I think somebody has been dropping a few magic mushrooms in the designers coffee recently.
1 and 2 series now off the menu. Bizarre.
I think the 1 series looks pretty good, but the 2 series looks like the designer forgot the design sheet in his/her pants and put it into the washing machine before turning it in.
all of the 2 series? remember that in this list is also the M2 and M2 C
And the upcoming 4-series, with its pig-snout.
My wife took delivery of M235i last week. I was surprised and impressed at its drivability and feel, during the test drive. Wife has become quickly attached to it. In this Autogefuhl I paid particular attention to Thomas' observations during his test drive, as I've found the xDrive in this car to be different - now all I need to do is wait for wetter weather to compare notes! Another fine review.
Thanks and enjoy!
Funny how many of these comments criticize the design withouthout even having seen the car in reality. It looks much sportier and slim. As a matter a fact, I find the back more beautiful than the front (had a test last week)and the side profile has nothing to do with Kia, believe me 😉. I think this model will appear on the roads a lot in the coming years.
I test-drove it as well and can only agree with you :)
I've seen it in person multiple times now. First impression: looks like a Kia. Second-to-Twentieth Impression: looks like a Ford Focus.
If u like the way a Kia looks then it's OK. But it performs like a BMW..
You're always welcome to Portugal! And if you see Matt Watson around, please teach him how to drive here!
Obrigado 😎
Please also teach Matt how to review cars properly like you do.
@@garywillis8737 I second that notion. To me his reviews feel wonky and come off as bias, and some things are just wrong, which would be okay if he wasn't a familiar reviewer everyone blindly listened to and copied.
Proportions are very odd.
Looks like a KIA
reloaderv3 worse. Some KIA’s look pretty nice nowadays.
@@53orion91 you are right.
Great review! But who designed this?! It's...unique.
That's a very long and good review. the car without the logo, can't tell it's a BMW.
Great review, nice car
Both high quality!
Thanks ever so much Thomas for such a comprehensive review - You really are the best !
👌
Very good! Thanks Thomas. Small car market is gettin' quite warm.

Once again in Portugal :) nice too see. Good video.
good job guys as usually. Best review out there. I love the design even if sometimes it looks too much. but it helps the car to stand out by the way
thanks pal !
Excellent detailed Review as always - much enjoyed the driving lounge. Many thanks. At 49:58, yes, I scrolled back to earlier shots!
way to go =)
For a moment I thought it was some new car from KIA.
That's doing the design team a KIA a disservice.
Exactly lol that grill
If you removed the BMW badges, put Hyundai badges and told me this was the new Elantra I would have believed you.
Hehe. Thats true.
To me this car reminds me of the new audi a5, from the front
False, Hyundai would never have such premium interior.
You have no idea about the cars
the side profile reminds me of a Ford Focus
Excellent my friend!!!
I honestly think this is a great looking car. Thought it looked terrible until I saw it in person and wondered what it was until I saw a 218i badge, looked great.
Just bought this car for my 19 year old daughter. This is the best and fairest review I have seen. Someone who really knows how to show you the good without trashing the bad. The M235i X drive is a fun fast and safe starter car. Great way to enter the BMW family.
Thanks 🙏 please recommend us!
And lucky daughter u have 😄
Absolutely love it. The old school door lock buttons on the top rear of the door are unnecessary and need to go. Great review as always.
The level of detail and information is on another level thank you I’m sold on the m235i. Thanks also for mentioning the car play it’s been driving me crazy on my 430 gc and I was thinking it’s was just me! Great content as always really appreciated.
👌
im sold on it, bought white, i do have to get use to the back but i love how it drives, if i was an oldschool fan of m3 m2 i would not like it but its my second bmw and usa is where i live so i respect the build quality of this car. badazz to drive.
i drove cla its to low to the ground and so tiny in front of cabin. it looks wierd too, the way too coupe look of the sloping rear. I wanted the BMW since it blends in like a 4 door sedan just to keep it low key. easier to speed with the 301 hp and not be seen/noticed. also i got 12k off paid 39,500.
i like the design, in real life it looks even better than on camera
Really like how BMW has integrated the infotainment and instrumentation screens on t his model. The front design really works for me and I love the frameless windows. I wish that the faux suede or alcantara seating surfaces were available in the USA.
