Excellent video. No annoyingly loud music, no wasted time, and lots of good info.
Always wanted a 97 Rav4 2 door, or a Suzuki x90.
Thanks
You are The Apostle Paul, of Rav 4s.
God bless.
thanks, came here just to see how to change the head gasket and ended up giving my dads 96' rav4 a whole tune up.
Wow. You're a madman. Great vid. Right to the point. Zero BS. Thanks for this
Zero BS, Madman, Point, Great, WOW, Thanks
Recently bought a 2000 rav4 and your videos have been really helpful although you made that fuel filter seem a lot easier than it was for me. Don't think mine had ever been replaced. 150k miles too.
These videos are great, thanks Paul! This will be a huge help for me as my '97 Rav4 definitely needs a tune-up.
Amazing video. Straight to the point. Please make more! 🙏🏼
That said, NEVER use anti-seize on a spark plug with shiny threads. It already comes with a special coating from the factory to prevent seizing.
Any anti-seize used will act like a LUBRICANT and will cause your torque specs to be off, ultimately over-torquing the spark plug.
The only time anti-seize should be used is when the threads on a spark plug have a dull/matted, non-shiny/metallic finish.
😎👍🏼
Good info! I did not know that. Thank you.
Just bought a Rav4 as a farm car, these videos are of great help keeping her going. Much appreciated from New Zealand :)
Thanks for all your knowledge and descriptive videos Paul
Exellent video for helping rav4 owners , i know someone who has done all this plus removed rear seats , replaced the front seats with much lighter race style seats off alibaba , he is getting better mpg out of his toy now , no figures but he is much more pleased with it now. ; ]
Thanks for the hard to find ignition timing information.
I love these videos. I love the old school rav4
Thanks for uploading and sharing!
Just bought a '96 today (good and almost rust free from an old couple) with new service done already.
Your videos will help me a lot in the future!
Congratulations! RAV4's are awesome. Also, you're lucky about the rust. Mine has a lot of rust.
@@LabCoatPaul I'm actually looking for a good place to add some extra spot lights to the front. Unfortunately bars are not allowed anymore in Germany, if you didn't have some anyways. So it's kind of a challenge to find a good spot to fix them...

really good video congrats
So amazing
Nice, efficient video.
Ive got original wires and distributor on mine,210,000 miles! Just replaced the denso platinum +2 plugs which may have been original as well. A little.ash deposit on one side of the plugs.
Did the fuel filter following your video, didn't went that well!
First off, I bought the filter from Toyota part-number and it came with holding bracket. So I decided to replace the whole assembly instead to untight the current bracket to replace only the filter.
In reinstalling the new filter+bracket I managed to break one of 2 bolts that hold the bracket :'(
And in a general way getting the bolts lose and wrenching in that tight space is quite difficult !
So in the end this simple task took me 2h+ and now my filter bracket is only held by 1 bolt -_-
Son of a... I changed the plugs today. Didn't use that b gel. 1 day is what I missed you video by. 1 day
It's not a big deal. The dielectric grease is nice, but not required.

Never drop sparkplugs in the holes. Use a magnet to gently place them on he bottom of the hole otherwise you may change the electrode distance by denting it.
Thank you very much

Hi Paul! I love your Rav4 videos. It helped me a lot.
I inherited a 1998 Rav4 about a year ago, automatic, 4 doors. I've been fixing it up little by little. Last weekend the mechanic changed the transmission disc and connected a bunch of loosen cables, obviously 4x4 wasn't working. Now I want to know How can I know if my 4x4 is working as it should? Maybe you could throw me some tips :)
Best regards,

❤
Hi Paul!!! The video is really awesome. I appreciate the zoom-ins and detailed explanation of how old and new things look like. I am not really a mechanic and wanted to ask your advice.
I got Toyota Rav4 1996 in Sep 2020 with 97k miles. Recently, the engine sign lightened up and I connected a diagnostic tool to read the code. Turned out, it was P0302. I googled the reasons and turned out that spark plugs could be one of the reasons. One other UA-camr suggested replacing the spark plug wires and seeing if the code will change, but the wires were too short to be placed in different sockets so I just put them back lol. After I turned the car on the engine sign disappeared (???). Few days later, it appeared back again and the car vibrates intensively both on idle and while driving. I haven't taken the car to mechanic since I bought it, so thinking it might be spark plugs. I have few questions:
Do I need to replace all the things mentioned in your video, or I can just replace, spark plugs and it's good to go?
