- In this video I take a look at Redline, one of the best films of the last decade. It took seven years to complete and almost bankrupt the studio that made it.

Redline is one of my favorite animated pieces of work ever. Its so beautiful. The character designs are unique and memorable, and its super fun. The first time I saw it a friend described it as "Imagine a universe where aerodynamics don't matter, and the speed of your vehicle is solely determined by how cool you look driving it."
Flame decals make you go faster though. Everyone knows that.
@@OatmealTheCrazy Espuchaly if dere red Boss. Cuase da Red wunz always go FASTA!!!!
@@docbaker3333 40k knows what's up
There ua-cam.com/video/F50dWPvA4oY/v-deo.html

I just keep seeing space Dandy lol
Why there are no model kits of the vehicles is beyond me
Redline failed hard at the box office
@Ari Jappendi How is it woke
I understand what Ari is saying
@Ari Jappendi You could've worded your argument a little better, mate.
Perspective is so fricking fluid in this movie that a realistic model would feel kinda bland
Redline: the *best* sounding anime I've ever heard. From top to bottom: soundtrack, voice acting, sound effects, ambient effects... even the use of silence in this show is masterpiece.
It's up there but I just can't put it past the score of Joe hisaishi in princess mononoke and the legend of ashitaka
For me it's PAPURIKA by Kon Satoshi
Susumu Hirasawa was phenomenal in that movie
there really isnt anything quite as fun as saying "your just a voice pal. you don't know a damn thing about racing" and then accelerating a lot
first you gotta load the gold nitro charge
I saw that scene in a UA-cam video and it immediately sold me, the visual style and creativity of that scene is so good I feel like I could just reach out and grab it.
The soundtrack of Redline alone is worth it. But I guess, like in a lot of movies, people that don't care about a nice sound system miss a lot of that.
audiophiles get out, and leave your snake oil at the door
@@KingHalbatorix There's nothing wrong with a great soundtrack.
@@KingHalbatorix Only mad cause you can't afford it? Damn. Audiophile is nothing bad and still you can get there without spending big money. Good Sound is something amazing but many people forget about it. Just look at this 8D or 9D Audio crap on UA-cam. Wow the sound moves around and it is mud and echoing like crazy... This is good sound these days?! Man this is sad... Great Sounds and Music even in movies give you so much more feeling and fun about it.
What can you do though? It seems as though if they truly don't care then they really can't be 'saved' - only radicalised into 'nega-audiophiles' like our friend *KingHalbatorix* here.
BRO I LOVED IT FOR THE SOLID REASON OF SOUNDTRACK AND BLACK SHADING SOXUBWLDIXHS
Red line is a master piece in my book. It's incredible to look at every frame of animation and each frame.
+thefatman69fude completely agree! Truly a work of art.
Yup
Basically at any point you can pause and use the frame as a wallpaper
@@solame10101 I have a folder full of Redline frames just for that reason
@@XDBenjy
That is super sick, could you upload it anywhere? Id love to have some, tho i dont have the time to go through it myself just yet
Yeah it took them seven years to make, millions to produce, and flopped harder at the worst possible time for an anime to flop for their studio...
...but....
Imagine being on the Madhouse team, standing with your fellow animators and creators, and just letting all that work wash over you as you look upon the finished product. Take it in and empathize with how _good_ it must have felt. To take a doomed dream and make it real. Not to make money...but because it just _needed_ to be done.
My god....it must have felt spectacular. We can only hope to achieve this much.
It really pisses me off knowing that this film cost 30 million dollars to make and was considered a flop but it made an unbelievable piece of artwork and animation. I wish one of these Multi billionaire's would consider away with only a small portion of the wealth to create something so beautiful and amazing like the rich of the past did indicating contests to produce the most beautiful garden public park or grand architecture.... But I guess holding it all in an offshore account is cool too...