In the USA, BMW's configuration tool reflects a price point for the 235i X Drive around $45k for a spec with expected feature sets in this market segment (heated seats, full safety gear and distance following cruise control, etc.). The price range of the gran coupe places it directly in competition with a lot of AWD sedans and, if practical, a handful of lower priced Japanese FWD sedans. At the upper range of the 235i X Drive Gran Coupe's pricing, a buyer is directly in the territory of a gently used / CPO Porsche Macan as well as more potent, mid-sized luxury sedans. It looks like a good leasing option for a consumer who must have the latest BMW product and it could be an interesting option on the CPO market in a few years.
The exterior looks uninspired but all the options are available. RWD BMWs are very good. Thanks to your both.
It's very impressive that the FWD platform has even better handling than the 3 series.
Fantastic detailed review! I wish we would get the animal friendly interior in the US, there is a growing interest in that option here but maybe BMW’s consumer research shows something different. Either way great video!
Thnaks! Well Sensatec at least base trim
Think this is a cool sedan. BMW could refine this at mid-life and this could be near perfect after. Thanks Thomas for the awesome review, appreciated the look at the other colors too.
Would look better in Thomas blue 🤘🏻
I stop everything and watch the new Thomas video as soon as I get the notification! Would love to see one in Thomas Blue!
Me too. 🤗
Way to go !
I'm sure whenever they do a facelift, they'll make the back look better, and will improve the side shot view. Nonetheless I still think it's a really beautiful car, think this may be my first BMW
Another great review! Just looking back at this as am looking at a 2 Grand Coupe. I completely understand your comments about the size of the car compared to a 3 for larger people although I found out it is actually only 1mm shorter than my 10 year old 3 Touring externally! It just shows how cars have got bigger externally although I suspect internally it may be smaller than my current 3. If only parking spaces had grown aswell over the last 10 years…🤦🏻♂️😂
Thanks Phil!
The look definitely grows on you after a while
Yes, just like a fungus! Lol.
@@Philmoscowitz do you spend a lot of time looking at fungi?
OMG thomas pls show the metallic blue one, looks awesome!
In the linked episode 👍
This m235 xdrive is about 5k more than a 330i xdrive and the 228i xdrive is 7k less than a 330i xdrive. I never noticed that odd proportions at the rear of the car, as the one I saw at the autoshow didn't have a spoiler and everything wasn't so contrasted with black and white details. The car I saw was Thomas blue with gun metal details. Boy those M performance 19 inch wheels looked great don't they? Great review!
Hmm I'm not a fan of the back 🤔
Or the front!
@@sweetfreedomGB They're not a fan of the front?
Very sad, It could have been so great if they would have simply scale down the new 8 series grand coupe
Agreed - the front and side look pretty good, but the back end...I don't know, but it feels either too high or maybe too flat.
Welcome to Portugal :)
lovely BMW!
I Would prefer the round exhaust tips option on this model, looks much better imho
Looks nice from the front, but the rear reminds me of Opel Ampera :D
Please kill it! And Fire the Designer
Congratulation on your great work!
Is there any chance to present the new Subaru Forester in the coming weeks? If yes, then when? Can you also stress out a bit the consumption only on highways?
Cheers!
Yes will do!
That was amazing. You did exactly what I asked within 2 hrs of my request! Ok next command, go to the Geneva auto show!
I haven’t even watched this video yet. Just waking up. LOL
😎😎 enjoy in full Hd, full-screen and in full length
New BMW design codename: Fugly
Have the 228 in storm bay metallic. The mirrors and spoiler are body color I think it looks better
The 2 Series Grand Coupe's boot is very similar to the SEAT Toledo 2002&VW Bora 2000.
it looks like a really small X4/X6 at the back
BMW 2 M sport 2020 or BMW 4 M sport 2018.
Same metallic colour - moreless comparable accessories.
Both for the same money.
Which one would u pick?
