Guess I’m odd, but I don’t mind taking a break from crochet every once in a while to untangle my yarn barf, if it even occurs. It’s like working on a puzzle in reverse. 🙂
I've just found you and I am thrilled with your.personality and kind attitude. You're so talented and you teach so carefully, making sure we understand.
0:34 I use red heart! They’re $7 a pop which can sound like a lot for cheap yarn but of the cheap yarn at Walmart they’re one of the nicer ones and I absolutely love their multi color yarns. I had no idea they had more than normal skeins 😂
This was a very good review with humor and new information that others have missed. I still haven't been convinced to buy this product at the current price for myself, however, I would gift these to begining yarnsters.
As a beginner, what's wrong with Red Heart yarns? I see lots of it, so I thought it was good yarn. I've been crocheting baby items - I don't want to be giving bad products 😲🤔🤷🏽♀️🧶
@@clsmith614 Red Heart makes a wide variety of very popular yarns. It has been around a long time. Their Super Saver yarn is a real workhorse. If you make something today, it will probably look the same ten years from now with very easy care. It is not really a soft yarn, however, and I think that is one objection many people have to that particular Red Heart product. It is 100percent acrylic, and many people prefer other materials in the yarn that they use. I think it has long been a gateway yarn for beginners, and it has many loyal fans.
Guess I’ve never had the major tangle issues others may have. A little tangle if I don’t find the end in the center quickly, but once I find that in the “tangle “ it pulls easily. No knotting.
If you’ve ever noticed, RedHeart yarn has a bit of pull to it. When I use it, I spend the time to stretch the yarn about a foot at a time, and wind it into a center pull cake. With a new skein, I pull from the center, about a foot and stretch the it. You can actually feel the moment the fibers give & loosen up. Doing this, I’ve found has 2 major benefits. 1) The yarn texture changes from the rough feel RedHeart usually has, to a more softer feel like Bernat Mandala yarns have. 2) The 4 ply thickness now has a 3 ply thickness, and blends well with standard 3 ply yarn. If you decide to try this, keep in mind to overlap the sections as you stretch it, as it will leave noticeable rough patches if you done. And, it’s not steel cable, it will break if you pull too hard. So, pull it until you feel the fibers give, and the yarn stretches a bit. With a standard skein, the entire process does take at least an hour between the stretching & winding into a cake. So, be patient, and you will be surprised with your final results. This process is something my great grandmother taught me to back in the early 1970’s, when you had to wind your yarn into balls, before you could even use it.
@@LittlejohnsYarn the price should have been factored into your review as we often weigh price into the value of something. I’ve yet to buy it and doubt I would even on sale. I can find similar feeling yarns as all of the o go products for less. But thank you for reviewing it! I had wondered what people thought.
you get the same yardage as before. The increase price is for packaging and special machines used to wrap the yarns into long sausages. I believe it's a $2 increase compared to the regular price.
I've been using coupons at Joann to get them cheaper than the regular skeins. Since O'Go has been at full price, you can use a 40% or 50% off coupon on them. I find you often can't do that with yarns because they're usually on some kind of sale (10-25% off) where you can't use the coupons.
Love the review! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions❤️ Side note I've heard you can soften SuperSaver yarn by soaking/washing the finished product with cheep hair conditioner and fabric softener.
Yes that is true. I have done that repeatedly and it really works. Also, if you want your item to drape rather than be stiff you can "kill" it using a hot iron but you have to be very careful that you don't melt the yarn too much. I've had good results with cheap yarn like super saver.
Not sure if I would buy this yarn, 1. I don't care for the packaging 2. Some of the o go seems more pricey than the yarns I buy with less yardage but if I could get it a little cheaper like at Joann's with a coupon I may try it. Good review, thank you.
Thank you so much for your review because I'm in New crocheter and I was thinking about trying that but I wasn't sure now I know it would be good for me so thanks
I still thinks it works better as a butt cushion or neck pillow... I mean - why? Is it a necessary development in the world of yarn or just a gimmick like the bobbins from Premier? Also - because of the odd shape they didn't want it to get too large so there is less yardage than in the cakes, and it costs more. We don't have Yarnspiration yarns in Europe, but if we would have - I wouldn't buy it. But I did give my like to help towards your next box of wine, of course! LOL
Totally agree. They’re charging the customers for all that cardboard. I’m sure they could had achieved the same no tangle in a cake. Now you’re paying more for less. Ridiculous.
You could hang it up. I didn’t realize they had Caron One. Do they still call it One Pound. Red Heart Super Saver has gone from being made in the US, then to China, now to Turkey. Egypt and Turkey make the best yarns for some reason. There are many fluffy acrylic yarns…I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby, Red Heart Soft, Big Twist by Joann, Impeccable by Michaels, Caron Cakes and I can go on and on. I have had allergies my whole life, and I’ve tried almost all kinds within a reasonable price.