@@LunaticWithALicense Back in the day, investing into art and public works was a way to avoid getting ripped off by taxes. After the new laws and policies were implemented, for a lot of rich people, that was no longer a viable way to save money
to be apart of something so pure must have been cool. I imagine the comradery & respect for one another was through the roof. i hope the development team felt satisfied with their work. its one of the most complete works of art I've ever seen.
This happens when an artists wishes to make something more than just money. Putting everything on the line and making it through Redline with Sonoshee
Its hard to believe it flopped considering how on fire it is, even years later.
I've watched this movie at least once every year since it came out.
I second this
Goals
woah only one race every 5 years my friend
I watch this at least once a week, it speaks to my soul.
@@joshuafallet5690 So i'm not alone. The opening race once a month and the movie once a year for me...😉👌🏽
The Animation Looks Like Its Ripped Straight From A Comic....AND I LOVE IT
soultiger 267 that’s Takeshi Koike man, make sure to remember that name :)
This movie shown me what it means to REALLY leverage every frame for maximum impact of the subject, something a non-animated feature cannot do nearly as well. The sense of speed in Redline is absolutely breathtaking. And that’s coming from someone who is normally bored by that sort of thing...
Imaginary Star Studios I would argue that Sony’s Spiderman: Enter the Spiderverse stands toe to toe when using every frame.
That said both are masterpieces of animation but are not comparable apples to apples. One is a balls to the wall action flick a la Fury Road. The other is a character driven sci-fi adventure piece with great action .
@@macmurfy2jka Both of you are right
This is one of the reasons I love it so much. It's simply undoable in any other medium. I can't think of any other production that harnesses hand drawn animation to this absolutely absurd extent.
Redline is a perfect, sublime love letter to animation. I also like that it isn't super violent
*flash back to when one of the alien commanders was literally picking his subordinates teeth from his fist because he punched him that hard*
@@obisvanainobis9950*or that one cutaway scene of a ROBOWORLD officer getting literally disintegrated by Funky Boy*
"I'm a man of simple tastes"

Redline is a bloody masterpiece. All you who put that insane work into it, know that we appreciate it.
I'd just seen this movie not to long ago. It was pretty much an adrenaline rush. Plus the movie's soundtrack got my heart jumping to its beat.
MACHIIIIINE HEEEEEEEEAAAAAD
I tried to fit this sound byte into the video somewhere - it gets me grinning every time - but it just never seemed to fit.
Tesu chen
I heard it in my head, music and all!
LinchmAAAaaan... And jhOnny BOoya
right next to that ye-yeah-ye-ye-yeah
I've probably seen Redline 10 times, and I can watch it 100 more in my lifetime
You know what I did when I first got my hands on the Blue-ray? I made sure that nobody in the block was at home, pumped the bass and volume to eye-wobbling frequencies, pulled the couch right in front of the TV and just enjoyed the first race like I was at the IMAX. Was I numb and nearly deaf afterwards? Jup, but it sure as hell was worth it.
Also I really prefer this format of recommending one anime per video, instead of a top 10 list
top 10 dumps i took this morning.
Giving credit where credit is due, one masterpiece at a time. I like that. Also...I finally watched it...and holy shit...I know everyone says that it was good...but god damn. I wish I hadn't waited so long to see it.
Redline, and many other Madhouse titles in gerneral, have made some of the greatest and fantastic animations IN THE WORLD! NinjaScroll, Wicked City, Deathnote, Cyber City Odeo, Trigun, Deathnote..and so much MORE!
I tell my friends "this movie is proof that you don't need drugs to see some crazy shit!" and i love every minute of it. I like the reflection.
but it's perfect to watch high as hell
In the other hand using drugs while you are seeing this movie is beyond imagination, magic mushrooms or lsd i recommend
You CANNOT tell me there was nothing illegal used while coming up with this movie.