Are there specific spark plugs I should get? There is a lot in the store and I have a hard time figuring out what's the difference.
Any other advise would be appreciated:) I want to try fixing it myself because I love the car, and I live in small city where there is only one mechanic place. I had previously taken the car to them because of an oil leak, but I've paid $$$ and oil leak is still there haha. Will get to that once I figure out this particular problem.
Thank you!!!
P0302 is a code for a misfire. You should replace all 4 spark plugs, the spark plug wires, and the distributor cap and rotor.
The cheap wireset and distributor cap and rotor from Autozone should be ok, but the spark plug wires fall apart easily if you pull on them. Use dielectric grease on the connections, and if you're removing the wires off the plugs, don't pull on the wires, and pry the boots up with a flat screwdriver instead.
For spark plugs, use regular denso spark plugs. You can get platinum plugs if you want, but don't get any of those weird bosch 4 - electrode plugs. The center electrode on that style of plug is tiny and causes misfires.
All the recommended part numbers are in this video.
@@LabCoatPaul Hi again Paul! I did it!!!! Changed all the parts that you advised by following the video and boom - no more check sign. I'm so excited! Never done any car jobs and it wasn't that hard for me, with your help:) Thank you so much for the video! I have few more questions, if I may.
When I was replacing rotor and distribution cap I noticed there is a lot of black goo on the engine, at the bottom of the distribution cap. I have an assumption it might be an oil leak I mentioned earlier? Not sure if that's normal.
Another question is, you mentioned in a video that if spark plugs are white or black - there might be a problem with the engine. Well, the old spark plugs were tan on a screw-thread but black on actual "spark" spot (my apologies for such a professional description). I am not sure if I can troubleshoot the engine somehow and fix it? The car drives fine, but I don't really want to wait until it's not haha.
Hope you have a great day!!!
@@kitnfall You have an old RAV4, so there's a 100% chance oil is leaking from every seal in the engine. Oil under the distributor cap is most likely coming from the valve cover gasket or distributor O-ring. If it leaks a lot, fix it. If it leaks a little bit, don't worry about it.
Also, I wouldn't worry too much about the old spark plugs having a little bit of black on them. You were probably getting a bit of a misfire. If you want to, check your new plugs after a while to see what they look like.
@@LabCoatPaul "there's a 100% chance oil is leaking from every seal in the engine." 🤣🤣🤣makes sense haha
Thank you for all advice!

hello, I have a toyota rav 4 from 1999, and I don't know where the obd plug is, I mention that it is not on the right under the dash like it is on yours, maybe you can help me, thanks.
Did any of these steps cause the head gasket leak?
How to know if the wires are bad?
Hey Paul I’m having some issues, I got two codes from my 97 po105 and po120. Is there a reason the code for the map and the tps would go off at the same time? Car is hard to start and if I tap the throotle quickly it will stall and lug. But if I roll slowly on the throttle it will rev just fine.
Thanks was not able to remove timing cover to replace gasket thanks oil leak
which spark plug model did you install? Please!!
Hi paul. just subscribed to your channel. I have a 96 with 340k miles on it. loving it more the older it gets. Just finished replacing the vcg, but i read somewhere (not sure which rav4 forum there's so many to keep track) that the torque for spark plug nuts is 17ft pounds. I'm a little worried that it may be too loose.
That sounds about right. I've never used a torque wrench on spark plugs, but you have to turn them until the sealing washers crush down a little bit. You'll feel the spark plug stop turning when it's tight enough.
@@LabCoatPaul sorry i wasn't specific. it's the 30mm nut that secures the vcg.
@@vincek296 The spark plug tube nuts don't need to be very tight.
Paul Thank you, great videos! Just one question, did you calibrate the spark plugs before putting them in the car? I have the 3 door 1999 model and it is loosing power when I accelerate the car in second and third gear. What do you think?
Yes. You should always check the spark plug gap. Start with the tune up. Get some new plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and spark plug wires.
