On their 30th Anniversary the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise into one of the world's most acknowledged rock groups. Guiding the band though the '80s and '90s with a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence, their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and thought-provoking lyrics have succeeded in inspiring both the audience and the critics' imagination the world over. In recent years the band have continued on their creative trajectory and with their induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, they have been able to reflect on their huge body of work as they continue to be prolific and pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio.
From the debut album Of Skins and Heart (including their first hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish, charting high in both Australia and the USA, (featuring the ubiquitous Under The Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), through to 2009′s lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23, lead vocalist and bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Tim Powles (now an active member of the band for 17 years), have continued as the church through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring sense of space, melody, beat driven prose and sonic charm.
Rolling Stone Australia gave their last album Untitled #23 an unprecedented 5 star review -- "a stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock". In the USA Rolling Stone commented, "the church have truly reaffirmed themselves as one of the world's leading melodic art-rock bands, regarded by critics as "a powerful, progressive force in rock music", playing "the most ethereal sounds this side of paradise" and have remained one of the world's most innovative and enigmatic groups justifying praises from the press including "Best guitar band on Earth", "Sonic perfection", "Sounds that caress the senses". "A masterpiece of stealth".
One of the best bands of all time
Après les WHO
My fav Church song and one of the best songs I've ever heard. The intro(first min or so) is still one of the most beautiful and haunting intros I've ever heard. They just don't make music like this anymore.
One of SK's best songs ever, for sure. But, then again, he has so many....
One of my all time favorites as well. Like coming down off a melancholy mushroom trip.
Its magic
Kevin Hyde Correctomondo!
"I paid $80 for this wedding ring I couldn't take it off if I tried" I love this line !!
Such a brilliant & underrated band. Saw them 2x in Chicago & they blew me away!!
One of the best songs ever written.
The Womb is a good song! This is an excellent version!
probably the best song ever written
Absolutely! 💗
Marty and Pete.A match made in guitar heaven.
Too much energy together. Awesome for us, but not for the musicians. ❤
After listening to Starfish many times over as a 20 something, was lucky enough to hear this song played live in 2017 at the Rosemount Hotel , Perth.
One of my favorite tunes by The Church.
I like Peter and Marty hard panned left and right. Good mix.
THIS is how you do a live mix of a two guitar band! Extraordinary!
Why am I crying 😊... beautiful
Marty, my guitar heroe!
Peter just a great
the greatest band in my last 30 years of life - they have saved me many times - even if Kilbey is an egotistical soul
Kilbey's a heck of an artist, but definitely not a nice guy.
@@johngonzalez624 He is a complete asshole.
@@johngonzalez624 Could not agree more. Complete asshat. In and out of heroin? That's fine by me but he BLAMES people for any and everything that has gone wrong. If he said, "I have a heroin problem and I make bad decisions," I would be good. But, nothing is EVER Steve's fault. He's 60 something. Sad.
@@framodcole Not a nice guy.
I met him this year and he was very pleasant but he is stuck between self promotion and spiritually searching. Great artists can have what seem to be conflicting personalities at times. I put him in the status of: Cool Dude. :)
MWP such a force! The Church perhaps one of the most under rated bands of all time. Just a genius of a band always.
All the words of acknowledgement in regards to the ethereal aural excellence of The Church have been spoken, exhausted even. However, The Church stands alone in the halls of listening excellence...their very own hall.
I am truly glad I got too experience the church and see them at such a huge passage in my life... I had broken up with the love of my live and was completely broken open and this album along with Peter Gabriel's and Sting's were the soundtrack for 1988 and 1989. And the pain lasted much longer but I knew I would recover after those two years... This song in particular was the song that allow deep deep grief to erupt from my consciousness and manifest into the daylightf... I had it hidden for so long... It could not have happened any other way....
I could listen to this song over and over....it's so beautiful!! 💗
In my hoteeeeel wooomb... soft and soul made... it's a wondeeeeerfulll rooom...
They have so many awesome songs and this sits on top. Love that descending line and Kilbey's fevered dream lyrics.
Steve Kilbey = Genius ! 🎸
Marty Wilson-Piper gets cut short, in my opinion, every time. He's great. Let him go!
The best song too take you on a dream trip
Alive ... makes me feel 100 percent ..... Master of good feeling!!
I listen to this song over and over..love it. I 🥰
Remembering my adolescence in a profound way in Brazil, thank God for giving me such blessed moments listening to my favorite band.
Makes me want to take Ayushca
Makes one's soul shiver doesn't it?! That's what the Church have always delivered in one form or another.