BMW’s switch to front wheel drive platforms, whilst scorned by fanatics, will prove an inspired idea. Some drivers want the brand profile with practicality but aren’t too concerned by true driving dynamics. Besides, for the purists, there’s always the M-division inspired cars. Thank you Thomas!
This is a great size as all cars have been getting bigger and heavier. The 2 series is really the classic 3 series size it once was and loved. The new 3 series is the size of a older 5 series. The mesh grille does look odd?
For some reason I don't dig the rear end...🤔 Otherwise really nice looking small sedan. Thanks for the nice review.😎
Appreciated 🤗
If I'd have opportunity to ask a kind of car reviews, then
I'd like to ask a little bit more sport car review. For example Ferrari, Lamborghini....and so on.
3.5/35 series end of an era, front wheel drive biased, 4 cylinders. I wanted the previous generation badly, but couldn't make it happen (plus only automatic was homologated :\ ), and now I'm too late.
You can BTW connect Android phone via ScreenMirroring and Android Auto will come in July, fully wireless integration. So Android users hold on for a bit.
I remember the 3 GT's rear...
For diesel. " Although you have no spark, I would still plug you as a presenter. "😁
I was hoping this would be a 5 door car like the 4 series gran coupe. no 5th door is a dealbreaker for me
I actually like. Can't afford it but I like it
It looks uglier then the CLA
Oh dear. 🙄
The CLA is gorgeous
Even uglier than Camry, I would seriously buy the cheaper Old BMW than this if I had much Money to maintain it
Well, that's not very hard. The CLA is quite beautiful
Like A Sambu D yes, a few people think so. It’s not🤣
Looking forward to full electric....
Looks better in the flesh but the rear is just too cramp for my liking. 3pcs side windows on a short car doesn't make it look bigger also.
I know you’ve done reviews on the Golf R and the BMW M235i… was one clearly better than the other? Any notable build quality and driving differences?
Build quality bmw wins for sure
All that this car is really missing is that i6 3.0 liter engine and ZF 8 speed automatic gear and RWD based xDrive
I wold like to ask a question for the interior. Is this Illuminated Berlin? Thanks :)
Thomas could sell me a fridge even I’m an Eskimo. But only if it’s animal free for sure!
for sure!
Looks like a shrunken sedan version of the X6
The front is gorgeous but jesus ... that back ... what is this ?!?!?
When will you do a 2020 GLE 63 Amg+ Review?
I am also waiting for that.
Thank You Thomas for this nice review, I must say that this car doesn't look good from behind it looks like they chopped off the rear of 3/5 Series GT or some SUV, it won't age that well that is for sure, interior has a nice build quality you can see that, but it is rather bland doesn't have that BMW sportiness and wow factor, we can see it that it drives great and sounds great and I think it will have a hard time against A sedan/CLA and especially against A3 sedan who was the first on the market and still looks great, it aged very well, and we know the new one is arriving very soon!
thanks for tuning in !
Compact premiums!
New joint venture Mercedes - Hyundai? Latest BWM design is so bad...
Went to the BMW website ...
I tried the car configurator and managed to reach 70k€ with some good options.
Do we realize what 70'000 euros represented just 5 years ago??!!??
Never in my life I will pay more than 50k for an insipid 4 pot engine. And for an insipid car that does everything like the other brands.
World is going crazy!!! 😴
That price does not sound bad at all, though, but okay. Have you actually driven it or rented it? I would not make such a bold statement like that until I actually went in one.
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII I paid, in 2017, my M140i 53k€...
So, I'd have to pay 15k€ more to smile 15k hours less driving this M235i? No, thanks.
Very thorough review Thomas, as always. As for the car, it looks better than a new 1 series to my eyes, but I’m still not convinced. Questionable proportions, fussy detailing, ugly rear that’s too high (dictated by the hatch underpinnings no doubt, particularly the belt line). Having driven a couple of new 1 series, the switch to front-drive hasn’t given that much more room inside. Sure it helps, but an extra 33mm rear legroom here, or 25 in the hatch, is hardly night and day to the old car. The switch to fwd is really about BMW saving money in manufacturing to increase profit margins. As a fan of BMW, I want them to be successful and I understand they have to keep evolving design-wise. It just seems a shame they feel they have to give up their identity in the process. Older BMW’s were always elegant. This has been lost I feel. More positively, Thomas Blue really suits it!