@@misspurdy27288Considering how difficult drugs can be to get in Japan, it's more likely than you think.
its like you can feel the passion dripping from every single frame of animation and because its hand drawn on cells it'll never get old
I remember when I first saw this movie I was in awe of how polished it was it still doesn't disappoint
Ah man. I love this movie so much. I've bought it on bluray for half a dozen friends who enjoy anime. Only a couple ended up loving it as much as I do, but everyone recognized how amazing it is. This film is a true achievement in anime. It takes my breath away every time. Goddamn. What a great movie.
I saw this movie nearly 12 years ago and will still click any UA-cam video that mentions it.
Just bought the Blu-ray version. Watched it on stream a couple of times before, but now I feel the need to give them some of my money. Worth it!
i bought the bluray because this is a movie worth supporting, but the blu-ray absolutely sucks. the audio mixing takes out a lot of the OOMPH from the engines, and the subtitles are awful-looking.
i still recommend people buy the blu ray, because by god this movie deserves every cent. but do watch a different version.
for reference, i'm in the americas, so that's the blu ray version i'm referencing. the JP one i think it is is the better version.
Don’t forget
UNTZUNTZUNTZUNTZUNTZUNTZUNTZUNTZ
Spectacular film, a visual and auditory feast. It's not really a storytelling masterpiece, but the world building is amazing and will leave you wanting to know more about this crazy universe. Space nazis that hate racing, a racing corporation that seems to own half the galaxy, a bioweapon named funkyboy, all these details and more will leave you hungry for more exploration of this universe.
It won't tug at your heartstrings, it won't surprise you with complexity of characters, but this movie will get your heart PUMPING!
None of my friends want to see this movie even after I tell them how good it is. Yet they will settle for shitty Tokyo Ghoul lol.
They are afraid to find out that they have shit taste and thusly not real friends.
@@ironpulcinella3586 You're right 😔
Lmao Tokyo ghoul is a soap opera aimed to women in Japan. No wonder they don't want to see this.
Gotta smack your friends real quick. Redline is fucking amazing!
Your friends suck, it's time to get new friends.
Redline is a excellent move. The animation and music. It all works. Oh, and your a great reviewer.
I watched this movie for the first time this week and I'm astonished this movie did so bad. This shit was amazing
This just happened to me today
Forever haunting is the Music combined with that howl of a motor at the final charge for Yellow line, that was a show of pure raw energy
The opening is on UA-cam and it's reignited my love of racing games and movies. I'm not talking about the whole movie. The opening did that by itself.
Just saw this yesterday. Won't be forgetting this. Watching this had me feeling like what few movies ever make you feel. Each single frame is so amazing.
redline is was and always will be my nr. one anime. i dont even like racing but i can watch it to no end.
Favorite animated movie. It's cool that you mentioned F-zero as well.
I know this is an older video, but a lot of your editing really sticks out to me. Whether it be how your pictures rumble and move to display tension in your berserk video, or the small audio cues- like when JP flicks the switch in his car, and it switches right into your review. It’s really satisfying to watch and hear!
I rarely watch or read something twice but I think I've watched Redline a good dozen times by now. It's just so much fun.
I'm so glad I got to see this, back when it was free to watch on UA-cam. God, but it's such a stellar movie. I still go back to listen to the soundtrack, every now and again.
One of my old time favorite anime movies ever!!! right there with Jin-Roh, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and Ghost in the Shell.
A lot of people don't know but there is a sort o prequel to Redline called Trava: Fist Planet. In 2006 Madhouse did a teaser for Redline and that is super rare. It used to be on youtube but it got taken down, watch that to see the early designs of many of the characters and vehicles
1:54 damn that some god like animation.
Ikr
I don't know when that gold boost scene will stop giving me goosebumps.
7 years hand drawn
I saw redline a couple years after its release, it impressed me so much that I had to knew how they did, when I got educated that the ENTIRE fin was made by hand and ANALOGUE blew my mind.