😊 this may be my favorite version
Such a gorgeous song. Probably my favorite song on the album and the one whose majestic ending I’ve tried my best to emulate in my own music
My favorite album closer of all time
Such a brilliant &’talented band
GOOSEBUMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The greatist band ..
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for Watching!
still good after all this time, love this album
yes
Brilliant & underrated band
Those solos by MWP, were great !
You as a band ! Have helped me :) Thankyou !!!
I saw these guys play in San Diego, Ca March 31, 2004. Not to many concerts that influenced me enough to remember the exact day I saw it. Hope to catch them again one day.
+Ray Rosz
I know what you mean about remembering stuff with amazing things or bands that may change your life. Saw them on this tour ('88) :
Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill, NC ( where the University of North Carolina is). I was completely sober but the first time ever on both Ecstascy And MUSHROOMS. We coined it the "MX Missle" for mushrooms and X.
Been a Church freak ever since. So, what is that, 27 years? OMG, I am older
Such a timeless and beautiful song!!!!!!......
Mesmerising
A damn fine Clive Barker-esque short story set to utterly incredible music. Thanks for posting!
thanx for sharing this, what a great band, i miss this times
Utterly brilliant!
zero dislikes, keep it that way!!
That's top shelf in anyone's language
Awesome, could be my favorite Church song :)
I could of saw this band back in 1988. None of my friends were into the church so I didn't go. Looking back I should of went alone....
goosebumps. easily
Just beauty n brutality mixed ......one of my fav songs n performances of this tour .....at the Park West in Chicago a warm summer night - literally the same thing as here in Sydney on the net for a world to see ....but I remember standing the entire last song ....cuz our beloved guys were leaving us shortly.....just brilliant!!!!!.........when they playd P=A and old flame, chose n Film finished that set before this one (my fav first 3 songs ever to close a perfect album!!!).....I actually had tears in my eyes -and my beautiful bride smiled and said "u waitd a long to hear this live ..." And I replied - "I never ever thought it would ever happen on a tour such as 3 Albums in just under 3 hours" ......I remember standing next to Marty an hour later as friends of us were wishing everyone safe travels n cheers ....and I looked at him and said - WOW!!!!!......just amazing night ....and he said the Chicago show , the great Park West and the fans love .....was a night like no other in quite some time ......I said - it felt like time stopped and went back a few decades......we shook hands, a man hug ...that was the last time I saw him with the Church and I had seen the band 15!!! times before that nite in 3 different cities too!!!...... Chicago , I believe , was a special place for the guys .....I think they enjoyed always the time off the stage and in my beautiful , enchanted city - especially near the club - a gorgeous Park West .........I miss u guys .....those prescious moments talkn before or after shows - the drinks n the smiles......I'm very partial to saying this - and a fanbase can agree - this was the greatest band that got away - but they didn't give up - and always came back to us with more to offer than the world had given back to them........just a few years earlier they toured the Univited....album and they were doing more of an acoustic set to save on travel costs , and club dimensions too......they opened with Block .. easily one of my favorite songs they ever wrote and I was there from the very beginning word for word .......Steven put so much emotion into that song and it sounded so brilliant....many time n signutre changes...at the end of the song i was right in eye glance and I stood up and just applauded as best I ever could - Steven smiled n nodded at me - he knew it was a newer song , a recent album release and also a song that takes the listener on a journey they must stay with til the end .......just a wonderful show , also at the Park West ...later on outside at like 1am Chicago time ...my wife , my friend and his bride talked to Steven on a humid night outside the doors on the street just trying to cool off outside but it was a hot nite.. ..... pictures and stories of the past n present - well wishes of families, all our childrens n loved ones - I asked him to kindly sign GAF and he smirked , everyone knows the story behind the weird production and inhuman percussion .....I was honest and just told him th truth- Grind is a gem and so are many others ...but the soulful way he sang Fading Away .....(in my top 10 songs by the guys) always tears me to the core .....he looked at me and said - Thank you ....Thank you and I really mean it ......after taking to much of his time , way later into the dark night ....we all hugged and wished farewells and see u soon ........that nite , that show before n after.. proved to me once again ......the GREATEST band that no one really really ever knew , the way the world should have .......the band , the guys , best accomplished musicians in rock music - EVER !!!!!........good health n happiness to all!!!!.........I go back in my head and revisit those special evenings from the band , the best shows iv ever seen......just to make my own life n world .....a better place than it ever is...thanx forever to the Church!!!!!!.......
Something special with 'the church' ✅

Excellent!
L♡VE THESE GUYS..❤🎧
excellent, my fav church song
Espectacular!!!
