When I first heard this song on the radio, I thought it was a new Pink Floyd song. Operation:Mindcrime and Empire were the 3rd and 4th album of 15 total, with #16 due to be released in October. The 5th, Promised Land was their highest charting album in the US Geoff Tate was fired from the band after the 12th,following a backstage altercation before a show in Brazil in 2012, replaced by Todd LaTorre. Founding guitarist and primary songwriter, Chris DeGarmo left in 1998 after the 6th record.
Wow, you know a lot more about the band than I do, but that's cool, I love it when our viewers are able to give me new information. I'm really surprised to hear that Promised Land did better than Empire, the only song I remember off that album was Sign of the Times, while Empire had so many great tracks.
If you want an example of Tate's high register, "Take Hold of the Flame" is a good one. There's a song with Tate, Halford, Dio and many other hard rock and metal vocalist: "Stars", that charity project from 1985.