Sir, i have a rav4 same model , the problem was the rpm gauge is not working even in idle or running fast,
First, make sure your crank position sensor works. Connect a simple OBD 2 scan tool and go to the datastream to look at the engine RPM. Does it work? If the computer has the RPM, the problem is most likely in your gauges. If the computer doesn't have RPM, you may have a bad crank position sensor.

@@LabCoatPaulmy rav4 is OBD1 sir, it is work the OBD2 scanner? ,and where the location of crank sensor,
AWESOME!!! PERFECT!!! Now, I just have one question: are you in the tri-state (New York, New Jersey & Connecticut) area? 🤞
Nope, I'm in Utah!
How can i replace my Toyota 3s-Ge 5 door idler tensioner near Alternator.any idea.
The first generation RAV4 doesn't have an idler pulley for the alternator. In the timing belt video, I remove all the belts. ua-cam.com/video/qabgg9DzY9w/v-deo.html
Where do I get the heater hose and short piece of wire?
The automotive parts store told me to buy a charger from the dollar store and use the wire out of it. I got the hose from the automotive parts store but did see it at home depot as well. . Just wanted to share just in case anyone ever has the same questions!
What is the goo?
Have the same car as this....its fuel economy is scary! Been looking to find a solution. Otherwise the engine purrs like a kitten. No other problem whatsoever. Any pointers?
Hola Paúl. Muchas gracias por tus videos... Pero tengo una duda..
Hice todo el tune up como lo explicas paso a paso pero ahora me queda la luz de "" check"" encendida...
Que puedo hacer para solucionarlo...???
Connect a scan tool to the OBD2 port under the dashboard and see what code you get. You might have left a sensor unplugged, or maybe you didn't plug a spark plug wire in completely and you have a misfire.
What size of bolt did you buy to replace the short bolt on the fuel filter bracket?
The bolt size is M6x1.00 I got one twice as long as what it had. About 25mm length (1 inch) is good.
Do you have a video about fuel injectors??
No, but I have a cylinder head gasket video where I remove and re-install the fuel injectors, and many other things. ua-cam.com/video/Ksv98JvBqXs/v-deo.html
Hey Paul- thank you for the super-helpful video. I replaced my spark plugs, wireset, rotor cap and distributor cap no problem thank to your video.
However last minute i decided to replace the PCV Valve without pulling off the cylinder head cover. I simply popped the old PCV Valve off and popped the new on on. It didnt seem to seat totally flush, but very close. During a test drive the car stalled out as i stepped on the brake coming to a corner. I managed to turn the car off and get it started again.
My question is: is it okay to replace the PCV valve as i did? Im wondering if maybe its the rubber grommet or a slight crack in the hose that might be the problem which is causing my 97 rav 4 to stall and also sometimes idle high momentarily at about 2000 rpm?
Any advice is greatly appreciated✌
It sounds like you have a leaking vacuum hose. A crack in the PCV hose will let extra air into the intake, causing the idle to be too high, or making the engine stall. You need to install a new hose on your PCV valve. It should be 3/8" inside diameter hose, and you can buy it by the foot at your local auto parts store.
Hey Paul, about the distributor. There are numberings written on each distributor's hole 1-2-3 & 4. Which number connect to which sparkplug wire? Should number 1 connect to the shortest sparkplug wire or the longest one?
The numbers are not related to the length of the wire. The numbers tell you which position to connect it to. Number 1 is closest to the crank and 4 is closest to the transmission.
*magic white goo*
I was hoping someone would pick up on that. Thanks for watching!
Paul Shpakov and also thanks you brought my rav4 back to life
any idea how to fix the engine whine? sounds almost like a supercharger, no noise when cold, only starts after driving for a while which gets louder with revving/acceleration, its even worse with the a/c on, im suspecting timing belt but was recently done, mechanic denies and thinks it needs a new a/c unit.
It's possible you have a bad A/C compressor. Diagnosing it is easy. Just take off the A/C belt and drive it. If the whine is gone, you know the compressor bearings are bad.
You can do the same thing to check to see if it's the alternator. Take the alternator belt off, and drive it. It won't charge your battery, but that's not important for a short test drive.
