On their 30th Anniversary the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise into one of the world's most acknowledged rock groups. Guiding the band though the '80s and '90s with a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence, their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and thought-provoking lyrics have succeeded in inspiring both the audience and the critics' imagination the world over. In recent years the band have continued on their creative trajectory and with their induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, they have been able to reflect on their huge body of work as they continue to be prolific and pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio.
From the debut album Of Skins and Heart (including their first hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish, charting high in both Australia and the USA, (featuring the ubiquitous Under The Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), through to 2009′s lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23, lead vocalist and bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Tim Powles (now an active member of the band for 17 years), have continued as the church through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring sense of space, melody, beat driven prose and sonic charm.
Rolling Stone Australia gave their last album Untitled #23 an unprecedented 5 star review -- "a stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock". In the USA Rolling Stone commented, "the church have truly reaffirmed themselves as one of the world's leading melodic art-rock bands, regarded by critics as "a powerful, progressive force in rock music", playing "the most ethereal sounds this side of paradise" and have remained one of the world's most innovative and enigmatic groups justifying praises from the press including "Best guitar band on Earth", "Sonic perfection", "Sounds that caress the senses". "A masterpiece of stealth".
This song is one of the best ever recorded . The reason I say this . Because its one of those incredibly special songs that gives you a certain feeling when you hear it that you only feel from hearing it .
One of my favorite songs of the 80s or any other decade.Haunting, moody and just plain beautiful.
Absolutely....I just can't figure out how I never heard it before two weeks ago? lol
Hi@scarlet.rememder me Jim Rufert
This is one of those songs that you just can't believe is possible to be made by humans, it's not about the rhythm, not about melody or voice, it's about like the whole freakin song is soundtrack of your waking and dream life.
Totally in agreement.
:)
Verdad, fantastica cancion.
An ethereal, aural masterpiece...
Calm down pal
@@TeresaBockwoldt meow, meow!
Whoever mixed the music that night was in top form just like the band, perfection.
Timeless brilliance.... THIS is what should be winning Grammys
Grammys can go to Hell
Not the crap that is served up today.
This should have millions and millions of views. They are still pure magic.
I AGREE
Like fine wine and vintage sportscars
I'm sorry for that bro,
Because they are not appreciated the importance of doing this kind of good songs in the 80s good band!?
But this is really timeless...
I discovered this when it first came out. Got the album. I’m 82 and still watch it on u tube, along with with, Jonny lang LIE TO ME and of course, Steve winwood. CANT FIND MY WAY HOME!!! Bless ‘em all.
Probably the best song in the world.

For my money still one of the most addictively beautiful songs I've ever heard...damn but it's held up well! A timeless masterpiece!
Holy shit this is live!!! LMFAO this blows away anything in the last 10 years of music of any live crap that people even attempted to play.Christ man awesome sound.

