  • In this video I go over some mods to the modern hemi. Most mods don't yield a huge gain In power on their own. If taken as a whole bolting on an additional 100 naturally adpirated hp isn't too difficult but get your pocket book ready because it's about to get hit..hard.

    B Mason you do make some very good valid points, but, I have a 2016 Shaker R/T (5.7), modified by HHP. Included is a CompCam 270, HHP/BES Racing stage 3 CNC ported aluminum heads, Manley
    heavy duty push rods, 180 temp thermostat, JBA long tube headers, JBA high flow catted mid pipes
    into a Borla cat back exhaust system. Custom dyno tuned with the result being 444 RWHP and 428 Ft. Lbs. RWT. Also changed to a LSD rear with 3.69 gears. Other mods have also been done . Yes it was expensive but the dramatic increase in performance is worth every penny to me.

    Great video! Good to put this info out there for others. I've had great luck so far at the track with just basic mods. These cars are really great right out of the factory though. Hemifever tune will pick up about 20-25rwhp. Best mod for these cars is drag radials for the rear tires and a tune. Those two things right there will help you get into the high 11's in good air.

    Cam, headers, injectors and _good_ tune make the 5.7 scream. She picks up between 60-70hp. Add porting, remove cats, resonators and get as close to straight pipes as you can, and forget it! Gaining over 100 ponies.

    Good video B Mason! hey I wanted to comment on the intake manifold I have the luxury of speaking with SRT engineers since I work at the headquarters here in Auburn Hills. a couple of weeks ago I spoke with their air flow expert about the what could be done to increase horsepower in the 6.4. he said the intake manifold is where the power is in the stock engine. when the engine was developed there was absolutely zero budget for the intake manifold. he explained the intake manifold is a 3-piece unit and they used the 5.7 SRV truck intake, just changed the TB location. He said if I bolt on a 6.4 "Big Gas" intake manifold (truck), the 6.4 is over 500hp! He said the truck intake works better simply because it was developed for 6.4 litres. guess who has a 6.4 truck intake...😁

    Good stuff, I have a 2015 R/T premium with the A8. You are pretty much right on based on my modding experience. I went with long tubes and no cats. The sound is great, but the gains were similar to aftermarket or SRT shorties and now I have to deal with CELs for no cats and rear O2 sensors. I would only recommend them if planning on cam, boost, or spray. The only nice gains on my 5.7 setup that you didn't mention was the exhaust, specifically from cats back. The stock suitcase mid muffler set up has to go on the 5.7 RT (~20hp gain). From the cats forward, there really wasn't much to gain. I also changed out my 2.62 gears for a scat pack 3.09 LSD and that made a HUGE difference. 2 tenths easy in the 1/4 if you can get it to hook up and drastically changes the cornering ability/launch. My stock 5.7 was a mid/high 13s car stock, 325hp/340tq on a dyno jet. It's putting down 370hp/400tq with a mopar CAI, exhaust, tune, and gears and now runs a 13 flat on street tires. As you said, it's a 12.5-12.9 car with a few mods, a tune, and a tire for the strip. Super fun car, I still get 23mpg on the highway with no MDS. Mine also has the premium option package with all the goodies. Also came with that factory white leather, a factory option only available in the RT trim package. Take care and keep making great videos sir!

    I wish I had guys like you around back in the mid-90's when I got into modding my Fox body. Of course with that car there are COUNTLESS different parts and upgrades to choose from. I wasted a lot of time and money, and put way too much faith in ADVERTISED hp gains, but then again I learned from those mistakes.

    I have a 2014 Durango RT with a 5.7, & although it is easily the best sounding exhaust I have ever heard on a stock SUV, I have heard that a cat back exhaust is an efficient upgrade. I also saw many negative comments on the MSD as far as reliability is concerned, but at least I don't always have to deal with the poor throttle response, as mine has a switch (ECO) on the dash that disables the MSD. Since I do a lot of long trips, I would like to see an increase in fuel economy. I'm currently getting 22 - 23 MPG.

  • @positivevibration6093

    Very informative B Mason. When I dropped a valve into my combustion chamber, I didn't give up as so many 5.7 hemi owners seem to have done. I rebuilt the engine myself with the following mods. Original cylinder heads were custom reground by an old school head builder with next size larger intake and exhaust valves. (Something you really didn't mention.) K & N drop in air filter. Gibson shorty headers. Stock mid pipes and mufflers. (Gibson is the only CARB certified header for the LX.) And lastly: DiabloSport 91 octane tune including MDS delete and transmission shift stiffener. While often working 7 days a week to have money for family AND toys, my Magnum took three years to complete. Consequently, I forgot how the wagon drove comparing then to now. I do believe it's faster, but definitely louder exhaust and firmer shifts. With those four mods, I'm guessing 40 HP gain. Appreciate any feedback.