Thanks for the feedback!
Finally it arrived. When I was looking for the new car, I went for G20. After 1 week they announced this one and I was like: "Dang, this car looks awsome, I would go for it!". But it was too late. Afteralll it's a front wheel drive so I probably went for G20 anyway, but it would be a really hard dilema tho...
Interesting. Do you have the G20 already or is it coming? If you have it already, I hope you are enjoying it.
Lightning Farron Well then, I placed the order and the car was already one week in production when they announced new 2 series. Yeah, I already have it since November and oh man, I enjoy it so much. I really would recommend this car to real drivers or just to people who like fun driving, with sometimes augmented heartbeat xD
@@MrAndrei4777 Nice. Thanks for the reply.
The rear just looks wrong to me.
The back bothered me at first....but it started to grow on me a couple months later. And, the ALL BLACK on BLACK looks better. Everyone keeps comparing it to a KIA...truthfully, I’m not familiar with Kia cars so it wasn’t my reference point. I think BMW is testing the waters for this new backing. We may see it more and more...
I saw it in person and trust me..it looks way better than the images that we see, also it seems to turn quite a lot of heads. Everyone seems to be complaining about the front but once you see it in person it fits together rather nicely!
23:27 LOL! This system is too good! The car seems like it'll be nicer to me than a real person. Careful, Thomas. Don't let your spouse know that they may be replaced by a BMW. 😂
😉
😂🙊
So next generation 3,5s will go FF AWD🤔
CLA is way better in my opinion. especially the new CLA 2020
I agree with you, though I do like the BMW's design as well. I love both.
The biggest design mistake is the grill, now it looks like a Kia.
BMW should fire head of design and head of product right now!!
Hello sir is this bmw 235i manual version?
It doesn't look like BMW and looks more like Toyota Corolla sedan.
Actually if you squint on this one it's a rejected Kia Forte/Cerato design.
I love my 235i…
You people complain about the looks, this is the first BMW wish i like.
Its a real beauty in Blue metalik and its sound is just great which invite you to puch the speed pedal .
I don't care about the Haters. I'm getting this baby.
I actually like the design of the front and side. The back however is too ungainly - what was BMW thinking? The new 840i Gran Coupe has a beautiful rear end, so why does this not follow that? Even Mercedes Benz copied the new CLS back design with the CLA and it is a striking car.
Thomas, why didn't you came to Ribeira d'Ilhas? Always Guincho...
Was too far when filming so mich like we do
Maybe next time! There are lots of interesting places to shoot here!
@@autogefuehl Maybe next time! There are lots of interesting places to shoot here!
How can the same company that designed the gorgeous 4 series Coupe and Gran Coupe come up with this disaster of a design...
It's a good looking car. But with the BMW grille and specific design quirks the proportions do look very wrong.
i am kinda in love. always been a 3 series guy. but this.. oh my.
the fact that so many dislike it make it even more desirable to me!
this 2-series looks great, imo
I agree. I share your opinion.
There is Only one thing good about this car is that its bmw
Shrinking the 8 series doesnt work too well the proportions are off and that Audi A3 X4 tailight treatment with 5GT rear is sort of a squeezed mess
All 4 doors are dangerous, windows down, the corners could be very dangerous obstacles.
Echoing others’ comments, I think this is a very difficult vehicle to get excited about 😐
BMW has really lost me these past few generations through questionable (at best) design decisions. The rear of this car is atrocious and the rest looks bloated and poorly proportioned. As others have mentioned, it's as if they're converging on the design standards of Japanese auto-makers.
Well, that's you, man...
Agreed. I’m going to be picking up a minty E36 328is this weekend. A proper BMW. Longitudinal six cylinder with RWD.
@@bradcomis1066 my first car was an E36 325is. enjoy!
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII Apparently not just him if you read through most comments here ...
@@bradcomis1066 you got that right. BMWs are supposed to be rwd at a minimum, and if it has an inline 6, so much the better.