Goosebumps when drums and bass kick in. Beautiful memories ...
Incredible voice!
The chords of this song are wonderfull
This song makes me float on air. Just the sound of it causes memories to come flooding back. Dancing, drinking beer, laying on a blanket under the milky way and wondering what you you were looking for.
One of the most amazing, timeless, brilliant pieces of music ever...By one of the best bands around the globe. This sonic tapestry always sounds fresh, with rich layers...No matter how Steve sings it, no matter how Peter plays the solo, how the band weaves the magic in its mysterious, Shimmering, mesmerizing, empathy inducing quality... It somehow captures you each time. ...Leaves you waiting for more, always.
And its a timeless song, too…just sheer perfection and quiet bliss💫💫💫💫
1988, what a year! I miss this kind of music. ❤❤
A haunting tune played in the key that I really like to hear.
Sounded even more heavenly whenever I was high- back in the day.
Thanks for checking out our videos :)
LOVE this song. Timeless.
I was working late night FM radio in the late 80s when this song came out. Every time it came up in rotation, I had to just stop and listen. Still feels that way.
God I love this band
Oh when this record came out.... blown away!
Got to see them live at a small gig at the University of Chicago. Band left stage with a guitar feeding back center stage. Epic night
I have always loved this song. It just sends my mind into space.
And was appropriate for that Donnie Darko scene.
Send u into the milky way takes u off this doomed earth
one of my all time favs.
music ecstasy. this band should be as big as U2, they are that damn good.
One epic song is not enough. U2 had dozens of epic world class songs. This one is great, for sure.
@@joe22589 The Church has multiple epic songs, too. Educate yourself. The Church has more than 20 studio albums, and every one of them is great.
Just one example... ua-cam.com/video/96YYp98ye9o/v-deo.html
I would say better imo.
joe22589 The Church has to date 25 studio albums with an incredibly wide range of songs from the bizarre, chaotic and psychedelic beauty of Day Of The Dead; Chromium; Vanishing Man; Anesthesia; Lunar and Trance Ending, just to name a small handful, to the melodic beauty of Two Places At Once; After Everything, Now This and straight up great rockers like Space Saviour and their new wave, jangly early stuff. Again
25 albums and I just mentioned a handful of songs. They have consistently put out great music for over 40 years and still going.
One of my favorites of all time!
To me this song is about sending your troubles away and let them fade and staring out into space into those beautiful stars ⭐️
The feeling of letting go never felt so good in my life. Such a magical song. The Church rocks. 😎👌
Our pleasure!
Imagine having this live version on Spotify I would play it again and again and again and again !!
1/1/24 stands the test of time, always brings me back to a special time and place, the 80’s-90’s
This song is like being on the edge of a dream and conscious, just drifting back and forth.definitely stirs the inner soul of a person.❤❤❤
Man they sound great still. One of my fav tunes!
still one of the best shows I've ever seen. One of the most under rated guitarists ever. Just incredible.
I was late on the "Church scene" and came in during Starfish. It was a brilliant piece of work and I couldn't get enough of Kilbey's voice paired with the amazing, ethereal guitar work and precision percussion. Starfish always has a special place in my heart and is a timeless work. This Sydney concert was phenomenal proving that the boys still have their craft under fine control after all these years. If only but in a dream to have been there...
Jim Snyder Poseur! (Just kiddin’, same here 😊)
I love this song ❤️
Beautiful poetry. Beautiful melody. I remember anguish. Glory, honor, peace. I still love this song.
Simply stunning
One of the all time greats.
Love this song! I'll never , ever tire of listening to it. ❤❤

I have always loved this song. It just sends my mind into space.
One of the last good bands..They're still some out there..
this song is great...
I’m forever locked in mentally to this masterpiece of the Australia I once loved and now long for. 😢
A real favorite, been playing this for 3 decades on my 6 string Takamine and love it just as much now a 30 years ago. And I just got a 12 string, found in an antique shop; playing on capo 5 as done in this video on my new/old 1970s Penco 12 string sounds awesome! Love this tune,
Invierno de 1988, una de las mejores canciones que escuché

A cool summer night here in Detroit! We ♥️ The Church!! Under the m.way 2nite.
I didn't even missed the bagpipes in 2:24 The Church brings back the best memories of college days. Peter Murphy, The Mission UK, Icehouse, only the best...
From
videopresentaciones
It's actually an ebow
Gday mate, when recording Starfish, there were no bagpipes. It was an eBow on an electric guitar run through a synth rig.
@@bimma320 thanks for that, it's a very realistic bagpipe sound on the recording but nice to know it's a synth so I don't hurt myself trying to cop the exact sound lol
viewoftheaskew it was done the same way they show you here with an eBow; that little box thing he tosses away (lol) after the solo which makes the strings vibrate. The album added further processing
Gosh, he's only looking a little bit older. The song never gets old at all.
Such a melodic sad song
One of the band in the world thenk you for this wonderful music that you bring to the world !! Lol
Never gets old
This song will take all your worries away!! Love The Church songs of my youth and present for that matter!!
One of the best songs ever. After the Cure. The Church absolute
Absolutely amazing. So glad I finally got to see them live for an acoustic show a few years ago.
Goosebumps when drums and bass kick in. Beautiful memories ...
Timeless brilliance.... THIS is what should be winning Grammys
Simply stunning
music ecstasy. this band should be as big as U2, they are that damn good.
It is haunting and beautiful
Santiago de Chile 1987 escuchando a esta gran banda
That was brilliant using the lead solo guitar at the ending of the song. Instead of the usual lead solo 2 thirds into any song out there. Brilliant work and song.
What an awesome track! !
Still sends chills down my spine.
Listening to this laying down seeing the stars under the milky way tonight
Still amazing to hear this!!
F yeah, this is great LIVE.
Still listening in 2019, We had so many great Aussie bands
Agreed
THAT DRUM SOUND¡¡¡¡¡
My second husband hated this song. So I divorced him ; )