Takeshi got fired? Lmao😂😂😂 He then helped create the Fujiko Mine Series and Directed the movie sequels so i guess thats somewhat a gud thing
Redline is a masterpiece
You can say they....redlined it.
I didn't know this movie until a few days ago... watched it three times in a row. Everytime I noticed another detail, brilliant movie.
The fact that Redline doesn't have a cel-shaded, high-octane, arcade racing game still hurts me to this day.
This is actually one of the few dubs you want to watch. Manga did a great job dubbing this, but as someone who's first time viewing this masterpiece was subbed, you miss a lot reading the subs.
the fact that all Mad House animes soundtracks are in spotify makes this studio live forever in our hearths, some Trigun tracks and the super boins are always in my repeats
Ok I'm convinced. Thank you
redline was such an amazing piece of art. the vibrant colours were just overwhelming. it even gave a vibe of the bebop and champloo which i love so much. an amazing work
If I had to choose to watch a single movie for the rest of my life it would be Redline. Nothing I've seen comes even close to the sheer sensation of speed and adrenaline pumping velocity that is represented to the viewer in Redline. A masterpiece 10/10.
I can’t watch this movie enough times. It’s always a go to for me at any type of mood I’m in and I can’t get enough of it.
Have to be honest, shocked i haven't seen this video sooner i watched Redline a few years back, the first time i watched it i was so enthused i rewatched in 3 more times the same week just to take in all of the action and story. Then i revisited it a few months after still not boring to re watch. the actions perfect the soundtracks on point the backstory is heartwarming the animation the art work it takes the cake for me. I can understand the time effort talent and man hours it took and really push the envelope, and how risky that can be for a business. But honestly I'd like to see more of this art style or for that matter more of this story. But at the end of the day love it or hate it. It takes alot to hit the caliber of what Redline really is for what it is. It started strong and ended right, and will keep you on the edge of your seat for 99% or it.
I have never seen a movie as many times as Redline and it's still amazing to watch.
I watched the intro race while hosting one evening and lost track of this film it sits and waits in my ps3..I plan to wake up tomorrow on my day off to enjoy and fully emerse myself in this work of art, but first more UA-cam hype on the film before bed.
Redline is a great movie, with really good music. When I first watched it I knew I had to buy it on DVD then track down the music. I have both and I am very happy.
Bought this one on blu ray immediately after first view of it's trailer, this one was a buy b4 even watching with no regrets
I just needed the first minute of this to convince me to watch it!
Thanks for all the good vids!
Also: Subbed
Let me know what you think of it when you watch it!
It was/is..... FRIGGIN AWESOME :D will watch it again with dubz just to watch all that eye-candy!
There's only one movie I wish I'd seen on the big screen and it's this one.
I haven't seen this film and found myself bopping my head to this video.
I'm not into car related movies but I'm definitely giving this a watch.
_"I'm not into car related movies"_
Neither am I, and this has been one of my favorite - and most rewatched - pieces of media since I first saw it a few years ago.
Definitely worth checking out, regardless of whether or not one likes cars or racing.
This video is a year old? Where the hell have I been??? Time to binge watch.

Redline: the only movie where shit can hit the fan so many times so quickly AND NONE OF THE MAIN CAST FUCKING DIES!!
That transitional music reminds me of the music transitions in Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Tooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day. Where you are in a level and what you are doing, tabulating the background music. Meaning, the background melody still pays, but which instruments are playing it, and how they are playing it, change.
Redline has one of the best style, worldbuilding, lore, characters, music and plot combined of any anime I've ever seen
Just recommended Redline to an anime fan coworker of mine today, he was particularly intrigued when I told him its 100% hand drawn. I can't wait to hear his reaction to it next week. ;)
what was his reaction, it's been over a year!
When i first watch redline i was like why isn't there more
Trava: Fist Planet OVA is in the same universe
I watched the first minute of your video and immediately went over and watched the movie. It's 5:30 AM right now. This movie was absolutely spot on!