You can also take all the belts off, and turn each pulley by hand (with the engine OFF), to see if any of them are hard to turn or grind.
It's also possible the belts are just too tight.
how to change ac air filter for 1995 toyota rav4
The first generation RAV4 does not have a cabin air filter.
Where did you get a new distributor
I got my distributor cap at AutoZone. Most auto parts stores will have them.
So how do adjust the timing with a dist that has a set hole and no rotation slot??
Do I have to do it with a computer??
There is no slot because you don't need to adjust the timing. It should just be right. The stock computer won't let you adjust ignition timing. If you want to change the ignition timing, you can use a dremel tool to turn the hole in the distributor into a slot.
Hi Paul, I have the exactly same car and have never had problems with it for the last 20 years until now. Every couple of days the car just doesn't start. The battery is new, the starter turns but the car doesn't start. I usually wait a couple of hours or try on the next day, and then it normally starts just fine and continues fine for the next couple of days, until it happens again. Any idea what's most likely causing the problem?
Tricky indeed. Could be many different things! The only way to find out will be to diagnose step by step and eliminate each possibility! Could be a faulty HT lead, spark plug or fuel filter...
Can I use distributor from Rav4 1999 to Rav4 model 1995 ?
In the United States, 1996 - 1997 RAV4 have a distrubutor. 1998-2000 models have an updated engine with 2 coil packs instead of a distributor. It's possible to install the newer ignition system as an upgrade, but you would have to modify the engine wiring harness. I don't recommend it because it's a lot of work and you wouldn't gain any noticeable power or fuel efficiency.
Awesome video. Would you happen to know how to change rear main seal for 2003 Toyota Sienna. Maybe if your nearby you can use my van to make a video. Plus i can help with video and 2nd pair of hands. I stay in AZ. If possible. Reply and we'll go from there. Thx Art
That's a big project! Unfortunately I don't have time for that, and making a video would be a ton of work. Also, nobody would watch the video. I've noticed on my channel people love RAV4 content, but other vehicles often just get lost in UA-cam and nobody sees them.
Hey how does the timing adjust when the computer does the changes? 6:06
. Is there a motor that turns something under the distributor?
The timing is not adjustable. The computer does it. If you modified your engine and wanted to adjust the timing, you could change the base timing, and the computer would advance or retard from that point.
@@LabCoatPaul Thanks for the reply. I've only encountered Rav4s using the Coil Packs ignition system design before. The original distributor set up is interesting to see compared to the Coil packs Toyota started to use around the time of... I think about one year after your rav4's years.
Great Video. Does your RAV4 have a removable in-cabin air filter?
No. Mine is a 1997. I think they started including cabin air filters in 1999.
@@LabCoatPaul Thanks, I have a 97 also and I couldn't find one. It appears that they were included in Rav4's in other countries but not for the vehicles produced for the U.S.

I didn't add silicone onto the corners, is that ok?
Yes, it's ok not to add silicone in the corners. It just helps the gasket seal better.
@@LabCoatPaul Thank you for the response! I have a small leak coming from the passenger side that I thought I fixed! I checked the oil pan and it all looks dry! what else can it be coming from on that side? oil pump? I recently picked up the 98 rav4 and I love it! Thanks again!
@@sonvu5374 Well, the bad news is, every seal leaks. The right side of the car (engine side) has an oil pump, power steering pump, power steering reservoir, oil pan, and transmission axle seal that are probably leaking.
Does 97 rav 4 has ac filter ? I cant find mine
No, RAV4 2001 and newer have cabin air filters. The older ones do not.
Hi Paul, thank you for the great work that you are doing. I have a similar Rav4, is it possible to remove 4 wheel from this type of car?
Short answer: NO. I'm not really sure why you would want to remove the 4 wheel drive from a RAV4. It gives you lots more traction and control in rain, snow, and off road.
The first generation RAV4 gets horrible gas mileage, considering how light weight it is and how weak the engine is. Mine has never done better than 22 mpg. Removing the 4WD will probably not improve the mileage by more than 1 mpg.
If you still want front wheel drive only, you would need to replace the transmission with the front wheel drive transmission, then remove the driveshaft. To complete the project, you would also need to remove the differential, and replace the rear spindles with the non-4WD version.
