather strip for doors and windows.... but you probably don't need it around the top like we have it in this tank. The only reason we are using it is because we have captive bred baby crabs in this tank that are micro sized. They are so tiny they could slip between the edge of the pool and tank glass and get caught. We think of it like a baby crib bumper pad 😆
Can I use Aquarium salt? My petco seems to run out of the bottled saltwater.
You don't want to use the bottled saltwater. Reef crystals or instant ocean are great choices.
This is awesome!
Thank you!!!
Are you sure about the prime only lasting 48 hours? I use it for fish water. Only once
In filtered tanks, you do not have to add prime every 48 hours. In a standing water dish, you do.
I’ve read and been warned by a pet store keeper that the hermit crabs can drown and so I’ve been worried about it! Can they drown even if I provide a place to climb in and out?
No, they have modified gills and love to be under the water. Let them swim! They need to be able to fully submerge to collect the rate they need for a successful molt.
So we can premix a gallon of the instant ocean and let it sit until needed? We just need to hold off on adding the Prime until we are going to add the water to their pool? Or does the instant ocean also go bad after 48 hours?
You can premix the instant ocean and just add the prime to their pool.
@@CrabCentralStation thank you so much!!!
I’m setting up two 2gal pool (salt/fresh). For my salt pool, what substrate is safe for the crabs? I’m using the aragonite reef substrate by CaribSea. My dry/burrow substrate is play sand/coconut soil combo. I’m more or less concerned about the calcium in the aragonite. If it’s fully submerged, that calcium won’t hurt the crabs right?
The CaribSea sand is great for their pool! The calcium is actually really good for them.
Where did you get those bridges going into your pools in the tank behind you?
We got them at PetsMart
I have a question about the pool size for a 10 gallon tank with two hermit crabs! I have 2 fresh water pools and 1 salt water pool. The saltwater pool holds about a cup, one of the freshwater pools holds about a cup as well and the other freshwater pool holds maybe half a cup. Are these good for the 10 gallon tank? Or should I go bigger/smaller with them?
Hi Andy, a 10 gallon tank is pretty tight quarters, so I would remove the 2nd smaller fresh water pool. What you want is to make sure your largest crab can fully submerge in the water. If they can’t, you’ll need bigger pools.
@@CrabCentralStation thank you! I bought the 10 gallon after another creator recommended 5 gallons per crab so now I'm trying to upgrade to a 20 gallon for my two babies, I will definitely remove the second one thank you very much!!
I am a little confused on how you stated using the Prime. For instance if I treat a gallon jug, once it’s treated it should be good right? Unless I add more tap water? You said the Prime only lasts 48 hours, doesn’t the Prime remove the chemicals/metals that I’m worried about in one treatment? For instance I shouldn’t need to treat the same gallon multiple times if I’ve added no extra tap water, right?
Edit:Never mind, after a little reading I see that it does permanently remove the chlorine/chorea mine in one dose, the 48 hours is referring to ammonia for fish tanks.
Hi Dalton. If you have standing water pools in your tank, you need to change those every 48 hours. Each time you refill those pools up, you will need to Prime them. So, if you have a gallon jug that you make up ahead of time and keep on hand, you will still need to Prime the jug or pool every 48 hours.
@@CrabCentralStation Thank You
Cool videos
What are the filters you’re using in this Video for the tank that show that 5.30 minutes? It looks perfect for my tank? Or do you have a better suggestion?
Gosh, to be honest, I really don't remember. We got them from PetsMart though.
Excellent information.. I have two hermits for my son 7 years old ... please tell me what kind of sand to buy at home Depot? Thank you for sharing with us hermit crab parents 🐚🐚
Washed play sand.