Cada vez mejores, los amo!
They guys sound great here live on an amazing song...One of my all time favorites. The music evokes so much for me, musical tapestry of my life. Marty's guitar prowess is in great form. I like it when he and Peter let themselves get into the music and add to the energy.
I seen them in Sacramento around 1986, in a club my sister weasled my way in
Amo. Bom demais
Ah, doesn't it make you feel alive to know their still able to crank out this music ... still? And check out the paisley Steve's sporting. Awesome & thank you for posting this.
My love song
I have always loved this song ... what a wonderful band!
Volcano pierce the air, ashes block out the sun.
Down in the lair, well I met her there
With a price for everyone.
I paid eighty dollars for this wedding ring,
I couldn't take it off if I tried.
And the cactus sure tastes strangely sweet
As it goes down inside
I dream I'm safe in my hotel womb.
Soft and soul made, it's a wonderful room.
I wish I'm back in my hotel womb.
Slip through the crack, to that wonderful room.
Sudden voltage in the night, with a rainforest girl.
As we float downstream to the Amazon River
Where the black waters swirl.
I say, why are you people wearing those masks?
I say, can we be reconciled?
She says the mother of the storm has to roam the sky
Searching for her child. ()
Morning comes at last, and she's lying by my side.
She's got the face of the widow who keeps following me
And the body of my bride.
I say, why are those buildings swaying like trees?
I say, can we stop for a while?
She says, can't you hear the city that's hidden in there?
It's just another mile.
If I may, indulge in a theory for you and all
The lads were here in the beast we call America when recording 'Starfish',
and there much tension during this period, from this I believe opened Steve to write the amazing songs that are so prevalent throughout that album.
And then, there is this song with its surreal lyrics and atmosphere pulling you in, a story set in music.
So you see what America can do
( well, Los Angeles ,)
lol..
Peace from the beast..David B.
Yes, and Steve also started trying to REALLY catch the dragon at that point. By GAF he kicked Richard out for drinking....yet, Steve's heroin addiction was fine. Kilbey is a great writer. He's also an ass. Didn't LA also give us Waddy Wachtel as a producer for the Church for GAF? Oh, it did. Way too many effects and way too many child porn fans (Waddy) working on that album. Steve is brilliant. Steve is also an idiot. Many songs before Starfish....are much better, and that was pre-LA.
@@framodcole
They kicked Richard out (or he left) due to lack of dedication. I read that on Marty’s blog. They didn’t want to part with him, they had no choice. Richard lost his confidence in the studio when the engineer wanted him to play like a metronome. That’s why they used a drum machine for most of the tracks on GAF. Marty regrets replacing Richard with a drum machine.
This one - as always - ends too bl..dy soon ! Amazing piece of music.
Was born in 73 in syd. The church lads r a huge influence in my massive music tastes. Just find them more of a studio band as aposed 2 live. If u dissagree let me know.
Love you thenks
steve sounds superb he never sings a song the same.
This Song Puts A Damper On Me At Times.. 😂😂
no one plays church songs like MWP and PK
GOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MARTY & PETER come back........
..
Steve make it happen!
The most talented member of the band is Peter in my honest opinion. Such a modest talented musician.
He actually hits less notes now then when he started out. That is a feat in itself.
Is he crying/ choking up when he sings the wedding ring
10 super dudes couldn't top this original line-up...
yeah,... Hotel Womb..
ploog kilbey piper koppes
a time gone by...
Unbeatable combo of musical genius, wonder, spiritual transportation...on and on!
I think they're better without Ploog; however, I like most of the albums with him more. That may sound strange, but Powles took them into the 90s and 2000s.
ditto to what TheOctoberspirit said
and TIM....said he is TOO talented to be a drummer........
Planet
Planetshifter.com lives
The crowd is damn boring!!!!! sitting???? is not a movie! is a fucking rock concert!
The guitar work on this show is nothing short of amazing. Kilbey does not seem to be in very good form however. Missing lyrics, sloppy playing and his demeanor make me wonder if he's still battling the demons.
My favourite. Horrible performance.
Marty does not look well :(
+Jeff's Best Hemp
Agreed and I recognized that, too. Didn't say anything, though. :-) Marty, I hope you are well, in all seriousness.
+Jeff's Best Hemp it's 2013. Now he's definitely more relaxed and in a good shape too.
well it is the last song of a 3 hour show!
He somehow turned into cabbage looking Robert Smith
thumbs down = sad lives
I'm so sorry, but I can't appreciate that live version. Absolutely off-key.
Kilbey and Richard wrote the song......thank GOD for Steve. All crap.