    • @bmasontv
      @bmasontv  7 років тому

      Positive Vibration I would guess roughly 30hp to the wheels if you kept the stock cam. we are basically on the same page in terms of gains. you probably picked up some torque down low as well I'm glad to hear you didn't give up on her! those magnums are getting harder and harder to come by.

    Preach brother! The best, most realistic advice I’ve seen on UA-cam. Listen to this guy, he knows what he’s talking about. All great points. The 5.7 does get much better results from mods than the 6.4, but most numbers from manufactures are way over rated. Thanks for spitting some truth!

    Totally agree with you. Been working on my 2006 Charger 5.7 since brand new and figured out what works and whats bs. First mod- 22"x10 wheels, looked cool, weighed down and changed steering feel negatively... Changed to 2013 Challenger wheels. Eibach adjustable coilovers/camber-adj/sways...great add. Many coldair intakes, back to factory. 2013 performance heads with pistons (after dropping a couple valve seats)...great add too. Predator tuner (mostly for parameter controls, trans, revlim, shift points/firm,etc) wish i could flip a switch to go from Pred-aggress tune to factory sets quickly tho. Went thru a few exhaust setups (straight pipes - toooo fn loud) found that cats on, H pipe, suitcase out, flowmasters on gives a great low note at idle but once woken up it screams within reasonable levels. Here cops notice rips from loud exhausts and they chase you/ticket you, im no longer young, dumb and certainly not rich so driving habits inevitably changed for the better. Sorry for the long novel, looking forward to more of your uploads. ✓

    Alot of the modifications you have noted don't bring may gains stand alone however if you tuned the motor, you will see crazy gains. A cam plus a tune can easily see 50 hp. So if you spend the money and do a larger throttle body plus the cam and exhaust( full exhaust, not the cat back) you can see extreme gains

  • @jackofblades3171
    @jackofblades3171 7 років тому +31

    Your mistaken its not about how much 1 part changes how the motor runs. Its about how all the parts work together. +2 hp is lame, +10 hp is not really noticable, but when it is all added up new heads, cam, intake, carb and air cleaner on a new ls or hemi engine it will make a difference. Stock cam with aftermarket heads makes no sense and new cam with stock heads doesnt make sense either. Its how things cooperate

    • @bmasontv
      @bmasontv  7 років тому +8

      The point of this was to illustrate the lack of aftermarket support for the gen 3 Hemi. I agree, it IS THE COMBINATION which is greater than the sum of its parts. Unfortunately, there are not that many matched combinations for this platform. The heads flow incredible numbers as stock castings, so a traditional camshaft swap will often create a lazy engine lower in the RPM range with a marginal increase up top. Intake manifolds are limited to ported factory pieces and are therefore hampered by factory inlet tracts/designs. the 5.7 is in a better position than the 392 in terms of gains (% gain over stock) , but then the cost becomes a factor.

    • @turbofreek

    I have to disagree on the cold air intake. I have a 2005 ram with the hemi. I have tried the drop in filter and it seemed to run worse. I bought a k and n cold air intake from Amazon for a little over 200 dollars that promised a little over 10 horsepower and 10 foot pounds of torque to the rear wheels. I would tell anyone it is completely worth it! The best 200 I ever spent on my truck! I can't speak for any other brand than k and n but it definitely is something you truly feel in the seat of your pants!

    • @devn3813

      Bruce Borneman on the truck and an old vehicle it probably does make a difference. The intake exhaust and cats on the 392s are as good and straight through as they can possibly be. You are going to see extremely small gains if any from an intake exhaust or cat delete on a 392

    This literally the video I've been looking for, and thank you so much B Mason for doing this!
    A little bit of your terminology went over my head but knowing WHAT to research is the first step, I think.
    Yesterday, a friend helped me get the Mopar front strut brace and the Hellcat air intake installed, along with the K&N filter. So far it's been minimal as far as performance but handling has really been noticeable for cornering!
    Onto my next question - from what I understand, our Scat Packs are rated for 91 octane and it's possible to do a 93 octane tune, since that's what most gas stations around me take, to increase a bit of power? Is this what you meant by a very minor change?
    And to expand on my original comment, could you do a video on visual mods that scream MOPAR but not ricer? For example: hood wraps, caliper paints (since scat packs have the boring black), hood pins, headlight and taillight tints, other decals like the bee badge (I envy those Charger SP owners!) and other Mopar related products. I'd love to hear your opinions on the matter! I mean, not only do we want our cars to perform the best, we want them to stand out in the crowd as well.