Love the thumbnail and the intro as much as the content! lol The excess packaging puts me off a bit, to be honest. Storage would be a bit problematic too. I'm well and truly on the fence right now. Great review though!
I actually kind of like the Caron Colorama version (5 weight), it inspired me to make my first knit hat. My favorite thing about it is the ease of separating the colors. But I would also buy this yarn in a regular skein. Something I'm realizing that probably isn't an issue for everyone is that pulling from a tube on the outside isn't really the best for me because cat hair, so that's a con...
Question for my fellow yarn junkies. I just got into caking as yarn myself. Do I also pull from the outside of a yarn cake? Inquiring minds want to know.
Honestly I prefer walmart yarn over the redheart super saver yarn. their both acrylic but, mainstay is definately softer (they changed manufacturing from china to turkey) then super saver and also cheaper despite having more yarn. Where I live it's like around 2.5 dollars (due to tax) for 7 ounces (or 5 oz if multicolored) of mainstay yarn, and about 5 dollars for 14 ounces of mainstay yarn. Now it's not as soft as you can get when using fabric softener with natural fibers of course. But since I'm a college student getting natural fibers end up being a splurge for me like maybe once a year unless I get it in a lionbrand mystery box. Like I've spent 40 dollars (including taxes) on mainstay yarn before and I ended up with 6 pounds of yarn to experiment with. Which I know is probably nothing to the savings of thrifting old yarn clothing/blankets, which lets be honest is probably WAY better for the environment. I only bring this up because o'go redheart super saver yarn is 7 dollars (rounded up one cent) for 5-7 oz of yarn. I mean sure if you have money to spend...go ahead I guess? But if your going to be spending 7 dollars on 5-7 oz of yarn I'd hope it wouldn't be on redheart super saver yarn. Like lets be honest that isn't really super saver when their own brand has other better yarn for the same exact price. You have red heart with love yarn (which I've heard is softer, i haven't tried it myself) for the exact same ounces to money ratio in the exact same yarn weight. If you wanna bring other brands in from yarnspiration, you have caron simply soft with 6 oz to 6 dollars. tldr: If your going to spend 7 dollars on yarn don't go for redheart super saver yarn, and go for something worth your money because it's not a super saver, its just rough acrylic yarn (yes acrylic yarn can be very soft its not always rough), so there is technically more cons for just super saver in general. For the other yarns in o'go. I guess it might be worth it it? But if your going to pull from the outside, you could probably just do the same with a regular skein of yarn since its usually not that yard and I haven't experienced to many tangles pulling from the outside of a skein in general compared to center pull. Like they still happen but I wouldn't pay extra money for o'go because the ones on the outside aren't a big deal compared to center pull. this ended up being alot longer then I meant it to be but.... I'd probably buy a new knitter or crochetter better yarn then super saver, cause noone should have to experience yarn burns from.....that yarn while trying to learn, especially when it's not saving you any money, and might just make you not wanna learn (I personally had that issue as a teen when trying to teach myself from a tiny instruction manual while using super saver yarn. Yarn burns for daysssssss
Great review! I still can't see myself buying because of the price. It was 8.99 at the Joanns where I saw it. Because of your review I will consider picking some up if it goes on sale. Can you tell me what yarn winder you use? I looked for a link in the description and didn't see one. Thanks!
@@LittlejohnsYarn Thank you. The one I have I got from AC Moore, but is a side winder, always moves, and gets frustrating. I will look on Amazon for the kind you have. Thanks for the tip. I wanted to make sure you get the credit for sending me to the purchase. Thanks again🙂👍.
The 8.99 was probably Caron Coloramo, which is a bulky 5 and to me feels a lot softer than Red Heart Super Saver. I don't think Joann has Red Heart O'Gos yet (just Bernat blanket and Caron Colorama), but it will probably be like $5.99 when/if they do get it.
If you have to unwind from the outside, for me the spindle with a regular skein is much more efficient. Working it so you don't get tangles is no different than skeins as well. Storage and travel convenience also would be better with cakes, balls, or skeins. Oh No for me.
The first thing I ever knit was a scarf using red Red Heart yarn. I almost quit knitting after using that horrible scratchy yarn (and I did complete the project). I'm by no means a yarn snob. Acrylic has its place in the world and I've knit some beautiful things with it. But to this day I refuse to buy Red Heart yarn.

I did not know Yarnspirations took over Red Heart. Hhmmm, interesting!
That happened years ago.