7 years. HAND DRAWN. It's worth the two hours to watch Redline.
It's the only anime that kept me on my toes every seconds of it.
Hope they produce another gem like this again!
when i found this movie online i had no idea about it but it got me hooked easily one of the best animes ever made on par with AKIRA
I love the fact that the sound track is like 20 min shorter than the movie. Meaning there Is music through most the movie
I just stumbled across Redline and it's safe to say my jaw was on the floor. Absolutely giddy with adrenaline during the race scenes... ridiculously campy awesome fun start to finish. That movie is just mad.
Love this movie. I find myself watching at least once a month
This recommendation was perfect. I stopped this video midway to go buy Redline here on UA-cam.

WaHoo! I have watch this this movie twice a month for the last year (tongue-in-cheek). The most unashamed World Building EVER. Like Made In Abyss or Howls Moving Castle, The people of a Galaxy are just there... Loving Redline and the World of Racing.
Little bummed you didn't touch more on the absolutely immaculate animation. The amount of detail, even in the tiniest of minutiae like a button push, is absolutely perfect.
Redline is so fucking cool.... one of my all time most favorite movies
This movie is exactly what we imagined as kids playing toy cars but magnified to a degree of beauty and detail that is beyond belief
I’ve already seen the movie and I got chills at least five times during the video.
One of my top 10 all movie. Amazing animation.
I've watched this movie 3 times and not only do I still have goosebumps but I also generally hate watching stuff more than once.
Its more than excellent and I would never judge someone jacking off to this level of animation.
I straight up never knew about this movie until i saw the clip from the beginning of the movie and i thought it was the end of the movie, but GOT DAAAMNN if i didnt fall in love with it and immediately find a way to watch this incredible film, and gee golly i love REDLINE with all my heart... that is all.
This popped in on my feed and I watched Redline and I was not disappointed .
Thank you for this review. I wouldn't have found this movie otherwise and I enjoyed the video essay so much I watched the movie straight away.
How this movie went under my radar until 2021 is shocking to me because it's one of the best things I have ever watched, the sound track matches the action perfectly and get's me fired up every time, I didn't need to watch it for ten minutes to know I was going to love it more like 10 seconds.
Thanks, I've seen most of the movies you've talked about in your videos and I relish these gems but I have totally missed this one, never even heard of it. It's on top of my list now.
Free on UA-cam, though I recommend blu-ray
I just watched Redline for the first time and I am SO glad to see all this love for it in the comments section

Glad the internet could connect me with all you fine, smart, brilliant folks
I saw it last night for free on the Tubi App. This is on my top 5 now.🤘🏻
I recently showed this movie to a friend of mine who loves Madhouse but never heard of it. I made the decision to show them the dub (because I love Akihiko and his English VA) and they were mad that it took them till now to even hear about it, let alone watch it. It's a great movie
I have sinned here too, my eyes almost came out of their orbits and my heart jumped like a speeding car, I loved it and whenever I can I recommend it! thanks for this boy!
i still remember that unexpected fan service
I realy, really hate calling every one example of nudity as fanservice. Fanservice is placing camera underskirt in a shot where two people talk. Showing that someone prefers to walk around topless when in her apartment shows character and has a point. She is comfortable with her body, she prefers her comfort over social standards etc.
@@olotocolo
Thats just fanservice with few extra steps
Ok. I am sold. Going to go figure out how to watch it now.
This movie makes me chill everytime.
This was one of the best anime movies I have ever seen, it reminded me of the excitemen I felt as a child when I used watch anime, now, all I see in youtube recomendation videos for anime is touchy feely crap, protagonists questioning why they have to fight or someone who was pulled into another world and became a slime.
Anime is dying, but RED LINE is pure gold
The animation in Redline is simply gorgeous!
I’d love to see a Redline series with each episode having more and more intense races building up to the Redline