    Great vid with helpful info and it's nice that someone includes the 6.1 for a very welcome change as I'm often left out because everything is about the 5.7 and 6.4, and that really sucks. I realize that it's because the 6.4 replaced it in SRT,s, so I get it but there's no reason that those of us with the 6.1 can't get any updated info and a little respect. I was thinking about doing a throttle body on my Challenger, but after watching this vid am having second thoughts. If I had the intake ported and Polished and then added the throttle body, do you think that they would work together better than just doing the port job?.

    i have a 09 R/T 6M track pack (3.92 diff with 18" rims instead of 20's)), mods include ,392 cam, wide band 02. (tune by johan)bbk shorties, custom cat back ,fastman 82mm TB, 180 deg stat , complete rear suspension urethane bushing kit (wheel hop is gone) custom franken intake induction piping, i used 4" pvc drainage pipe (thin wall) 90" silicone elbow 4"-3" entering the TB then turning down into the fender area with a large K&N conical filter. all joint connections were smoothed out eliminating anything that would cause turbulence. i also smoothed out the inside of the k&n coupler to create a bell mouth . it was squared off go figure . relocated the IAT,over towards the fender tubing .the goal here was to smooth out the entire leignth of the induction system as well as stabilizing IAT temps. the next step was trying to keep it as cool,as possible . you guys all know that the rad fan blows directly onto the intake pipe ,TB and the IAT, heating it all up, i made a air deflector that directs the fan air bellow the TB and pipe preventing the hot air from directly hitting it. the result was IAT temps at ambient when moving and about 10 deg above when stopped with a rapid adjusting when moving. smoothing out the induction system to the TB is the way to go ,keeping IAT temps in check is critical .
    my ride also has a wide band 02, in my opinion you cant dial in or tune it without that ! my A/F is on average at 12.7-1 at wot in all 3 ranges when i data log ,yes lean is power in a nat asp. the last thing on list is to clean up the casting flaws in the intake manifold ports.
    im sorry guys i have no track times or dyno results (coming soon) . i also hooked up my manometer to the intake plumbing to check for pressure drop .its below 5" wc. meaning almost 0 restrictions (no vacuum at WOT) in the induction tubing .
    on average my car runs about 4 sec 0-60 lowest was 3.9 . on a 60 deg day .its also hard to stop wheel spin. all these mods were very cheap BTW. thanks for reading . great Chanel !

    Top mod for a 5.7 at least in a pickup truck version. Longtubes! Your 392's come with a MUCH better manifold. The cast iron lumpy turds hanging on the side of the 5.7 neuter all power.

    Bought a 10 R/T 5.7 Challenger less than a year ago and have recently started looking into power mods and parts in general. Listening to this guy talk I am agreeing with the insane cost of this stuff. Lifters and intakes are nuts. Exploring a super charger, exhaust and tune it. Boosting the power too much then it needs a better clutch and obviously more rubber for traction. Looking like $10K easily.

    On my 392 I had my poly intake ported and cleaned up ... matched to heads ... and gained 18 whp and 20 ft lbs which I was very impressed with bang for the buck wise. Got more from that than headers and head porting!
    274 cam did well but most gains up high. The mid size cam would be a better choice (270) next time. Cai and throttle body swaps gained 8-9whp really nothing to speak of.
    If I had to do a 392 over again I'd do headers, 270 like custom cam and ported intake. Done.

    I have to disagree with the cam statement. Its not about the overall peak gains, but the the area under the torque curve or everyday useable torque. If you cant notice that the amount of power from just about any given rpm to the engines peak torque rpm has increased and stays more consistent throughout said rpm range (versus having a tq curve that looks like Mount Everest with a long ramp to peak tq and a quick drop off with no real length of being flat or near flat to the peak hp mark) then i wouldnt be giving mod recommendations. And this goes for upgrading the cam or cams on ANY engine.
    Remember folks hp = tq x rpm/ 5252 so wherever we can make more torque (not just just at peak) we can also make more measureable horsepower. Now if we are talking about butt dynos, i would agree you wont feel near as much peak hp increase but the tq curve (and thus horsepower) throughout the rpm range will be greater than it was on stock cam or cams and in someplaces it will be SIGNIFICANTLY greater and hold near that plateau longer to peak hp.