After this full service and replacing certain parts that tend to get overlooked are you not finding it slightly better on fuel ? Exellent video by the way.
Any particular reason you went with the NGK spark plugs instead of the Denso plugs?
Not really. I got the fancy iridium plugs, but that's not really needed. They should both be fine.
Paul Shpakov Got ya. I’ve heard good things about the NGK plugs, but I’ve also heard from many mechanics that the OEM Denso is the best way to go.
I guess either choice is fine, as long as neither end up causing any kind of damage or performance issues, right?
@@justinrogers1988 "Performance" hahahahaha the RAV4 is one of the slowest cars you can get. There is no performance in that engine. To answer your question, it doesn't matter if you get Denso or NGK. Both spark plugs are high quality and will work perfectly.
It looks different on a 98
What is the magic goo? Do you have part numbers or a recommendation for where to buy the parts?
I bought my tune-up parts from Autozone. the part numbers are on the screen with the tools. Discount auto parts stores like Autozone are good for buying supplies like oil and filters, but for any real repairs I recommend buying original Toyota parts because they are much better quality. You can get Toyota parts at the dealer, or if you want to save a few bucks and don't mind waiting for them, you can order parts online from toyotapartsdeal.com

@@LabCoatPaul IDK if it is just me? but I can't make out all of the part numbers.
Hello everyone :)
Can anyone help with an explanation of flushing the fuel injectors?
As I know, there are 2 methods:
- with the removal of the injectors
- and the second is the running of the cleaning fluid through the fuel line.
The second option involves connecting a reservoir with a cleaning fluid under pressure directly after the fuel filter(fuel pump is turned off).
How to properly block or loop the fuel return system when using the second method?
The RAV4 does not have a fuel return line to the tank, so your cleaner will all go in the engine.
it would be cool to meet up with u and my 08 rav4 and go over engine together
Can you do one on how to restore the engine?... pistons and all
I might do some engine rebuilding in the future, but it won't be the stock 3sfe engine. I think rebuilding the engine on my RAV4 is pointless. It's not a good engine. It has very little power and the gas mileage is horrible too. I'll probably get the 3sgte turbo engine (it has 260hp), and swap that into my RAV4. I'll probably rebuild that before installing it. The engine is similar to the 3sfe, just much better.
@@LabCoatPaul ho no! Really.. I just bought one for $1400. and more than 200,000 miles on it. I'm just desperate to get to school and work and have enough time to study. People are always telling me Toyotas are reliable
@@cedarpoplar7443 There are two ways to rebuild an engine.
The right way is very expensive. You would take the engine to the machine shop and have the blocked measured, have the head surfaces refinished, get new bearings, cylinders honed, new piston rings, oil pump, water pump, and the list goes on. You'll spend at least $1,000 in parts and even more in labor.
The ghetto way is you go to the auto parts store, get some bearings, piston rings, and gaskets, and hone the cylinders yourself with a drill, and do all the work yourself. You'll still spend at least $500, a lot of time, and maybe your engine won't work right.
The best option is: don't rebuild the engine! You can probably find a used RAV4 engine, in good condition for somewhere between $500 and $1000. You might even be able to just buy another RAV4 that was crashed but has a good engine for less than $500. Swap the engine into your RAV4, and you're done.
@@LabCoatPaul this sort of thing is what social media should be about. But, I guess you gotta take the good with the bad. Thanks much for the advice.
I can't make out the part numbers in the photo. Can you please tell me how to go about finding out part numbers on my own. Thank you 😊
Edit: For some reason I can see them now. It isn't my eyes because my partner couldn't read them either. Must be my phone? Idk but they are not blurry now, just tiny. I got all of them except the fuel filter because it is on the side of the box. The 0 with a line through it was tricky. Wasn't sure if it was 8 or e. It was neither haha. The spark plugs are still blurry but i was able to guess. I am still curious to know how I'd find out the part numbers on my own if I needed to. 🤔
Depending on your internet connection, you might see the video in different resolutions. My older videos were uploaded in 2K and my newer ones are all 4K, so you should be able to see all numbers clearly if you have a good enough connection.