    I enjoyed your video. All those things we did as kids on poly's and wedge's gave a good bit but hemis come out of the factory with them done now. I am keen on some exhaust mods on my 6.1 mostly for sound but also in prep for some forced induction. It seems shoving some extra air in there is the best bang for buck.I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the best tuning options for pos displacement superchargers and maybe the best kits you've found? I like the procharger system for these cars. A set of longtubes, and full exhaust will help it breathe on the top end. As for tuning, I use HP tuners myself and for tuners, Alex Peitz is the best in the business for getting forced induction combinations down the road safely.

    • @bmasontv
      @bmasontv  7 років тому +1

      Brian DeCroce I haven't had any issues personally. My truck is MDS and with nearly 80,000 miles on the clock have had no problems with it at all and it gets run pretty hard. Some guys are saying that they are running into problems with the MDS lifters but mileage doesn't really seem to be a factor in nor does the way that the car is run, meaning if it's beating on or what have you. The luck of the draw pretty much dictates when they start to go bad but General consensus has, at least somewhat led to, around 85 to 90 thousand miles. Even then it's not a guarantee that the MDS lifters will fail. If going with a different camshaft it's advised to swap them out. some shops are more sensitive than others mainly because they see the cars that fail they don't see the cars that don't fail, if that makes any sense.

    I have a question that's totally off of the topic but does track mode in a 2018 Scat Pack Challenger turn off MDS. Is MDS anything to worry about as far as prolong engine life? Do some 392 engines never have problems with MDS and others do? Usually I drive my car in track mode and am hoping that when I'm in track mode that MDS will not turn on. What are your thoughts on MDS in the 392 2019 Scat Pack. Do the lifters eventually go bad and most engines or do some never have problems? I appreciate your answers to my questions by the way because nobody really answers them except you and you know your stuff as far as muscle cars go because I can tell who is full of crap and who is on top of things.

    • @bmasontv
      @bmasontv  5 років тому

      My understanding is that MDS is turned off in track mode and for sure in manual mode. As to the lifter issue, I know of some cars that never have the problem, I only know of a few 392 that ever had an actual lifter failure. That's not to say that there's a mileage amount that will determine when a lifter will fail. One of the cars I'm thinking of had a failure at about 30,000 miles. My truck had a failure at 91,000 miles. I know of some trucks and cars that go well over a hundred and fifty thousand miles with no issues.

    I just did some googling on the MDS system. The 392s do not have it. Then again, I used google to come up with that, so correct me if I am wrong.
    And then I did some googling on the gas mileage difference between the 5.7 and the 6.4. It's a 2 MPG difference. It means you are going to get 38 less miles on a tank with the 392. Who is really going to notice that?
    And I'll tell ya, the MDS is a noticeable performance hag in my current R/T. When I gun it, throttle response is absolutely horrible. It pauses, scratches it's computer and ponders, while it figures out how many cylinders it wants to use to comply with the command. If I can be RID of that system, and the cost of being rid of it is a measly 2MPG...count one more reason I am a happy boy for having bought a 392 today!

      CobraVette 1 I actually agree with your comment. Considering you will only pick up 200 horsepower, and still be less than a Hellcat. If you have an automatic then you're car's Transmission durability is also less than a Hellcat. Oh yeah, and then there is the cost... for the cash needed for a tune, blower, install ( if not doing the work yourself), a Hellcat could have been purchased. Which would have a better shortblock and better transmission durability.

    Although not applicable to a Gen 3 Hemi, I have tell you this. I saw a vid on UA-cam awhile ago and they tested stamped steel rockers vs roller rockers. It was on a 350 SBC and there was NO effing difference. Can you believe it? Stinkin' ball and stud rockers vs rollers lol.
    Anyhow, the gains will be worth it when you up the spring pressure and camshaft no doubt but as you were talking mods to the Hemi and how practically none of them work in of themselves, I couldn't help thinking of that.
    BTW, did you see the header dent test? Banging them bad made no difference in power or torque. It wasn't until the *uckin* things were flat that the power even started to fall off. The vid was hilarious. The 1st dent made the power go up.
    To me it shows on the street mandrel bent headers are a complete waste of time. Perhaps Bernoilli's principal at work. I'm not sure, but I'll never pay to get mandrel headers built again after watching that and I'll never care about equal length long tube headers either. Scavenging occurs, but in such a narrow bands that it seems pointless in a street driven vehicle now. They work well in the high end but I doubt it's the scavenging more the reduction in pumping losses that help with long tubes.