You don't actually need my part numbers. Just go to your local auto parts store and they'll look it up for you.

My rav its consuming tomuch fuel ?
The tune up should help it use less fuel.
I made the mistake of paying upfront to a freelance mechanic we who came to my house (he was a young adult. Seemed to be on drugs or something). I went to take a nap for less than an hour. When I woke up, he had left already leaving me a text message and the key under the driver's mat.
I have no fucking idea what he did. The car still sounds good, but I still want do a tune-up to be on the safe side.
Meanwhile I only did the plugs and wires 😂
What was the difference in economy like?
My fuel economy didn't change much after my tune up. I was getting 21 mpg, now I get 22.
Hi Paul, I’m from Colombia and i have a 1996 Toyota Rav4 5 door AWD and is 7 MPG, dont know what to do. Any recommendation?
@@victorcardona2537 Wow, 7 mpg means there is something seriously wrong with your RAV4.
With gas mileage that bad, I would assume the engine misfires and doesn't run very well.
Open the hood and start the engine. Check by the engine and under the car for fuel leaks. If it smells like gas, you have a leak.
Next, turn off the engine and check your spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor.
Also, check the compression. I did a compression test in this video: ua-cam.com/video/XSt8YF5M2jw/v-deo.html
If you're getting a lot of misfire, backfire through the intake, and hard to start, you'll need to check your timing belt. L35 in Colorado has a timing belt video: ua-cam.com/video/TbOr7gvqSqc/v-deo.html
A plugged catalytic converter can also give you bad gas mileage. EricThe CarGuyexplains how to test a catalytic converter: ua-cam.com/video/9VZ5K8n5jj0/v-deo.html
Hey Paul...I did the tune up on my 96 Rav4 hoping it would provide better accelleration. I replaced the distributor cap & rotor, plugs, wires, & pcv valve. Made a slight difference but idk...is this just how these 5sfe Toyota engines are -super sluggish in power & accelleration? I have a relative with a 2000 Corolla -same engine -suffers the same sluggish symptoms. I've heard hairline cracks in the coil can cause this symptom but idk...what do you think. Oh, & btw...it has a new timing belt, & recently passed smog with no issues(no codes or check engine light). I usually drive it like a stick(it's auto& 4x4) if I need to catch speed but even little 4 bangers should have a noticeable pep to it after doing a freah tune-up. Do you have any knowledge of this symptom with these engines/ 1st gen Rav4's?
The first gen RAV4 is a very slow car. If you're getting around 21 miles per gallon, it probably runs right. I've found I drive my RAV4 like a race car, taking it up to redline before I shift, and regular cars just pass me with no effort.
People who want their RAV4 to be fast will swap a Japanese 3SGTE engine with the ST215 transmission into it. It's a ton of time and money, but I think that's the only way to make these cars go fast.
mi coche rav4 1996 el que no tendrá reemplazo mientras sea posible mantenerlo en buena condición de servicio no necesito más
great but way too fast speed wise
I love how you speed up the important parts so I can’t tell how to do it
I'm somewhat confused...
Great video's btw, I have a rav4 (5-door) and ride also a KTM (690smc)... only wished I had a garage, tools and skills to manufacture such a nice bike-stand... but maybe my bike is too heavy anyway.
I'm confused because your car has a distributor cap. According to my VIN number check at www.toyodiy.com my RAV4 is from 12-1996, and distributorless models are from 1998 onwards...
My RAV4 is a 1997 and has the 3S-FE 2.0L engine. The 2.0 liter engine was used until 2003. According to the AutoZone database, the 2.0 liter engine was updated with coil on plug ignition in 2001. That means 1994 - 2000 all have distributor caps. Then in 2004, the engine was replaced with the 2.4 liter, which is also coil - on - plug ignition (no distributor).
Well... my old RAV4 has no distribution-cap... maybe it's a europe/usa thing.
On rav4world.com they are also puzzled. Btw, I plugged your video there, so far they seem to like it!
cool! Thanks for sharing the video!
Have you done anything more lately. Can you slow down the next video if you do make one.. you talk way to fast :-p
I agree, but I found the UA-cam speed adjuster very helpful!! (it's on the settings cog wheel under the video)
